Clint Eastwood Once Eyed Tom Cruise for His Musical That Ended up With 8 Oscar Nominations
Image
The past two years have seen a sense of finality with both Clint Eastwood and Tom Cruise. While Eastwood directed his final film, Juror #2, at the age of 94 last year, Cruise is reportedly done with his tenure as Ethan Hunt in the Mission: Impossible franchise. Sadly, both Hollywood legends have never collaborated on a film.

However, they almost came close to working on a project that seems unlike both of the action legends. Eastwood was reportedly linked to a remake of the musical drama A Star is Born and was eyeing Cruise to play the lead role. However, it never materialized, and Bradley Cooper finally took the reins and made it his directorial debut.

Clint Eastwood Nearly Directed A Musical Remake That Would Have Starred A Pop Diva
Image
The most recent remake of "A Star is Born" was one of the defining films of 2018. The film was the directorial debut of Academy Award-nominee Bradley Cooper, who also co-wrote, co-produced, and starred alongside Lady Gaga. It was the fourth iteration of the title, beginning with the 1937 film directed by William A. Wellman, which featured Janet Gaynor and Fredric March, followed by a 1954 remake directed by George Cukor and starring Judy Garland and James Mason, which was then followed by the 1976 remake directed by Frank Pierson that Barbara Streisand and Kris Kristofferson headlined.

What some may forget regarding the fourth "A Star is Born" film is that before Bradley Cooper signed on to direct, a legendary filmmaker was going to be at the helm. That director was none other than Academy Award-winner Clint Eastwood, who previously directed Cooper in "American Sniper." Along with the involvement of Eastwood, one of the...

Jonathan Groff would be the first person to win Best Actor in a Musical consecutively
Image
Just in Time star Jonathan Groff in currently in second place in Gold Derby's Tony Awards predictions for Best Actor in a Musical, only behind fellow Glee alum Darren Criss for Maybe Happy Ending. The former triumphed for Merrily We Roll Along just last year, so if he prevails again, he'd be the first individual in history to win this category consecutively.

Prior to Groff, five men were Tony nominated for Best Actor in a Musical two years in a row, but didn't emerge victorious:

Gregory Hines in 1980 for Comin' Uptown and 1981 for Sophisticated Ladies George Hearn in 1983 for A Doll's Life and 1984 for La Cage aux Folles (the latter of which resulted in a win) Patrick Wilson in 2001 for The Full Monty and 2002 for Oklahoma! Michael Cerveris in 2006 for Sweeney Todd and 2007 for LoveMusik Brian d'Arcy James in 2023 for Into the Woods and 2024 for Days of Wine and Roses...

Anonymous Oscar Ballot: Director Embraces ‘Anora,’ ‘A Complete Unknown,’ ‘Sing Sing,’ and ‘Wicked’
Image
With final Oscar balloting closed on February 18, we’re continuing with our eighth annual series of interviews with Academy voters from different branches for their unfiltered takes on what got picked, overlooked, and overvalued in the 2025 award season. Voter’s picks are in bold. Interview edited for brevity.

Best Picture

“Anora.” I went with “A Complete Unknown” for such a long time, for two months before I saw “Anora.” Just the balancing act of the humor, the tension, the male gaze sexiness, and [Anora’s] character being so aggressive and tough and not taking shit, this long-lost child inside. When that last scene happened, it broke your heart, and [Mikey Madison] was so good in it. And the boyfriend [Mark Eydelshteyn], from the moment he walked on the screen, I wanted to do violence to him. Every chance she gets, she would go in his lap and snuggle up and there’d be no conversation.

The Only Broadway Adaptation Clint Eastwood Ever Directed Was A Flop
Image
Musicals are practically scientifically engineered to lift your spirits. Plots be damned, you can't help but feel a little elated after two-plus hours of watching people cut a rug while singing about their innermost feelings. It's a fundamental principle that allowed Broadway titans like Stephen Sondheim and Andrew Lloyd Webber to reimagine tragic love stories and gothic horror thrillers as crowd-pleasing spectacles about murder, revenge, and, most terrifying of all, having to deal with a needy, egotistical lead actor. Even when they end in sorrow and despair, you still leave the theater humming their catchiest earworms on an endorphin high.

What happens, then, when you hire the authority on cinematic melancholy that is 21st century Clint Eastwood to turn your Broadway smash into a movie? You get "Jersey Boys," possibly one of the most downbeat and dour musicals ever committed to the screen. If you ever wondered whether "Mystic River...

