This century, Catalonia has emerged as a region with a rich filmmaking tradition, supported by public investment in local artists and production companies. This commitment to nurturing talent and fostering growth has led to significant developments in the region’s industry, culminating in a contemporary state of affairs that sees Catalonia involved in every part of the 2025 Berlin Film Festival, where Spain is the honorary EFM Country in Focus.
Four Catalan productions have been selected for the festival’s official program, highlighting the region’s creative prowess. Eva Libertad’s debut feature, “Deaf,” based on the director’s Goya-nominated short of the same name, will premiere in the Panorama section, while Lucía G. Romero’s “Close to September” will screen in the Berlinale Shorts section. Two Catalan films play in Generation Kplus: Robin Petré’s “Only On Earth” and Karen Joaquín and Uliane Tatit’s “Juanita.”

Writer/director Zach Cregger’s horror film Barbarian (watch it Here) was a financial success when it was released last year, and it also received a lot of positive word-of-mouth. New Line Cinema was so impressed by it, they forked over $38 million to pick up Cregger’s mysterious new horror project, Weapons. (Beating out Jordan Peele and Universal in the bidding war.) New Line then signed a first look deal with BoulderLight Pictures, the production company behind Barbarian. They have since set up two other projects, a sci-fi thriller called Companion and a haunted house movie called Occupant, that Cregger will be producing. But while the filmmakers move on to other ideas, Barbarian does still has life in it. Our friends at Bloody Disgusting report that a Barbarian video game is now in the works!

Chapel Hart took the stage for the last time on Tuesday night as they sang for America’s votes during the “America’s Got Talent” finale performance show. The Mississippi country trio admitted “song choice is probably everything” when host Terry Crews asked them how they planned on standing out from the crowd. Well, they raised the roof with their original song “American Pride” during the live show and had the audience up on their feet. Watch the “AGT” video above.
After previously earning the Golden Buzzer from the entire panel, Chapel Hart has been heralded by country superstars like Dolly Partner and Tanya Tucker. They clearly have a huge future ahead of themselves, but did they do enough to join the “AGT” winners list? The judges were mixed in their critiques, with both Simon Cowell and Howie Mandel mentioning their off-key vocals.

This Attack on Titan review contains spoilers.
Attack on Titan Season 4 Episode 8
“Meat…”
“Assassin’s Bullet” painfully explores the cost of war as losses for both Marley and Eldia accumulate. “Assassin’s Bullet” makes sure to properly honor the member of the Survey Corps that perishes, but the previous episode saw the Warriors in Marley lose even more people that were important to Gabi, Reiner, and the rest of Marley, yet Attack on Titan doesn’t even allow time for Marley to grieve. Perspective has been an integral component of this final season and it’s fascinating how the Attack on Titan’s treatment of these characters inherently informs who the audience is pushed to empathize towards.
The people of Marley aren’t allowed a chance to mourn their losses, but their pain crystalizes in a way that’s even more dangerous once Gabi’s vitriol boils over. In the end it...

Whereas the name Christian Slater once meant a sign of a great movie (I’m thinking of the likes of Heathers, Mobsters, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and his magnum opus, Pump Up the Volume), today it tends to mean low-budget, badly scripted straight to DVD fodder. The last Slater film I watched, Sofia, was a bit of a mess. The film could have been an action-packed espionage thriller, but instead the film saw both actor and director seemingly out of their depth – with Slater literally trying to “act” like a tough guy without backing it up with any actual physicality. So I approached Stranded with a bit of trepidation, even moreso given that director Roger Christian was responsible for the atrocity that was Battlefield Earth…

British films start to emerge in the run-up to Cannes, and Sundance makes an uncertain return to London
Out of the Cannes
Following the exclusion of British films from the main competitions at Cannes, a couple of silver linings did appear, with The Arbor director Clio Barnard's follow-up, The Selfish Giant, being picked for Directors' Fortnight and Paul Wright's debut, For Those in Peril, produced by the ever-edgy Warp Films, settling into Critics' Week. In an interview with Cannes boss Thierry Frémaux, it even emerged that he quite fancied Barnard's film for the main competition but couldn't (or wouldn't) nab it back from the Quinzaine selectors. So that's good. Other strong British titles bubbling under – though they won't be at Cannes – include Richard Ayoade's The Double, Jonathan Glazer's Under the Skin, Steve McQueen's Twelve Years a Slave, the latest new Michael Winterbottom movie (there's always...

