With the news Friday that Beastie Boy Adam Yauch lost his battle with cancer, distraught fans turned up "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party)" and remembered the rapper's incredible musical accomplishments. But those of us with an eye on movies remember McA's contributions to the film industry as well.
With countless Beastie songs featured on movie soundtracks, including J.J. Abram's "Star Trek" and Marvel's "Iron Man 2," there's no doubt the group as a whole had success in film. But Yauch took it a step further when he dove into directing documentaries and shorts, including "Fight for Your Right Revisited," his 2011 Sundance Film Festival debut that acted as a sequel to the hip-hop trio's 1987 music video.
Most notably, however, Yauch launched the indie production and distribution company Oscilloscope Laboratories.

Ever since Beastie Boys member Adam "McA" Yauch was diagnosed with cancer of the parotid gland, a salivary gland in the throat in 2009, the rapper kept an upbeat attitude in public about his chances of beating the disease.
Unfortunately, Yauch, 47, wasn't able to win his three-year battle and died on Friday after several years spent out of the spotlight as he struggled to regain his health. Spokespeople for Yauch have not revealed what the cause of death was, but according to Dr. Spiro Manolidis, a head and neck cancer specialist in the Department of Otolaryngology at Beth Israel Medical Center in Manhattan, it is not unusual for this type of cancer to turn deadly.

It was with great sadness today that we read of the tragic passing of Adam Yauch at the age of just 47. As a member of the Beastie Boys, Yauch was an icon of American music, and for the last decade his involvement with Oscilloscope Laboratories, the film company he co-founded, made him a beloved figure within U.S. independent cinema.
Until earlier this year, Yauch was an Ifp board member, and on the Ifp website Executive Director Joana Vicente offers the following tribute:
On behalf of the Ifp staff and board of directors, we are deeply saddened by the passing of former board member Adam Yauch. Adam was an incredibly talented and passionate individual who brought a special uniqueness to the Ifp. Adam supported the work of different filmmakers with different perspectives, many of whose voices would not otherwise be heard. He wholly embraced Ifp’s mission and was an...

In the last few years of his too-short life, you were as likely to find Adam Yauch, a.k.a. McA of the Beastie Boys, on the red carpet of a film festival as in the studio or onstage. As happens with many artists who find success at an early age, Yauch found new outlets for his talents, and they amounted to much more than mere hobbies. Sure, we’re blasting Beastie tunes nonstop in the hours after we learned of his death at age 47 today, but we’re also looking back at his non-musical accomplishments too.
Nathaniel Hornblower, The Director
As his alter ego Hornblower, a Swiss goat herder, Yauch directed a number of Beastie Boys videos, and quite memorably stormed the stage in costume at the 1994 MTV Video Music Awards to protest Spike Jones’ not getting the Moonman for “Sabotage.” He was also rather outspoken in other outlets,...

Here's a real bummer of a headline that I didn't expect to be reading today. Adam Yauch, perhaps better known as McA of the Beastie Boys and the Swiss filmmaker Nathaniel Hornblower, has lost his battle with cancer and passed away. He had been diagnosed with cancer in a salivary gland and a lymph node back in 2009; his treatment delayed the release of the Beastie Boys album Hot Sauce Committee Part 2 and kept them from touring in support of it. Everything we had heard in the preceding months, however, seemed to be positive with his band members remaining hopeful that he would recover. However, when the Beastie Boys were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last month, Yauch did not attend. I guess we should have known something was up. He was 47 years old The news definitely came as a shock to me, and having just watched the documentary Marley,...

After nearly three years of struggling with cancer, filmmaker and Beastie Boys rapper McA, otherwise known as Adam Yauch, has died at the age of 48.
According to Rolling Stone, Yauch, one of the three members of the long-lived punk-turned-hip-hop band, was diagnosed with cancer in 2009 after a tumor was discovered on his salivary gland.
In addition to co-founding the Beastie Boys in 1979 with Mike Diamond and Adam Horowitz, Yauch had a long-standing involvement in the movie scene. He has more than 30 soundtrack credits on films like "Baby Mama," "17 Again," "Horrible Bosses" and "Iron Man 2," and also wrote, directed, produced and appeared in films and documentaries.
His first Hollywood effort was directing a 1989 short film called "Shadrach," which promoted the band's song of the same name. He went on to direct and produce the "Beastie Boys: Video Anthology," a 2008 high school sports documentary called "Gunnin' for That #1 Spot," and last...

