‘Fuori’ Review: Valeria Golino Shines in Mario Martone’s Tribute to Maverick Italian Writer Goliarda Sapienza
Image
If the words “Valeria Golino prison fight” seem an unlikely combination, never fear: the veteran Italian director Mario Martone gleefully stage one of these in his Cannes Palme d’Or contender “Fuori.” Best known to younger audiences for her role as the Adèle Haenel character’s mother in “Portrait of a Lady on Fire,” multi-hyphenate Golino seems to have dedicated much of her recent career to exploring the legacy of the vaunted Italian writer Goliarda Sapienza: directing a 2024 prestige miniseries based on her avowed masterpiece “The Art of Joy” and now playing her in Martone’s “Fuori” at an auspicious moment in her life and career.

Born in 1924, with a life forged in Italian anti-fascism, religious nonconformity, and artistic radicalism, Sapienza’s turbulent existence had the feel of a one-person prison fight itself, even if her name is not immediately recognizable to international audiences.

The film’s auteur — making...

'Final Destination Bloodlines' Directors Address Death Theory That Could Have Broken Canon
Image
The Final Destination franchise has returned with a vengeance this weekend, withFinal Destination Bloodlines delivering the highest critical scores and the best opening day box office results of the entire saga. However, when creating a legacy sequel linked to a franchise with a lot of history, there are some very easy ways to slip up and retcon the past...or the future in this case.

One popular theory was that Death’s whole Final Destination plan centered around the opening sequence in which Iris saves many people from the Skyview disaster she witnesses in a premonition, setting off a chain of events that has repercussions for both the survivors and their future families. Addressing whether they considered making all the previous franchise victims directly linked to those survivors, directors Adam Stein and Zach Lipovsky told ScreenRant that it was certainly something they considered, but it would have broken franchise canon.

The Nastiest Final Destination Bloodlines Kill Will Create A New Phobia In Horror Fans
Image
Spoilers follow.

The "Final Destination" franchise has lain dormant for 14 years, waiting for the perfect moment to strike fear into a whole new generation. I admittedly had my reservations about "Bloodlines" simply because "Final Destination 5" is both the best entry and the thematic lynchpin of the entire series. Most horror franchises would kill to have an ending this tight, so the thought of resurrecting it for another go-around worried me initially. Rest assured, however, that "Bloodlines" is a more than worthy successor that takes the series in an exciting new direction, while still offering up a buffet of gruesomely gory deaths that's best experienced with a crowd. /Film's Bj Colangelo wrote in her review that the sixth entry is a franchise best and I'm very much on the same page.

"Bloodlines" kicks off its carnival of carnage with a tremendous opening premonition sequence set in the '60s atop a Skyview restaurant.

‘Bono: Stories of Surrender’ Review: U2 Frontman’s Life Story Is Grand and Bombastic, the Way We Like It
Image
Leave it to Bono to turn a book tour into something as extravagant as “Bono: Stories of Surrender,” the Apple TV+ movie that had its world premiere on Friday night at the Cannes Film Festival.

The U2 singer has never been one for half-measures or modesty, and his version of the book tour for his 2022 autobiography “Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story” was a dramatic, theatrical presentation that mixed memory and music to provide snapshots from his life, from a child in Dublin to an international rock star. Presented on a small number of stages around the world, most notably during a 10-night stand in New York’s Beacon Theatre, it was no book reading or stripped down “Springsteen on Broadway”-style presentation, but a sensory delight as theatrical in its own way as U2’s own performances.

And “Bono: Stories of Surrender” takes the Beacon shows as a launching pad – but...

Subhash K Jha Revisits The Finest Ajay Devgan-Kajol Starrer As It Completes 17 Years
Image
Nothing that Ajay Devgan has done in the past prepares us for the poise, poignancy and sensitivity of his directorial debut. U, Me Aur Hum is one of those tender and tactile melodramas that leave you with minty thoughts and dewy eyes.

The heart is completely at the right place as Ajay, turning director with a élan that thumbs its nose gently at all those who scoff at his actioner’s antecedents, tells the story of a husband whose gentle ministrations take his Alzheimer’s stricken wife from her absentminded youth to blanked-out old age.

The journey gives us insights into the man-woman relationship and the intricate commitments of a marriage as seen through the eyes that go beyond the romance and excitement of courtship to an area where dark clouds gather over a relationship and threaten its annihilation.

The trick, says Ajay’s soft but persuasive film, is to hold on,...

Final Destination Bloodlines Trailer Dives Into a Generational History of Cheating Death
Image
25 years after the beginning of the Final Destination franchise, the horror franchise is still alive and kicking. Almost a decade and a half since the last installment, Final Destination Bloodlines, comes with a different premise following Death.

