As I sat down to start thinking about my Game of the Year list for 2024, I quickly realized just how packed this year was with great games. While there were a few big Aaa games that caught my eye, this was mostly a year of amazing smaller experiences grabbing my attention.

Given the sheer volume of games that came out, even highlighting ten on a best of the year list is going to cause some great games to fall through the cracks. With that in mind, here’s a list of some of the more under-the-radar games of 2024 that are worth seeking out.

In the past, filmmakers have talked about pushing the PG-13 rating to the limit, seeing what they can get away with before the Motion Picture Association slaps an R-rating on their work. However, until now, that conversation has rarely been brought up by a director of a PG-rated movie, especially one developed by Pixar.

In an interview with Empire (via Screen Rant), Elio co-director Madeline Sharafian shared that the animated movie will push the studio's ratings boundaries by including references to acclaimed horror classics like Alien, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and The Thing. "[Elio has] some sci-fi horror references. It's one of our best surprises, so I don't want to give away too much," she teased. "I'm always trying to push it to be weirder and a little creepier, to ride that line of the PG movie."

After launching its Kickstarter two years ago, indie developer Duonix Studios has announced that its single-player narrative horror game 10 Dead Doves will arrive on Steam on Friday (December) the 13th. A demo is also available on Steam.

Descendants: The Rise of Red star China Anne McClain reflected on her friend and former co-star, the late Cameron Boyce, saying the Disney actor would have been “really excited” about the film franchise’s trajectory.

“I think that he would’ve been really excited to see it and to see how [the movie] turned out because, to be honest, none of us knew how anyone was going to receive [the 2015 original],” McClain told People in a new interview.

During the Halloween season, Disney Channel chooses to celebrate the holiday with dedicated Halloween specials, all a part of something called "Monstober.

Pixar unveiled a big new project Friday night at D23 Expo with its promotion for “Hoppers,” a body-swap story starring Jon Hamm, Bobby Moynihan and Piper Curda.

The story follows a young girl, Mabel, who can transfer her mind into a robot beaver with the goal of going undercover in the animal kingdom. She winds up befriending a regal beaver, King George, and uniting the animals to fight off the plans of a real estate developer. The movie is targeted for release in spring 2026.

Hamm, an Emmy winner for “Mad Men” and nominee this year for FX’s “Fargo,” will voice a greedy mayor with development plans. Curda, who voices Mabel, is a former Disney Channel actor who appeared in multiple episodes of the 2013-214 series “A.N.T Farm.” She also was featured in multiple episodes of the 2018-2022 CW superhero series “Legacies.”

Moynihan is an animation superstar and “Saturday Night Live” alum.

Spider-Man franchise producer Amy Pascal has admitted to not knowing who Zendaya was when she auditioned to play Michelle "Mj" Jones-Watson in 2017's Homecoming. In a recent interview, she shared how she was unaware that Zendaya was a former Disney Channel star.

As part of Vogue's profile on Zendaya to promote her upcoming movie, Challengers, Pascal recalled how she and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige initially had no idea "who she was" when Zendaya came in to audition for the role of acerbic introvert Michelle. "She was wearing no makeup and she was just dressed like a regular girl, and we were like, 'Oh my God, she’s amazing. She has to be in the movie,'" she recalled. "And then we found out she was a totally famous person, and felt really stupid."

If you’ve been anywhere near a television in the last couple of years, odds are you’re already familiar with Dominic Burgess. Lightyear Entertainment has acquired U.S. rights to coming-of-age drama “Edge of Everything” from Visit Films. The film stars Sierra McCormick, previously seen in Slamdance award winner “The Vast of Night.”

The film is from writer-director duo Sophia Sabella and Pablo Feldman, who are making their feature-length narrative debut. McCormick plays a teen going through the seemingly unbearable trials and tribulations of growing up.

The drama will have its U.S. premiere on Feb. 8 at the Santa Barbara Film Festival, and a limited theatrical release will follow in the spring, after which the film will be released on digital platforms and in the home entertainment market.

Insane Clown Posse have announced an otherworldly edition of their annual Gathering of the Juggalos event, and keeping with the “Wicked Clowns from Outer Space” theme, the 2023 lineup features Alien Ant Farm, a host of extraterrestrial attractions, and a tribute set to the group’s definitive 1999 tour of the same name.

The 23rd Gathering will go down July 5th-8th at Legend Valley in Thornville, Ohio, which has become a “UFO hotspot” according to the band in a statement. For their headlining set, Icp will offer a faithful recreation of their “Wicked Clowns from Outer Space” set, which launched in 1999 and concluded only months before the first Gathering of the Juggalos in July 2000. Those who are listeners to our Safe Room Podcast will note that back in December, Neil and Jay talked a bit about Duonix Studios‘ retro survival horror title 10 Dead Doves. The team announced this morning that the game’s Kickstarter is now live.