There are bands that make great music and others that make great videos. But there is a rare breed of act that makes both. Since their very earliest days, the Beastie Boys were in that latter category.
From the frat-boy fun of 1986's "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party)" video to what will likely be their final clip, a 2011 all-star clip to promote the Hot Sauce Committee Part Two single "Make Some Noise" and the "Fight for Your Right Revisited" film, the B-Boys not only had fun, they made sure we did too.

Yauch's death has rattled the music world to its core, with tributes already pouring in from the likes of Justin Timberlake and Russell Simmons to fellow hip-hop pioneers Run-dmc.
Since his 2009 cancer diagnosis, Yauch has stayed away from the public eye, often communicating with concerned fans through email, but during a period of remission, the Grammy-winning rapper stepped forward with his bandmates to release what would be his final album with the Beastie Boys, Hot Sauce Committee Part Two, and even won an MTV Video Music Award for his direction...

The Hollywood community took to Twitter this afternoon to share their thoughts, with Ben Stiller tweeting, "So sad that Adam Yauch is gone. A truly great musician & filmmaker. He stood for integrity as an artist. What a loss. He was a very good man.

Since Lord of the Rings, the actor has avoided big-budget epics. But now he's reprising his hobbit role and starring in a lavish Treasure Island adaptation
Is that the Ring? Around the ring finger of Elijah Wood's right hand is a band of silver with strange lettering on it – probably Elvish. As a reward for his lead hobbiting services in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, director Peter Jackson reportedly gave Wood the original Ring. And he still wears it. Doesn't he?
"No. This is Hebrew, " he says, twirling the ring around his finger. "I know, it has a kind of a similar look to it."
Oh.

Even though they were still openers on Run-dmc's tour, the Beastie Boys had big plans, as you can see in this classic MTV News clip.

In the summer of '86, the Beastie Boys toured the U.S. (aboard Elvis' old tour bus) as opening acts on Run-dmc's now-legendary Raising Hell Tour. At the time, they had just a handful of singles to their credit ("Hold It, Now Hit It," "She's On It," etc.) and were still months away from the release of their breakout album, License to Ill, but you wouldn't have known it from the way they handled themselves during interviews. They had — to use a phrase that carried absolutely no cultural significance during the meaty years of the Reagan administration — a fair amount of swag.

The internet was served a teaser yesterday when the new Beastie Boys video for their song "Make Some Noise" hit. The reason why it was so tantalizing is because the video is actually a segment of Fight For Your Right Revisited, a short film that may be the most star-studded half-hour of all time. Now, through legal channels, the full movie has arrived. Hosted on Hulu (big apology goes out to our international readers), the short was written and directed by Adam Yauch (better known as McA) and features Danny McBride, Elijah Wood and Seth Rogen as the 80s version of the B-Boys as they run into their feature selves, played by Jack Black, Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly. The film first played at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, but with the release of the new B-boys album Hot Sauce Committee Part 2 coming up on May...

The new Beastie Boys video, “Fight For Your Right Revisited,” features smashed glass, erupting beer cans and more celebrity cameos than a season of “Entourage” and “Sesame Street” combined.
Last night in New York, a big-screen showing of the full 30-minute version of the video (or is it a short film?) was a much quieter affair by comparison. At the IFC Center in Greenwich Village–where Beastie Boys was misspelled on...

