For a while, Apple TV+’s adaptation of Dennis Tafoya’s Dope Thief fits into one of my favorite subgenres of crime fiction: Longtime friends, bonded by shared trauma, engage in petty crime to survive, only to find themselves caught up in something bigger and more dangerous than they could have imagined.
Never quite a buddy comedy, but definitely a morbidly funny thriller fueled by economic desperation, Dope Thief gets off to an extremely promising start.
Stars Brian Tyree Henry and Wagner Moura have the instant and volatile chemistry of men who have weathered so many dark moments together that they love each other even when they hate each other. Series creator Peter Craig has a good grasp on the obscenity-filled, vernacular-peppered language of this world. Pilot director Ridley Scott grounds the story in the urban grit of its Philadelphia and Philadelphia-adjacent locations.

Mafia movies are known for their raw depiction of an underworld of crime and corruption and everything that stems from those. Some are simply better than others, although when it comes to the mafia genre, it doesn't get any better thanThe Godfather. Francis Ford Coppola's film portrayed the mob as a criminal organization with all sorts of characters loosely based on real-life people. But as grounded as the film was, you don't exactly think of "realism" when you see it. Thankfully, real-life former mobster Anthony Ruggiano Jr. has some insight into what's real and what's not in The Godfather.
The 1972 epic crime drama revolutionized the industry with a deeply compelling story about Vito and Michael Corleone, a father and son who face their true nature as they commit the ultimate betrayal of their family. Widely considered one of the best movies ever made, The Godfather was a remarkable game-changer...

Nightbitch's cast extends boasts some impressive talent opposite Amy Adams' commanding performance. Nightbitch is a black comedy riff on a classic creature feature, combining the themes of films like An American Werewolf in London with an exploration of motherhood. The film centers around Amy Adams' nameless Mother, who finds herself increasingly frustrated by her domestic life as a mother and wife above all else. Mother finds new freedom in the evenings however, especially as she steadily seems to begin transforming into a dog.
Although the overall film received mixed reviews from critics, Amy Adams' Nightbitch has become a streaming success on Hulu. While the film is anchored by Amy Adams' impressive central performance, the movie also features a strong supporting cast who bring out different shades of the lead character. The stars of Nightbitch range from veterans of the silver screen to modern character actors, all in service of...

Sean “Diddy” Combs appeared in court on Wednesday for a hearing in his federal sex trafficking case.
And according to witnesses in the courtroom, the disgraced music mogul’s months behind bars have taken an obvious toll.
Courtroom sources say Diddy attempted to put on a brave face, greeting his children and offering holiday wishes to the assembled reporters.

Brad Pitt played a hitman in Andrew Dominik's Killing Them Softly, a film that revolves around a mob poker game that went wrong. Similar to John Wick, Pitt's character's job is to take care of those who need to be taken care of; but unlike Wick, Pitt's Jackie has his own way of carrying out a hit. He prefers to handle violence with a gentle hand, relatively speaking. In many ways, Jackie resembles Keanu Reeves' Baba Yaga, whose presence automatically delivers a chilling note.
While the two both use a gun, Jackie has a similar mentality to Mads Mikkelsen's Dr. Hannibal Lecter. He likes to toy with his prey and makes sure that they won't see where the bullets are coming from. Jackie also has a signature overkill. However, while John Wick is a successful mob film with excellent world-building and character development beyond Reeves' star power,...

Angelina Jolie was hurt because Brad Pitt worked with Harvey Weinstein (Photo Credit – Wikimedia/Facebook)
“It was hard for me when Brad did,” said Angelina Jolie, and yeah, we get it. That moment when her ex-husband, Brad Pitt, chose to work with Harvey Weinstein—after she’d already made it clear how much of a predator he was—still stings. You’d think he’d know better.
Jolie opened up in a The Guardian interview, spilling the details of her traumatic run-in with Weinstein when she was just 21, on the set of Playing By Heart in 1998. She was young, trying to make her mark in Hollywood, but Weinstein’s advances crossed a line. “The attempt and the experience of the attempt is an assault,” she said. And yet, she survived it, but the scars were deep. Jolie didn’t just walk away from Weinstein—she bolted, warned everyone in her circle,...

