9-1-1 Crossover Event Seemingly Spoiled By Oliver Stark Before Season 9
Image
9-1-1's spinoff, 9-1-1: Nashville, is coming to ABC, and the network appears to already be working on a crossover between the two shows. ABC's 9-1-1 franchise is expanding with its upcoming offshoot, which, as one can deduce from its title, is set in Nashville. Given that the parent series takes place in LA, a crossover is difficult, but not impossible.

Oliver Stark, who stars as Buck in the 9-1-1 cast, shared a video of himself in Nashville ahead of the season 9 premiere. In the clip from @911Tvnews on X, Stark is going for a run on Broadway, and the text on the screen reads, "6 Nashville Miles for breakfast." All this suggests that Stark is in town to film a crossover.

Oliver Stark Justifies Why Buck Isn't Going To Be Bobby's 118 Replacement In 9-1-1 Season 9
Image
9-1-1 Buck star Oliver Stark has given his view on why Buck will not be a replacement for Bobby moving forward. Stark has played maverick firefighter Evan "Buck" Buckley on the hit ABC procedural since 2018, and his character has become a firm favorite on the show.

Following the tragic 9-1-1 death of fire station captain Bobby, Buck's mentor and father figure, there is a power vacuum that will need to be filled, and Buck would naturally be a contender for the position. And now Stark has given his views on whether Buck would be the right man for the job.

Per TV Insider, Stark confirmed that Buck's natural personality would feel at odds with the responsibility that comes with being captain. He discusses how Buck would struggle as captain not being the one who gets to do all the "cool" stuff. Stark confirms that sending Buck down the...

Anirudh Pisharody Addresses 9-1-1 The Possibility Of Ravi Officially Joining 118: "I'm Hoping It Happens"
Image
9-1-1 star Anirudh Pisharody opens up about the chances of Ravi joining the 118 on a more permanent basis. Pisharody has recurred as Ravi Panikkar since season 4, first appearing in the episode "Jinx." But he's been a more regular fixture on the first-responder procedural during season 8, filling the void created when Eddie Diaz (Ryan Guzman) moved to Texas. It's led to speculation that Ravi could be joining the 118 more permanently when the new season of 9-1-1rolls around.

In an interview with Screen Rant's Rachel Foertsch, Pisharody addressed the possibility of Ravi sticking around for season 9. The actor said that he loved the show, expressing enthusiasm about the possibility. In the quote below, Pisharody jokes about petitioning showrunner and co-creator Tim Minear to have Ravi board the show. Read the actor's quote below:

That's a good question. I should ask you that. I think it's just the nature of a show like this.

NBC's 1980s Superhero TV Show Was An Intriguing But Disappointing Sci-Fi Flop
Image
In the days before cable television got serious about creating original programming, the networks were just about the only game in town if you wanted to watch a new hour-long drama or half-hour sitcom. This meant it was on three broadcast entities to serve a diverse array of viewers with cop procedurals, family-friendly comedies, urbane farces, nighttime soaps, Westerns and science fiction. There were certain formulas that worked and got rehashed as needed, but the networks were always on the lookout for something out of the ordinary, a smarter-than-average take on one of the aforementioned genres, or, even better, a daringly innovative series that captured the public's imagination. Shows like "Soap," "St. Elsewhere" and "Twin Peaks" pulled this off with stunning élan, but when a network risk went south there was always the chance that you'd wind up with a pop cultural punchline like "My Mother, the Car," "Supertrain," or "Cop Rock.

"We Shall See What Happens": '9-1-1's Oliver Stark Hopes Fans to Interpret Buck and Eddie's Relationship How Ever They Want
Image
Let the speculation continue! During a stop at Good Morning America, 9-1-1’s Oliver Stark answered the question on everyone’s mind — well, kind of. Although his character, Buck, might still be reeling from the death of his father-figure and leader, Bobby Nash (Peter Krause), fans are interested to learn more about where the character is leaning with his long-shipped romance with best friend and co-worker, Eddie (Ryan Guzman). The blossoming of the so-called “Buddie” has been something following the series around for quite some time, so will we see steps finally taken in Season 9?

According to Stark, it’s not his decision, but he’s rooting for the fans to get what they want out of it, telling the show’s hosts,

“Fans have become super invested in these characters, in this relationship. You know, they’re best friends, Eddie is a straight character on the show, but...