Here is the Beastie Boys full-lenght short film/music video called Fight For Your Right Revisited. The film was written and directed by Adam Yauch. The movie stars Seth Rogen, Danny McBride, Elijah Wood, Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly, and Jack Black. This awesome cast will tell the story of what happens after the epic party in their classic 1987 music video for (You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party).
Here’s the official description of the film:
Fight For Your Right Revisited (Director and Screenwriter: Adam Yauch) – After the boys leave the party… Cast: Elijah Wood, Danny McBride, Seth Rogen, Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly, Jack Black.
Check out the trailer here and watch the full film below:
I think the film is pretty funny, but at times drags on a bit. I do love the Beastie Boys and the actors involved so it's cool to see them in this film.

Edit down Adam "McA" Yauch's 30-minute "Fight For Your Right Revisited to just over five minutes, and the result is a music video for the Beastie Boys' new "Make Some Noise." The track -- culled from "Hot Sauce Committeee Part 2" -- debuted earlier this month, and was prominently featured in the Sundance-picked short film. Now it's time to get down to marbles, and those marbles are famous friends. About a dozen prominent actors from Will Arnett, Steve Buscemi, Jason Schwartzman, Ted Danson, Jack Black, Will Farrell and Orlando Bloom show up in the clip, with Elijah Wood, Jonah HIll and...

We were pretty curious and more than slightly excited when it was announced that Elijah Wood, Seth Rogen and Danny McBride would play the Beastie Boys in a short film called Fight For Your Right Revisited. The film picks up as the Beasties sneak out of the party they crashed in the 1986 '(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party)' video, and then carries on along a ridiculous path of destruction and minor mayhem that, somehow, ends with two incarnations of the Beasties in a dance-off that turns into a very literal pissing match. (So, yeah, perhaps consider this one Nsfw.) The short premiered at SXSW and aired last night on MTV and Comedy Central, and now the whole thing is online. Check it out after the break. The movie represents a stab by the modern Beastie Boys at coming to terms with the mid-'80s Beasties (the...

By now, you've probably watched — and subsequently re-watched — the Beastie Boys' new "Fight For Your Right Revisited" film, which premiered at midnight Thursday morning (April 21) on MTV2, mtvU, VH1 Classic and Palladia.
In theory, it's a tongue-in-cheek retrospective on the Beasties' early License To Ill days, picking up where their sublimely stoopid "(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party)" video left off, following Mike D, Ad-Rock and McA — as played by Seth Rogen, Elijah Wood and Danny McBride, respectively — on a drunken spree that culminates in an epic dance battle against their future selves (John C. Beastie Boys have just debuted a music video for their latest single "Make Some Noise". It features A-list cameos like Seth Rogen and Elijah Wood. The former channels his inner rap star, rocking a black fedora and shades, and finishing off his look with some huge bling-blings. The latter, meanwhile, goes more casual with red T-shirt and matching cap.
The music video is clipped from Beastie Boys' mini movie "Fight for Your Right Revisited" which is released to celebrate their 25 year-anniversary of their career. The full film will have more celebs ranging from Susan Sarandon, Orlando Bloom, Kirsten Dunst and Amy Poehler.
"Make Some Noise" is the first single from "Hot Sauce Committee Part.2" which is slated for United States release on May 3. Featuring Nas and Santigold, the CD reportedly was supposed to be released in 2010 under the title "Hot Sauce Committee Part.1", but it got delayed due to...

It's practically unfathomable to think that the Beastie Boys' License to Ill (a.k.a. "the first album I ever bought on cassette tape") turns 25 this year.
After all, it seems like the kind of thing that should never age, mostly because it gave us the quintessential "sublimely stoopid" video of the 1980s: "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party)." The clip was a classic ode to festivity that, whether it intended to or not (probably not) also managed to sum up so much of the decade so well — the vapidity, the inebriation, the wearing of hood ornaments on gold chains. It doesn't deserve to get old; rather, it should be...

You get the feeling that, back in their hell-raising License To Ill heyday, the Beastie Boys derived some sort of perverse pleasure from blindsiding unsuspecting interviewers with profanities or non sequiturs. Or at least by dumping beer on them.
Sufficed to say, they've mellowed some in recent years (their vocabulary has improved, too), but back in the day, the Beasties lived to torment the media, and they did so by any means necessary.
Take, for example, this rather revelatory bit of tape shot on December 31, 1986, at MTV's 6th annual "Rock 'N Roll New Year's Eve Ball" (a party so huge that both Brian Setzer and the Georgia Satellites were in attendance). In it, a poor MTV...