The 13 Best Music Biopics to Watch After ‘A Complete Unknown’
Image
Let’s face it. Theatre has been the most successful place for stories about popular musicians. Alicia Keys’ “Hell’s Kitchen” is selling big on Broadway, as is “Mj.” “A Beautiful Noise,” about Neil Diamond ‘s professional and personal history, had a nice run there, and is touring the country after its run in Los Angeles. We’ve had “Tina,” “Jersey Boys,” The Temptations’ “Ain’t Too Proud,” Carole King’s “Beautiful” and others. A new musical is being tested now about Frank Sinatra. But the most exciting news arrives this spring, when recent Tony winner Jonathan Groff portrays Bobby Darin.

But movies about musical stars? A mixed bag. (including Kevin Spacey in a bad one about Bobby Darin) Documentaries have been the safest form to chronicle the life of famous musicians: Ones about David Crosby, Joan Baez, Springsteen, and Linda Ronstadt. And, of course, “Woodstock” and Martin Scorsese’s “Last Waltz.

How the Hell Has 'Rocketman' Not Become a Broadway Show?
Image
There have been tons of entries into the "jukebox" musical genre in recent years. The music of everyone from The Four Seasons (Jersey Boys) and Michael Jackson (M.J.: The Musical) to Tina Turner (Tina) and Cher (The Cher Show) have been adapted into successful Broadway stage productions. These biopic musicals are a great way to introduce fans of popular music to the theater, as well as to provide a fun, intriguing way of telling that particular musician's story. These productions are also typically pretty profitable because they come with a built-in recognition of that specific artist and their hit music within the show. But there's one musical icon's life that is just begging for a stage adaptation.

‘Juror #2’: Clint Eastwood’s Courtroom Drama Is Guilty of…
Image
Clint Eastwood — movie star, award-winning auteur, icon of stoic masculinity, man who occasionally talks to chairs — turned 94 this past May. It may be weird to mention this upfront, although talk of age, the ravages of time, and the art of knowing when to gracefully retire has been a steady topic of conversation in the first half of 2024. None of that hand-wringing seems to apply to our man Clint, however. In the past decade, the actor-director has made eight movies, ranging from musicals (Jersey Boys) to docu-thrillers (The 15:17 to Paris) to complicated-men biopics (Sully,...

Longtime Clint Eastwood Producer Addresses Whether Juror #2 Will Be The Icon's Last Movie
Image
Clint Eastwoods longtime producer, Tim Moore, has addressed whether his latest film, Juror #2, will be the movie icon's last. The upcoming movie follows Justin Kemp (Nicholas Hoult), a juror for a high-profile murder trial who finds himself struggling with a serious moral dilemma that could influence the verdict and potentially convict, or free, the accused killer. The film also stars Toni Collette, J. K. Simmons, Zoey Deutch, and Kiefer Sutherland. Moore has worked with Eastwood for over two decades, producing films such as American Sniper, Cry Macho, Richard Jewell, The Mule, J. Edgar, The 15:17 to Paris, Jersey Boys, and Sully.

In an interview with Deadline, Moore was asked if Juror #2 would be Eastwood's swan song. The producer stated that he didn't know, adding that Eastwood had stated that he planned to call it quits for some time. He also commented that he would retire before the director but that he has yet to retire.

Francesca Eastwood is more than just a media fixture. The name, however, has taken quite the tumble in the last few days, with her arrest on a felony domestic violence charge and the imminent fallout. While the details of the incident remain elusive for many, it is also naturally raising a few eyebrows.

Francesca is one of Clint Eastwood’s eight children. Her mother, Frances Fisher, is perhaps best known for her role as Ruth DeWitt Bukater in Titanic (1997). Fisher and Clint Eastwood met in 1988, during the pre-production party for Pink Cadillac, never wed, and split by 1995, when Fisher started going out with George Clooney.

Clint Eastwood, meanwhile, is still chugging on. Almost seventy years into his career, the 94-year-old’s Juror #2 will be out in November 2024, a film in which his daughter Francesca plays a role.

Clint Eastwood's 8 Kids Have Interesting Careers of Their Own
Image

He may be one of the most iconic actors and directors in Hollywood history, but Clint Eastwood is also a proud dad.

The silver-screen legend has been married twice — first to Maggie Johnson from 1953–1984, then to Dina Eastwood from 1996–2014. And between his ex-wives and other previous relationships, he's welcomed eight children into the world over the years.

Below, we take a look at Clint's kids — many of whom have followed into their famous dad's footsteps, from acting to directing and more.