10 Dead Doves has been in development since February 2021 with a 3-person team. Currently, the game has a 30-minute demo that you can check out for free via itch.io.

The Kickstarter is set at $10,000, which would “provide [the team] with enough resources to recoup the heaviest costs involved in self-funding the project.” Any additional funding would give the team more room to develop additional content. Obviously, there are a range of reward tiers for those who pledge a certain amount towards the project.

Grace Ryder is really the heart of the series, and it's been long overdue for the season to give her a meaty storyline or at least pick up one from her past.

And thankfully, 9-1-1 Lone Star Season 4 Episode 13 will deliver on that as we check back in with Grace's family, including her parents and previously unseen sisters.

Much of 9-1-1 Lone Star Season 4 has scaled back on the emergencies and the calls that the teams have been dispatched to in favor of providing us with more personal arcs and insight into the various characters off the job as much as on it.

It's been a polarizing decision with mixed results, but no one can deny how great it is when they've taken time to delve deeper into characters, especially those of whom we haven't learned much about over the years.

Despite the glaring absence of Dorothy and Space Case, Doom Patrol Season 4 Episode 6 does an admirable job lining up (almost) all the major players at the height of potential catastrophe.

I'll probably pour one out for Bunbury later, but I am glad the foul-mouthed rabbit mage didn't turn out to be a secret Immortus agent.

And if all it takes for Rita and Rouge to forgive each other and team up is a reverse-aging spell, an Ant Farm infiltration mission, and the imminent end of existence (must be Thursday), then it's no wonder it took so long.

They are quite the delightful duo when they aren't at each other's throats. There's a wonderful balance to their partnership.

When Rita wants to admit defeat and return home, Rouge bolsters her energies and holds her to their teenage pledge.

With the high level of bonkers shenanigans (in both quantity and quality) we have come to expect from the series, I appreciate getting Doom Patrol Season 4 Episode 1 and Doom Patrol Season 4 Episode 2 together as a kickstart to the season.

The first hour situates the audience, providing information such as how much time has passed and how the team members are adjusting to yet another new abnormal when they realize they are the cause of the future Butt-pocalypse.

And the second hour focuses on their attempts to derail the Butt-pocalypse as well as -- you guessed it -- the Butts.

In all honesty, I'm not sure I can handle recognizing the Butts as sentient, intelligent, and emotionally complex creatures.

Exclusive: I Gotta Ask My Wife, a multi-cam comedy starring Saturday Night Live alum Finesse Mitchell, is in the works at Fox, Deadline has learned exclusively. The project hails from Mitchell, who also executive produces and writes alongside Emmy-nominated scribe Warren Hutcherson (The Bernie Mac Show).

Inspired by Mitchell’s stand-up act, I Gotta Ask My Wife is an edgy comedy that follows the friendship among three men, all living in the same apartment building, at different stages in their romantic lives: one in his 20s, single and looking for love; one is a thirtysomething who can’t get divorced fast enough; and one a happily married father of two (Mitchell) who just wants to “chill” (code for: stay out of trouble) at home with his wife.

“American Horror Story” spinoff “American Horror Stories” debuted Thursday on FX on Hulu with an homage to the original franchise’s iconic first season, “Murder House.” By the end of the two-part series premiere episode, titled “Rubber (Wo)man,” murderous heroine Scarlett (played by Sierra McCormick) has managed to do the unthinkable: Escape the Murder House and live to not just tell the tale — but return every year at Halloween to visit the eternally trapped ghosts of her love Ruby (Kaia Gerber) and dads Michael (Matt Bomer) and Troy (Gavin Creel).

We’ve seen many others try and fail at this task throughout “AHS” history, and most of the time it’s because someone who claimed to care about the person ended up killing them to keep them there.

Although we've only seen two episodes so far, FX's American Horror Stories has already given us a new iconic character in the premiere: Sierra McCormick's Scarlett, aka the Rubber Woman. It’s hard to believe that American Pie arrived over twenty years ago as it seems like just yesterday that we were all listening to wild band camp stories and getting hilarious advice from Jim’s awkward father. Over two decades later, the iconic R-rated comedy has spawned multiple sequels and spinoffs and inspired tons of other comedies, but as of yet, we’re still left waiting for a proper American Pie 5.

Whether or not the fifth installment ever happens remains to be seen, of course, but in the meantime, the brand is continuing to pump out spinoffs and the latest is American Pie Presents: Girls’ Rules. As you can see in the trailer up above, it’s not exactly the new outing that fans may be hoping for, but it’s still the first entry in the franchise in quite a long time and looks to be following...

