Exclusive: Walden Media has promoted Julia Friley to Vice President of Scripted Development.

In her new role, Friley will create and develop commercial film and television projects with a focus on authentic characters rooted in stories of courage. Currently, she’s overseeing the development of several projects, including feature adaptations of the bestselling novels The Last Animal, Coyote Sunrise and The Sky Blues.

Most recently serving as Director of Development, Friley joined Walden Media as a creative executive in 2020. Since then, she’s also been involved in the creative development and production of projects like Apple TV+’s limited series Manhunt, Netflix’s Emmy winner The Baby-Sitters Club, and Apple TV+’s sci-fi pic Finch, starring Tom Hanks, which in 2021 brought the fledgling streamer its largest opening weekend ever.

Prior to her time at Walden, the Boston University alum worked in development at Paramount Animation, Fox Family, Columbia Pictures and Sony’s International Film Group.

Longtime Amblin Partners executive Mia Maniscalco has been tapped as president of Coin Operated, the production banner founded by horror multi-hyphenate Gary Dauberman.

Maniscalco will oversee development and production of Coin Operated’s expanding slate, working closely with Dauberman, who has been involved in some of the biggest horror franchises of the past decade, including It, Annabelle and The Nun, as writer, producer, and even director.

There’s Will Forte as Doug, a pothead who abandons his poor dog Reggie (Ferrell) in the middle of the big city in an attempt to get rid of him.

Reggie befriends a street smart stray named Bug (Foxx) and they’re eventually joined by Hunter (Randall Park) and Maggie (Isla Fisher). As the group tries to retrace Reggie’s journey back to Doug’s house, they come across some outrageous characters, including one A-list actor.

Exclusive: Briarcliff Entertainment has snapped up North American distribution rights from Concourse Media to Christian Swegal’s true crime thriller Sovereign, starring Nick Offerman, Dennis Quaid and Jacob Tremblay.

Swegal wrote and will direct later this year in Arkansas. A theatrical release during Q4 2024 is planned.

Former Epix exec Benjamin Tappan has joined Walden Media as president of production, overseeing the shingle’s TV and film development, as well as production. Tappan’s hire comes as Walden Media also looks to broaden its programming mix. Tappan will report to Walden Media president and CEO Frank Smith, who announced the hire on Tuesday.

“Ben’s vast experience as both a production executive and talent representative along with his great track record of making popular and critically praised content make him uniquely suited for leading our creative team,” Smith said in a statement. “We greatly look forward to his leadership and contributions as we build the Walden Media of the future.”

Tappan most recently served as a consultant focused on scripted development and production at his Tap/In Entertainment. He spent four years at Epix (now known as MGM+), joining in 2015 and helping launch the pay network’s first three straight-to-series productions.

Dennis Quaid has boarded Paramount+’s upcoming series “Bass Reeves,” starring David Oyelowo as the title lawman. Quaid is the first cast member to be announced opposite Oyelowo for the Taylor Sheridan-produced show.

He will play Sherrill Lynn, a deputy U.S. Marshall. The veteran actor told Fox News he was in production on the show and “making mayhem at 4 in the morning.”

Sony has revealed that 3000 Pictures’ “Where the Crawdads Sing” will open in China beginning Nov. 25, a rare booking for a Hollywood film as the nation has cut back on foreign releases.

The Reese Witherspoon-produced melodrama, about a young outcast who finds herself embroiled in a murder trial, has already earned 140.2 million worldwide. That is nearly six times its 24 million production budget in global theatrical revenue alone, so anything from China can be treated as glorified “found money.”

Based on Delia Owens’s bestselling novel, director Olivia Newman and writer Lucy Alibar’s period piece was notable last summer for being among the only mainstream theatrical releases from, for and about women. In a summer ruled by mavericks, minions, superheroes and space rangers, the Daisy Edgar-Jones vehicle opened with 17.25 million debut weekend in mid-July and legged out to 90.2 million domestic.

Streaming on HBO Max November 17 is A Christmas Story Christmas.

