Disney’s feature take on its classic 1937 toon Snow White finally is hitting theaters this weekend after weathering a tormenting, blown-out-of-proportion tabloid controversy. Domestic is looking to land between a $45M-$50M opening with another $55M abroad.
The reported $270M feature production came under fire on social for the casting an actress of Latina-Polish descent — Zegler — in the lead role. She pushed back against the criticism. She also makde some actress’ remarks about the original film and slammed Donald Trump and his supporters back in November. It’s believed that some of this sentiment is in the ether, which has pushed down ticket sales. It also led Disney to pare down its world premiere on Saturday, which excluded mainstream press from the carpet — despite the studio putting on a full extravaganza pre-party with food, free candy, afternoon appletinis, faux gem digging and Zegler taking selfies in the crowd.

Flying Lotus' new film Ash recently debuted at the South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival, and it turned out to be a hit with the critics. With its early reviews, the film has garnered one of the highest Rotten Tomatoes scores of Aaron Paul's career.
Currently,Ash has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 91%, comparable to Paul's revered films Eye in the Sky (95%), El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie (92%), and American Woman (89%). The movie, which also stars Eiza Gonzalez, is part science fiction and part psychological thriller. The result is an entertaining watch for most critics, with Ash praised for its acting, storytelling, and visuals.
"Ash feels outside of time," says Sharai Bohannon of Horror Press. "It’s somehow futuristic but also heavily influenced by the sci-fi horror that came before it. So, nods to John Carpenter’s The Thing and Ridley Scott’s Alien feel at home in this film.

Compared to Kuso, Flying Lotus’s scatological debut feature, Ash is a much more conventional effort for the beatmaker turned filmmaker. Upon waking up on an isolated interstellar outpost, Riya (Eiza González) finds herself in near darkness, and with no memory of what happened to her. As she yanks a makeshift weapon free from the chest of one of her dead comrades, the film evokes countless video games that have themselves pledged allegiance to the likes of Alien, The Thing, and Event Horizon.
Even as Ash morphs into something of a two-hander with the arrival of Brion (Aaron Paul), between the giallo-esque lighting and John Carpenter synths, Ash continues to wear its influences on its sleeve. Jonni Remmler’s script can hardly even be bothered to seed distrust between Riya and Brion, and it provides only the bare minimum of insight into what life at the outpost used to be...

Grammy Award Winner and filmmaker Flying Lotus (Kuso, V/H/S/99) is back this week with Ash, a trippy sci-fi survival horror movie that brings the gore. To prove it, we have exclusive new images from the film that tease some of the stomach-churning horror ahead.
Ash opens in theaters this Friday, March 21, before heading to Shudder sometime later this year.
Eiza González (Baby Driver) and Aaron Paul (“Breaking Bad”) star in Ash, alongside Iko Uwais (The Raid: Redemption), Beulah Koale, and Kate Elliott.
In the sci-fi horror film, “On the mysterious planet of Ash, Riya (González) awakens to find her crew slaughtered. When Brion (Paul) arrives to rescue her, an ordeal of psychological and physical terror ensues while Riya and Brion must decide if they can trust one another to survive.”
Flying Lotus also composed the score for the film and directs from a script by Jonni Remmler.

Grace Caroline Currey impressed DC fans as Mary Bromfield in Shazam! and got to suit up as Mary Marvel in Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Her work in that sequel received widespread praise and left many eager to see her play another superhero after the franchise was scrapped.
Wonder Woman remains a popular suggestion and there are plenty of fans who would love Currey to suit up as the Dcu's Diana Prince.
Talking to The Direct about the fan castings, the actor certainly didn't dismiss the notion. "That's a loaded question. That's been very nice to see people say that," Currey said. "I think getting to be in the universe at all has been such a lottery kind of feeling that I don't know if I got to come back in any capacity, that'd be wild."

Flying Lotus may be best known as a musician, winning a Grammy for producing Kendrick Lamar’s masterpiece To Pimp a Butterfly, but in the cinephile community, he is known as one of horror cinema’s most exciting sickos. His sophomore feature, Ash, offers every ounce of aesthetic style that fans will expect, but it is squandered on an uninteresting and derivative script.
Ash Review
Ash follows a woman who wakes up as the sole survivor of a vicious attack on her interplanetary mission as she sets out on a mission to discover what happened to the rest of her crew. It’s an unholy conglomeration of every sci-fi horror trope you can think of, from Alien to The Thing, resulting in a film that is very difficult to get invested in.