Warner Bros. officially released the first trailer for the upcoming Final Destination 6, which will shift the story completely. While earlier entries followed strangers who were saved by the right person at the right time and cheated death, the new entry will follow a generational story, with the grandmother saving a big group decades ago and death coming for the entire bloodline that shouldn't have existed.

The almost two-and-a-half-minute trailer proves why the Final Destination franchise was so popular. In just a few minutes, the creative team behind the new entry, directing duo Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein, who helm the horror film from a script by Scream veteran Guy Busick and Lori Evans Taylor,...

Jack Quaid Gets Beat Up In Brilliant Novocaine Marketing Stunt
Image
The Boys star Jack Quaid is going to extremes to promote his new movie. The actor gets battered and bruised while sitting courtside at a Los Angeles Clippers game in a brilliant marketing stunt for Novocaine.

In the short clip shared by Pop Crave on X, Quaid can be seen watching the Los Angeles Clippers take on the Sacremento Kings alongside his Novocaine co-star Amber Midthunder. The actor, who is wearing a cast on his arm, seemingly gets more injured throughout the night. He eventually conducts an interview in the arena wearing a neck brace, with cuts and bruises on his face.

It’s Raining Men Review: A Frothy, Body-Positive Romp Through Midlife Desire
Image
Caroline Vignal’s It’s Raining Men follows Iris (Laure Calamy), a Parisian dentist whose stagnant marriage propels her into a whirlwind of app-driven dalliances, blending cheeky humor with poignant introspection.

The film’s premise—middle-aged desire clashing with marital complacency—echoes the French tradition of treating infidelity as a nuanced exploration of human complexity rather than a moral failing. Vignal situates this tale within a cultural landscape where Anglo-American audiences might demand judgment, yet here, the focus remains on Iris’s liberation.

The script nods to classics like Breathless in its breezy defiance of narrative rigidity, though Vignal swaps Godard’s frenetic jump cuts for lush, surreal detours, such as a spontaneous musical sequence set to the titular anthem.

This juxtaposition of grounded realism and whimsical escapism mirrors France’s ambivalence toward tradition and modernity—a tension as relevant in today’s #MeToo era as it was in the heyday of the Nouvelle Vague.

‘Luther’ Creator Neil Cross on Exchanging East London Grime for the Italian Sun in New Thriller Series ‘Iris’
Image
One of the first rules Neil Cross gave his team when making Iris, the new thriller series he created for Sky U.K., was that the lead character should never drive a car with a roof. “If Grace Kelly wouldn’t drive it, neither should Iris,” says Cross, laughing.

After spending years in the grime of East London making Luther, the dark cop drama starring Idris Elba as a homicide detective with some very nasty personal demons, Cross was ready for something light and sunny. With Iris, which “to create a different kind of show… something my wife and I could enjoy with a glass of wine on the sofa.”

Iris exchanges Luther‘s cold and cloudy London for a sun-drenched Italian countryside — the show was shot largely in Sardina — and takes inspiration from the British spy and adventure shows of Cross’ youth, think The Saint or The Persuaders!, for its chase thriller plot line.

Fremantle Brings ‘Costiera,’ Epic Adventure ‘Sandokan’ to London TV Screenings: ‘It’s ‘Poldark’ Meets ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’
Image
Fremantle is readying to unleash ‘Sandokan’ onto industry insiders during next week’s London TV Screenings.

“It’s simply a great epic adventure, based on a known IP. It’s ‘Poldark’ meets ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’,” enthuses CEO Commercial and International Jens Richter, promising action, adventure and some good old-fashioned pirating.

Starring Can Yaman (“Daydreamer”), Ed Westwick (“Gossip Girl”) and John Hannah (“Spartacus: Blood and Sand”), it’s based on the series of novels by Emilio Salgari and produced by Fremantle’s Italian content powerhouse Lux Vide. Set in the mid-1800s, it heads to a place inhabited by native Dayak tribes yet dominated by British law. Sandokan is used to fighting for his survival, but one thing catches him by surprise: love.

“There’s a portion of romance,” admits Richter. With each episode set in a different environment, “Sandokan” will “fit the needs of the market perfectly,” he adds.

