Some subgenres of horror are so well-worn that it’s hard to find genuinely original new films in that style. We Bury the Dead offers an unconventional approach to the zombie genre, emphasizing emotion over straightforward scares, resulting in a film that is much more affecting and dread-inducing than the typical flick about the undead.
We Bury the Dead Review
The film is set in Tasmania after the accidental detonation of a weapon that kills everyone on the island, as a woman volunteers to retrieve the bodies of the dead, hoping to find her missing husband, soon discovering that many of the dead are exhibiting signs of life. Although Zak Hilditch’s script hits many familiar beats and tropes, it explores them with an uncommon emotion and vulnerability that elevates it beyond this familiarity.

Ayo Edebiri revealed on her Instagram story that she got “insane death threats” because of Elon Musk. The X owner shared a fake report in February 2024 claiming Disney was considering Edebiri as a replacement for Johnny Depp in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise. Musk reacted to the report by writing: “Disney sucks.”
“Just remembering when I got some of the most insane death threats and racial slurs of my life for a fake reboot of a movie I had never even heard of because of this man,” Edebiri wrote on her Instagram story while sharing Musk’s original post. “Lmao. Fans have a number of confirmed details to latch onto in 2025 for the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean 6 movie.
Pirates of the Caribbean is still a major talking point in Hollywood, even with nearly a full decade since the franchise's last entry, Dead Men Tell No Tales, debuted in 2017. Fans have been anxious to see more of Johnny Depp's adventures on the high seas, with some going as far as making fake promo material for new movies.
While the franchise has achieved plenty of success, Pirates of the Caribbean 5 was the lowest-grossing Pirates movie to date at the box office and the lowest-rated on Rotten Tomatoes (30% Tomatometer rating). However, that has not stopped fans from speculating on when the franchise may continue.

Sharon Osbourne has revealed that one of her biggest mistakes in managing her husband Ozzy Osbourne was not allowing the metal icon to audition for a role in the Pirates of Caribbean movie franchise.
The revelation came during Sharon’s appearance on Billy Corgan’s new podcast The Magnificent Others. “Do you want to know the biggest mistake I ever made with Ozzy?,” she asked the Smashing Pumpkins frontman, who responded, “You’re gonna admit to a mistake?”
Sharon continued, “He got offered to go and read for Pirates of the Caribbean, and I’ve never said this to anyone.” Corgan replied, “And you said no?,” to which Sharon answered, “I said no.”
“Wouldn’t he have been perfect?,” mused Sharon. “Johnny [Depp] wanted Keith [Richards] to be a pirate, remember?”

Johnny Depp has been away from Hollywood for a long time. After all the drama with his ex-wife Amber Heard, he was dropped from Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean franchise as well as from Fantastic Beasts, leading to reports suggesting that he had sworn off Hollywood.

However, fans of the actor would be delighted to know that the actor is coming back to Tinsletown, and collaborating with his Pirates of the Caribbean love interest Penélope Cruz for an action thriller criminal mystery film. While this does not mean that the actor would consider returning to his fan-favorite role of Captain Jack Sparrow, Disney should better sort their priorities and try to get him on board.

The closest we've come to a solid update on Marvel Studios' X-Men reboot is a report from the trades revealing The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes scribe Michael Lesslie is penning the screenplay.
Who knows how much has changed since then but, as far as we're aware, no director is attached and Lesslie may not even be the current writer on the project.
Despite that, the casting rumours continue coming in thick and fast. Yesterday, we shared a breakdown of the actors who are supposedly in the running for X-Men. And today, we have possible Mister Sinister casting!
According to insider @MyTimeToShineH, Marvel Studios is eyeing Dune, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, and Skyfall star Javier Bardem to play the iconic X-Men villain in the MCU. You may recall that he was once said to be in line to play The Fantastic Four: First Steps' Galactus.