Clint's eldest child, Laurie Murray — who was born on Feb. 11, 1954 — was apparently conceived while Clint was still engaged to his first wife, Maggie Johnson. And even wilder? Laurie didn't know she was Clint's child until about 30 years ago, as her mother had given her up for adoption after she was born. Clint apparently didn't know about Laurie either. Laurie now has a great relationship with her dad,...

Jon Bon Jovi is a snowbird — the nickname given to people of a certain age who flee their northern homes during the winter months to areas with warmer climates.

It’s late April and the famous New Jersey native is in Palm Beach, Fla.

“My license still says the great state of New Jersey,” the Bon Jovi frontman tells me on this week’s “Just for Variety” podcast. “I’m there when it’s not cold. But when it’s cold, these old bones are on the beach.”

The rocker, 62, is talking and thinking a lot about his age lately. While his Hulu docuseries, “Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story,” chronicles the iconic rock band’s rise to the top, the through line of the four episodes is the singer’s struggle to overcome vocal problems in time for the group’s 40th anniversary tour.

Cher and Two Jonas Brothers Rock Out at Dazzling 30th amfAR Cannes Gala
Image
Which performance received the best reviews at Cannes? Cher managed to conquer this year’s film festival even without appearing on screen.

At 12:30 a.m. in the South of France, decked out in a dazzling sequined purple pantsuit, Cher took the stage at Cannes amfAR, the charity gala devoted to raising money for research for HIV and AIDS. “I thought you guys would be drunk, but obviously you’re not,” Cher said after performing an acoustic rendition of “Walking in Memphis,” the Marc Cohn ballad she covered on her 1995 album “It’s a Man’s World,” that had hundreds of guests cheering her on.

Three songs later — and one costume change into a black sparkling jacket over couture negligee — Cher had emerged victorious. The crowd at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc would have given her the biggest standing ovation of Cannes, except they never sat during her 15-minute set.

Before belting out her pop hit “Believe,...

Frankie Valli’s Son Secures Restraining Order Against Brother After Threats
Image
Singer Frankie Valli‘s son, Emilio, has been granted a temporary restraining order against his brother, Francesco. In recent months, Emilio claims that Francesco has repeatedly threatened to harm him and their famous father.

The request for the restraining order was filed on April 8 by Emilio, 29, in Los Angeles. In the filing, Emilio stated that Francesco, 36, attempted to break into their father’s property on April 5. During the incident, while waiting for law enforcement to arrive, Francesco allegedly made multiple physical threats to harm or even kill both Frankie and Emilio. Emilio asserted that this behavior is part of a pattern that has persisted for several months.

Emilio indicated in the filing that the family believes Francesco is struggling with addiction to opiates. While Frankie has been providing financial support to his son, Emilio claims that the support is now conditional on Francesco agreeing to enter a residential drug treatment program.

Clint Eastwood’s Career In Photos: From ‘Maverick’ To ‘Dirty Harry’ To ‘Cry Macho’
Image
Powerful roles and memorable lines have been the hallmark of Clint Eastwood’s career. Cops, cowboys drifters, soldiers and, generally bad ass men’s men … he’s played them all.

The lines that stick with you? Dirty Harry: “You’ve got to ask yourself a question: ‘Do you feel lucky?’ Well, do ya, punk.” Josey Wales: “When I get to likin’ someone, they ain’t around long.” Bill Munny in Unforgiven: “It’s a hell of a thing, killin’ a man. Take away all he’s got, and all he’s ever gonna have.” And perhaps the most quoted of all, Harry Callahan in Sudden Impact: “Go ahead, make my day.”

Eastwood has a cop for so long he should be collecting a pension. He joined the force with Dirty Harry in 1971 and his last movie as a cop was A Perfect World in (1993). He made five...

2024 Grammy race for Best Musical Theater Album: Can another Sondheim album upset the reigning Tony champ?
Image
According to the current combined predictions of Gold Derby users, reigning Tony champ “Kimberly Akimbo” is the frontrunner to win this year’s Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album with 10/3 odds. So far within this century 10 shows that won Tonys for both Best Musical and Best Score also came out on top at the Grammys. Among them are “The Producers,” “Hairspray,” “Spring Awakening,” “In the Heights,” “The Book of Mormon,” “Kinky Boots,” “Hamilton,” “Dear Evan Hansen,” “The Band’s Visit” and “Hadestown.” Will that trend continue this year?

