Disney’s feature take on its classic 1937 toon Snow White finally is hitting theaters this weekend after weathering a tormenting, blown-out-of-proportion tabloid controversy. Domestic is looking to land between a $45M-$50M opening with another $55M abroad.

The reported $270M feature production came under fire on social for the casting an actress of Latina-Polish descent — Zegler — in the lead role. She pushed back against the criticism. She also makde some actress’ remarks about the original film and slammed Donald Trump and his supporters back in November. It’s believed that some of this sentiment is in the ether, which has pushed down ticket sales. It also led Disney to pare down its world premiere on Saturday, which excluded mainstream press from the carpet — despite the studio putting on a full extravaganza pre-party with food, free candy, afternoon appletinis, faux gem digging and Zegler taking selfies in the crowd.

The co-stars hit the red carpet together at the film’s L.A. premiere on Monday (March 17) at the Vista Theatre in Los Angeles.

Also in attendance were co-stars Kate Elliott and Beulah Koale, as well as director and co-star Flying Lotus.

Flying Lotus' new film Ash recently debuted at the South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival, and it turned out to be a hit with the critics. With its early reviews, the film has garnered one of the highest Rotten Tomatoes scores of Aaron Paul's career.

Currently,Ash has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 91%, comparable to Paul's revered films Eye in the Sky (95%), El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie (92%), and American Woman (89%). The movie, which also stars Eiza Gonzalez, is part science fiction and part psychological thriller. The result is an entertaining watch for most critics, with Ash praised for its acting, storytelling, and visuals.

"Ash feels outside of time," says Sharai Bohannon of Horror Press. "It’s somehow futuristic but also heavily influenced by the sci-fi horror that came before it. So, nods to John Carpenter’s The Thing and Ridley Scott’s Alien feel at home in this film.

Compared to Kuso, Flying Lotus’s scatological debut feature, Ash is a much more conventional effort for the beatmaker turned filmmaker. Upon waking up on an isolated interstellar outpost, Riya (Eiza González) finds herself in near darkness, and with no memory of what happened to her. As she yanks a makeshift weapon free from the chest of one of her dead comrades, the film evokes countless video games that have themselves pledged allegiance to the likes of Alien, The Thing, and Event Horizon.

Even as Ash morphs into something of a two-hander with the arrival of Brion (Aaron Paul), between the giallo-esque lighting and John Carpenter synths, Ash continues to wear its influences on its sleeve. Jonni Remmler’s script can hardly even be bothered to seed distrust between Riya and Brion, and it provides only the bare minimum of insight into what life at the outpost used to be...

Flying Lotus has directed the experimental comedy Kuso and the Ozzy’s Dungeon segment of the horror anthology V/H/S/99, and next up for the rapper and filmmaker (who is a.k.a. Steven Ellison) is the sci-fi thriller Ash, starring Eiza González (Baby Driver) and Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad). Grace Caroline Currey impressed DC fans as Mary Bromfield in Shazam! and got to suit up as Mary Marvel in Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Her work in that sequel received widespread praise and left many eager to see her play another superhero after the franchise was scrapped.

Flying Lotus may be best known as a musician, winning a Grammy for producing Kendrick Lamar’s masterpiece To Pimp a Butterfly, but in the cinephile community, he is known as one of horror cinema’s most exciting sickos. His sophomore feature, Ash, offers every ounce of aesthetic style that fans will expect, but it is squandered on an uninteresting and derivative script.

The 2025 SXSW Film & TV Festival kicked off Friday, March 7 in Austin with world and North American premieres of movies in 11 sections, TV shows in three sections and several short film and virtual reality programs.

This year’s festival launched with opening-night film Another Simple Favor reteaming Paul Feig, Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick, with other notable world premiere titles including Chad Hartigan’s The Threesome, Kate Mara‘s two entries The Astronaut and The Dutchman (the latter also starring André Holland), the Ben Affleck-Jon Bernthal sequel The Accountant 2, the Nicole Kidman-starring Holland and Death of a Unicorn starring Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega.