Orlando Bloom has jumped in the driver’s seat for a new gig — as the face of Porsche Design.
As the brand’s new ambassador, the 48-year-old actor models both timepieces and eyewear in a campaign released this week, and he calls the opportunity “a great honor.”
“From our first conversation, I was excited about the idea of a partnership,” Bloom said in a statement. “I immediately sensed that the Porsche Design team and I share a mutual passion for great design and a similar mindset. The brand has a unique way of translating the unmistakable design and timeless elegance of icons like the Porsche 911 into lifestyle products. Pirates of the Caribbean is a franchise that lost its way, starting strong with Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, single-handedly reviving the swashbuckling genre, before falling prey to too many supernatural elements and too much of Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow. The talk of a sixth installment has long been bandied about, with rumors of an all-female cast and even a return for Depp, if he wants it. The wise choice for Disney would be to drop the idea altogether and leave the franchise in the grave it dug for itself in No Man's Land with Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. But it's hard to walk away from an enterprise that's garnered over $4.5 billion to date, so it's a foregone conclusion that Disney will dig up the corpse for another kick at the zombie monkey. And when, not if, they move ahead with a sixth installment,...

There's only one way for the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise to move forward if Johnny Depp isn't returning for the sixth movie. The first Pirates of the Caribbean film was surprising when it was announced, as it was based off a theme park ride. However, 2003's Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl was a massive success upon its release. Part of the reason The Curse of the Black Pearl was so successful was because it featured the debut of Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow, a reckless but extremely charismatic pirate.
Depp has returned for every Pirates of the Caribbean movie since, and has made Jack Sparrow one of the most iconic movie characters of all time. However, the franchise's future has been uncertain since 2017's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. The upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean 6 has been confirmed to be in development,...

Gladiator 2 is officially winding down its theatrical run after being in theaters for nearly two months but that didn’t stop the film from scoring another $2.6 million this weekend to reach yet another impressive box office list. Ridley Scott’s legacy sequel now sits at $168 million domestically and $280 million from international markets for a worldwide cumulative haul of $449 million. This $168 million domestically is enough to earn Gladiator 2 a spot on the list of the top 25 highest-grossing historical fiction movies ever, recently passing Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves but still falling short of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales at #20. Gladiator 2 is only $4 million behind the aforementioned Pirates of the Caribbean film, so a run to the top 20 is impossible to rule out.

Skeleton Crew brought a fun pirate-themed aesthetic to the galaxy far, far away. Pintel and Ragetti were much-loved characters in Pirates of the Caribbean but dropped out of the story. The Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise launched in 2003 with Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and rapidly gained a loyal fan base. Pintel and Ragetti, played by Lee Arenberg and Mackenzie Crook respectively, appeared in the first three Pirates of the Caribbean movies to excellent effect. The comedic duo was widely loved and respected as a highlight of the series. Unfortunately, they did not return for the fourth and fifth outings.
After The Curse of the Black Pearl, Arenberg and Crook starred as Pintel and Ragetti in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. Some of Pirates of the Caribbean's best sword fights, banter, and character development occurred in these movies, giving Pintel and Ragetti many opportunities to shine.

The final scenes of Joachim Rønning’s “Young Woman and the Sea” are hard to spoil — the film is, after all, based on a true story — and yet, they still surprise. As the film’s own producer, Jerry Bruckheimer, sees it, that’s because the very same history that inspired the Daisy Ridley-starring feature has largely been forgotten. Until, of course: movie adaptation time.
The biographical sports drama follows swimming trailblazer Gertrude “Trudy” Ederle (Ridley), who became the first woman to swim across the English Channel in 1926. Upon the completion of her incredible athletic feat — just one of many we see Trudy tackle in the feature — she was greeted as a hero in her native New York City, care of a ticker-tape parade believed to have been attended by two million people.

Keira Knightley’s spy thriller Black Doves is already a hit on Netflix, providing the leading, action-packed, comical, and heartfelt role that’s been missing since her last starring Pirates of the Caribbean movie. After making notable appearances in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999), Bend it Like Beckham (2002), and Love Actually (2003), Knightley skyrocketed to fame at 18 years old upon starring in the main female role in the swashbuckler hit Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003). As Elizabeth Swann, Knightley proved she was highly skilled at playing quick-witted, action-adept romantic lead characters.

