Hong Kong’s Pccw Media and Sk Global, the company behind Crazy Rich Asians and Delhi Crime, have teamed up for the big-budget Hong Kong-set drama series The Season.
The show is created and executive produced by writer and producer Yalun Tu, known for his work on NCIS: Hawaii and Wu Assassins. Chilean filmmaker Marialy Rivas (The Jetty) serves as lead director and executive producer.
The series has a buzzy, White Lotus-like premise set amidst Hong Kong high society.
The official logline reads: “Set against the opulence and striking contrasts of Hong Kong, The Season follows a privileged group of friends gathering for a summer of sun-drenched luxury as boating season begins. What starts as a glamorous escape soon spirals into a web of deception, power struggles, and life-altering consequences.”

Written and directed by Amy Wang, the co-creator of the short-lived Michelle Yeoh Netflix series The Brothers Sun and writer of the upcoming Crazy Rich Asians sequel, Slanted is the type of high-concept genre picture that had the potential to either be great or a total flop. Playing like a mix of Get Out and The Substance, Slanted is a smart, funny, and surprisingly emotional satire despite its occasional adherence to formula.
Slanted Review
Slanted follows an Asian-Amerian teenager who decides to take drastic measures to become popular and win the title of prom queen: she gets an experimental surgery that changes her appearance to make her look white. Blending body horror with fish-out-of-water comedy and high school teen drama, Slanted hits a lot of familiar tropes, but in a way that doesn’t quite feel derivative.

In his acidic 1931 satire, Black No More, the writer George Schuyler imagines a world where Black people can undergo an experimental surgery to become white. The depigmentation procedure, invented by an oily scientist, becomes extremely popular. People are eager to escape discrimination and reap the benefits of whiteness. The novel tested theories about assimilation and the color line. If everyone was of the same race, racism and its attendant violence would be eliminated, right?
I couldn’t stop thinking of Schuyler’s novel while watching Amy Wang’s assured directorial debut Slanted. The film, which premiered at SXSW and won the narrative feature competition, has a similar premise. It follows Joan Huang (Shirley Chen of Sundance darling Didi), a Chinese-American teenager desperate to be prom queen. She lives in a kind of Anywhere, U.S.A., a surrealist version of Main Street cleverly conjured by Wang and her production designer Ying-Te Julie Chen.

S.W.A.T. has been cancelled by CBS, but that doesn't mean lead actor Shemar Moore is finished. The charismatic star took to social media to plead his case to Netflix. Well, it's more like he cranked up the hype machine. And good for him.
The streaming business is obviously pretty cutthroat, as even wildly popular shows are cut after just one season. One cancellation in particular had me seriously considering dumping the top streaming service. Jettisoning The Brothers Sun was a terrible decision, and I certainly wasn't the only person who thought this.
Making it into season 2 is no guarantee, either. The Recruit is on the cut list as well. Hey, at least they got past the Valley of Death, aka canceled after Season 1. Streaming services can afford to be choosy, as there's virtually no limit to the number of shows they can offer. The opposite is true of those dinosaurs of home entertainment,...

Deli Boys opens with the unexpected death of Baba, a self-made deli mogul whose influence extends well beyond the world of sandwiches. His two sons, Mir and Raj, are left to manage the family business, but what they find is far from what they imagined.
Instead of inheriting a quaint deli empire, they discover their father’s secret life as a drug lord. With no experience in criminal operations, the brothers—each with their own set of personal flaws—are thrown into a whirlwind of chaos.
Mir, the more responsible of the two, had prepared for a future in the legitimate world of retail, but the shocking reality of the family’s criminal dealings takes him completely off guard.

Cameras are now rolling on Amazon MGM and Mattel's live-action Masters of the Universe movie in London, and THR brings word on three new additions to the cast.
Agatha All Along's Sasheer Zamata will play Suzie, Double Exposure actor Christian Vunipola will play Hussein, and Eternals stunt performer and The Brothers Sun actor Jon Xue Zhang will play Ram-Man.
Suzie and Hussein are most likely characters created for the movie (there's a good chance they will be friends of Adam on Earth), but Ram-Man should be very familiar to fans of the classic animated series and action figure line.