James Gandolfini will always be best remembered for playing the iconic anti-hero Tony Soprano on The Sopranos, as the groundbreaking HBO crime drama is still hailed as one of the greatest dramatic television shows ever made. Tony was a character who shaped the way that modern television anti-heroes were depicted, but it was hardly the first time that Gandolfini took on a role in a gritty crime project; his other memorable roles included Get Shorty, The Drop, Killing Them Softly, and The Man Who Wasnt There, among others. However, Gandolfinis performance in the Tony Scott film True Romance is the scariest of his career, and somehow managed to get even more intense than The Sopranos.

When James Gandolfini ended his star-making turn as Tony Soprano in HBO's The Sopranos in 2007, it freed him up to pursue a film career that would allow the gifted actor to showcase many talents. He would go on to play characters that were nothing like the intimidating mafioso, but his role as Mickey in Killing Them Softly is as close as he would come to replicating the Emmy award-winning role.

If there’s one thing Angelina Jolie is known for, it’s her fierce determination. With a bold personality, she’s always made it clear she knows what she wants, and that didn’t change when she crossed paths with Harvey Weinstein.

The actress even had a fight with her ex-husband Brad Pitt when she saw him working on projects that had Weinstein’s name attached. To this day, she’s still very outspoken about her feelings toward the convicted s*x offender.

Insiders say no one is more disgusted by the news of Diddy’s alleged crimes than the rapper’s former friend and protege Justin Bieber.
Bieber was just 15 when he first made Diddy’s acquaintance.
And those who know the pop icon best say he would have kept his distance if he’d had any inkling of the sort of activity that was taking place at the now-infamous “Diddy parties.”

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been such a coveted hub of entertainment that it’s either the place where everyone is or everyone wants to be. The popularity of the franchise comes with its own perks, as you get access to unlimited resources, and people from every country that has an accessible film theater become familiar with your work. But it has its downsides because the franchise works like a conveyor belt and every project has a stupid deadline that stifles creativity. And since a lot of directors are in there, sometimes for very long periods of time, it’s interesting to see how the process of making a Marvel project has affected their vision and whether that change is palpable in their post-mcu career. Jon Favreau made the amazing Chef and then went right into the conveyor belt with Disney remakes and Star Wars’ Mandalorian IP. James Gunn made the fantastic The Suicide Squad.

Sometimes you think you have a good read on someone, and then you proceed to regret ever having thought that way in the first place. "Why did I even consider this person to be decent?" Or vice versa they were good all along; how dare I have thought anything different? But many of us are just too darn polite to speak up when we're stuck in a social situation that is simply choking us on a mental and psychological level. Why do we endure it? "Because you let us," says one remarkable character from Blumhouse's latest offering. If Speak No Evil sounds familiar, that's because it is to loyal horror fans, at least.

Since its release in 2012, Killing Them Softly has often gone overlooked as a great mob crime movie. While it earned a critics' score of 74% on Rotten Tomatoes, the film grossed just under $40 million and seemed to largely go under the radar. Killing Them Softly stars Brad Pitt as hitman Jackie Cogan, who's hired by mob boss Driver (Richard Jenkins) to find and kill the guys who robbed his private poker game, stealing about one hundred thousand dollars. At surface level, this is just your typical crime movie, where a gun-for-hire needs to kill some targets.
But there's actually a much deeper theme at the core of this film. Killing Them Softly depicts the death of the American Dream, this make-believe notion that here in America, anyone can find a better life -- and here's how the movie captures that.

Ray Liotta's final film, 1992, is dividing critics but impressing audiences. The heist drama, set in L.A. following the Rodney King verdict, was not the last film Liotta worked on, but it is the last of his projects to be released. 1992 landed in select theaters on August 30th. The film follows a shopkeeper who must save his son from an angry mob during the 1992 L.A. uprising after the Rodney King verdict and centers around two families.
The film currently holds a 68% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with its audience score sitting much higher at 92%. While its score still lands the film in the fresh category, there is a significant difference between the two. So why the disparity? Critics' opinions of the film range from love for its cast to criticism of a generic plot and the fact that, despite being set during the L.A. riots, those events "take place in the backdrop.