Pirates of the Caribbean 6 updates have kept the continuation of the Disney franchise alive despite a considerable hiatus since the last entry. How the Pirates of the Caribbean story will continue, and whether Johnny Depp will return remains a mystery though. When Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl was released, its enormous success was unexpected. Before 2003, pirate movies were seen as guaranteed box office flops, but the franchise has remained popular ever since, constantly proving its international mass appeal and earning Depp an Oscar nomination for his role as Jack Sparrow.
2017's Dead Men Tell No Tales, the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean movie, earned close to $800 million worldwide, and Disney announced plans for another pirate adventure in 2018. Disney is looking to revamp the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, but the question is whether to do so with or without Johnny Depp. Now, Variety reports that producer Jerry Bruckheimer is developing two Pirates of the Caribbean scripts. One of the scripts is without Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow, which is likely the much-discussed Margot Robbie-starring reboot that has been in contention since 2020. Another would be to bring back Jack Sparrow if Depp and Disney can make amends. “Nothing has been ruled out,” one knowledgeable source told the outlet.
It is hard to deny that Depp's depiction of Jack Sparrow helped make the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise the box-office sensation that it became. Before Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, pirate movies were box office poison, and the idea of a movie based on a theme park ride seemed like the death knell for originality in Hollywood.

Johnny Depp can easily be one of the most sought-after and bankable actors in the industry with movies that have grossed billions at the box office. Out of all the projects, he’s most well known for playing Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Despite this success, the past couple of years have been quite difficult for him both personally and professionally.

Keira Knightley has been in the film industry for a long time, but her role in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise opposite Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom propelled her to success and worldwide acclaim. Keira Knightley accepts that the Pirates Of The Caribbean films opened doors for her – but also reflects that she paid a personal price.
Currently undertaking promotional duties for the Netflix series Black Doves, Keira Knightley has been chatting about her time in the Pirates Of The Caribbean films with some conflicting thoughts.
Knightley took on the role of Elizabeth Swann in the films, which as she notes in a new interview with The Times, pretty much turned her into a household name. However, with that came the paradox that the franchise brought with it a heavy weight of criticism.
“It’s a funny thing when you have something that was making and breaking you at the same time”, she considered. “I was seen as shit because of them, and yet because they did so well I was given the opportunity to do the films that I ended up getting Oscar nominations for.

For a director who's as in love with the ocean as filming on location, Disney's Young Woman and the Sea quickly became a passion project for Joachim Rnning (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales). Not only was it the chance to work alongside star Daisy Ridley and producer Jerry Bruckheimer, but Rnning was dedicated to author Glenn Stout's source material and the legendary true story of Trudy Ederle, the first woman to swim the English Channel.

This is probably going to make a lot of you feel very old, but by the time Tron: Ares is released next year, 15 years will have passed since Tron: Legacy took us back to the Grid (which itself was a follow-up to the original 1982 classic).
Can this third chapter, from Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales director Joachim Rønning, live up to fan expectations? There's some uncertainty, particularly with Morbius and Suicide Squad star Jared Leto taking on the title role of Ares. However, the fact the Oscar winner is playing a program who leaves the Grid and enters the real world is undeniably intriguing.
Talking to Empire (via SFFGazette.com), Rønning addressed how the move from Daft Punk to Nine Inch Nails on the soundtrack is indicative of the sci-fi franchise's continued evolution.

With Tron: Ares hitting theaters in October 2025, director Joachim Rnning is hinting a bit difference and unexpected for the franchise. Known for his work on action-packed epics like Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Rnning is taking Tron in a more emotional direction this time, blending the digital thrills of the Grid with a story that goes deeper than ever before. Rnning was speaking with Deadline as part of a feature on international filmmakers who are "disrupting" the industry, with the Danish director speaking at length on his career, and his future endeavours. Tron: Ares wrapped filming back in May after shooting in Vancouver, and Rnning admitted that he was thrilled to dive into the sci-fi genre for the first time in his career to date.

Welcome to International Disruptors, a feature where we shine a spotlight on key figures and companies from outside of the U.S. who are shaking up the marketplace. This week, we’re talking to Norwegian director Joachim Rønning, who has worked across projects such as Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and Kon-Tiki. Rønning tells us why he felt compelled to bring the inspirational story of Trudy Ederle, the first woman to successfully swim the English Channel, to life in Young Woman and the Sea and also what audiences can expect with his next project Tron: Ares.
Joachim Rønning has long been fascinated by the sea. Growing up in the small Norwegian seaside town of Sandefjord, his childhood was filled with memories of sailing and being on the open water. “I’m relaxed on the water,” the director tells Deadline. “There’s something so rewarding about being...