The 2025 SXSW Film & TV Festival, which concludes on Saturday, featured a time-traveling Rv, a disemboweling unicorn, a transracial surgery and credible testimony that extra-terrestrials exist. Here’s what rose to the top, and what failed to take flight.
Homicidal Unicorns and a Singing Matthew McConaughey Stole the Show
SXSW has distinguished itself among the top film festivals with its Headliners section, a lineup of star-driven, studio-backed, crowd-pleasing premieres that thrill SXSW audiences and help launch the films into their wide releases — from “Bridesmaids,” “21 Jump Street,” and “A Quiet Place” to “Us,” “John Wick 4” and “The Idea of You.”
This year, only one Headliner fully fit the bill: The gory horror comedy “Death of a Unicorn,” starring Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega, had the audience laughing, screaming and cheering along with its story of a pair of homicidal fantasy creatures dispatching a über-wealthy family in the Canadian wilderness.

The year 2024 was a significant one for horror movies, highlighted by a successful awards season and dominance by the genre at the box office. Notably, the Oscars recognized four films within the genre, signaling a growing appreciation for horror’s artistic merit.
The Academy Awards have historically marginalized horror films, with The Silence of the Lambs in 1991 a notable exception. Its “Big Five” sweep — Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, and Adapted Screenplay — remains a unique achievement. However, the recent nominations of films like The Substance and Nosferatu indicate a growing willingness to acknowledge the genre, signaling a potential change in the awards landscape.
The ‘Silence of the Lambs’ cast and production winners hold their Oscars at the 64th Academy Awards in 1992. The film won five Oscars.
Horror at the Academy Awards was first recognized in 1974, when William Friedkin’s groundbreaking The Exorcist received a remarkable 10 nominations including Best Picture. While it won just two awards,...

Fans were a little disappointed when Westworld was cancelled after Season 4. However, Aaron Paul, who joined the show as Caleb Nichols in Season 3, says a fifth installment might still be on the cards.
Although the Westworld creators had a story planned for Season 5, HBO pulled the entire series from its Max streaming platform after the show was cancelled. At SXSW 2025, Grae Drake speaks to Eiza González, Aaron Paul, and Flying Lotus about their new sci-fi action horror film Ash. They all have a dislike of Daylight Savings, they're all wary of space food, and all agree that visually Flying Lotus can't be beat. He creates an atmosphere on his set unlike any other that took the actors to an entirely different place. And Aaron Paul comments on how much the support of his fans worldwide means to him.
In Ash, a woman wakes up on a distant planet and finds the crew of her space station viciously killed. Her investigation into what happened sets in motion a terrifying chain of events.

Pokémon Horizons has been a great friend to fans, but now it seems the anime is ready to move on. After all, The Pokémon Company just released a new poster teasing the next Pokémon anime. The image, which shows older versions of its heroes, as well as a new character, shows us our first look at Pokémon: Mega Voltage. The new anime promises to follow the Laqua storyline that's currently being wrapped up in PokémonHorizons. And given this new anime's shocking timeskip, its poster promises there are lots of goodies in store including the return of Mega Evolution.
Rumors of this particular anime were leaked earlier this week, and those rumors have now been confirmed with the poster's official reveal. This reveal of the next anime comes just as Pokémon Horizons' first major story is hitting its climax, with an epic showdown between the heroes and Gibeon's Zygarde set for Friday's episode.

Flying Lotus leaves behind the abstract surrealism of feature debut Kuso in favor of a more conventional narrative in sophomore effort Ash, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t bear his stamp of gnarly horror. What Ash lacks in story originality, it makes up for in vibrant imagery, visual worldbuilding, and visceral horror in this gnarly sci-fi freakout movie that could double as a visual survival horror concept album thanks to Flying Lotus’ immersive earworm score.

Aaron Paul's new sci-fi/horror movie Ash just held its premiere at this year's SXSW Film Festival, meaning the first reviews have now dropped online. The Breaking Bad star leads alongside The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare's Eiza Gonzalez in the seriously trippy new movie. Ash is directed by Steven D. Bingley-Ellison, who is better known by his stage name Flying Lotus. The first trailer for the movie was released a month ago, and the footage was already brain-meltingly brilliant enough. But, according to the first reviews, the full movie is a surreal horror film that you have to experience as soon as humanly possible.
After the first reviews from its SXSW premiere, Ash currently sits at a perfect score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. According to the reviews, Ashexpertly blends its sci-fi setting with horror tropes that Flying Lotus carefully subverts. Jamie Broadnax of Black Girl Nerds wrote, "Ash...

