Not much is known about Scream 7 yet, and perhaps that's a good thing. Scream is a beloved horror comedy franchise built on satire, gore, and surprise slasher reveals at the end. So, part of the fun is having no clue what's happening before the movie starts, but sometimes the biggest teasers come with the cast list. It's no secret that the casting decisions for the Scream franchise have been messy in the past. The first issues arose with the franchise's original star, Neve Campbell, as she dropped out of 2023's Scream VI on less-than-happy terms over a payment dispute she deemed disrespectful.

The story went in a different direction, focusing entirely on Sam and Tara Carpenter, introduced in 2022's Scream. But, then, of course, near the end of November 2023, Scream 7's production company, Spyglass, fired Sam's actor, Melissa Barrera, and subsequently lost Tara's actor, Jenna Ortega, and its director,...

In 2022, Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media revived the Scream franchise with a new entry (the fifth) that was a box office hit, earning almost $139 million at the global box office. Fourteen months later, Scream VI came along – and became an even bigger hit, pulling in almost $169 million at the global box office, a number that was up there with the series’ heyday, when the first Scream and Scream 2 made just over $170 million. (Scream 3 also made over $160 million – only Scream 4 failed to crack $100 million.) So, of course, the companies are moving full steam ahead with Scream 7. While the movie seemed, initially, to be on the fast-track to success, the track it’s on has turned out to be a shockingly bumpy ride.

Jenna Ortega, who plays the morbid, death-obsessed student in Wednesday, teased there will be more ghoulish occurrences in the supernatural high school series in a recent interview with Collider.

“Visually, I can say we have some of the most fun we’ve ever had,” Ortega told Collider. “It’s crazy to talk about one frame like this, but there is a frame of Pugsley rolling his eyes back with this contraption around his head — that’s all I can say — and it reminds me so much of Full Metal Jacket.

Scream 7 started filming at the start of January, and we’ve seen some surprising reports about the slasher sequel as it has made its way through production – with the most surprising and strange news being that Matthew Lillard and Scott Foley, who played Ghostface killers who were killed off in Scream (1996) and Scream 3, respectively, and David Arquette, whose beloved character Dewey lost his life in Scream (2022), are all in the cast. During an appearance on Good Morning America, Foley admitted that, like many Scream fans, he isn’t sure how his return actually works.

All the film titles over the course of this last weekend (Mar. 14-16), which played in theaters, only managed to make a grand total of $50.3 million. That figure is even worse than the $53.9 million posted over Super Bowl Lix weekend (Feb. 7-9) and the total ($53.65 million) garnered by the previous record holder for the worst weekend of 2025 (Feb. 28-Mar.2). Sadly, when the actual numbers are revealed on Monday, Mar. 17, the figure won’t fluctuate enough to avoid taking home the dubious honor.

Screenwriter Jimmy Warden won raves for Cocaine Bear, a wild romp that flipped traditional comedy horror tropes. The screenwriter hopes to ride similar creative highs in his directorial debut, Borderline, a twisted dark comedy thriller that gets lost in its own zany maze. Still, Warden stays committed to the distinctly unique “out there” vibe of his new film, which stars Samara Weaving (Scream VI), Ray Nicholson (Smile 2), Eric Dane (Grey’s Anatomy), Jimmie Fails (Nickel Boys), and Alba Baptista (Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris).

The plot tracks a creepy and persistent stalker named Paul (Nicholson), who invades the home of 1990s pop superstar (Weaving) with delusions of marrying her, grand wedding and all. Toss in a stressed bodyguard (Dane), another deluded fan, and a gaggle of wedding guests forced to attend Paul’s "ceremony," and we have a fine set-up for this edgy comedy. But something is out of sync creatively here.

Ghostface will have his/her choice of characters to question about their favorite scary movies when Scream 7 finally hits theaters in February 2026. Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott and Courteney Cox’s Gale Weathers are the only two living survivors from director Wes Craven’s 1996 film returning. However, Woodsboro’s masked serial killer will come up against plenty of new blood, too, including the film's newest addition, Landman and 1923’sfan-favorite star, Michelle Randolph.

It’s unclear who Randolph will portray in the latest Scream installment, but she will be rubbing elbows with some of the horror franchise’s crème de la crème. The cast of the upcoming horror sequel Scream 7 continues to grow. Now, another two names have been revealed as franchise newcomers for the movie.

Per Deadline, it's been announced that Scream 7 has recruited Michelle Randolph (Landman) and Jimmy Tatro (The Real Bros of Simi Valley). Details about their roles have not been disclosed, but either one could potentially be playing the next person to be unmasked as a Ghostface killer, given how that changes with each installment. They could also just as easily be playing two more victims of the Ghostface killer. In any case, all fans can do at this time is speculate with no additional information known about the roles.

Randolph is best known for her breakout role in Landman, the Paramount+ series in which she plays the daughter of Billy Bob Thornton's character. She also has a role in the Yellowstone prequel series 1923. Scream 7...

We assumed Kelsey Grammar would be staying on as the McU's Hank McCoy after his post-credits scene cameo in The Marvels, but it seems Marvel Studios is planning to cast a new actor as Beast in the upcoming X-Men reboot.