Reese Witherspoon Is "Haunted" By Ruined Kate Winslet Friendship (Or So It Appears)
Image
Reese Witherspoon and Will Ferrell, stars of the recent Prime Video film You're Cordially Invited, interviewed each other for a People video piece, and the conversation ended up going viral for very different reasons. At one point, they touched on what it's like to give speeches and if they've ever regretted a speech. "I have one," said Withersoon. "It haunts me, it literally haunts me." She recalled being asked to give an award out to a friend of hers, a "serious, proper actress," and how her speech ended up ruining their friendship. Based on all the information and the wonders of the permanent internet, internet sleuths have discovered that friend to be Titanic star Kate Winslet, though Witherspoon has yet to confirm this. Nonetheless, based on what she said, it's almost certain to be Winslet. Witherspoon said:

Companion's Bloody Ending, Explained
Image
The following contains spoilers for Companion, now playing in theaters. It also has a mention of sexual assault, domestic violence, and suicide.

When the trailers for Drew Hancock's Companion dropped, fans were mystified. They wondered if it was a rom-com with dark humor, but the movie depicts Jack Quaid's Josh being a toxic, violent boyfriend to Sophie Thatcher's Iris.

Companion will draw many parallels to shows like Black Mirror. Josh is very much a controlling man, but not in the conventional sense. His journey and the enslavement of Iris has a unique twist. As their bloody journey turns from a tryst at a secluded cabin into an all-out war, Companion crafts a very thought-provoking story that feels very relatable.

You Might Have Missed The Hidden Meaning Behind A Song In Companion
Image
The following contains mild spoilers for "Companion."

"Companion" is the first big surprise of the movie year, a funny, thrilling film with a great cast and an even better twist. As Chris Evangelista wrote in his review for /Film, "'Companion' is the first great film of 2025 — a funny, fast-moving, meticulously crafted horror-thriller with a killer performance from lead Sophie Thatcher."

The film follows Iris (Thatcher), who goes on a weekend getaway trip with her boyfriend Josh (Jack Quaid) to visit a group of his friends at a remote cabin that quickly turns into a chaotic bloodbath. The film also stars Lukas Gage, Harvey Guillén, Megan Suri, and Ruper Friend.

This is a notoriously hard movie to talk about without talking about its premise and the first-act twist, which the second trailer already openly revealed. Still, if you don't want to know anything about what "Companion" is actually about,...

Companion's Biggest Twist Goes So Far Beyond The Trailer
Image
This article contains major spoilers for "Companion."

Gender-based conflict, violence, and terror are embedded into the fabric of horror. Vampires searching for brides, damsels in distress needing to be saved, "Hitchcock blondes," and masked slashers hacking up scantily clad babysitters and camp counselors are mainstays of the genre, and the overwhelming majority of horror stories are either exploiting, examining, or subverting the expectations of gender-based violence. However, as film theorist Carol J. Clover so perfectly explained in her essay "Her Body, Himself: Gender in the Slasher Film," when it comes to horror, "gender is less a wall than a permeable membrane."

Horror movies are rich with cross-gender identification, and it's been psychologically theorized that horror fans have a greater capacity for empathy. It's why cis men watch a film like "Aliens" and easily identify Ellen Ripley as the coolest character without ever believing she's "lesser-than" for being a woman, and...

How ‘Companion’ Went From Zach Cregger’s ‘Barbarian’ Follow-Up to Drew Hancock’s Acclaimed Debut
Image
What began as a pandemic-era writing exercise is now Companion, Drew Hancock’s widely acclaimed feature directorial debut.

Feeling unfulfilled by the sitcom-heavy direction his career was going, Hancock admitted some hard truths to himself during the dregs of 2020. So the Omaha, Nebraska native decided to write his way out of his lot at the time by crafting a genre feature that he could use as a writing sample to land other related work. That screenplay became Companion, and feeling confident in what he’d committed to paper, the filmmaker decided to send the script to a mutual friend of BoulderLight Pictures’ J.D. Lifshitz.

Riding high on their recent producorial success of Zach Cregger’s Barbarian, Lifshitz and his producing partner Raphael Margules were so impressed by Hancock’s script that they brought it to the rest of the Barbarian brain trust including Vertigo’s Roy Lee and Cregger himself.

Daniel Auteuil and ‘Emilia Perez’ Collaborator Jean-Baptiste Pouilloux Set Up Next Features With Les Films Velvet (Exclusive)
Image
Actor-director Daniel Auteuil and key “Emilia Perez” collaborator Jean-Baptiste Pouilloux have set up their next features with Les Films Velvet, the auteur-focused production outfit behind this year’s Unifrance Rendez-Vous in Paris opener “The Musicians” as well as Rebecca Zlotowski’s upcoming, Jodie Foster-led thriller “Vie Privée.”

