"Tombstone," from 1993, is the Wyatt Earp movie most people remember from the '90s, but it's hardly the only star-studded spectacle about the legendary marshal. A year later, "Wyatt Earp" came out, reuniting actor Kevin Costner with filmmaker Lawrence Kasdan, the director who first made him a charismatic cowboy in 1985's "Silverado." A love of the old west clearly stuck with Costner, who made his directorial debut with "Dances With Wolves," an epic about a Union Army Lieutenant (Costner) who goes native. If you haven't seen it, you've probably at least heard the plot of "Avatar" compared (unfavorably) to it. It won seven Oscars, including Best Picture and another for Costner as Best Director.
Covering more of Earp's life than just the famous gunfight at the O.K. Corral, "Wyatt Earp" came loaded with actors both familiar and new, as one would expect of an old Hollywood epic biopic. It...

Exclusive: Walden Media has snapped up the life rights of Brian Schwartz, an advertising exec turned lawn care philanthropist known as “The Lawn Ranger,” for the development of a dramatic feature titled Grassroots.
Based on Schwartz’s true story, the film will explore his journey from corporate executive to a beacon of hope, as he selflessly mowed lawns for seniors, veterans, and the disabled during the Covid-19 pandemic and started a national movement. In Theory’s Samuel Kochman and Aperture’s Adam Goldworm will serve as producers, with Walden’s Frank Smith and Benjamin Tappan serving as executive producers.
In early 2020, when Schwartz faced the daunting challenge of unemployment after being let go from his advertising job, he found himself navigating a whirlwind of personal crises: his wife’s pregnancy and his father’s terminal brain cancer diagnosis. As much as his costars Lindsay Lohan and Lisa Ann Walter have voiced enthusiasm for a sequel to 1998’s “The Parent Trap,” Dennis Quaid isn’t sure it’s something he’d want to do following the death of Natasha Richardson. When asked if he would work with Lohan again, Quaid told “Entertainment Tonight,” “I would.”
“I’d love it,” Quaid continued, but added, “You know, I don’t know if we could do ‘Parent Trap 2.’ Because who wants to touch that? Natasha’s not here.”
Natasha Richardson, who starred in “The Parent Trap” as Lohan’s mother and Quaid’s ex-wife Elizabeth, and whom the twins played by Lohan look to reunite with their dad, died in 2009 following a ski accident.

The Emoji Movie has become the 10th most-watched movie on Netflix in the U.S. the week of August 5. This has become the case in spite of the movie's 6% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie may have found a wide audience because it is new on the platform.
The Emoji Movie has become a Netflix hit in the United States. The 2017 animated feature stars T.J. Miller as a Meh emoji whose ability to show multiple expressions makes him an outcast in a strictly regimented emoji society that exists inside the smartphone of teenage boy Alex. The movie was critically reviled, earning a 6% score on Rotten Tomatoes and going on to win the Worst Picture Razzie Award along with three others including Worst Director and Worst Screenplay.

Not long ago I vowed never to write about dogs or cats. It seems everyone feels compelled to talk about their pets or show us photos. Even movies.
It’s on overload: a cat named Frodo is a scene-stealer in A Quiet Place: Day One. She faithfully observes the post-dystopian rules of silence, even sensing intricate escape routes through the apocalyptic landscape. A mysterious black cat appears inconveniently in Fly Me to the Moon to upset Scarlet Johansson’s complex plan for the lunar landing.
Thus the tyranny of petdom assaults us from every direction. Few celebrities will agree to be photographed unless there’s also a camera-ready pet to hug (usually not their’s). Politicians have become the exceptions: President Biden’s dog is a serial biter and Trump’s belongs to Nathan’s Famous.

When spoof-master Mel Brooks delivered his classic "Star Wars" parody "Spaceballs" back in 1987, his Schwartz-wielding character Yogurt (a riff on Frank Oz's beloved Yoda) made a meta joke that put forth the hope of one day seeing a sequel, "Spaceballs II: The Search for More Money." Sadly, in the decades since "Spaceballs" was released, the line has proven to be nothing more than a punchline. Despite the fact that George Lucas returned to "Star Wars" with a prequel trilogy, Mel Brooks never came back to his sci-fi lampoon, even though the lambasted saga of Anakin Skywalker would have been ripe for parody. However, it seems that the chance of a "Spaceballs" sequel coming together has increased.