‘9-1-1’ Showrunner Reveals the Original, Much Darker Ending of Last Week’s Episode
Image
Are you a 9-1-1 fan who feels personally victimized by the tragic events of last week’s episode? Will your life never be the same without Peter Krause’s Bobby Nash leading his team into the most harrowing emergency situations that one could imagine? Though you may not be entitled to compensation for your trauma, showrunner Tim Minear is here to tell you that things could have been much, much worse. Last week, after Bobby said his tearful goodbyes to fellow members of the team like Oliver Stark’s Buck and his wife, Athena (Angela Bassett), he knelt down, folded his hands, and prayed before succumbing to the deadly virus. Our final look at Bobby was of his helmet — a tear-jerking yet honorable way to say goodbye to a brave, selfless, and heroic character. However, it could have been quite a bit darker.

“What A Flex”: ’80s Sci-Fi Cult Classic Gets Moderately Positive Review From VFX Artists For One Of The First Major Uses Of CGI
Image
An '80s sci-fi cult classic movie gets moderately positive reviews from VFX artists for being one of the first movies to use CGI in a major capacity. Following the popularity of the original Star Wars movies starting in 1977, sci-fi space operas became highly popular films to showcase on the big screen. This includes everything from Star Trek's transition to the big screen in 1979, all the way through to 1999's satirical Galaxy Quest. The longevity of the genre has also been aided by its history, with popular franchises still ongoing as of writing.

However, aside from satires and previously-established franchises, there were other space opera films around the same time that became well-remembered in movie history. This includes 1979's Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, 1980's Battle Beyond the Stars, and 1984's adaptation of Dune, which was directed by David Lynch and saw Kyle MacLachlan take on the role of Paul Atreides.

Thom Christopher, ‘One Life to Live’ Actor, Dies at 84
Image
Thom Christopher, the Daytime Emmy-winning actor who portrayed the mobster Carlo Hesser and his meeker twin brother, Mortimer Bern, on the ABC soap opera One Life to Live, has died. He was 84.

Christopher died Thursday in a New York hospital after a long illness, his friend, photographer Steven Bergman, announced.

The native New Yorker also was known for his turn as the stoic, half-man, half-bird alien Hawk (think Mr. Spock on Star Trek) on the second season of the 1979-81 NBC series Buck Rogers in the 25th Century. He often shared scenes with Felix Silla’s robot Twiki.

Christopher joined One Life to Live in 1990 as the drug trafficker Carlo — he was only supposed to work one day on the daytime drama — and would seek revenge against the Buchanan family after his son Johnny (Anthony Crivello) is killed by Viki Buchanan (Erika Slezak).

Carlo was found murdered in 1992, but Christopher stuck around as Mortimer,...

Ice Age 6 Is Already Undoing The Massive Franchise Mistake Disney Made 2 Years Ago
Image
Another Ice Age movie has been confirmed by actor John Leguizamo, and the upcoming sequel is already undoing a massive franchise mistake Disney made two years ago. While speaking with NPR on their September 7 episode of the Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me! podcast, the Sid voice actor confirmed another movie in the franchise is in the works. The film would technically be Ice Age 7, due to a spinoff, The Ice Age Adventure of Buck Wild, made for Disney+ in 2022. Even so, a future addition to the Ice Age movies is a major update for the franchise.

The last mainline film, Ice Age: Collision Course, was animated by Blue Sky Studios in 2016. However, the animation studio was closed in April 2021, with the Buck Wild spinoff later produced by 20th Century Animation and Bardel Entertainment. This means Ice Age 6 will be the first direct sequel in the series not to be animated by its original studio.

Netflix Snaps Up Legal Thriller Spec ‘Hurt People’ From ‘Monarch’ Creator Melissa London Hilfers
Image
Exclusive: Netflix has locked down rights to Hurt People, a legal thriller spec from Monarch creator Melissa London Hilfers, sources tell Deadline.

Details as to the plot of the film are under wraps. Written amid last year’s writer’s strike, it marks the rising scribe’s fifth feature spec sale to date. Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter are attached to produce for Berlanti/Schechter Films.

While Hilfers most recently created Monarch, a country music drama starring Susan Sarandon and Anna Friel for Fox TV, the writer is a self-professed justice junkie who more often than not, finds her way back to stories with the law at the center, as she has here. Previously a litigator at Cravath, Swaine and Moore Llp, she burst onto the scene with Undone, a legal thriller described as Gone Girl meets Primal Fear, which sold to Parkes + MacDonald and Black Bear in a competitive situation.