Netflix has developed a reputation for canceling shows prematurely, and 2024 only bolstered this idea. Netflix canceled the most shows of any major network or streaming platform last year, including some surprise cancelations that left fans disappointed. Netflix seems to know fairly quickly whether a show will be a hit or not, so it cancels shows after only a few weeks if they don't achieve their targets. Some Netflix shows wrapped things up on their own terms in 2024, like Arcane, but this is a rare luxury.
Many of the shows Netflix canceled in 2024 only had a single season to prove their worth. Some of the shocking cancelations include Dead Boy Detectives, The Brothers Sun and Kaos. All of these shows received positive reviews and could have developed as they continued, but Netflix's ruthless approach struck them down. There's a running joke online about Netflix canceling an amazing new series after just one season, while the streamer-turned-production studio spends millions every couple of years on the latest season of Stranger Things or Big Mouth. While fans once had one or two examples to throw at Netflix when making the argument, we're opening Pandora's Box, as new data has confirmed what we all knew about the monolith of streaming services. TV shows get canceled all the time, mainly due to poor ratings or excessive costs that cannot be maintained in the long-run. But, especially in 2024, Netflix had a habit of canceling some of their best new shows.
According to data from Watch In America, Netflix culled the most original programming of any streamer, or network in general, last year. The study counted new and ongoing shows that Netflix either canceled outright, or renewed for final seasons last year. 16 shows were properly canceled last year,...

Now that 2024 has come to a close, it’s official, Netflix once again handed out the most cancellations in the calendar year – though at this point, I don’t think anyone will find this surprising. While the streaming platform has gotten better as the years have gone by in giving shows final seasons and the chances to establish themselves with audiences, the streaming platform continues to have some of the biggest cancellation rates in the business and 2024 was no different.
In total, Netflix canceled 16 shows in 2024 while also handing six additional shows their walking papers with final season orders which are about as close to cancellations as you can get the only difference being that those lucky six shows will get to actually wrap up their runs with proper sendoffs. So when you combine the two groups, Netflix decided to end a whopping 22 shows in 2024 be it by canceling them directly or ordering final seasons.

2024 was another big year for television as new series like Shõgun, Nobody Wants This, Fallout, and The Penguin became major talking points. While those shows earned a lot of acclaim, awards recognition, and viewership, other shows that debuted in 2024 didn't get the same appreciation. Because only a loyal few were aware of their existence, they ended up getting axed after their debut season.
Additionally, other TV cancellations in 2024 were associated with shows that either premiered the previous year or ran for two or more seasons. Seeing the headlines that these series now have a short lifespan was heartbreaking for the small but mighty fanbases. From new series like Kaos and The Brothers Sun to multi-season gems like Chucky and Our Flag Means Death, these canceled shows in 2024 deserve more seasons and a better ending.

TV cancellations aren’t close to America’s most pressing problem headed into 2025 — but in an uncertain year for the entertainment industry, premature endings in creative workplaces pack as big a punch as ever.
Major guild strikes ended last year and the streaming bubble burst from 2022 has given platforms at least some time to recover since. Still, the countless impacts of Hollywood’s faltering business model could be felt throughout episodic and feature productions as dwindling work continued to move away from traditional opportunity hubs in Los Angeles. As film scenes in other U.S. states and Canada benefited from decline in Southern California, the swan song of peak television experienced an ongoing decrease in new series getting greenlit and an uptick in single-season cancellations.
From network staples ending this year to streaming favorites wrapping it up soon, the titles not returning say as much about the state of the...

Do you know how many series ended up being canceled after just one season on major streaming services? And we’re not talking about horrible, low-budget shows, but major projects that managed to attract a lot of fans. Do you? The exact number is unknown, but it is quite large, and our colleagues from The Wrap have just written an interesting expose on how this might be an issue going forward.
Canceling a series is always a complex process and it is the result of a number of factors that are combined into one decision that will always make a lot of people sad, because however bad a series is, it will always have a fanbase.

The explosion of content from Netflix, Disney+ and other streamers has resulted in more TV shows than any human can possibly watch. And while the glut of content created something for everyone, the era of peak TV is over, with contraction in Hollywood bringing several shows to an end — many after just one season.
Single-season streaming cancellations in 2024 have included the surprise axing of Disney’s “Star Wars” series “The Acolyte” — a show whose premiere performed well according to Disney+’s own metrics — and Netflix series such as “The Brothers Sun,” “Obliterated” and “Dead Boy Detectives,” which once reigned in the streamer’s Top 10 lists and top 100 most-watched TV titles for the first half of 2024.

Netflix has axed several shows in 2024 and a few are really angering fans!
It can be hard to be a Netflix subscriber. The streamer is home to some fantastic shows, many of which no other network or creator would take a chance on. Sadly, far too often, a great show only lasts one season, with Netflix canceling them for sometimes little rhyme or reason.
2024 was no different, with several shows ending. To be fair, a few weren’t that good, so they likely deserved the axing. Others just were rather forgettable so no big loss. But then there are a few shows that had great critical acclaim and amassed a loyal following, only to be canceled with little warning.
It’s aggravating and worse when some seem to have been given little chance to grow. Here are the shows Netflix has canceled in 2024 that really stick in the craw of...