The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise came so close to having a real-life married couple among its cast at the same time. Over five movies, this Disney franchise has included a wide range of actors, some of which became regulars while others appeared in only a single film. Had one particular character returned for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, the actor who portrayed her could have been on screen with her husband. Unfortunately, this didn't come to be.
The first three Pirates of the Caribbean movies featured the same basic cast, with Johnny Depp starring as Jack Sparrow and Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom playing Elizabeth Swann and William Turner, respectively. However, the fourth movie, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, took a fresh new direction, with Depp being the only primary cast member to return. He was joined by Penlope Cruz, who played the mischievous Angelica.

Chris Hemsworth and Jason Momoa become pirates and join Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow in fan-made Pirates of the Caribbean 6 art. After getting its start back in 2003 with Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, the hit Disney franchise would release four sequels of varying quality, the most of recent of which came in 2017. Since then, Depp's future as Sparrow has been in question, but Pirates of the Caribbean 6 has been confirmed to be in development, though few updates have emerged on the project in recent months.

Fear Is the Rider: Ben Mendelsohn, Toby Wallace, & more join Abbey Lee in Australian Outback slasher
Nearly three years have passed since it was first announced that Abbey Lee (Old) and Christopher Abbott (Possessor) had signed on to star in the Australian Outback thriller Fear Is the Rider, which is coming to us from John Michael McDonagh, the BAFTA-nominated writer/director of the 2011 film The Guard… and while the project has lost Abbott in that time, it’s still alive, and Abbey Lee is still attached to star in it. Deadline reports that Lee has now been joined in the cast by Ben Mendelsohn (Star Wars: Rogue One), Toby Wallace (The Bikeriders), and Eliza Scanlen (Babyteeth). Film Constellation and CAA Media Finance will be seeking distribution deals at this week’s American Film Market.

Johnny Depp returning for Pirates of the Caribbean 6 wouldn't be a solve-allthe Disney franchise's box-office trends prove that it must return to the basics. Another Pirates of the Caribbean sequel has been confirmed, but just about everything is still in the air with this project. The big question on everyone's mind has been whether Depp would return to the project or not, with a common sentiment being that the film can't succeed without the star. However, another factor of the earlier Pirates of the Caribbean movies must be brought back into play if a sixth film is to redeem the franchise.
Of course, Depp's return to play Jack Sparrow is a key first step. It's becoming increasingly clear that fan outcry would be intense if the actor weren't restored to his iconic role, especially considering Disney's public dismissal of Depp leading up to his defamation trial with ex-wife Amber Heard.

Penlope Cruz joined up with the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise for the fourth installment, but she was notably absent from the following film. The actor had played Angelica in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, the daughter of Black Beard and an old flame of Captain Jack Sparrow's. She was an intriguing, likable, and somewhat tragic character who fit right in with the morally ambiguous pirates of the overall franchise. It really seemed as if Cruz's Pirates of the Caribbean character was being set up as a franchise regular. However, she only appeared in this one movie.
The last Angelica was seen in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, she was mourning the death of Black Beard, whom Jack had tricked her into killing. Cruz's character clearly wasn't happy about this, but her life was, ultimately, more worthy of saving than her villainous father'sespecially since...

Fear is the Rider, described as an ode to “gore-drenched Ozploitation slashers of the 1970s,” sees a woman pursued in the Australian Outback by a pack of ruthless serial killers. While that already has our attention, Deadline reports the nod to gory slashers has lined up an impressive cast so far.
Ben Mendelsohn (Star Wars: Rogue One), Abbey Lee, Toby Wallace (The Bikeriders) and Eliza Scanlen (Caddo Lake) have been cast in lead roles.
As for plot, the film follows “a lone woman, searching for her missing mother, who is pursued into the Australian Outback by a terrifying family of serial killers, with only an ex-con and a young girl willing to help her.”