Oh, so Flying Lotus played Electronic Arts’s Dead Space video games. Right? It’s one of the many influences in the musician-turned-filmmaker’s Ash, a science fiction dreadbomb dealing in claustrophobia and doomy vibes. He’s messing around in a familiar Event Horizon and Pandorum sandbox—with nods to Robert Rodriguez’s Earth-set The Faculty—but there’s enough gnarly cosmic horror imagery to set Flying Lotus’ zero-gravity mystery apart.

The sci-fi horror genre only has so many setups filmmakers can choose from, but as Flying Lotus shows, that doesn’t mean new films have to be creatively bankrupt.

People tend to overuse the term “mind-blowing” when hyping sci-fi movies, but in the case of Flying Lotus’ visually audacious “Ash,” the word feels apt. Weak on plot but pretty as a sunset (on the whole human race?), “Ash” opens with a shot of the cosmic turmoil swarming inside the brain of an astronaut far, far away from Earth, then pulls back abruptly, zooming out through her pupil to reveal the look of pure panic on the face of sole survivor Riya Ortiz (Eiza González). Cue a shock montage of all her crewmates, each with their head crushed in or blown open.

How’d they all die? Most unpleasantly. Fast-forward 90 minutes, and the final image is another head-spinner. Between those extremes, “Ash” is surprisingly conventional, especially coming from the maniac who conceived 2017 Sundance disrupter “Kuso” and the scatological game-show segment “Ozzy’s Dungeon” from “V/H/S/99”: a colorful, giallo-style homage...

Usually, when someone says a movie is “all vibes,” they mean it as an insult. But vibes can accomplish some wonderful things: Just ask Alejandro Jodorowsky, Dario Argento, Amy Seimetz, Panos Cosmatos, and now Flying Lotus. Born Steven D. Bingley-Ellison, the musician and record producer claims his place in the pantheon of vibes-based filmmakers with “Ash,” a pummeling psychedelic sci-fi freakout that one doesn’t watch so much as experience.

Don’t let the green mist tinged with white lightning and rotating cosmic orifices fool you, however: Ingesting psychedelic drugs is not recommended before watching this film. Like Brandon Cronenberg’s “Possessor,” “Ash” makes extensive use of cut-ins that violently tear through the frame, jarring the audience with nightmarish imagery that’s disarming under normal circumstances and probably soul-searingly terrifying...

Aliens have invaded SXSW with multiple new titles befitting the theme at this year’s festival, and director Flying Lotus’ Ash certainly serves a cosmic horror that’s out of this world.

Eiza González stars as astronaut Riya, who wakes up on a distant planet with no memory of who she is, how she got there or why her entire crew has been slaughtered. When her crew mate Brion (Aaron Paul) answers a distress call from their orbiting space station, things start coming into focus as the computer warns her of an unusual lifeform.

The movie wastes no time getting into the action as we open on a bloodied Riya waking up with exactly the same amount of info as we have about the bloody chaos surrounding her. The base’s computer system malfunctions, building the tension through sound and lighting as the oxygen supply rapidly drops.

Riley's second feature is said to revolve around a group of shoplifters who take on a powerful fashion tycoon. However, González says the logline doesn't begin to capture the scope of the film: "Nothing that you read will be able to transport you to what it really is."...

Flying Lotus is sharing “Oxygene,” the first song on the soundtrack of his self-scored directorial debut, Ash. The space horror finds Aaron Paul, Eiza González, and Flying Lotus himself – born Steven Ellison – in new, sci-fi worlds of psychological and physical terror. “Oxygene” begins dark and foreboding, buzzy synths that sound like bugged-out footsteps before shakers and organ-like riffs give it a glimmer of hope.

James Cameron knows how to push emotional buttons. Titanic is, once the iceberg hits, an unabashed weepie. The lava thumbs-up at the end of Terminator 2 will have the hardest hearts melted down to scrap. And Avatar and Avatar 2 are packed with devastating moments, from the destruction of Hometree, to the death – spoiler alert! – of Jake and Neytiri’s eldest son Neteyam in the sequel. But by the sounds of it, the third Avatar movie – the upcoming Fire And Ash – might be the most emotional of the bunch, even when viewed in unfinished form.