SEEGrammys flashback: Revisiting The Weeknd’s notorious, confounding 2021 snub

“Kimberly Akimbo” features a score by Jeanine Tesori and David Lindsay-Abaire. Tesori has been nominated five times before but still has yet to win. Those previous bids were for “Thoroughly Modern Millie” in 2003 (lost to “Hairspray”), “Shrek the Musical” in 2010 (lost to “West Side Story”), “Fun Home” in 2016 (lost to “Hamilton”), “Soft Power” in...

‘Smash’ Broadway Musical Takes a Step From Screen to Stage With Industry Readings Starring Robyn Hurder, Kerry Butler (Exclusive)
Image
“Smash,” the TV series about the making of a fictional Broadway musical, takes an early step toward becoming a real-life Broadway musical on Sept. 22, with a pair of industry readings led by Tony nominees Robyn Hurder and Kerry Butler.

Hurder plays Ivy, an actress cast in the lead role of a new musical about Marilyn Monroe, and Butler appears as Karen, Ivy’s understudy. Their characters share the names of two pivotal roles in the TV show, which also focused on the development of a Marilyn Monroe musical called “Bombshell.”

While it retains the series’ most recognizable elements, the musical adaptation of “Smash” departs in other ways with a storyline and cast of characters that are inspired by the series but not direct translations. “It’s definitely a new script,” said director Susan Stroman of the musical’s book by Bob Martin (“The Prom”) and Rick Elice (“Jersey Boys”). “It...

Is Clint Eastwood's Cry Macho Based On A True Story?
Image
Clint Eastwood's film Cry Macho is not based on a true story, but is a fictional narrative. The film is based on a 1975 book of the same name by N. Richard Nash, with creative liberties taken in the adaptation. Cry Macho broke a 10-year streak of Eastwood directing movies based on true stories, making it a notable departure for the acclaimed filmmaker.

Clint Eastwood's Cry Macho is one of the latest films by the acclaimed actor and director, but is it based on a true story? Clint Eastwood tends to make movies focusing on narratives that actually happened, leading many to assume that Cry Macho followed this same pattern. The film is completely realistic, further supporting this assumption. So, here is everything we know about the accuracy of the story behind Cry Macho.

New Amsterdam’s Mike Doyle Started in Law & Order: Svu
Image
When Mike Doyle first appeared on NBC's New Amsterdam as Dr. Iggy Frome's husband, Martin, viewers likely recognized him but may not have been able to place why. Doyle has had notable roles in everything from Shameless to Oz to 2011's A Gifted Man and has appeared in films like Green Lantern (2011) and Jersey Boys (2014). Alongside New Amsterdam, Doyle was in 10 episodes of 2018's The Accidental Wolf as husband Brad to Kelli O'Hara's Katie, but his big claim to fame is on another NBC show viewers may or may not remember seeing him on.

On procedural shows like Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, lab technicians can occasionally stick around, but often only for a season. In Season 5, Episode 7, "Choice," a new lab tech arrived and made such an impression that he became a recurring guest star through not just the rest of the season but the next five.

Clint Eastwood Got His Start in Universal Horror Movies
Image
Movies have become a hub for artists to express themselves in ways that touch millions and millions over decades. Because of this, many actors and actresses have become household names thanks to the characters they've brought to life. One of the best examples of this is Clint Eastwood, best known for his roles in countless Westerns. But like many other famous actors, he actually got his start in the horror genre with Universal's Classic Monsters.

The classic monsters Universal Pictures introduced ranged from icons like Dracula and Frankenstein's Monster to more niche creations like The Invisible Man and The Wolf Man. And these movies affected the industry as a whole, bringing a shared universe together long before properties like the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They even gave a young actor like Clint Eastwood a chance.

HBO and Max New Releases: June 2023

HBO Max is no more. In its place are…HBO and Max. Warner Bros. Tony predictions: Will Sondheim’s ‘Into the Woods’ or ‘Sweeney Todd’ win Best Musical Revival or cancel each other out?
Image
This year’s Tony race for Best Musical Revival has two Stephen Sondheim shows (“Into the Woods” and “Sweeney Todd”) in contention. Will one of them win or will they cancel each other out? Let’s go over both of them.

“Into the Woods” combines several fairy tales and explores the consequences of the characters’ quests. The main storyline focuses on a childless baker and his wife as they go into the woods to break a spell set upon them by a witch. There they run into various classic fairy tale characters, all before revealing what happens after “happily ever after.”

The original production won three Tonys in 1988 for Best Actress (Musical) for Joanna Gleason, Best Musical Book for James Lapine, and Best Original Score for Sondheim. Meanwhile, Best Musical that year went to “The Phantom of the Opera,” which wound up with six other awards. The last remounting of...
