Charlie Hunnam & Ron Perlman Had a Second Collaboration 4 Years After Sons of Anarchy Premiered
Image
In between Sons of Anarchy Season 3 and Season 4, Ron Perlman and Charlie Hunnam stepped out of their regular biker roles as Clay Morrow and Jax Teller to make the comedy-drama 3, 2, 1... Frankie Go Boom. The film is the only other project out there outside of Sons of Anarchy to see them both in one place.

3, 2, 1... Frankie Go Boom is the exact opposite of Sons of Anarchy. Hunnam plays Frank, who has been humiliated by his older brother, Bruce (Chris O'Dowd) for years. Now that Bruce has quit drugs and is trying to turn his life around, Frank hopes that things will be different. However, he is disappointed.

From Perlman's transgender hacker to Chris Noth's out-of-work Hollywood star who pops up at random places, the film is filled with colorful characters. However, unlike Jax Teller, who's confrontational and impulsive, Hunnam's lead character is anything but. Frank is a little broken, having...

You-Hoo: Wolfe’s Als Drama Tries To Balance Sentiment With Schmaltz

Hilary Swank seems attracted to playing daunted heroines, continually up against considerable odds—the homophobic rednecks of Boys Don’t Cry, the white trash family unit of Million Dollar Baby, Gary Marshall’s ineptness in New Year’s Eve, and recently the misogyny of the Old West in The Homesman. Her latest drama, You’re Not You, finds the actress experiencing the deteriorating effects of Als (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, a neurodegenerative disorder. Though winning two Oscars, Swank isn’t always the herald of great cinema, more often than not making questionable choices for someone of her caliber and talent. Flanked by co-stars like Emmy Rossum and Josh Duhamel, a director whose last film was Nights in Rodanthe (2008), and co-written by Shana Feste, the director of sugary sap like The Greatest (2009) and Country Strong...

Baymax Needs Upgrades in Disney & Marvel's 'Big Hero 6' Full Trailer
Following our first look at the new line-up of animated heroes in Disney and Marvel's Big Hero 6, the first full trailer has arrived. However, we don't get much of a look at characters we haven't seen yet. Most of the trailer focuses on Hiro Hamada getting interrogated by police after he encounters some bad guy with "microbots" while Baymax tries to fix himself with tape. And then we get to see Hiro upgrading his puffy robot so he can fly, which is pretty cool. We do get a brief encounter with some of the new heroes as they are chased by the villain, but they're not wearing their superhero suits yet. This still looks great though. Watch! Here's the first full trailer for Disney & Marvel's Big Hero 6, originally from Moviefone: Big Hero 6 is co-directed by Don Hall (Winnie the Pooh) and Chris Williams (Bolt) with a script...

Robot Baymax Peeks Out on Disney's Two Posters for 'Big Hero 6'
Last month finally brought our first official look at Marvel and Disney's animated collaboration with an adaptation of Big Hero 6, and we got a glimpse of robotics prodigy Hiro along with his chubby, playful robot Baymax. Now a couple new posters show off the cute robot and would-be crimefighter being as adorable as can be. Baymax peeks out on one poster, while another features Hiro attempting to apply the sleek armor he's designed, just like in the teaser trailer, but the robot's big gut is creating some problems. We're very excited to see more from the animated comic book adaptation, and we'll keep you updated. Look! Here's two new posters for Disney & Marvel's Big Hero 6 from Imp Awards: Big Hero 6 is co-directed by Don Hall (Winnie the Pooh) and Chris Williams (Bolt) with a script that Jordan Roberts (3,2,1...Frankie Go Boom) co-wrote with the former. Must Watch: First Teaser Trailer for Marvel & Disney's 'Big Hero 6'
It's time to meet Hiro Hamada and his adorable robot friend Baymax in the first cute trailer for Disney & Marvel's first animated collaboration, Big Hero 6. There's no indication of the story or voice cast, but we do get a hint of what this young robotics prodigy wants to do with his chubby, squishy robot as he's trying to fit him into some heroic armor. However, all the robot seems to want is the soccer ball. It's hard to get a vibe of the entire film since we don't see any of the other crime fighters that Hiro aspires to join with Baymax, but the teaser trailer is amusing. We're definitely looking forward to seeing more. Watch the trailer below! Here's the first trailer for Marvel & Disney's Big Hero 6, straight from Yahoo: Big Hero 6 is co-directed by Don Hall (Winnie the Pooh) and Chris Williams (Bolt) with a...

