Hong Kong’s Pccw Media and Sk Global, the company behind Crazy Rich Asians and Delhi Crime, have teamed up for the big-budget Hong Kong-set drama series The Season.

The show is created and executive produced by writer and producer Yalun Tu, known for his work on NCIS: Hawaii and Wu Assassins. Chilean filmmaker Marialy Rivas (The Jetty) serves as lead director and executive producer.

The series has a buzzy, White Lotus-like premise set amidst Hong Kong high society.

The official logline reads: “Set against the opulence and striking contrasts of Hong Kong, The Season follows a privileged group of friends gathering for a summer of sun-drenched luxury as boating season begins. What starts as a glamorous escape soon spirals into a web of deception, power struggles, and life-altering consequences.”

Hong Kong’s Pccw Media is linking up with independent film and TV studio Sk Global Entertainment (“Crazy Rich Asians”) to produce the drama series, “The Season.”

The six-part series is set in Hong Kong and tells of a group of friends gathering for a summer of fun in the sun as boating season begins but which spirals into a web of deception and power struggles. The show was unveiled at a special presentation at Hong Kong FilMart.

“We believe “The Season” is a story that will connect with audiences everywhere through the characters’ personal journeys, relationships and conflicts at times,” said Janice Lee, managing director of Pccw Media Group and CEO of Viu, the company’s multi-territory video streamer.

The novel tested theories about assimilation and the color line. If everyone was of the same race, racism and its attendant violence would be eliminated, right?

I couldn’t stop thinking of Schuyler’s novel while watching Amy Wang’s assured directorial debut Slanted. The film, which premiered at SXSW and won the narrative feature competition, has a similar premise. It follows Joan Huang (Shirley Chen of Sundance darling Didi), a Chinese-American teenager desperate to be prom queen. She lives in a kind of Anywhere, U.S.A., a surrealist version of Main Street cleverly conjured by Wang and her production designer Ying-Te Julie Chen.

Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson’s upcoming Apple TV+ comedy series “Brothers” has added five new cast members.

Oona Yaffe (“Sleepy Hollow”), Highdee Kuan, Nolan Almeida, Ella Grace Helton, and Noah Carganilla are now set to appear in the series. Along with McConaughey and Harrelson, the cast also includes Holland Taylor, Natalie Martinez and Brittany Ishibashi.

The 10-episode “Brothers” was originally announced in 2023. The official logline states, “Matthew and Woody’s friendship is tested when their combined families attempt to live together on Matthew’s ranch in Texas.”

Yaffe is repped by Paradigm Talent Agency and Thruline Entertainment. Kuan is repped by Buchwald, Authentic, Sloane Offer, and Shelter PR. Apple TV+’s new comedy series Brothers is rounding out its cast with five new series regulars: Oona Yaffe (Sleepy Hollow), Highdee Kuan, Nolan Almeida, Ella Grace Helton and Noah Carganilla.

Agatha All Along's Sasheer Zamata will play Suzie, Double Exposure actor Christian Vunipola will play Hussein, and Eternals stunt performer and The Brothers Sun actor Jon Xue Zhang will play Ram-Man.

Suzie and Hussein are most likely characters created for the movie (there's a good chance they will be friends of Adam on Earth), but Ram-Man should be very familiar to fans of the classic animated series and action figure line.

The live-action movie Masters of the Universe is continuing to power up as three castmembers have joined the Amazon MGM Studios project.

Based on the popular Mattel toy line, the film has started production and has added Sasheer Zamata as Suzie, Jon Xue Zhang as Ram-Man, and Christian Vunipola as Hussein. Nicholas Galitzine was previously announced to star as He-Man in director Travis Knight’s feature that is set to hit theaters exclusively on June 5, 2026.

While the streaming platform has gotten better as the years have gone by in giving shows final seasons and the chances to establish themselves with audiences, the streaming platform continues to have some of the biggest cancellation rates in the business and 2024 was no different.

In total, Netflix canceled 16 shows in 2024 while also handing six additional shows their walking papers with final season orders which are about as close to cancellations as you can get the only difference being that those lucky six shows will get to actually wrap up their runs with proper sendoffs. So when you combine the two groups, Netflix decided to end a whopping 22 shows in 2024 be it by canceling them directly or ordering final seasons.

2024 was another big year for television as new series like Shõgun, Nobody Wants This, Fallout, and The Penguin became major talking points. While those shows earned a lot of acclaim, awards recognition, and viewership, other shows that debuted in 2024 didn't get the same appreciation. Because only a loyal few were aware of their existence, they ended up getting axed after their debut season.

Additionally, other TV cancellations in 2024 were associated with shows that either premiered the previous year or ran for two or more seasons. Seeing the headlines that these series now have a short lifespan was heartbreaking for the small but mighty fanbases. Fox Entertainment Studios has tapped Hannah Pillemer and Allison Wallach to lead its scripted entertainment and unscripted entertainment divisions, respectively.

Company co-ceo Ted Sarandos harangued other streaming executives this week for not being more transparent, and Netflix followed up his words by following through with another data dump regarding how much viewership it received in the first half of 2024. British TV was the biggest genre of the year for the streamer, with titles like “Bridgerton,” “Fool Me Once” and the controversy-generating “Baby Reindeer” compiling tens of millions of views.

Bad news for fans of Dead Boy Detectives! The quirky supernatural detective series has been prematurely axed by Netflix, leaving us all wondering what could have been. The Netflix model is beyond my comprehension. They make a lot of good shows that don’t get renewed. They make a lot of bad stuff that gets renewed. And they release a bunch of big-budget, middling shows and then forget to market them. If we talk about this year alone, Netflix released 3 Body Problem and Supacell, both of which weren’t all that good, and they have got the greenlight for multiple seasons. Two of the best action dramas of the year, The Brothers Sun and House of Ninjas, have probably been canceled. I don’t know if anybody even knows that amazing shows like Nightmares and Daydreams, Tribhuvan Mishra CA Topper, and Tokyo Swindlers exist on the streaming platform. But the horribly made Heeramandi and Maamla Legal Hai had the viewership that’s necessary to get the thumbs up. I don’t even want to get into the animated stuff.

Netflix has given a greenlight to “Famous Last Words,” a unique documentary series format that features the final major interview from cultural icons. Those subjects secretly film their conversations, which remain untouched and unseen — until they are aired posthumously.

Emmy winner Brad Falchuk will produce the show via his Teley-Vision banner, which has a multi-year deal with Netflix. Banijay Entertainment’s Bsna is also behind the show, along with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts — where the interviews will be preserved and housed in its library.

Falchuk and Mikkel Bondesen will executive produce with David Goldberg and showrunner David Friedman.

Mother, Couch is the type of movie with a jaw-dropping cast that you keep hoping and praying gets better but never turns that corner. And that’s saying something for a film that mercifully ends around the 90-minute mark. The film has worthy performances, particularly from its star, Ewan McGregor, who does what he can to elevate the material.

As was the case last year, each member’s selections may not exceed the number of eventual nominations in a given category, which will be eight in this case.

On its quest for a second consecutive victory here, “The Bear” will have to fend off just two of its seven 2023 rivals: “Abbott Elementary” and “Only Murders in the Building.” Last year’s remaining contenders that did not air episodes during the June 1, 2023 to May 31, 2024 eligibility period are “Barry,” “Jury Duty,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “Ted Lasso,” and “Wednesday,” the last of which is the only one known to have a new season in the works.