After two weeks of moviegoers returning to theaters in force, we’re back to a weekend with a number of lower-key releases just hoping to make any sort of mark against the two big movies. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
This weekend will once again be about “Kung Fu Panda 4” vs. “Dune: Part Two,” although it’s likely to be a second weekend with the animated movie dominating, with both of them remaining in over 4,000 theaters.
Opening in 2,850 theaters, the biggest new wide release of the weekend is the Mark Wahlberg drama “Arthur the King,” based on the true story of Mikael Lindnord (renamed “Michael Light” for the movie), an outdoors endurance racer who puts together a team to cross the Dominican Republic. That team also includes actors Simu Liu (“Barbie”), Nathalie Emmanuel (the “Fast and Furious” movies) and Ali Suliman (“Lone Survivor”), and along the way,...

Mark Wahlberg hasn't had a movie in theaters in a couple of years, but he's about to stage a comeback with "Arthur the King." Hailing from Lionsgate, the true story-inspired movie centers on adventure racer Michael Light and a street dog that he befriends during a crucial moment in his life. So, can this man and his dog tale help bring Wahlberg some glory at the box office? Even though that success may be relatively understated, it's looking very much like that could be the case.
The audience-friendly flick hits theaters next weekend, where it will be opening against "The American Society of Magical Negroes" (which figures to have a muted debut). Kristen Stewart's "Love Lies Bleeding" is also expanding into more theaters, although it also figures to have a somewhat limited footprint. This is to say, "Arthur the King" will probably do the best of the weekend's newcomers,...

Longtime Amblin Partners executive Mia Maniscalco has been tapped as president of Coin Operated, the production banner founded by horror multi-hyphenate Gary Dauberman.
Maniscalco will oversee development and production of Coin Operated’s expanding slate, working closely with Dauberman, who has been involved in some of the biggest horror franchises of the past decade, including It, Annabelle and The Nun, as writer, producer, and even director.

Zorro and Expats are the big shows coming to Prime Video in January. The former is what Amazon are calling a “bold reinterpretation” of the classic hero El Zorro for 2024. Starring Miguel Bernardeau as Diego de la Vega and Renata Notni as Lolita Marquez, it’s definitely an intriguing-sounding action-adventure series, with a ten-episode first season based on the iconic character originally created by Johnston McCulley all the way back in 1919.
Meanwhile, upcoming drama series Expats is based on the bestselling 2016 novel The Expatriates by Janice Y. K. Lee, and follows “the vibrant lives of a close-knit expatriate community” in Hong Kong. Nicole Kidman has been known for picking the right kind of shows to lead in the past, so let’s hope this is another banger for the actress, who is also on board as an executive producer here.

Tom Hiddleston would be a compelling choice to play Kvothe in the live-action adaptation of The Kingkiller Chronicle, bringing his cleverness and quick temper to the role. Kj Apa's musical talents and fiery red hair make him an ideal fit to play the younger version of Kvothe, showcasing his quick-witted and sharp-tongued nature as he grows and learns. The White Bird: A Wonder Story cast has the opportunity to tell a new story in the world of the 2017 movie Wonder, and features an equally impressive lineup as the original. In 2017's Wonder, Auggie Pullman (Jacob Tremblay) was a young boy with a rare facial deformity whose fellow students bully and ostracize him when he tries to start going to a private middle school rather than continue homeschooling. One of these students is a boy named Julian, who torments and bullies Auggie and his own mother even helps persecute Auggie by Photoshopping him out of a class photo because she felt he didn't belong. Strays has received mixed reviews from critics, with a score of 54% on Rotten Tomatoes, but the audience score is more positive at 73%. Compared to iconic dog films like Old Yeller and Lassie, Strays falls short with its raunchy and vulgar premise, which may shock some viewers. The divisiveness among critics can be attributed to the uncomfortable topics of animal abuse touched upon in Strays, while more acclaimed dog films have a family-friendly and adorable tone that appeals to a wider audience.
The Rotten Tomatoes score for Strays reveals how the R-rated comedy compares to the reception of other iconic dog films. While movies about dogs are not usual, Strays manifests a raunchy twist. While it follows the adventures of an adorable talking dog, Reggie (Will Ferrell), the comedy takes a darkly comedic turn when he and a group of foul-mouthed strays set out to get vengeance on Reggie's owner for abandoning him.

Except, in this case, there’s a twist. “It just happens to star a pack of dogs.”

When Reggie realizes how cruel his former owner (Will Forte) was, he sets off on a cross-country journey to get even the only way he knows how – bite his old owner’s d*ck off.
Review: While watching Strays, I was trying to remember the last time I had laughed so consistently at a movie. With the genre all but dead on the big screen, it’s a treat to see a legitimately funny flick come along, and, indeed, this comes from the director of the last movie that actually made me laugh really hard – Josh Greenbaum of Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar.