Baymax & Hiro Blast Off on Marvel and Disney's 'Big Hero 6' Poster
Tomorrow we'll finally get to see the teaser trailer for Big Hero 6, the first animated endeavor from Marvel Studios and their new home at Disney. The film doesn't hit until November, but the project was on the list of my most anticipated films of the year, and the first look photos were great. Now the teaser poster has arrived, and while it doesn't show much, it's a fun little look at the feet of robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada and his robot Baymax as they blast off into the air. We're still waiting to hear more about the cast and the story, so hopefully the teaser trailer sheds some light when it arrives at 9am Pt tomorrow morning. Look below! Here's the first poster for Marvel & Disney's Big Hero 6 from Imp Awards: Big Hero 6 is co-directed by Don Hall (Winnie the Pooh) and Chris Williams (Bolt) with a...

First Look: Disney & Marvel's First Animated Feature Film 'Big Hero 6'
Ever since getting a first look at San Fransokyo, we've been waiting to see more of Walt Disney Animation and Marvel's first animated big screen collaboration Big Hero 6. With the release of the first trailer coming on Thursday, the first images from the film have finally arrived, giving us a first look at the young robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada and his best friend, a robot named Baymax. So far we only know that T.J. Miller, Maya Rudolph and Jamie Chung are providing voices, so hopefully the first trailer will reveal the rest of the cast. Either way, seeing the first animated Marvel comic adaptation on the big screen has us excited. Frankie Go Boom – The Blu Review
Did you have that mean older brother that made your childhood Hell with obnoxious pranks and bullying? Imagine if that sibling as an adult videotaped you in a sex act where you couldn’t quit ‘perform’ and posted it online for all the world to see. That’s the hilarious premise of Frankie Go Boom, a raunchy comedy about brothers, families, alcoholic porn stars, a domestic pig, and Ron Perlman in drag.

Frankie Go Boom opens with a home video from someone’s suburban childhood, as young Bruce tricks his little brother Frankie into falling into a pit. Their mother rushes out in her bathrobe screaming with her boobs popping out. Jump ahead twenty years and Frankie’s (Charlie Hunnam) brother Bruce (Chris O’Dowd) has just got out of prison and is back in his life, something Frankie is not too happy about. His whole life Bruce has been...

Frankie Go Boom Blu-ray Review
Writer-director Jordan Roberts' Frankie Go Boom is one of those films that seemed destined for cult comedy status.  The premise is simple enough: a young man, tormented all his life by his older brother's pranks, must track down an unauthorized and rather embarrassing sex tape before it gets out to the general public.  Then you look at the impressive cast - Charlie Hunnam, Chris O'Dowd, Lizzy Caplan, Chris Noth and Ron Perlman - and you wonder, how can this one possibly miss?  I decided to check out the newly-released Blu-ray to find out.  Hit the jump to check out my review. The Feature: Since we haven't reviewed the feature film here before, I'll do a brief rundown and share my thoughts.  I was initially interested in Frankie Go Boom for two reasons: the cast and the possibility of this becoming a cult comedy.  I'm a fan of Hunnam from...

Blu Review: Frankie Go Boom
Cinelinx rumbles with the Frankie Go Boom Blu-ray!

The Set-up

Frank (Charlie Hunnam) has his world turned upside down when his loser brother Bruce (Chris O'Dowd) puts a video of his one night stand online. Also stars Lizzy Caplan, Chris Noth, Ron Perlman, and a pig.