Between the 1930s and 1960s, movies known as "buddy films" became prominent in cinema and eventually found their way into the Western genre with classics like Rio Bravo and Buck and the Preacher.

'9-1-1' Planned on Pairing Tommy With Eddie Before Landing on Buck
Image
9-1-1 has found a second life on ABC, but even more livening is the exploration of Buck's (Oliver Stark) sexuality that the show has teased for years. Buck brings much-needed bisexual representation to television following his budding romance with Tommy (Lou Ferrigno Jr.). A few episodes ago, 9-1-1 brought back Ferrigno Jr., who had appeared in previous seasons, to flesh out this storyline—and begin a new story arc for Stark's Buck. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Ferrigno Jr. spoke about getting acquainted more intimately with this new aspect of his character and even shared some surprising insight into what Tim Minear had initially planned.

9-1-1: Buck's Bisexuality Storyline Was a Long Time Coming
Image
Since Season 2, 9-1-1 fans have advocated for Evan "Buck" Buckley and Eddie Diaz to become a romantic couple. 9-1-1 made a significant step forward in Buck's character development by revealing he’s not straight. 9-1-1 has a new opportunity to open a new aspect of Buck's character that offers a promising storyline full of growth and acceptance.

The following contains spoilers for 9-1-1 Season 7, Episode 4, "Buck, Bothered, and Bewildered," which aired Thursday, April 4 on ABC.

Other than a great story, character ships have long been the backbone of many television shows. The slowburn romance between The X-Files' Dana Scully and Fox Mulder coined the term "shipping" and Supernatural's Dean and Castiel is one of the most popular relationships that never came to be. Those are just two ships that fans have further popularized with the help of fanfiction and social media theories. But nothing has made network...

Will ‘9-1-1’ Go There With Buck & Eddie? Oliver Stark & Tim Minear Weigh In
Image
[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for 9-1-1 Season 7 Episode 4 “Buck, Bothered and Bewildered.”] If you asked us before 9-1-1 Season 7 began if the ABC first responder drama would take the relationship between Buck (Oliver Stark) and Eddie (Ryan Guzman), which remains strictly platonic, and actually go where some fans have wanted to see it go for some time now, the answer would have seemed simple. But now the question has to be asked. Buck spends the 100th episode “bothered and bewildered,” to borrow its title, upon realizing Eddie’s spending all this free time with Tommy (Lou Ferrigno Jr.), the former 118er they just worked with to rescue Bobby (Peter Krause) and Athena (Angela Bassett). He seems hurt when Eddie talks about meeting someone and just clicking. He tries to get Eddie’s attention at work, then drags Chimney (Kenneth Choi) along to a weekly basketball game upon learning his best friend’s going with Tommy. And ...

Cph:dox Festival Abuzz With Hummingbirds
Image
The hummingbirds of Every Little Thing are migrating from North America to Europe. Sally Aikten’s film about the extraordinary avian aerialists and a Los Angeles woman who tends to injured hummingbirds is making its European premiere at Cph:dox in Copenhagen, after initially hovering over Sundance.

Larry Bird, Raisin, Cactus, Alexa and Mikhail are among the tiny ornithological wonders that appear in the film. Their human caretaker, Terry Masear, wrote the Fastest Thing on Wings: Rescuing Hummingbirds in Hollywood about the many years she has spent looking after hummingbirds – ones that may have collided with a window, say, or babies that have tumbled from their nests.

“We follow Terry over the course of the spring-summer season, which — if anyone is in L.A. — they’ll know as peak hummingbird time,” Aitken told us at Sundance. “And literally, if you have an injured or wounded hummingbird that somehow comes across your path,...

Stephen King Wanted John Candy to Star in His Hated 90's Body-Horror Adaptation
Image
Thinner, a 1996 movie adaptation of Stephen King's novel, had John Candy as King's original choice for the lead role of Billy Halleck. Candy reportedly declined the role, possibly because he didn't spark to the material, and Robert John Burke ultimately played the character. Candy's inclusion in Thinner might have tarnished his career as a comedy icon.

Stephen King adaptations have not always been as successful as in recent years, with many movies of the ‘80s and ‘90s failing to capture the horror master’s nuances on screen. For every Carrie, there has been a Maximum Overdrive, and among the list of critically panned King adaptations is Thinner, the 1996 movie based on a novel written under King’s pseudonym of Richard Bachman. In a new commentary track on Shout! Factory’s Collector’s Edition Blu-ray of the film, producer Mitchell Galin revealed that an iconic comedy star was King’s...