"Strays" takes a raunchy and unconventional approach to dog movies, with drugs, crude jokes, and lots of poop, making it not for everyone. The film pokes fun at dog movie tropes, but often resorts to simple and lowbrow humor, sacrificing the sweetness and charm of the dogs. Despite its profane comedy, "Strays" does touch on emotional elements and offers a satisfying ending, though some jokes miss the mark.
It's probably safe to say that, when you think of dog movies, you think of the inspiring, heart-warming flicks where a dog bonds with their human companions and traverses the ups and downs of life alongside them, as seen with A Dog's Purpose or Marley & Me. Strays, the raunchy new movie from director Josh Greenbaum, takes the exact opposite track. Pushing the R rating to the extreme, Strays takes its eponymous pups on their own adventure, albeit one with drugs, many dick jokes,...

From Lassie and Rin Tin Tin to 101 Dalmatians, Old Yeller, My Dog Skip, Homeward Bound, A Dog’s Purpose and on and on, the canine genre has been a staple of Hollywood movies for decades. I suppose it was only a matter of time before someone got the idea to make a balls-out, foul-mouthed, R-rated subversion of it all, and finally its time has come with the irresistible Strays, a film definitely not designed as a family movie or for kids — though I would bet, despite the language and nonstop dick jokes, they would love it anyway.

Sony has revealed that 3000 Pictures’ “Where the Crawdads Sing” will open in China beginning Nov. 25, a rare booking for a Hollywood film as the nation has cut back on foreign releases.
The Reese Witherspoon-produced melodrama, about a young outcast who finds herself embroiled in a murder trial, has already earned 140.2 million worldwide. That is nearly six times its 24 million production budget in global theatrical revenue alone, so anything from China can be treated as glorified “found money.”
Based on Delia Owens’s bestselling novel, director Olivia Newman and writer Lucy Alibar’s period piece was notable last summer for being among the only mainstream theatrical releases from, for and about women. In a summer ruled by mavericks, minions, superheroes and space rangers, the Daisy Edgar-Jones vehicle opened with 17.25 million debut weekend in mid-July and legged out to 90.2 million domestic.

Film candyman Lasse Hallström has delivered a cloying but well performed version of the life of Swedish painter Hilma af Klint
The director is all wrong. Just as you wouldn’t call on Quentin Tarantino to make a movie about Monet and his waterlilies, Lasse Hallström is a perplexing choice for a biopic about the Swedish outsider artist Hilma af Klint. Hallström is the soft-centred director of sweet-natured heart-tuggers such as Chocolat and A Dog’s Purpose. Af Klint was completely unknown when she died in 1944, and is now finally getting the recognition she deserves; Tate Modern in London is staging an exhibition of her mystical abstract canvases next year. Under Hallström’s mushy direction, her life story is simplified, sweetened and feelgood-ified.
Still, there are some cracking performances, including by the director’s daughter Tora Hallström, who plays Hilma as a free-spirited carefree young woman with fiercely present, intense blue eyes.

If crises continue to mount and late-summer box office fails to catch a second wind, Hollywood might have to revisit one of its few remaining sure things: a good dog movie.
Sure, Netflix and Amazon always have vintage canine classics on the shelf to stream, from Benji to Lassie, but a new weepie is also needed in the plexes — one to ease public tensions.
Further, those of us who’ve adopted a best friend to cope with the pandemic now are going back to work or to school. Or simply facing the fact that a best friend is more than we can handle, and so are the vet bills.
Given all this, exhibitors might wonder whether the cast of The Suicide Squad shouldn’t have featured canine stars like Hachi, Marley or even Scooby-Doo rather than live actors cast as Bloodsport, Ratcatcher or Sylvester Stallone’s King Shark.

But it is attempting to do something new. Elijah Woodis playing an FBI agent names Bill Hagmaier who ended up forming an intimate relationship with Bundy, played by Luke Kirby, in the years after he was incarcerated.
The trailer opens by making it clear that this is based on a true story. We then get into the meat and potatoes of it all, which sees Elijah Wood's Bill having conversations with Luke Kirby's Bundy. Just ahead of his scheduled execution, Bundy decides he's willing to talk. Confess to everything. But to Bill and only to Bill. It then becomes a series of very intense conversations that are making Bill question a lot about his own life.