Last week saw the release of the second season of the brilliant The Walking Dead, one of the best and most talked-about television programmes currently on the air – and about to kick off with its anticipated third season.
And this week brings with it the release of one of the year’s most successful films in the form of The Hunger Games, very much one of the biggest blockbusters of 2012, beginning what is set to become an immense franchise in the years to come.
There are a lot of films coming to the shelves this week, so I shall press on.
My picks of the week:
Gary Ross’ The Hunger Games & Lasse Hallström’s Salmon Fishing in the Yemen.
The Office: An American Workplace – Season 7 & Boardwalk Empire – Season 2.
And, of course, the Blu-ray release of Steven Spielberg’s Jaws.

You want to hear something interesting? The top selling version of The Hunger Games on Amazon as I write this up is the [amazon asin="B008602KQI" text="Instant Video Version"], not the DVD or the Blu-ray. As far as I can remember this is the first time I've ever seen this happen with a new release. It's probably only because I believe Amazon releases those a week early to entice people to buy them before they then buy a physical copy, but it's a clear sign to me that the times... they are a'changin'.
Jaws I wrote up my review of this new Blu-ray release of Jaws just last night and highly recommend fans of the film pick it up. It's got an immaculate transfer, vivid, cleaned up and vastly superior to anything I've ever seen plus a restored audio track and, for the first time ever on home video, the feature length making-of documentary "The Shark is Still Working.

It's a pity that Assassin's Bullet, possibly the first Isaac Florentine film to receive a Stateside theatrical release, happens to be one of his weakest. A martial-artist-turned-filmmaker, Florentine (born Yitzhak Florentin) has carved out a niche in the direct-to-video world as an old-school action director with a knack for choreographing and composing fight scenes. Wide-angles lenses, longish shot durations (by contemporary standards, anyway), and a sense of follow-through are the hallmarks of Florentine's action-directing style—an appreciative aesthetic where every element serves the bodies and movements of the athlete-performers (Florentine's leads are more often than not Mma fighters, more than capable of doing their own stunts).
Originally titled Sofia (as in the city), Assassin's Bullet is a sub-De Palma riff on the Bulgarian capital's status as a popular B-movie shooting location. This identity disorder—Sofia is one of contemporary cinema's most filmed cities, yet rarely plays itself— is personified by...

Most won't recognize director Isaac Florentine's name, but he's one of the better straight-to-video action directors around. He's been in the business for decades, but in recent years he's really started to shine with movies like Ninja and Undisputed sequels Last Man Standing and Redemption. If you haven't seen any of them, but you respect a good kick to the face, you should definitely check them out. Undisputed III: Redemption in particular could teach Hollywood a thing or two about how to choreograph a fight scene so it looks bone-crunchingly realistic. Florentine's latest is Assassin's Bullet and it's actually getting a limited theatrical release on August 3 ahead of its home video premiere on August 14. It looks to be a bit of a break from the...

Even by the admittedly low standards of a basically direct-to-video, shot-in-Bulgaria action thriller starring Christian Slater and Donald Sutherland as a pair of weathered old spies, "Assassin's Bullet" is a chore. It seems to have been created at some kind of magical nexus where sluggish plotting, technical ineptitude, and iffy performances meet. It's a smorgasbord of awfulness, but one that you can't even find yourself enjoying, in a guilty pleasure, can-you-honestly-believe-this? kind of way. It would be lucky to be one of those movies they premiere on Cinemax on Friday nights starring actors who clearly owed the IRS something. "Assassin's Bullet," which has a title that makes it sound like an extremely violent Xbox game, opens with some gauzy flashback sequence that looks like a cat walked across the keyboard while Final Cut X was open – jittery smash cuts, hazy digital effects, a general aura of Diy shamelessness. It involves a.