Case in point: Cameron’s own wife, Suzy Amis Cameron, saw a version of the film from late last year, and – per her filmmaker husband – was completely overwhelmed with emotion. “My wife watched the whole thing from end to end — she had kept herself away from it and I wasn’t showing her bits and pieces as we went along.

Get ready to sit back and relax for a while when Avatar: Fire and Ash hits theaters.

Filmmaker James Cameron recently revealed to Empire magazine that the upcoming third installment in his Avatar franchise will actually be longer than 2022’s Avatar: The Way of Water, which ran three hours and 12 minutes long.

“In a nutshell, we had too many great ideas packed into act one of movie 2,” Cameron explained. “The [film] was moving like a bullet train, and we weren’t drilling down enough on character. So I said, ‘Guys, we’ve got to split it.’”

The director added, “Movie 3 will actually be a little bit longer than movie 2.”

However, Avatar might not mind the film’s length as the first two films are some of the biggest theatrical releases to date, with 2009’s Avatar holding the spot as the highest-grossing film of all time, while The Way of Water holds the record for third.

We’re less than one month away from the Overlook Film Festival, an annual celebration of all things horror. And while not every film has been announced, we do have at least a tease of what the four days of terror will bring. Check out some of what you can expect below:

Opening the 2025 Overlook Film Festival will be Christopher Landon’s Drop, which has the following plot: “A widowed mother, on her first date in years, arrives at an upscale restaurant where she meets her handsome suitor. But their chemistry begins to curdle when she is terrorized by a series of anonymous drops to her phone.” Landon will be one of many directors in attendance with their new films. Others include Natasha Kermani with Abraham’s Boys, Eli Craig with Clown in a Cornfield, Joseph Kahn with Ick, Brett Whitcomb & Bradford Thomason with The Spirit of Halloweentown, and many more.

In recent years, SXSW has overlapped with the Oscars, forcing a major film and TV festival to take a backseat to Hollywood’s biggest night. But this year, the stars aligned for cinephiles with an interest in both events, as SXSW is starting a week after the Academy Awards. The Overlook Film Festival has announced this morning their first wave of programming for the upcoming 2025 edition, taking place April 3 – April 6 in New Orleans, Louisiana. During an interview with Stuff Nz, Cameron, who has been in New Zealand putting the finishing touches on Fire and Ash during post-production, shared that he's shown a cut of the upcoming film to selected people to gauge early feedback. According to Cameron, the people he showed Fire and Ash to were so impressed by the movie that they believe it's the peak installment of the trilogy. “I've shown it to a few selected people and the feedback has been it's definitely the most emotional and maybe the best of the three so far," he said.

The Red Sonja reboot has secured a distributor with a release window confirmed. That's great news for fans of the comics and sword-and-sandal films.

Signature Entertainment acquired the rights to release the Red Sonja reboot in the UK and Ireland. Per Deadline, the film will premiere in late 2025 after spending two years in post-production. "Red Sonja epitomizes the kind of film we're looking for at Signature – an epic story in a fantasy-laden world with a strong commercial feel to its execution, which made it immediately appealing to us," Signature Entertainment's Acquisitions Manager Begüm Kayacan Parodi said. "We're looking forward to introducing UK and Irish audiences to Matilda Lutz's sword-swinging huntress later this year." Production company Millennium Media is still looking for a distributor for Red Sonja in international markets.

Speaking with Empire, Fire and Ash producer Ben Procter ramped up the anticipation for the threequel by claiming the film's upcoming end battle will blow away what fans saw in the last sequel, The Way of Water. According to Procter, Fire and Ash's third act will see a battle that makes what happened in The Way of Water seem like "nothing but a skirmish" when it happens. In Fire and Ash, Procter said, “We’re going to see an airborne and water-borne battle for the ages, as the Pandoran forces and Rda clash in a really interesting environment.”
