Raven Song

Go into this film with a clean slate

Raven Song was an unexpected treat. Most films do not surprise me anymore, but this imaginative and witty film had much to offer all the senses. Mohamed al Salman has stated that he makes films for the Saudi audience so keep in mind that if you are not Saudi, you are going to miss some references and humor. The arguments over poetry, language, and their political implications is one area that foreign audiences might find confusing. The musical references are another, including the choice of background music as well as the father's destruction of his son's cassette. Remember that for conservative Muslims, music is haram/forbidden. Asem Alawad as Nasser is perfect. The casting all around is spot on. The Egyptian doctor is hilarious. The way Nasser relates to his parents will be very alien to Westerners as will be the goat references. Nonetheless, keep an open mind and expose yourself to a new culture and a unique, growing film industry.