Christian Slater is out to save the world in “Assassin’s Bullet” (also known as “Sofia”), the former “Pump up the Volume” star’s latest (mostly) direct-to-dvd action movie for “Undisputed” director Isaac Florentine, who is building up quite the filmography in DVDland. (By the way, has it actually been 22 years since “Pump Up the Volume”? I love that movie. Hard Harry forever!) Anyhoo. Check out a trailer, poster, and images from the actioner below, people who enjoy checking out assets from upcoming action movies. So the killer is a woman. I hope that’s not some kind of surprise in the movie cause, well, it’s all over the trailer, isn’t it? When an unknown vigilante begins killing high-priority terrorists from America’s Most Wanted list in Europe, a former FBI field agent (Christian Slater) is brought in by the Us Ambassador (Donald Sutherland) to discover the identity of the assassin.

Having just returned from four days on the Sofia, Bulgaria set (the production at the time was shooting at UFO Studios just outside the city), here’s a bit of a casting update. As we previously reported, television actress Camilla Arfwedson has joined the cast of the film as ‘Sheriff Angela,’ the female lead who finds herself at odds with the series’ backwoods nemeses The Hillicker Brothers, this time portrayed by Bobi Dilev as ‘Three Finger’ (the only actor to ever reprise that role in the series), Radoslav Purvanov as ‘One Eye’ and Georgi Karlukovski as ‘Saw Tooth.’
Joining them are actors Simon Ginty as ‘Billy,’ Oliver Hoare as ‘Julian,’ Amy Lennox as ‘Cruz,’ Paul Luebke (Djinn) as ‘Gus,...

[1] Though Christian Slater's IMDb resume shows that he's been keeping himself busy over the past few years, it's been a while since he's released a high-profile film project. (I definitely did not remember that Without Men was ever a thing until I looked over Slater's filmography.) His upcoming horror flick Playback probably won't be the one to change that trend, but if you miss seeing the True Romance star on the big screen, you'll want to keep an eye for it out during the first quarter of next year. Magnet Releasing has just picked up the U.S. rights to the thriller, which was directed by Michael Nickles and also stars Toby Hemingway, Johnny Pacar, and rising star [2] Ambyr Childers. The story revolves around high school students who discover a disturbing secret in their hometown's history, awakening an evil spirit. Not the most inspired of concepts, but maybe it'll be fun.

After all this comedy's drama, "Breaking In" has snuck back onto the television schedule once again.
The Christian Slater-starring comedy about a group of young employees working at a digital security firm is getting a mid-season order of 13 episodes from Fox, Deadline reports. It was a late season addition to the schedule last season, and despite testing well, performed poorly in the ratings. It was assumed that the show was dead after airing seven episodes, which almost din't run themselves after being passed over the season before.
This marks, finally, a semi-success for Slater's recent television career; his past two shows, "The Forgotten" and "My Own Worst Enemy," were cancelled after one season. It also comes amidst a personal renaissance for the actor, who has been sober for half a decade now; he's involved in sixteen movies over this year and next, according to IMDb.com. That includes the drama "Sofia" with Donald Sutherland,...

Actor Christian Slater, star of Fox's upcoming comedy series Breaking In, has signed with UTA. He was previously with CAA. Slater, who built a career in movies, has done three back-to-back TV series in the past few years: NBC's My Own Worst Enemy, ABC's The Forgotten and Breaking In. He has a slew of features in the can, including Sofia, named after and filmed in the capital of my native Bulgaria.

America Lost And Found: The Bbs Story (Criterion) Perhaps the best DVD box set released this year, this ultimate cinefile stocking stuffer offered up by Criterion, the Rolls-Royce of home video labels, features seven seminal works from the late ‘60s-early ‘70s that were brought to life by cutting edge producers Bert Schneider, Steve Blauner and director/producer Bob Rafelson, the principals of Bbs Productions. In chronological order: Head (1968) star the Monkees, the manufactured (by Rafelson, et al), American answer to the Beatles who, like it or not, did make an impact on popular culture, particularly in this utterly surreal piece of cinematic anarchy (co-written by Jack Nicholson, who has a cameo), which was largely dismissed upon its initial release, but is now regarded as a counterculture classic. Easy Rider (1969) is arguably regarded as the seminal ‘60s picture, about two hippie drug dealers (director Dennis Hopper...