After last year’s Cannes-launched legal thriller “An Ordinary Case,” Auteuil will step back behind the camera for the World War II drama “Une Nuit” (“One Night”). Co-written by Auteuil and filmmaker Camille Lugan (“The Book of Joy”), the film follows the incredible true story of a 1942 effort to rescue more then one hundred Jewish children from a deportation camp just outside of Lyon. Les Films Velvet’s Frederic Jouve will produce alongside Adrien Nussenbaum.

An in-demand assistant director who has worked closely with Jacques Audiard, Zlotowski and Nadav Lapid, Pouilloux most recently led second unit on “Emilia Perez” before directing the Canal Plus series “Iris.

Squid Game Season 2’s Front Man Vs. Thanos Fight Was Secretly A Callback To This 15-Year-Old Lee Byung-hun & T.O.P K-Drama
Image
Season 2 of Squid Game sees Lee Byung-hun’s character, Hwang In-ho, come into his own, after his identity as villainous game-runner the Front Man was revealed late in season 1. He’s joined by Korean hip-hop star T.O.P, who arrives in the third episode of the season playing Thanos, a loudmouth rapper who’s entered the game after losing all his money in bad crypto investments.

The scene is set for these two heavyweights of Korean entertainment to square off in the following episode, when Thanos starts beating up another player with his friend Nam-gyu. They blame their victim, Myung-gi, for defrauding them with cryptocurrencies. With the other participants watching on, the Front Man steps in. “What makes you think you can behave like that?” he asks, approaching T.O.P’s character. This face-off appears to be a deliberate reference to the TV series that launched Byung-hun to A-list status across Asia.

Disappointed By Front Man's Squid Game Season 2 Twist? Watch This 15-Year-Old K-Drama For A Better Ending
Image
Warning! Spoilers ahead for Squid Game season 2.Squid Game season 2 ends with a heartbreaking twist involving Front Man/Hwang In-ho, but for those who want a better ending, Lee Byung-hun's 15-year-old K-drama, Iris, is a good follow-up watch. After an extended hiatus, Netflix's groundbreaking Korean show returns for its much-anticipated sophomore year. The latest ensemble is largely composed of new faces, primarily because most of the players from its debut year ended up dying during the competition, Squid Game season 2 features some familiar faces. Aside from Lee Jung-jae's Seong Gi-hun, who re-enters the underground game, it also sees Lee reprise his role as Front Man.

Front Man's role in Squid Game season 1 was minor. He was mostly behind his mask, commanding the guards who facilitated the deadly competition. It wasn't until later in the run that he was unmasked, as he came face-to-face with his police officer brother,...

Mayor Of Kingstown Season 2 Already Showed Its Big Twist Was Inevitable
Image
Paramount+’s Mayor Of Kingstown season 2, episode 2 showed Iris (Emma Laird) fleeing the McLusky household to seek Milo's (Aidan Gillen) aid - but this tragic twist was shown to be inevitable far before that. Mayor Of Kingstown season 2, episode 1 focused on detailing the aftermath of the prison riots in Kingstown, both in relation to the inmates’ life and the power vacuum created by the gangs’ leaders’ death. Episode 2 expands on this, but also reveals that Milo is once again running his own operations, this time outside of prison - showing his hideout when Iris flees to request his help.

A big Mayor Of Kingstown season 1 storyline involved Milo trying to understand what buttons to push to force Mike (Jeremy Renner) to help him. Milo eventually realized Mike couldn’t have not interfered if he hurt Iris, prompting Iris and Mike’s connection in Mayor Of Kingstown season 1. However, Mike’s...

Sergio Leone Saw Once Upon A Time In America As A Dying Breed Of Cinema
Image
Sergio Leone's filmmaking instincts were unerring. Once he got his feet under him with "A Fistful of Dollars," he made masterfully composed widescreen Western epics that were dense with references to their genre predecessors. You don't have to be a movie buff to fall in love with a Leone film, but your enjoyment is certainly enhanced, particularly on multiple viewings, when you realize how deftly he's integrated the works of John Ford, Howard Hawks, Anthony Mann and so on into his mythic vision of the West. And while his Italian perspective, which spawned the label "Spaghetti Western," gave these films a vaguely European sensibility, he largely connected with audiences the world over because he spoke fluently the language of cinema.

Leone might've been an articulate filmmaker, but he was far from loquacious. He only spoke when he had something to say. This is why, after the completion of "Duck, You Sucker...

Grant Gustin in Flash (2014)
The Flash Season 7 Episode 2 Review: The Speed of Thought
Grant Gustin in Flash (2014)
To say that The Flash Season 7 Episode 2 was an emotional rollercoaster full of twists, humor, and emotion would be an understatement.

The episode started strong with a heartfelt scene to remember all the Wells. It only got more interesting as Barry and the rest of Team Flash dealt with his new power of speed thinking.