From Warner Bros. Pictures and HBO Max comes the long-awaited follow-up to annual holiday favorite, “A Christmas Story.” This time, Ralphie is all grown up and must deal with Christmas and all that comes with it…as a dad. Peter Billingsley returns to the role that has made kids of all ages anticipate Christmas morning like no other.

In the original 1983 film, set in the 1940s and showed annually for 24 hours on TBS & TNT, little Ralphie tries to convince his parents to get him a Red Ryder range-model Bb gun for Christmas, only to hear, “You’ll shoot your eye out, kid.” TNT began the Christmas Story marathon in 1997, and TBS took it over in 2004 when TNT shifted to drama programming.

Peter Billingsley plays Ralphie, a boy who desperately wants a Bb gun for Christmas. Melinda Dillon plays his mother and Darren McGavin his father.

Film candyman Lasse Hallström has delivered a cloying but well performed version of the life of Swedish painter Hilma af Klint

The director is all wrong. Just as you wouldn’t call on Quentin Tarantino to make a movie about Monet and his waterlilies, Lasse Hallström is a perplexing choice for a biopic about the Swedish outsider artist Hilma af Klint. Hallström is the soft-centred director of sweet-natured heart-tuggers such as Chocolat and A Dog’s Purpose. Af Klint was completely unknown when she died in 1944, and is now finally getting the recognition she deserves; Tate Modern in London is staging an exhibition of her mystical abstract canvases next year. Under Hallström’s mushy direction, her life story is simplified, sweetened and feelgood-ified.

Still, there are some cracking performances, including by the director’s daughter Tora Hallström, who plays Hilma as a free-spirited carefree young woman with fiercely present, intense blue eyes.

Kirby Howell-Baptiste will star opposite Colin Farrell in the Apple TV+ series Sugar.

Deadline revealed exclusively in December that the genre-bending series was in development with Farrell set to star and executive produce. Sugar is created by Mark Protosevich, whose feature work includes Thor and I Am Legend.

Details regarding the plot continue to be under wraps, but Deadline hears it’s an L.A.-set contemporary take on the private detective story.

Hailing from Apple Studios, Sugar is directed by Oscar nominee Fernando Meirelles, who also serves as executive producer alongside Oscar and Emmy nominee Simon Kinberg, Audrey Chon, Scott Greenberg and Chip Vucelich.

Howell-Baptiste most recently portrayed Death in The Sandman and Dr. Mae Turner in the Netflix animated series Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous. Up next, she will star in the Disney+ series Culprits alongside Eddie Izzard and Gemma Arterton.

Riverdale star Kj Apa and 1883 actress Isabel May have nabbed the alien sibling lead roles in the HBO Max live action DC comedy The Wonder Twins.

Apa will play Zan, and May will portray Jayna.

While the plotline is under wraps, Jayna is known for her talent of transforming into an animal, while Zan is a shapeshifter of sorts. The two made their debut on The All-New Super Friends Hour from Hanna-Barbera and then appeared in The World’s Greatest Super Friends, Super Friends, and Super Friends: The Legendary Super Powers Show. Their history: the duo are from the planet Exxor who were being informally trained by the DC superheroes. In a 1977 Super Friends comic book from E. Nelson Bridwell and artist Ramona Fradon, it’s further detailed that the twins were orphaned during a plague and adopted by the alien Exorians. Along the way, they’re given Gleek as a pet.

“The Blue Rose,” a new noir thriller from writer- director George Baron, has rounded out its ensemble cast.

Exclusive: Logan Miller, who starred in both Escape Room movies including most recently this summer’s Escape Room: Tournament of Champions, has signed with ICM Partners. The action horror movies have grossed more than $189 million at the global box office to date.

Miller’s other film credits include in Fox’s Love, Simon, Universal’s A Dog’s Purpose, IFC Films’ The Stanford Prison Experiment and Paramount’s Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse.

Today brings the first trailer for No Man of God. This is a new movie focused on the infamous serial killer Ted Bundy. It certainly isn't the first, and it probably won't be the last. But it is attempting to do something new. Elijah Woodis playing an FBI agent names Bill Hagmaier who ended up forming an intimate relationship with Bundy, played by Luke Kirby, in the years after he was incarcerated.