The moment you see a recognizable face like Scoot McNairy's, your cinephile radar lights up. "Oh yeah! That guy! Love him," you might find yourself saying. McNairy is everywhere these days, often in standout supporting performances. You've seen him on both the big and small screen, in commercial projects and smaller efforts: Love Life on Max, A Quiet Place Part II, Killing Them Softly. He even voices King Lizard on Prime Video's beloved animated series Invincible.
He usually shines in the supporting cast, but when he's allowed to lead (as in the brilliant improv sci-fi film Monsters and the AMC series Halt and Catch Fire), he's electric. McNairy holds the screen well in the new film, Blood for Dust, alongside other acclaimed performers like Kit Harington, Josh Lucas, and Stephen Dorff. Harvey Weinstein is currently serving a twenty-three-year sentence in prison for r-pe and s-xual assault. Of course, this might not have been possible without the many prominent actresses who built up the courage to talk about the heinous acts of the disgraced producer, Angelina Jolie included.
Harvey Weinstein on The Graham Norton Show
After Harvey Weinstein tried to make unwanted and inappropriate advances against Angelina Jolie when she was just 21, the actress swore that she would never work with him ever again. She stayed true to the promise she made herself, but when her then-partner Brad Pitt wouldn’t do the same, she got absolutely furious, rightly so.

Matt Reeves’ The Batman and Denis Villeneuve’s Dunes: Part One share a unique but fascinating connection: their cinematography. Both films, despite being modern releases, boast a visual style reminiscent of the 1970s. This unique appearance was achieved by meticulous design.
Robert Pattinson as Batman
Reeves and his cinematographer Greg Fraser took a unique approach to capturing the visual elements of The Batman. Taking inspiration from gritty 1970s thrillers like Clute and All the President’s Men, they’ve deliberately opted for classic anamorphic lenses.
SUGGESTEDDune: Part One Cashes in $30M at the Box Office Despite Being Available For Free on Streaming, Raises Hype For Sequel
And, the same technique, that combines the power of digital filmmaking with the classic charm of making a movie. was also used in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part One, where the cinematographer was Greig Fraser again.
How Does The Batman and Dune: Part One Share a Visual Secret?...

Jonathan Glazer’s return to filmmaking was highly anticipated. His first two films Sexy Beast and Birth were widely acclaimed, but it took nearly a decade for Glazer to complete another project. He developed Under the Skin for almost a decade before debuting it at the Telluride Film Festival in 2013. Under the Skin was widely celebrated by film critics and ardent science fiction fans, but general audiences seemed to be baffled by the surrealist body horror story. It’s hardly the first time that a brilliant, challenging arthouse film was met with contempt from general audiences, with films like Killing Them Softly, Solaris, The Box, and mother! having earned F Cinemascores. With all that being said, Under the Skin can be a difficult text to decipher after only one viewing. It may take subsequent rewatches to fully comprehend the metaphorical, psychological, and literal implications of Under the Skin's alien encounter story.

Oscar-winning cinematographer Greig Fraser was “devastated” when Warner Bros. announced that “Dune: Part Two” was shifting its release date from Nov. 2023 to March 2024.
“I was really ready to start talking about it,” he tells Variety. However, the move means he can focus his attention on his other film, Gareth Edwards’ $80 million visual spectacular “The Creator.”
Fraser shared co-cinematographer duties with Oren Soffer on the film, taking an experimental approach to shooting futuristic landscapes. The production aimed to create the grandness and visual scale of a huge blockbuster film, but on a more modest budget. And he achieved it.
“Gareth and wanted to maximize everyone’s toil on this,” Fraser shares. “So, when we put two actors in a room together with a camera, we looked at how many people we really needed standing outside.”
Next, the pair spent extensive time ahead of production figuring out the infrastructure of the shoot.

Alix West Lefler has joined James McAvoy, Mackenzie Davis, and Scoot McNairy for Blumhouse's Speak No Evil, a remake of Christian Tafdrup's Danish psychological horror thriller Gæsterne. James Watkins, who directed the horror films The Woman in Black and Eden Lake (which he also wrote), serves as director and writer for Speak No Evil. The original film director Tafdrup serves as an executive producer for the remake, alongside Paul Ritchie, Jacob Jarek, and Bea Sequeira. The film is produced by Blumhouse's Jason Blum.
The original film, a social satire, premiered in the Midnight section during the 38th Sundance Film Festival in 2022. Gæsterne (which translates to The Guests but is titled Speak No Evil in English) follows a Danish couple, Bjørn and Louise, and their daughter Agnes. While vacationing in Tuscany the three meet a Dutch couple, Patrick and Karin, and their son Abel, who is unable to speak. After...

