Emile Hirsch plays a violent cop who finds his way into the mafia in a film whose devotion to Martin Scorsese’s classic runs through every frame
This 70s-set based-on-a-truish-story crime drama about an undercover cop embedded with mobsters was originally released in the US as The Gemini Lounge; for some reason it’s been retitled Inside Man for the UK, but on no account should it be confused with either the excellent Spike Lee-directed heist movie from 2006 or the recent Netflix show starring David Tennant. And while it merely borrows the title of better made movies, there’s something almost superfan-stalkerish about this film’s relationship to Martin Scorsese’s GoodFellas. It’s not a remake in any way and revolves around totally different characters and a different plot, but it somehow does a cheap karaoke version of GoodFellas’ rhythms, phrasing, look and general vibe.

Snape in Harry Potter is neither a hero nor a villain, but a layered character who keeps audiences on their toes with his cryptic behavior. Characters like Tom Stall in A History of Violence and The Driver in Drive may be heroes, but their capacity for violence makes them just as scary as the villains they fight. Even though they are not villains, characters like Quint in Jaws and Dalton Russell in Inside Man exhibit an obsession and intensity that make them truly intimidating.
It is typical that a particularly scary movie character is the villain of the story but that is not always the case. Now and then, a movie character comes along who instills fear into audiences without actually being an antagonist. They might be red herrings, where they're made to seem like an antagonist only to surprise audiences later on, or they could even be the hero...

I’ve loved gangster movies since I was four years old and saw Humphrey Bogart and Sylvia Sidney in Dead End (1937) on TV, and Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway in Bonnie and Clyde (1967) at the movies (My dad pinched a lobby card for me). Every Friday night, a local NYC station ran old crime flicks on a slot called “Tough Guys.” Bogart, James Cagney, Edward G. Robinson, and George Raft were the faces over the title. Today that might be Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Wesley Snipes, and James Gandolfini.
The gangster and crime genre produced some of the most influential films in cinema history. Mervyn LeRoy’s Little Caesar (1931), William A. Wellman’s The Public Enemy (1931), and Howard Hawks’ Scarface (1932), get a lot of credit for breaking ground in topics beyond criminality, shattering sexual taboos as well as the boundaries of acceptable visual violence. High Sierra (1941) and White Heat...

Exclusive: Emile Hirsch (Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood) will exec produce and star in My Time’s Up, an upcoming indie drama from writer-director Michael MacRae (Fishbowl California).
The film is centered around fictional comedian Micky Hoffman, who faces backlash after a stand-up set—then returning to his hometown in the Midwest to mentor rising, ‘woke’ comics.
MacRae, Michael Nassau and Pritesh Shah will produce under their 290 West Productions banner, with Max Adler (The Trial of the Chicago 7) exec producing and taking on a role before the camera. Buffalo 8’s Nikki Stier Justice, Grady Justice, Luke Taylor and Matthew Helderman will also serve as executive producers on the project, which marks MacRae’s follow up to the 2018 dramedy Fishbowl California, starring Kate Flannery and Katrina Bowden. Thomas Sullivan is handling casting.
Hirsch is perhaps best known for his SAG Award-nominated turn as Chris McCandless in Sean Penn’s 2007 film Into the Wild.