Neal McDonough, who has recently been seen on shows like Yellowstone, Altered Carbon and the Robert Zemeckis series Project Blue Book, has signed on to star in Red Stone, an indie thriller written and directed by Derek Presley. McDonough, who also serves as an executive producer on the film, will star alongside Dash Melrose (Little Fires Everywhere), Michael Cudlitz (The Walking Dead), Dominic Scott Kay (Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End), Jason Douglas (The Walking Dead), Allie DeBerry (A.N.T. Farm), and Mike Dopud (The Predator).

Filming is currently underway in Texas. The story follows Motley (Melrose), whose life spirals out of control as he’s forced to go on the run from southern crime lord, Jed Haywood (Cudlitz). Boon, Haywood’s best henchman and close friend, is tracking Motley and over the course of one day, both Motley and Boon go on a spiritual journey as their fate brings them together for a showdown.

Disney Plus has revealed the full list of movies and TV shows, both original and pre-existing content, that will be coming to the streaming service over the next month. The site will be adding the new titles to its library in three batches throughout June. It’s not the biggest haul of new material if we’re being honest, but there are a few key items you’ll want to look out for.

Most notably, Artemis Fowl is hitting Disney Plus on June 12th. The fantasy movie directed by Thor‘s Kenneth Branagh, and based off the popular Ya novels by Eoin Colfer, was originally set to debut in theaters but has been switched to a streaming release given the Covid-19 pandemic. This is the first time the studio has made such a move, but it’s been noted they may do so again if this one turns out to be successful.

Outer Banks is a coming-of-age action mystery, replete with danger, romance, and good old-fashioned whodunit. The 10-episode season, which premiered on Netflix on April 15, features standout performances by a slew of relatively unknown young actors— many of whom, this is their first major role. Multiple members of the production team behind ABC’s “Fresh Off the Boat” are developing the comedy series “Asian Descent” at Freeform, Variety has learned exclusively.

“Fresh Off the Boat” executive producers Melvin Mar and Jake Kasdan are both onboard the project, along with series writer and co-producer Cindy Fang.

“Asian Descent” is described as a dark comedy about an aspiring musician who sets aside her dreams and pride by moving back home with her immigrant parents and leans on her high school friends to figure out the next chapter of her life.

Fang is writing the new show with Mar and Kasdan onboard as executive producers. Fox 21 Television Studios will produce.

When Sara Parriott and Josann McGibbon first teamed up 32 years ago, the door had just started to crack open for female film writers.

“We came at the right time, it was right when women writers were coming into vogue,” McGibbon said. “It was the time of ‘Thelma and Louise’ and there was two of us — a blonde and a brunette and it all fell into place.”

Parriott and McGibbon’s latest project, “Descendants 2,” premieres Friday night on Disney Channel, as well as ABC, Freeform, Disney Xd and Lifetime. Disney Channel has given the greenlight for “Descendants 2,” the sequel to its hit original movie “Descendants.” Dove Cameron, Cameron Boyce, Booboo Stewart, Sofia Carson and Mitchell Hope will reprise their roles from the original film, as children of famous fairy tale characters like Maleficent, Jafar, the Evil Queen from Snow White and more. Disney Channel on Friday announced that China Anne McClain (A.N.T. Farm) is joining the cast of Descendants 2 as Uma, the daughter of legendary sea witch Ursula. McClain previously voiced Freddie, the daughter of The Princess and the Frog‘s Dr. Facilier, in the animated series Descendants: Wicked World.

The sequel — premiering in 2017, with production slated to begin this summer — will also introduce the offspring of Captain Hook and Beauty and the Beast‘s Gaston; their casting will be announced soon.

The cast of the original 2015 film will also return for Descendants 2 — Dove Cameron as Mal, daughter of Maleficent; Cameron Boyce as Carlos, son of Cruella de Vil; Booboo Stewart as Jay, son of Jafar; Sofia Carson as Evie, daughter of the Evil Queen; and Mitchell Hope as King Ben, son of Belle and the Beast — along with Kenny Ortega as director, executive producer and choreographer.

“Just when you thought ‘Happily Ever After’ had come to the land of Auradon, Descendants 2 turns the page to reveal a whole new level of mystery and surprise,” warns Disney Channel president Gary Marsh.

Eighteen-year-old Stefanie Scott has been acting in Hollywood for years and is best known for her breakout role on Disney Channel's A.N.T. Farm. The young star has two major movies coming out this year, Insidious: Chapter 3 and Jem and the Holograms. Stefanie opened up about both films during a visit to Popsugar's New York studio. She explained why making Insidious 3 was "way more fun" than other projects and dished on just how long it took to get an '80s rock-star look for her part in Jem and the Holograms.