Written and Directed by:  Jordan Roberts

The Delivery

Frankie Go Boom boasts a pretty talented cast: Sons of Anarchy stars Charlie Hunnam and Ron Perlman, as well as Lizzy Caplan, Chris O'Dowd, and Chris Noth. Unfortunately, the film relies less on the characters or genuine humor for laughs, and more on uncomfortable situations and humiliation. With only a handful of exceptions, it doesn't work. It's really too bad, because there is a potentially enjoyable, quirky little comedy here. It is just buried under a number of groan-worthy scenes that make you wonder what director/screenwriter Jordan Roberts was thinking.

Frankie (Charlie Hunnam) is actually...

'Cloud Atlas', 'Liz & Dick' and 'Texas Chainsaw' on DVD and Blu-ray This Week
Cloud Atlas The Wachowskis and co-director Tom Tykwer tackled some interesting things with Cloud Atlas and it had one of the best scores of last year, but I can't deny the fact I really have no interest in returning to it. The Blu-ray does have a large number of features to explore and perhaps a little more discussion could improve my impression, but after seeing it in Toronto last year, and discussing it there, I'm not sure there is much that could be revealed to change my opinion that much.

A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III Written and directed by Roman Coppola, this one arrived shortly after he and Wes Anderson were nominated for an Oscar for their Moonrise Kingdom screenplay, but the reviews and comments I've seen don't suggest this is a film worth searching out and, in all honesty, the involvement of Charlie Sheen turns...

Blu-ray & DVD Release Date: May 14, 2013

Price: DVD $19.98, Blu-ray $26.98

Comedy movie Frankie Go Boom proves one thing: Ron Perlman (Conan the Barbarian) does not make an attractive woman.

Written and directed by Jordan Roberts (Around the Bend), the film tells the story of Frankie (Charlie Hunnam, TV’s Sons of Anarchy), who has been tortured and humiliated by his brother Bruce (Chris O’Dowd, This is 40) his entire life by posting videos of Frankie online. Sons of Anarchy – Find Out Why Charlie Hunnam Hates Ron Perlman Samcro Style
There isn’t anything weirder than to hear some of the things actors will do when preparing for a particular part, but you don’t normally hear of actors reaching for such heights in television series. They usually have to play their characters for years, so doing something “method” – completely emerging yourself in a role, even outside of filming – wouldn’t be something to do. Could you imagine if Bryan Cranston acted like Walter White from Breaking Bad all the time? It’s just not something that’s done, which makes Charlie Hunnam’s decision to shun Sons of Anarchy co-star Ron Perlman even more outlandish.

Season 5 has put Hunnam’s character, Jax Teller, into the position of president of Samcro and given him a lot of anger and hatred directed toward Perlman’s Clay Morrow. In order to channel those intense emotions, Hunnam opted to distance himself from Perlman...

'Soa' scoop: Why Hunnam stopped talking to Perlman this season -- Exclusive
Ron Perlman, Jimmy Smits, Katey Sagal, Drea de Matteo, Mark Boone Junior, Dayton Callie, Kim Coates, Rockmond Dunbar, Tommy Flanagan, Charlie Hunnam, Ryan Hurst, William Lucking, Michael Ornstein, Emilio Rivera, Theo Rossi, McNally Sagal, Winter Ave Zoli, Niko Nicotera, Maggie Siff, David Labrava, Chris Reed, Ryder Londo, and Rusty Coones in Sons of Anarchy (2008)
When the Sons of Anarchy script called for Jax Teller to let out every last bit of hate he had for Clay Morrow (Ron Perlman) this season, Charlie Hunnam didn’t just act it – he lived it. Off screen, Hunnam decided to avoid Perlman at all costs. If they were in the same vicinity, he’d flat out ignore him.

The trouble is, he didn’t let Perlman in on his plan.

“I decided as difficult as it was going to be, I wasn’t going to talk with him, not even say good morning to him and not tell...