The new horror film, birth/rebirth, directed by Laura Moss, received acclaim when it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier in the year, and now audiences will get to see the disturbing horror that's been a hit with critics. The film explores the darker sides of child-rearing with a twisted and queasily clinical approach. Marin Ireland plays a pathologist named Rose, who becomes obsessed with using science to bring a dead child back to life. The film explores the themes of birth, death, and the way beyond. The Hollywood Reporter writes that birth/rebirth is not for the faint of heart and takes cues from classic horror films such as Stuart Gordon's Re-Animator, Dracula, and Frankenstein in its grisly portrayal of two women who resurrect a little girl's corpse in the name of science and love. Check out the trailer below:

Andrew Dominik created one of the most controversial films in recent memory with the Marilyn Monroe biopic Blonde, which was based on the divisive novel of the same name by Joyce Carol Oates. While Blonde is intended to be a fictionalized version of real events, many viewers did not take kindly to the graphic depiction of sexual assault and the Nc-17 rating. While Ana de Armas’ performance was highly acclaimed and even honored with an Academy Award nomination, the film itself has been ridiculed. It recently took home the Razzie awards for Worst Picture and Worst Screenplay at the 2023 ceremony.
It should be noted that Blonde was not completely met with negative reactions, as Colin Farrell recently praised it, and initial reviews out of the Venice International Film Festival were much kinder than those that ran once the film was available on Netflix. The technology of cinematography has undergone some of the most seismic shifts in film history this century, with what began in the 2000s as an almost entirely photochemical process transforming into the digitally captured, manipulated, and projected images of today. The art of cinematography, however — using light, color, and texture to express ideas and elicit emotional reactions from the audience — remains intact.

In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we look at Duran Duran's Do You Believe in Shame?, directed by Chen Kaige. Chen Kaige is a director mostly known for stagey and stately melodramatic period pieces, like Farewell My Concubine, which won him the Palme D'Or in Cannes. Often his films are set in his native China, exploring themes of family and love in lush settings. Later, more spectacular films like The Promise and Battle of Lake Changjin 1 and 2 infuse his style with more action. One thing Chen Kaige isn't associated with is American films, probably because of the humongous flop of his erotic thriller Killing Them Softly; or a modern day...

It's a tall order to make a film that features high-caliber on-screen mafia greats like James Gandolfini and Ray Liotta, let alone a film that sees them star together. However, director Andrew Dominik was able to achieve such a feat. Sadly, both actors have since passed, but not before they accompanied Brad Pitt for a modern-day mob epic titled Killing Them Softly. Released in 2012, and foolishly categorized as a flop by some, the time has come to dust off the moronic critic drivel and see this gangster gem through a new lens. The film was based on George V. Higgins' national bestseller Cogan's Trade (1974), and the spirit of his work is ultimately captured by Dominik.

Blonde has a riveting central performance from Ana de Armas, but reviews of the movie as a whole have been incredibly mixed. Andrew Dominik is an esteemed filmmaker known for his crime dramas Chopper, which launched the career of Eric Bana, and the Palme d'Or contender Killing Them Softly, as well as the highly acclaimed Western The Assassination of Jesse James by The Coward Robert Ford. However, despite a 14-minute standing ovation at its premiere at the Venice International Film Festival, his movie Blonde has received divisive reviews from critics.

Starring alongside Jerry Seinfeld, Ray Liotta played a small but crucial role in the oft-memed animated cult classic Bee Movie. Liotta is a legend of the silver screen, who first rose to prominence with his role in Something Wild and went on to play such iconic characters as Henry Hill in Goodfellas and Shoeless Joe Jackson in Field of Dreams. Liotta appeared in a wide range of projects, from bleak, brutal, ultraviolent thrillers, like Killing Them Softly, to lighthearted family-friendly comedies like, Muppets Most Wanted. Sadly, Liotta passed away in 2022 while filming Dangerous Waters, but he left behind a huge fan base and an impressive body of work.

Thanks to the whims of the movie gods, production company Plan B Entertainment has seen its three high-profile Oscar contenders debut nearly simultaneously: “Women Talking” (UA via MGM), “Blonde” (Netflix) and “She Said” (Universal).
Dede Gardner — one of the three Plan B partners, along with Jeremy Kleiner and Brad Pitt — tells Variety: “I didn’t think it would happen this way. Covid was big driver, with things backing up and then happening all at once. But I don’t think it’s a mistake. If movies are alive and kicking, they’re in a conversation with what’s happening inside culture. These three are all in the conversation, and I’m appreciative of the timing of it all.”
“Women Talking,” with Sarah Polley directing and adapting the book by Miriam Toews, is about women in a religious sect debating how to handle the physical and mental abuse on their collective.
