When she was 16, Mala Emde liked to hang out in jazz bars and talk to strange men.
“I was a weird teenager,” says the German actress, now 28. “I think I was just scared of everything people my age were doing. There was something comforting for me in going to a jazz bar and talking to older, more experienced people about this music I knew nothing about.”
These days, when it comes to jazz, Emde can hold her own. In Köln 75, which has its world premiere on Feb.16 at the Berlin Film Festival as part of the Berlinale Special lineup, she plays the real-life Vera Brandes, another weird teenager with a taste for jazz bars. At 18, Brandes organized a concert in Cologne for jazz pianist Keith Jarrett. The recording of Jarrett’s totally improvised performance became the best-selling solo jazz album of all time and the best-selling piano recording ever.

Editor’s Note: This post contains spoilers for “Only Murders in the Building” Season 4 up until the unaired finale.
After nine episodes investigating the murder of Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch), the “Only Murders in the Building” Season 4 finale is on the horizon. Between their personal connection to the victim, adventures across the Arconia courtyard, and the simultaneous movie adaptation of their podcast, this season saw the “Omitb” trio of Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short), and Mabel (Selena Gomez) pulled in various directions while trying to dig up the truth.
Episode 9, “Escape from Planet Klongo,” took another narrative turn, moving Marshall P. Pope (Jin Ha) into the position of prime suspect. But as it always is with “Only Murders,” expect at least one more killer twist up the sleeve of these storytellers in the Season 4 finale.
But before that episode premieres, here’s a quick refresher on some key elements...

Warning: The following contains major spoilers for Only Murders in the Building season 4, episode 8.
John Hoffman, who co-created and executive produces Only Murders in the Building, offers some insight into the Dudenoff killer reveal in season 4, episode 8, "Lifeboat." The episode traces Milton Dudenoff's life story and sees how he became his own killer, with the Westies helping him cremate his body. Up until this point in Only Murders in the Building season 4, it looked like the Westies had more nefarious intentions, and that Dudenoff was a victim just like Sazz.
Hoffman told The Wrap that the episode is about the tragedy and legacy of Dudenoff, who was "looking for directorial control" during "those last throws of his life" by mapping out "how he wanted to go out so specifically." The co-creator revealed that the episode began as an homage to Martin Scorsese's Gangs of New York, but later changed.

The mystery of who killed Milton Dudenoff (Griffin Dunne) was solved in Tuesday’s episode of “Only Murders in the Building,” titled “Lifeboat” — and it turns out to be none other than Dudenoff himself, with an assist by the Westies.
After learning in last week’s episode that the Westies had been cashing Dudenoff’s checks despite his death, Oliver, Mabel, Charles, Eugene Levy, Eva Longoria and Zach Galifianakis invite the group over for a game of “Oh Hell” in an effort to confront them about his murder. But the plan quickly fell apart when the Westies revealed that they know the jig is up in their rent control scheme and hold them at knife point.

In the previous episode, we got to know some vital information about Sazz’s murder. Mabel, Oliver, and Charles were told by Detective Williams that the killer was an excellent shooter, and that is why they were able to shoot from the West Tower with such precision. Secondly, the trio came to know that Dudenoff, the mysterious guy in the West Tower, in whose apartment Mabel found a pig, was in Portugal. Mabel didn’t believe it even for a second, and she thought that it was all a cover-up to save the man and give him a perfect alibi. The third and most significant revelation was that a woman told the trio on ham radio to stop their investigation if they wanted to live. She told them that the last person who came asking questions was no longer alive, implying that she knew what happened to Sazz. So let...