Film Independent Forum Dissects the Rapidly Evolving VOD World
Jordan Roberts
It's an ever-evolving and omnipresent element of the independent distribution landscape, but VOD is still tough to pin down. Enter the panelists at the Film Independent Forum's October 21 session "Crunching the Numbers: VOD Calculations Revealed." Lending immediacy to the proceedings was Jordan Roberts, writer-director of "3...2...1...Frankie Go Boom," a film now playingat the Sunset 5, a stone's throw from the panel's home at the DGA Theater. Nolan Gallagher, founder/CEO of Gravitas Ventures, the company helping Roberts with its non-theatrical release, quickly divided the overarching "VOD" label into three distinct camps. Transactional VOD describes cable-based services or platforms like iTunes that charge a specific fee per rental. Subscription VOD covers packages like Netflix or Hulu Plus that charge a basic rate for unlimited consumption and ad-sponsored/free VOD affords viewers a cost-free viewing experience, albeit with a...

Lizzy Caplan, Charlie Hunnam, and Chris O'Dowd in Frankie Go Boom (2012)
3,2,1… Frankie Go Boom Movie Review
Lizzy Caplan, Charlie Hunnam, and Chris O'Dowd in Frankie Go Boom (2012)
Title: 3,2,1… Frankie Go Boom Director: Jordan Roberts Starring: Charlie Hunnam, Lizzy Caplan, Chris O’Dowd, Chris Noth, Ron Perlman, Nora Dunn, Whitney Cummings, Sam Anderson Provided one submits to its base level of intentional ridiculousness, there’s some wacky charm to be found in the low-budget, somewhat awkwardly titled “3,2,1… Frankie Go Boom” (a play at iTunes eyeball-catching, via its listing of numeric titles first… honestly), a comedy of fraternal bickering that hinges on scrambled efforts to squash a leaked sex tape. A bawdy conceit worthy of Judd Apatow gets a madcap spin by way of “Get Shorty” in writer-director Jordan Roberts’ self-financed affair, a choppy collection of character-based sketch ideas that’s elevated by a talented, game [ Read More ]

Exclusive: Lizzy Caplan Talks 3,2,1… Frankie Go Boom, Acting Drunk, More
Lizzy Caplan
From “Mean Girls” to “Cloverfield,” Lizzy Caplan delivered a string of sharp big screen performances over the last 10 years that rendered her recognizable and appreciated, if not quite an immediately known name and commodity to the average filmgoer. Equally well received episodic work on “True Blood,” “Party Down” and “New Girl” helped change that, by degrees. Now, with a couple movies seeing release within a few months of one another, Caplan seems on the verge of shedding the label of “critics’ darling” and achieving a wider fame. In her new film, “3,2,1… Frankie Go Boom,” she plays Lassie, a wound-up gal who becomes the unwitting partner of the equally unwitting title character (Charlie Hunnam) in [ Read More ]

The CoF Weekend Preview: Ok Ben We Get It, You’re Awesome
Welcome to The CoF Weekend Preview, here is a look at what’s opening this weekend. Check out our Fall & Holiday Movie Guide for the rest of the year’s releases. Stay tuned in the coming weeks for a new The Review, KFC and CoF Show!

Argo - Rt (61%) – Trailer

After Gone Baby Gone and The Town, Ben Affleck really doesn’t have much more to prove with his ability to act in and direct a great movie. He’s going for Oscar gold with this one, and it should come easy with a ‘true story’, pro-American touch. There is also a great cast that includes everyone’s favorite John Goodman!

Sinister - Rt (94%) – Trailer

This movie looks legitimately scary and twisted and I can’t want to see it. Ethan Hawke is a great choice for a movie like this; he looks scared and paranoid all the time anyways.

Argo (2012)
Out This Week: From 'Argo' to 'Psychopaths,' 8 Reviews of New Releases
Argo (2012)
This weekly column is intended to provide reviews of nearly every new indie release (and occasionally some studio films). Specific release dates and locations follow each review. In some cases, links to longer reviews are provided at the end of the capsule. Reviews This Week "Argo" "3.2.1...Frankie Go Boom" "The Iran Job" "Middle of Nowhere" "The Revisionaries" "Seven Psychopaths" "The Thieves" "A Whisper to a Roar" *** "Argo" Equally a slick political thriller, intelligent period piece and sly Hollywood satire, Ben Affleck's "Argo" maintains a careful balance between commentary and entertainment value. Stepping beyond the raw thriller qualities that distinguished his first two directing efforts, "Gone Baby Gone" and "The Town," the actor-director successfully broadens those skills with a historical...