The Beastie Boys have gone from being rap rebels to having the biggest rolodex in Hollywood.
The legendary hip hop group, who shot to fame with their 1986 record "License to Ill," put together a 30-minute short film, "Fight For Your Right Revisited," based on that album's smash hit single, "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party!)." And its cast list puts any big screen blockbuster to shame.
Danny McBride, Elijah Wood and Seth Rogen star as the Beasties, with Will Ferrell, Jack Black and John C. Reilly mirroring them as their older selves. Stanley Tucci and Susan Sarandon play annoyed adults who just had their house smashed in by a party. And then the rest of Hollywood puts in cameos, too.

On Thursday, much to the delight of Stanley Tucci enthusiasts and students of meta-comedy the world over, the Beastie Boys premiered a teaser clip for "Fight For Your Right Revisited," their short film that chronicles the events that transpired following their epochal 1987 video of the same name (or, as the B-Boys put it, "the long-ass video thing.")
Featuring appearances by pretty much everybody — Will Ferrell, Danny McBride, Jack Black, Jason Schwartzman, Ted Danson, Susan Sarandon, the aforementioned Tucci and Seth Rogen, to name just a few — it's most certainly a celebrified thing, but it also manages to rise above the usual cameo crap-heap by being really clever, too, filled with wink-wink nods to the Beastie's past, Ferrell's legendary "More Cowbell!" "SNL" sketch, and even the late, lamented "Arrested Development" ("Come On!")
In short, it's everything you could possibly want from a celeb-heavy clip, but is that enough to...

Judging by the trailer to the Beastie Boys' "long ass video thing" -- otherwise known as "Fight For Your Right Revisited" -- McA's short film that recently premiered at Sundance Film Festival, the group clearly has one of the deepest contact lists in the game.
The quasi-sequel to "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (to Party!)" sees John C. Reilly, Will Ferrell and Jack Black as Beasties from the future who travel back in time to square off against current-day Beasties Elijah Wood, Seth Rogen and Danny McBride.
Look for additional appearances by Stanley Tucci, Susan Sarandon, Ted Danson and Will Arnett, among others, as the younger version of the guys, adept at drinking Budweisers, hooking up with girls and destroying all that is good and holy, scrap it up with their older, bloated selves. Yeah, we can't really wait for this.

Back in 1986, The Beastie Boys released Licensed to Ill to rave reviews. Rolling Stone magazine printed the now-famous headline, “Three Idiots Create a Masterpiece.” Licensed to Ill became the best selling rap album of the 1980s and the first rap album to go #1 on the Billboard album chart, where it stayed for five weeks. We here in the movie news section typically don't post too much about short films, but an exception can be made in this case. Fight for Your Right Revisited is a short film by writer/director Adam Yauch, but the fact that it's a short about the rap trio known as the Beastie Boys is only half of the reason why it's cool. The other half is because it stars the likes of Danny McBride, Seth Rogen, Elijah Wood, Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly, Jack Black, Stanley Tucci, Susan Sarandon, Will Arnett, Steve Buscemi, Rainn Wilson, Jason Schwartzman, Ted Danson, and about a thousand other names you know and love. After several delays caused by member Adam Yauch's cancer battle, the Beastie Boys are ready to unleash their long-awaited Hot Sauce Committee Part Two album.
Yauch made the announcement Sunday on the band's official website, writing, "Since the dawn of time, and perhaps even before, there was a silent order who were tasked with a mission. They held their secret tightly. On May 3rd the Hot Sauce Committee Part Two will be unleashed on the general public. Hold fast ye heathens."
Mike D followed up on Monday with a post that revealed the album's cover art, a series of colorful geometric shapes that looks like a pixilated collage.
As previously reported, the track listing for the group's seventh studio album is: "Tadlock's Glasses," "B-Boys In The Cut,...