According to The Hot Mic's Jeff Sneider, Jesse Plemons is in consideration to play Beast in the movie. We're not sure if he's actually met with Marvel about the role or is simply a person of interest, but we can see quite a lot of fans getting behind this particular rumor.

Plemons is just the latest actor to be mentioned in connection with one of the main mutant roles in the film. Harris Dickinson and Jack Champion are reportedly being eyed to play Cyclops, with Stranger Things alum Sadie Sink a likely pick for Jean Grey. We've also heard that The Bear's Ayo Edebiri and DeWanda Wise are on the studio's radar to play Storm.

Deadline reports that the actress is set to re-team with Radio Silence duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who directed Newton previously in last year's vampire horror film Abigail. Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett also directed Ready or Not and other popular recent horror movies like Scream 5 and Scream 6.

Released in 2019, the first Ready or Not was an absolute blast of a movie. It did very well at the box office, grossing over $57.6 million on a $6 million budget and it was heavily praised by critics and audiences alike. Ready or Not helped catapult Weaving into the realm of modern-day scream queens and she's appeared in several since (including getting the coveted opening kill in Scream 6). Next she'll star in the comedy thriller Borderline with Ray Nicholson.

Since 1996, the Scream series has transformed slasher horror movies through its witty meta-commentary methods and creative storytelling techniques. All Scream films developed some new elements that began with Wes Craven’s 1996 origin story.

Arquette isn’t the only actor from Scream past to make a surprise reappearance in the sequel. Conventional wisdom suggests that studios should not open their newest movies or tentpoles on Oscars weekend. Wouldn’t you rather wait until the weekend after the industry has finished celebrating the year’s best movies before promoting a new one?

But historically, that hasn’t necessarily been the case, especially when compared to something like Super Bowl weekend. So, with studios largely avoiding major new releases, this weekend had the unfortunate effect of being the lowest weekend at the overall domestic box office during the Oscars in at least 15 years.

It has been established in the Scream franchise that heroine Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) is married to a man named Mark, who viewers will be introduced to in the currently-filming Scream 7. Most fans assumed that her husband was Mark Kincaid, a character she met in Scream 3, where he was played by Patrick Dempsey. But Scream 7 has been filming since the start of January, and Dempsey is not in the movie. Instead, this film will reveal that Sidney’s husband is Mark Evans, played by Joel McHale (Community). Now, Dempsey has confirmed to Variety that he was in talks to reprise the role of Mark Kincaid in the new Scream sequel, but the scheduling didn’t work out.

As franchise fans will recall, the two were very much a thing in Scream 3, and when we learned in Scream 5 that Sydney was married to Mark... all the pieces seemed to connect, and fans were excited about the continuation of Sydney and Mark's love story. Fast-forward to January 2025: we learned that Joel McHale would join the franchise as Sydney's husband, Mark Evans.

While initial reports indicated that Dempsey was in talks to return to Scream 7, negotiations ultimately failed. Dempsey has now confirmed the reason: scheduling conflicts brought on by the catastrophic California wildfires. Speaking with Variety, Dempsey revealed:

Overall domestic revenue is estimated to come in between $56 million and $57 million, the lowest by a long shot in at least a decade, according to ComScore. This excludes the year the awards show was delayed to early April because of the pandemic and as theaters were still struggling to come back online. Over Oscar weekend in 2021, combined revenue hit $57.2 million over the April 4-6 frame.

Netflix’s hit series The Night Agent remains at the top of the Nielsen streaming charts for the second week in a row. The show had 2.92 billion minutes of viewing from January 27 to February 2, 2025. This is only a small drop of 6% from its debut week.

Apple TV+’s Severance is also doing well. The series ranked fourth among original streaming shows with 557 million minutes of viewing. While this is slightly lower than its first two weeks (589 million and 622 million minutes), Severance is now Apple TV+’s most-watched show since Ted Lasso in 2023.

Last year Oscar weekend had Universal/DreamWorks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda 4 opening to $57.9M, while 2023 had Paramount/Spyglass’ Scream VI opening to a franchise domestic record of $44.4M, while 2022 (when the ceremony fell on a March 27) saw the return of the rom com with Paramount’s Sandra Bullock-Channing Tatum movie Lost City posting a $30.4M start.

At a time when we want people to return to movie theaters, while also watching the Oscars, having a solid No. 1 opening assists in propping and highlighting the motion picture industry.

But not this year.

Official updates on Marvel's plans for the X-Men have been few and far between since Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox, and rumor has it that this is simply down to the studio playing the waiting game.

‘Scream 7’ is one of the most highly awaited upcoming horrors. The movie had a difficult production so far. The movie was reworked after directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett left in August 2023, followed by the departure of stars Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega in November.

Neve Campbell confirmed her return to the franchise in March 2024 after missing ‘Scream VI.’ Kevin Williamson, a writer and producer from the early ‘Scream’ films, was brought on as director.

The plot is still a secret, but Neve Campbell revealed the new movie will focus on Sidney and her family, shifting back from the Carpenter sisters seen in ‘Scream’ released in 2022 and ‘Scream 6’ released in 2023.