New to Theatres This Weekend: Argo, Seven Psychopaths, Sinister
It's another big release week with no less than five major movies hitting theatres and quite a few smaller films as well. Ben Affleck's Argo will attempt to build on some solid buzz coming out of the Toronto International Film Festival, as will Martin McDonagh's Seven Psychopaths. Scott Derrickson's Sinister is poised to become the first big horror hit of the Halloween season, while Atlas Shrugged: Part II will complete the story that was started by its critically panned predecessor. But they'll all have to go through Here Comes the Boom, the Kevin James Mma comedy that could easily choke out the competition this weekend. In select theatres we also have Smashed starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Aaron Paul, the Oscar bait-y War of the Buttons, and Nobody Walks, co-written by Lena Dunham. What will you be watching this weekend? Argo Seven Psychopaths Sinister Here Comes the Boom...

Q&A: '3, 2, 1... Frankie Go Boom' Star Lizzy Caplan Enjoys Your Humiliation
Lizzy Caplan is cool. She's so cool, in fact, that we named her as one of the 25 Coolest People in Movies a few weeks ago, mostly based on her exceptionally well-chosen projects (and a little bit on some extra je ne sais quoi). By our counter-culture standards, her "Mean Girls" character Janis Ian was the best of the cast, and the rest of Caplan's resume — including parts in "Freaks and Geeks," "Party Down," "Cloverfield," "New Girl," "127 Hours" and cult favorite web series "Wainy Days" — reads like an application to the Cool Hall of Fame (an imaginary institution we've just made up now, essentially guaranteeing we'll never be inducted, ourselves).

Now with a starring role in the cutthroat indie comedy "3, 2, 1... Frankie Go Boom," Caplan sheds some clothing and ponders the nature of humiliation: her own, her co-stars' and that of random dudes getting hit in the goolies with gardening tools.

"Frankie Go Boom...

Interviews: 3, 2, 1... Frankie Go Boom
Hitting theaters this Friday, 3,2,1... Frankie Go Boom is an off-the-wall comedy from writer/director Jordan Roberts with a cast that includes Charlie Hunnam, Chris O'Dowd, Lizzy Caplan, Nora Dunn, Whitney Cummings, Ron Perlman and Chris Noth. In the film, Hunnam plays Frank Bartlett a seemingly ordinary young man who has spent his entire life being tortured, embarrassed and humiliated by his older brother Bruce (O'Dowd) who has a fondness for catching Frank on film at his very worst. As Frank begins a new phase of his life and hits it off with a girl, Lassie (Lizzy Caplan), he thinks that his brother is finally going to let him be. Before long, however, Frank finds himself, Lassie and Bruce involved in a situation that involves a sex tape, a feature film production and a 200...

Charlie Hunnam at an event for Sons of Anarchy (2008)
Charlie Hunnam is perhaps best known to American audiences as Jax Teller in FX’s rough-and-tumble “Sons of Anarchy.” In fact, he’s so convincing in that gritty biker serial that a lot of folks don’t even know that in real life he’s a considerably accented Brit. In his new film, however, Hunnam tosses another curveball — returning to comedy for the first time in many years, in writer-director Jordan Roberts’ “3,2,1… Frankie Go Boom.” In it, Hunnam plays the perpetually beleaguered title character, whose newly sober, would-be filmmaker brother, Bruce (Chris O’Dowd, of “Bridesmaids”), throws his life into further disarray by posting a sex tape of Frank’s. For ShockYa, Brent Simon recently had [ Read More ]

Review: Celebrity, Notoriety & Living In Public As 'Frankie Go Boom'
'Frankie Go Boom' opens with a home video from a long-ago washed-out suburban childhood, as Bruce tricks his brother Frankie into a pitfall prank that's both caught on tape and a trap for the two of them; flashing forward to adulthood -- or something like it -- Frankie (Charlie Hunnam) has exiled himself from everything, holing up in Death Valley to write. And Bruce (Chris O'Dowd, with a solidly American accent) is just getting out of rehab, convinced that the "films" he makes -- really, just footage -- of disasters like the one that befell Frankie's wedding three years ago, mean he's a director, what with their huge online "hit" numbers… Capturing an L.A. of thwarted and foolish ambition, as well as a family dynamic between two brothers who may be more similar than they would like, writer-director Jordan Roberts' 'Frankie Go Boom' is...