Everything about "The Speed of Thought" was classic The Flash, dating back to the glories of The Flash Season 1. If this is a picture of how the rest of The Flash Season 7 will play out, we are in for a treat.

Barry's heart has always been at the very core of the show. Barry Allen was not the Paragon of Love on the Crisis of Infinite Earths for nothing.

But with the death of Wells, Barry wondered whether or not his heart was a vulnerability that Team Flash's enemies used to their advantage.

Hayley Williams Delivers Delicate Confessionals on ‘Flowers’
Image
A bittersweet truth of this pandemic, among many, is that the “quarantine album” has rapidly become its own genre. While the music industry as a whole has had to make do with recording albums remotely during lockdown for the past year, a distinct sonic concept for many of these releases has emerged: emotionally raw, the creation of one or a few people in a home studio, often described as “acoustic,” even as layers of synths and reverb contribute to the feelings of isolation. (Bon Iver’s For Emma, Forever Ago...

How Saoirse Ronan could be on the same Oscar trajectory as ‘Ammonite’ co-star Kate Winslet
Image
Saoirse Ronan and Kate Winslet are both proven academy favorites with multiple nominations to their names. Both are now in another plausible Oscar contender, “Ammonite,” in which Winslet plays Mary Anning, a paleontologist who forms a brief but intense relationship with Ronan’s Charlotte Murchison. If both were to earn a nomination for “Ammonite,” it would be Ronan’s fifth and Winslet’s eighth, continuing their runs as some of the most nominated actresses of the 21st century. While Winslet already won her Oscar for 2008’s “The Reader,” Ronan has yet to take home the little gold man, but she might just be on the same path to victory as her co-star in the end.

Winslet earned Oscar nominations for “Sense and Sensibility” (1995), “Titanic” (1997), “Iris” (2001), “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” (2004) and “Little Children” (2006) before finally winning for “The Reader” (she was later nominated for 2015’s “Steve Jobs”). During the run-up to Winslet’s victory,...

Gloria Steinem in ‘Mrs. America’ and ‘The Glorias’: First time 3 actors score Golden Globe bids for the same role in the same year?
Image
Actors portraying feminist icon Gloria Steinem might be nominated in three categories at the upcoming Golden Globes. If that happens, it will be the first time that three actors are nominated in the same year for playing the same role.

SEEDear Golden Globes: Don’t drive a stake through the heart of ‘What We Do in the Shadows,’ nominate it instead

On the TV side, Rose Byrne plays Steinem in the FX on Hulu limited series “Mrs. America,” which chronicles the struggle for women’s rights between conservative Phyllis Schlafly (Cate Blanchett) and progressive feminists led by Steinem. On the film side, Oscar winners Alicia Vikander and Julianne Moore play Steinem at different stages of her life as she rises to prominence as a leader of the women’s liberation movement in Julie Taymor‘s biopic “The Glorias.”

It is not unprecedented for two actors from the same film to be nominated for one role.

See Hayley Williams Play Solo Songs for ‘Tiny Desk (Home) Concert’

Hayley Williams performed three songs from her solo album Petals for Armor live for the first time for the latest installment of NPR’s Tiny Desk (Home) Concert.

For the mini-set — recorded in Williams’ home — the Paramore singer played “Pure Love,” “Taken,” and “Dead Horse” alongside a band that included Becca Mancari and Julien Baker.

“I’ve never done this without Paramore,” Williams admits during the performance; Petals for Armor, written during a period of self-imposed isolation, arrived amid the coronavirus pandemic, preventing the singer from touring behind the LP.

Can Netflix Land Charlie Kaufman His Fifth Oscar Nomination for ‘I’m Thinking of Ending Things’?
Image
Netflix has given a platform to various voices in the Hollywood industry such as Alfonso Cuarón (“Roma”), Dee Rees (“Mudbound”), and most recently Martin Scorsese (“The Irishman”), in which filmmakers get to bring their distinct visions to life with the autonomy they wouldn’t be afforded at a traditional studio. As Oscars voters have become more accepting of the streaming giant’s offerings (see Laura Dern’s best supporting actress win for “Marriage Story”), it’s encouraging to see Netflix roll out the red carpet for Charlie Kaufman’s “I’m Thinking of Ending Things.” With critics weighing in with mostly positive reviews, Kaufman — who serves as the film’s writer, director and producer — along with his below-the-line team, could be an underdog contender in this year’s unusual awards race.

The film tells the story of an unnamed woman (Jessie Buckley) traveling with her new boyfriend (Jesse Plemons) to meet...