An upcoming action thriller could very well be what every action movie fan has been waiting for. Sounding like the perfect cross between Liam Neesons 2008 hit Taken and director Gareth Evans The Raid, the movie boasts an incredible cast of martial arts actors with enviable action movie pedigree, a filmmaker with a penchant for stunts, and an exquisitely no-nonsense plot that should allow for the punches, kicks, and everything else in between to fly hard and fast.
Titled The Furious (which should tell you everything you need to know about what were in for), the action outing is all set to be helmed by Tanigaki Kenji, who is best known for his stunt work in the likes of the Donnie Yen movie Raging Fire, G.I. Joe spin-off Snake Eyes, and this years martial arts hit Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In. Without further ado, you can check out the synopsis for The Furious below,...

In a blow to workplace comedy fans, Netflix has decided to bring another one of its series to a halt. The streaming giant will not be renewing Unstable for a third season, according to recent reports. Created by and starring Rob Lowe, a beloved member of the Brat Pack, and his son Owen Lowe, the show struggled to gain traction among Netflix viewers, which led to the cancelation.
Unstable centers around the eccentric and chaotic world of a biotechnology company run by the charismatic but narcissistic-adjacent Ellis Dragon (Lowe) and his introverted son Jackson (Owen), who only arrives on the scene in order to save his father from spiraling and sending the company in ruins as he mourns the loss of his wife. The series explores the complicated relationship shared by the father-son duo and satirizes the dysfunctional workplace. Lowe and Owen act as executive producers alongside Victor Fresco, the...

This is not a drill. We repeat, this is not a drill. Netflix has renewed a show, folks — not cancelled, but renewed! After pulling the plug on Kaos just yesterday, consigning the modern-day mythological drama to the same streaming scrapheap in the sky as Dead Boy Detectives, The Brothers Sun, Ratched, and That 90s Show, the streaming giant is putting its televisual eggs in a Kate Wyler shaped basket. Per Variety's reporting, Keri Russell starring political thriller The Diplomat has landed a Season 3 renewal ahead of the launch of its second series later this month.
Whilst we've still got a couple of weeks yet before we find out how Russell's U.S. Ambassador deals with the fallout of Season 1's explosive finale — and just how exactly her on-again, off-again husband Hal (Rufus Sewell) made it out the other side in one piece — the wheels on The Diplomat's third season are already turning.

Netflix’s 2024 batch of family crime dramas have been quite the test of patience. Things started off pretty rocky with Fool Me Once, which featured rich people doing murderous things (I watched it in January and I don’t remember the details). That was followed by The Brothers Sun, which was packed with some of the most enjoyable stunts and a lot of heartwrenching mother-son drama. The streaming platform lulled me into a sense of comfort with the equally amazing House of Ninjas, which was about, you guessed it, a family full of Shinobi facing a deadly threat. Then, things started to go off the rails. Eric was all over the place. Tribhuvan Mishra CA Topper established some sort of stability. But the triple-punch delivered by The Accident, The Perfect Couple, and Blood Legacy demolished the genre’s reputation. And, while I thought they were done with this nonsense, now...

The series is adapted from Robert McCammon’s New York Times bestseller, “Stinger,” which follows a collection of differing personalities as they unite to fight against a horrifying creature set on destroying a small, rural community. Moving the narrative from Texas to Georgia, “Teacup” stars Yvonne Strahovski (“The Handmaid’s Tale”), Scott Speedman (“Grey’s Anatomy”), Rob Morgan (“Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty”), and Chaske Spencer (“Banshee”) and premieres on Peacock Thursday, October 10, with two episodes airing weekly through Halloween.

Bad news for fans of Dead Boy Detectives! The quirky supernatural detective series has been prematurely axed by Netflix, leaving us all wondering what could have been. According to Variety, the show, developed by Steve Yockey and based on the DC Comics characters created by Neil Gaiman and Matt Wagner, won’t be returning for a second season.
It’s a bit of a shock, considering the series only just made its debut on April 25, 2024, with a promising first season of eight episodes. But despite its initial success, the Netflix execs have decided to lay our favorite ghostly gumshoes to rest ... permanently.