Exclusive: Ron Perlman Talks 3,2,1… Frankie Go Boom, Pacific Rim and Sex Tapes
Ron Perlman
There are plenty of actors who’ve made their living playing tough guys. But Ron Perlman is different than that. With his booming voice and imposing physicality, he simply has a larger-than-life quality that he’s sometimes put to use playing heavies and villains, but as often as not (“Beauty and the Beast,” the “Hellboy” movies) utilized against type in roles defined by their innate sensitivity. He does not, however, have what one might call feminine features. He exudes masculinity. So it’s more than a bit of a shock to see Perlman in his latest role, in writer-director Jordan Roberts’ “3,2,1… Frankie Go Boom,” in which he plays Phyllis, a web-savvy, post-operative [ Read More ]

Sex, Lies, and Youtube: Roberts’ Sophomore Effort a Sometimes Entertaining Slapstickery

To live, die, and make viral videos in L.A. seems to be the overriding glory in director Jordan Banks’ sophomore film, a slapstick romantic comedy with a tiny lacing of light raunch, 3,2,1…Frankie Go Boom. About as attention getting and simultaneously ungainly as its kitschy title, Roberts (who managed to snag Christopher Walken to star in his first film 2004’s Around the Bend) assembles an interesting cast. While not all of them are utilized to their full potential, there’s enough going on to keep you watching till the end, but the film’s core romantic catalyst, which is responsible for nearly the entire film’s narrative, is entirely unbelievable, and worse, dull. Banks’ film outweighs its jubilant welcome early on, but also happens to feature two of the most colorful cameos you might see this year.

9 Movies Made Better With Boom!
Between "Here Comes the Boom" and "3, 2, 1... Frankie Go Boom" both coming out this weekend, we've realized something rather critical: more movies should have boom in their titles.

So, with that in mind (and following one of the most ridiculous email exchanges Team NextMovie has ever had — and that's saying something) we decided to prove it and came up with nine movies made better with boom.

Take that, Michael Bay. Boom!

Chris Noth Is Boarding The Titanic As J.P. Morgan
New York -- The man widely known as "Big" gets even bigger: He's playing J.P. Morgan, one of history's towering business magnates.

It was one of Morgan's businesses that funded the Titanic, and Chris Noth appears in a supporting role in "Titanic: Blood and Steel," an epic 12-part miniseries about the building of the great ship. It premieres on six consecutive nights, with two episodes airing back to back, on the Encore cable network beginning Monday at 8 p.m. Edt.

Noth says the idea of playing Morgan intrigued him.

"He's sort of maligned today," Noth says. "But two times in our history he saved our banking system from falling apart and saved the country from bankruptcy and depression. He was a patriotic man. But he liked to make money, too.

"It was fun to come into this film and remind people whose wallet it was that was building the Titanic,...

Today's Hot Red Band Trailer: Ron Perlman Plays a Lady and Chris O'Dowd Tortures Charlie Hunnam in 3, 2, 1... Frankie Go Boom
A comedy about...love?

There are plenty of jokes and humorous situations in the red band trailer for the upcoming comedy 3, 2, 1... Frankie Go Boom, and there's also a lot of people yelling at each other and partial nudity. What there isn't is a clear idea of what the plotline is, so we'll stick with the description cast member Lizzy Caplan gave The Playlist last year.

It's about a guy whose life has been ruined by a YouTube video that has gone viral and so he's been hiding out and he gets brought back into civilization — because he's been living in the middle nowhere — by his really manipulative, horrible brother. And everybody in his life is sort of terrible [and it's about] how he deals with that.
