Brainstorm Media has acquired North American rights to Tolga Karaçelik’s “Psycho Therapy: The Shallow Tale of a Writer Who Decided to Write About a Serial Killer.” The dark comedy, which stars Steve Buscemi, premiered at last year’s Tribeca Film Festival where it won an Audience Award. It will be released in cinemas and on VOD in April.
The movie is about a struggling writer. In the midst of a divorce, he befriends a retired serial killer, who becomes his marriage counselor by day, and killing counselor for his next book by night. The film is Karaçelik’s English-language directorial and screenwriting debut. In addition to Buscemi, it co-stars John Magaro (“Past Lives”) and Britt Lower (“Severance”).
“Tolga Karacelik has crafted a film full of twists and turns (and an all-star cast) that will keep people on the edge of their seat throughout,” Michelle Shwarzstein, Brainstorm Media CEO, said in a statement.

'The Shallow Tale of a Writer Who Decided to Write About a Serial Killer' Review - A Joyous Mouthful
With one of the longest titles a film is ever likely to have, The Shallow Tale of a Writer Who Decided to Write About a Serial Killer, is, in a single word, uproarious. This, of course, is counterintuitive, not only given the film's name and storyline, but from its overall appearance, which is, for the majority of its runtime, quite bleak. The movie's writer and director, Turkish filmmaker Tolga Karaelik, creates a laugh-out-loud film paired with dark subject matter such as murder, divorce, and kidnapping. It stars Steve Buscemi, John Magaro, and Britt Lower as three very unlikely collaborators in what ends up being the funniest, and most violent, marriage counseling session you'll ever witness. The film's dazzling writing, directing, and editing, in conjunction with the outstanding performances and undeniable chemistry between each of its leads, makes The Shallow Tale one you'll want to watch again and again.

Britt Lower, John Magaro, and Steve Buscemi are standout performers in The Shallow Tale. Suzie, played by Britt Lower, brings the most humor and excitement to the film. The movie's focus on the crumbling marriage between Suzie and Keane overshadows Keane's writing journey.
Some may find the title of The Shallow Tale of a Writer Who Decided to Write About a Serial Killer misleading. It's not entirely inaccurate, but beneath the film's initial premise as described in the title is a different movie, one less about the process of writing and more about a marriage falling apart and how it might be saved over one out of control night.

“Psycho Therapy: The Shallow Tale of a Writer Who Decided to Write About a Serial Killer” marks the English-language debut of Turkish director Tolga Karaçelik. Its initial premise, about an unhappily married couple, morphs and flips on its head until it transforms into something resembling the movie’s title, though it’s only about “a writer writing about a serial killer” in the most nominal sense. That one element gives way to an even more amusing conceit, involving crossed-wires and mistaken identities, but its wires continue to cross, until the movie mutates beyond recognition, refusing to stick to any one idea for longer than a couple of scenes.
John Magaro plays Keane, a meek but self-absorbed novelist who refuses to admit (or even recognize) that his marriage is on the rocks. His wife Suzie (Britt Lower) initially comes off as heartless and cold in her admonishment of him and in her demands for a divorce.

Turkish director Tolga Karaçelik, who made a splash in the U.S. with absurdist comedy “Butterflies,” is getting ready to premiere his first English-language film, “The Shallow Tale of a Writer Who Decided to Write About a Serial Killer,” in which the offbeat serial killer in question is played by Steve Buscemi.
The New York-set film, which takes Karaçelik’s comic streak in a new direction, will launch on Saturday from the Tribeca Film Festival. “The Shallow Tale” also features John Magaro (“Past Lives”) as Keane, a struggling writer who befriends the “retired” serial killer, who eventually becomes Keane’s unlikely marriage counselor as he goes through divorce proceedings with his straight-laced wife (Britt Lower), as well as the muse for his next book.

The June skies are clear as the Tribeca Festival gathers indie filmmakers from around the globe with a large slate of features and shorts, music, games, TV, audio storytelling and a major addition this year in De Niro Con, a tribute to the prolific actor and Tribeca co-founder.
The fest moved from April to June in part for the weather but that can’t be taken for granted — last year’s edition opened to a city blanketed with acrid smoke from Canadian wildfires as Mayor Eric Adams handed De Niro the key to the city at a press conference and Tribeca unveiled De Niro Con. Fan events and screenings with star power from Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsese, Billy Crystal, Ben Stiller, David O. Russell, Christopher Walken and others will unspool over the last four days of the festival.
Other retrospectives and reunions will see Steven Spielberg screen and discuss his...