Dead Boy Detectives season 2 is not happening, as Netflix has officially canceled the Sandman spinoff. Based on the characters created by Neil Gaiman and Matt Wagner, and part of the Sandman universe, the series followed Charles Rowland (Jayden Revri) and Edwin Payne (George Rexstrew), two ghosts that decide to evade Death and remain on Earth to solve mysteries. With a main cast that also included Kassius Nelson, Briana Cuoco, Jenn Lyon, Lukas Gage, Ruth Connell, and Yuyu Kitamura, there has been a lot of speculation about Dead Boy Detectives season 2.
Variety confirms that Netflix will not be moving forward with Dead Boy Detectives season 2. The cancellation comes just five months after the Sandman spinoff show first premiered on the streaming platform, where it scored rave reviews and started off with strong ratings, though gradually dropped over its first month of release. If you thought 2023 was a good year for Netflix shows, 2024 just might have last year beat. The year has already provided new hits like Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Gentlemen, Baby Reindeer, and Emily in Paris, but there are plenty more highly anticipated shows on the horizon. New seasons of Outer Banks, Squid Game, The Diplomat, and more are still to come in 2024.
Although the Hollywood strikes left multiple Netflix shows delayed until 2025, the streamer has confirmed plenty more shows premiering or returning with new shows in 2024. Now that we're heading into the last few months of the year, we're starting to see some big hits coming back to our watch lists and splashy new shows making their debuts.
While fans will surely be anxiously awaiting Ginny & Georgia season 3, Wednesday season 2, The Watcher season 2, You season 5, and more, there's still so much to look forward to in 2024. For now,...

The Netflix model is beyond my comprehension. They make a lot of good shows that don’t get renewed. They make a lot of bad stuff that gets renewed. And they release a bunch of big-budget, middling shows and then forget to market them. If we talk about this year alone, Netflix released 3 Body Problem and Supacell, both of which weren’t all that good, and they have got the greenlight for multiple seasons. Two of the best action dramas of the year, The Brothers Sun and House of Ninjas, have probably been canceled. I don’t know if anybody even knows that amazing shows like Nightmares and Daydreams, Tribhuvan Mishra CA Topper, and Tokyo Swindlers exist on the streaming platform. But the horribly made Heeramandi and Maamla Legal Hai had the viewership that’s necessary to get the thumbs up. I don’t even want to get into the animated stuff.

Netflix has given a greenlight to “Famous Last Words,” a unique documentary series format that features the final major interview from cultural icons. Those subjects secretly film their conversations, which remain untouched and unseen — until they are aired posthumously.
Emmy winner Brad Falchuk will produce the show via his Teley-Vision banner, which has a multi-year deal with Netflix. Banijay Entertainment’s Bsna is also behind the show, along with the John F. Real-life mafia expert Jimmy Tsui praises Netflix's The Brothers Sun for its realism. Tsui explains the hierarchical structure of Triad societies, with White Paper Fan being the highest level for women. The Netflix show receives a 7/10 rating for its accuracy, with Tsui highlighting the secret leader meeting scene as particularly authentic.
A real-life mafia expert gives a positive review of the Netflix crime drama The Brothers Sun. Consisting of eight episodes, and making its Netflix premiere in January, the project hailed from American Horror Story co-creator Brad Falchuk and writer Bryon Wu and told the story of a family that bands together when a factional war breaks out. Despite positive reviews and seemingly strong viewership, The Brothers Sun season 2 is not in the cards as Netflix cancelled the show in March.

Mother, Couch is the type of movie with a jaw-dropping cast that you keep hoping and praying gets better but never turns that corner. And that’s saying something for a film that mercifully ends around the 90-minute mark. The film has worthy performances, particularly from its star, Ewan McGregor, who does what he can to elevate the material.
However, Mother, Couch is more interested in its existential mood than in what will draw the audience in. The story is not engaging or interesting, and, for that matter, entertaining is the story. That’s the one thing about some first-time directors—they forget their audience.

When TV academy voters sit down to fill out their 2024 Emmy nominations ballots, they have to consider 73 shows for Best Comedy Series; this is down by 22 contenders from last year. As was the case last year, each member’s selections may not exceed the number of eventual nominations in a given category, which will be eight in this case.
On its quest for a second consecutive victory here, “The Bear” will have to fend off just two of its seven 2023 rivals: “Abbott Elementary” and “Only Murders in the Building.” Last year’s remaining contenders that did not air episodes during the June 1, 2023 to May 31, 2024 eligibility period are “Barry,” “Jury Duty,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “Ted Lasso,” and “Wednesday,” the last of which is the only one known to have a new season in the works.
Remember, only eight of the shows listed below will earn bids for Best Comedy Series...