The trailer opens by making it clear that this is based on a true story. We then get into the meat and potatoes of it all, which sees Elijah Wood's Bill having conversations with Luke Kirby's Bundy. Just ahead of his scheduled execution, Bundy decides he's willing to talk. Confess to everything. But to Bill and only to Bill. It then becomes a series of very intense conversations that are making Bill question a lot about his own life.

Dennis Quaid has entered the tiger’s den and will join Peacock’s Joe Exotic (working title) as Rick Kirkham.

The limited series, based on the Wondery podcast, the Emmy-nominated actor will take on Joe’s reality show producer. He will appear opposite Tony Award winner John Cameron Mitchell who is set to star as Joe “Exotic” Schreibvogel, as previously announced. Other cast members announced to this point include Emmy winner Kate McKinnon, who plays Carole Baskin, Brian Van Holt, who plays John Reinke, Nat Wolff, who is set to portray yet another of Joe’s husbands, Travis Maldonado, and Sam Keely who will play John Finlay.

The series picks up with big cat enthusiast Carole Baskin, as she learns that fellow exotic animal lover Joe “Exotic” Schreibvogel is breeding and using his big cats for profit. She sets out to shut down his venture, inciting a quickly escalating rivalry.

Exclusive: Lionsgate has attached Riverdale and I Still Believe star Kj Apa to star in West Pointer, a drama written and to be directed by Rod Lurie. Deal was put together by Erin Westerman, President of Production for the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group.

Pic is set against the backdrop of the prestigious United States Military Academy at West Point. Apa plays a cocky plebe who graduated top of his class in high school but now must learn to navigate and compete at a storied place where every student was also the best in class.

Lurie writes from experience; he is a 1984 graduate of West Point and went on to serve for four years as a Combat Arms officer in the U.S. Army. The production will seek permission to shoot at the legendary campus.

Top Chinese director Feng Xiaogang will step in front of the camera alongside Chinese-American actor-director Joan Chen in a local adaptation of the 2009 Hollywood tearjerker “Hachi: A Dog’s Tale,” which began shooting Thursday.

It is currently set to premiere on New Year’s Eve.

Feng is best known for his work as a director on films such as “Youth,” “I Am Not Madame Bovary” and “Cellphone,” but he has also frequently taken on acting roles, with his most recent starring role in 2015’s “Mr. Six.” China-born Chen is one of the few leading ladies with a robust career on both sides of the Pacific.

Reliance Entertainment has joined hands with filmmaker Ribhu Dasgupta to form Film Hangar, a joint venture company to produce clutter-breaking content.

The first film under this banner is the highly anticipated thriller, "The Girl On The Train", an adaptation of the bestselling novel with the same name by Paula Hawkins. The film starring Parineeti Chopra is slated to release on Netflix on February 26.

Ribhu's body of work comprises "Michael" (2011) starring Naseeruddin Shah, the TV series "Yudh" (2014) starring Amitabh Bachchan, "TE3N" (2016) starring Amitabh Bachchan, Vidya Balan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui and, very recently, the web series "Bard Of Blood" (2019), which streams on Netflix.

Netflix has acquired “Blue Miracle,” the Dennis Quaid film formerly known as “On the Line.”

Based on a true story, “Blue Miracle” centers on Casa Hogar, a Mexican orphanage that was struggling to survive after Hurricane Odile hit in 2014. On the brink of bankruptcy, the residents enter the world’s biggest fishing tournament in hopes of winning the prize money to save their home.

Along with Quaid, the cast includes Raymond Cruz, Anthony Gonzalez, Jimmy Gonzales, Dana Wheeler-Nicholson, Fernanda Urrejola and Bruce McGill.

The streaming service has not set a release date yet.

Julio Quintana, whose credits include the 2016 Martin Sheen drama “The Vessel,” directed the film. He also co-wrote the script with Chris Dowling.