Johnny Depp faced a lot of struggle after his ex-wife Amber Heard slammed him with emotional and physical abuse accusations in 2016. The Pirates of the Caribbean star had to face the nightmare of losing a role in a movie he was tied to at the time, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
Heard’s accusations also severely damaged his reputation in the industry, which was honestly expected considering the severity of the claims that were made. Not only did he lose his role in the Harry Potter spinoff film series, but was also dropped by Pirates of the Caribbean as well.

Pirates of the Caribbean 6 has been confirmed to be in development since 2018, and Disney's upcoming action/adventure movie faces an uphill battle to overcome the franchise's issues. Ever since the release of 2017's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, there has not been much confidence about the future of the franchise. Dead Men Tell No Tales holds a 30% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and was not praised by many critics either. In fact, the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has been on a downward spiral ever since the original movie came out in 2003, something Potc 6 needs to change.
Since the release of Dead Men Tell No Tales, there have been different plans proposed for the sixth Pirates of the Caribbean film. At one point, a reboot starring Margot Robbie seemed to be gaining momentum, but that was eventually canceled. In March 2024, producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed that...

Filling Johnny Depp's shoes in Pirates of the Caribbean 6 will be no easy task, but after a concerning four-movie trend, this won't even be the greatest obstacle for Disney's next installment. Depp's Jack Sparrow is an iconic feature of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, but it's currently unclear whether this character will make a return. While the best-case scenario would see, at the very least, a cameo, there's plenty of indication that Johnny Depp alone won't be enough to guarantee Pirates of the Caribbean 6's success.
The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has been at a standstill for the better part of a decade, with the fifth installment, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, being released in 2017. Since then, Disney has faced significant controversy. Depp was dismissed from his role due to the ongoing legal conflict with his ex-wife, Amber Heard, and even once things had settled down,...

Pirates of the Caribbean continuing without Captain Jack Sparrow may seem like an impossible task, but the franchise has already proven how this change is possible. Johnny Depp first played Jack in the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie, The Curse of the Black Pearl. Jack became an immensely popular character following Curse of the Black Pearl's critical and commercial success and was responsible for many of the movie's most humorous, entertaining, and memorable moments.
Depp reprised the role in the four Pirates of the Caribbean sequels that followed, all of which placed Jack at the center of their respective stories. Since the last sequel, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, was released in 2017, there has been uncertainty about whether Pirates of the Caribbean 6 will ever happen, and if the franchise will be able to continue if Depp does not return. Starring Kaya Scodelario, Spinning Out was canceled after only one season on Netflix. That left the teen ice-skating drama with a cliffhanger and multiple unresolved storylines. While certain factors led to its cancelation, the show was in its infancy and could have used another season to properly hit its stride.
Spinning Out followed Kat Baker (Scodelario), who is presented with a unique opportunity to be a pair skater, alongside bad boy Justin Davis (Evan Broderick), after a fall that nearly ended her figure-skating career. Throughout the series, she balances working as a waitress, taking care of her mental health, and daily skating to make her Olympics dreams come true. The finale ended at a crucial point in the series, and with its cancelation, there is no way of knowing what would have happened next.

Ahoy mateys! Might we ever get to sail the seven seas again? Flying the flag of defiance against the might of the Royal Navy? Disney hopes that one day we all will, as the studio hopes to bring back the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. A reboot of the franchise will most certainly be a welcome one, as the pirate-riddled, sea-faring adventure still holds significant appeal. When Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, the most recent installment in the franchise, premiered seven years ago. The film was able to gross an impressive $800 million at the box office, which has fans wondering perhaps what a return to sea might hold with a reboot. Possibly, a return for certain characters from the original franchise could be on the cards.

Well, producer Jerry Bruckheimer is keen to see Depp return to his iconic role. However, the actor’s potential return to the acclaimed franchise is like a ship lost at sea—adrift and uncertain.

Meanwhile, Naomie Harris, who once morphed into a million crabs as Tia Dalma, has recently expressed fervent enthusiasm for a return, despite her character’s rather crustacean finale. In true pirate fashion, she recognized that the franchise has a knack for resurrecting the seemingly unsinkable, so she’s not ruling out a comeback in the next installment, Pirates of the Caribbean 6.
Bruckheimer himself is drafting multiple scripts for the sixth flick, tempting fans with the promise of yet another adventurous voyage.