Mike White’s acclaimed comedy drama The White Lotus will soon commence production on season three, the cast has now been confirmed.

He then turned to television, scripting two seasons of Enlightened starring Laura Dern.

In 2021, White created what has become his most acclaimed work, The White Lotus, which has amassed a plethora of Emmys across its run so far, both for White’s writing and Jennifer Coolidge’s performance as Tanya McQuoid.

Emily Blunt and Jaume Collet-Serra will reunite for something beyond a “Jungle Cruise” sequel. Deadline reports that actress and director will work together on “Kate Warne,” an action thriller for Amazon MGM. Dawyne Johnson‘s Seven Buck banner also fronts the project, making it the third Collet-Serra film it’s backed after “Jungle Cruise” and “Black Adam.” Currently, Blunt is only on board as a producer, but she’s looking to star in the picture, too; obviously, conversations about that can’t start again until the SAG strike lifts.

Cool Runnings Star Reveals Heartbreaking Comment Made on Set by John Candy
Image
Fans of John Candy will fondly remember his performance in 1993's Cool Runnings, not realizing how much the beloved actor was struggling internally behind the scenes.

In honor of the film's 30th anniversary, director Jon Turteltaub joined the cast in sharing their memories of the classic film. That included stories about Candy, who died of a heart attack at age 43 just five months after the release of Cool Runnings. Looking back, Turteltaub noted of the late funnyman, "It’s a bit clichéd that the funny guy might not be the happy guy, but there’s a little truth to that. John was a fun, happy person, but if you got really deep, there was a lot of sadness and anger under there.”

‘9-1-1’: Oliver Stark Teases Buck’s ‘Path to Healing’ in Season 6
Oliver Stark
“It feels like the 9-1-1 of old,” Oliver Stark (firefighter Evan “Buck” Buckley) says of the “big” Season 6. The Fox first responder drama returns on September 19 with a major disaster (involving a blimp!) but that’s not all that’s coming up in the premiere. Expect a few more calls as well. And Buck 1.5 co-showrunner Kristen Reidel teased at the end of Season 5? He’s not going anywhere. Stark tells us more about where Season 6, including where it finds his character. Last we saw Buck, he made the mature decision about his relationship with Taylor (Megan West). Is he sticking to that — not doing what he’s done in the past when it comes to relationships — when the season begins? Oliver Stark: He is. I think we find Buck at the beginning of Season 6 in quite a reflective place where he is almost realizing or trying to realize and...

Uncle Buck – John Hughes Revisited
Macaulay Culkin, Gaby Hoffmann, John Candy, Elaine Bromka, Garrett M. Brown, and Jean Louisa Kelly in L'oncle Buck (1989)
Who’s in the mood for some giant panckes? 1989’s Uncle Buck is arguably John Candy’s second-best movie ever. John Hughes’ Planes, Trains, and Automobiles is probably the film he’s most remembered for, and the director/star combo worked so well they re-teamed for Uncle Buck two years later. This family comedy was the biggest hit of Candy’s career. Notably, it introduced the world to Macaulay Culkin, whose precocious performance led to Home Alone a year later. Looking back at the movie now, it’s a too-often ignored classic, with a Candy performance that mixes humor, pathos, and even a touch of menace in a way only the late, great actor could.

This month’s John Hughes Revisited is written, edited, and narrated by Matthew Hacienda.

Do you agree that Uncle Buck is Candy’s second-best movie? Let us know in the comments!

Cannes Festival Adds Two More Films to 2022 Official Selection
Image
The Cannes Film Festival has added two more films to the Official Selection of the 75th edition, which will kick off on May 17.

Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s “As Bestas,” a French-Spanish movie, has been added to Cannes Première, the new section dedicated to world premieres for movies that are slightly more mainstream, similarly to the out-of-competition strand. Sorogoyen previously earned an Oscar nomination with his 2017 short film “Madre.”

Denis Ménochet and Marina Foïs star as a middle-aged French couple moves to a local village, seeking closeness with nature and end up sparking outright hostility and shocking violence with the small community.

“Salam,” a documentary directed by Mélanie Georgiades aka Diam’s, Houda Benyamina (“The Eddy”) and Anne Cissé (“Buck”), is set to play in the Special Screenings section.

Following its April 14 presser, the festival also added three movies competition: Léonor Serraille’s “Un Petit Frere,” Albert Serra’s “Tourment sur les iles...