Oh, so Flying Lotus played Electronic Arts’s Dead Space video games. Right? It’s one of the many influences in the musician-turned-filmmaker’s Ash, a science fiction dreadbomb dealing in claustrophobia and doomy vibes. He’s messing around in a familiar Event Horizon and Pandorum sandbox—with nods to Robert Rodriguez’s Earth-set The Faculty—but there’s enough gnarly cosmic horror imagery to set Flying Lotus’ zero-gravity mystery apart.
The sci-fi horror genre only has so many setups filmmakers can choose from, but as Flying Lotus shows, that doesn’t mean new films have to be creatively bankrupt.
Eiza González stars as Riya, an astronaut who regains consciousness on a distant planet to find her crew slaughtered. She has no immediate recollection of what happened as she wanders around the blood-smeared station she calls home. After a few brief and frightening memories flash back, her supposed rescuer arrives...

Plot: An astronaut (Eiza Gonzalez) wakes up on a distant planet and discovers her entire crew has been killed. Suffering from amnesia, she soon meets a fellow astronaut (Aaron Paul) who says he was part of her team, but she’s unsure whether she can trust him.
Review: Space horror is a reliable sub-genre of the sci-fi universe. Alien is the king of the castle as far as it goes, but the vastness of space is always a good place to set a horror flick, and it’s a genre that I have a particular weakness for. Review: Space horror is a reliable sub-genre of the sci-fi universe. Alien is the king of the castle as far as it goes, but the vastness of space is always a good place to set a horror flick, and it’s a genre that I have a particular weakness for. “Ash” is a new live-action science fiction horror-thriller, directed by Flying Lotus, starring Eiza González and Aaron Paul, releasing March 21, 2025:
“…on a distant planet, an astronaut wakes up to find the entire crew of her space station has been killed. ‘Riya’ has no memory of herself or of the situation in which she finds herself, jogged by only quick, nightmarish flashes of her partners and their mission.
“Feeling paranoid, she must decide if she can trust the man, whom she supposedly knows, sent to rescue her after he received a distress signal from her location.
“‘Brion’ claims enigmatically that they have a ‘purpose’ together, while the computer keeps warning her about an ‘unusual’ lifeform…”

Check out the theatrical poster for Flying Lotus' upcoming cosmic horror, Ash. The flick had its world premiere at SXSW yesterday. Rlje Films and Shudder are handling the theatrical and streaming releases, starting in cinemas on March 21st! On the mysterious planet of Ash, Riya awakens to find her crew slaughtered. When a man named Brion arrives to rescue her, an ordeal of psychological and physical terror ensues while Riya and Brion must decide if they can trust one another to survive. Lead actors Eiza González and Aaron Paul feature in the new version. There is likely no mistaking that this movie will be of the icky, goopy variety. If you're going into this one thinking 'fun for the whole family' one, adopt...

People tend to overuse the term “mind-blowing” when hyping sci-fi movies, but in the case of Flying Lotus’ visually audacious “Ash,” the word feels apt. Weak on plot but pretty as a sunset (on the whole human race?), “Ash” opens with a shot of the cosmic turmoil swarming inside the brain of an astronaut far, far away from Earth, then pulls back abruptly, zooming out through her pupil to reveal the look of pure panic on the face of sole survivor Riya Ortiz (Eiza González). Cue a shock montage of all her crewmates, each with their head crushed in or blown open.
How’d they all die? Most unpleasantly. Fast-forward 90 minutes, and the final image is another head-spinner. Between those extremes, “Ash” is surprisingly conventional, especially coming from the maniac who conceived 2017 Sundance disrupter “Kuso” and the scatological game-show segment “Ozzy’s Dungeon” from “V/H/S/99”: a colorful, giallo-style homage...

Editor’s Note: This review was originally published during the 2025 SXSW Film & TV Festival. “Ash” opens in theaters Friday, March 21.
Usually, when someone says a movie is “all vibes,” they mean it as an insult. But vibes can accomplish some wonderful things: Just ask Alejandro Jodorowsky, Dario Argento, Amy Seimetz, Panos Cosmatos, and now Flying Lotus. Born Steven D. Bingley-Ellison, the musician and record producer claims his place in the pantheon of vibes-based filmmakers with “Ash,” a pummeling psychedelic sci-fi freakout that one doesn’t watch so much as experience.
Don’t let the green mist tinged with white lightning and rotating cosmic orifices fool you, however: Ingesting psychedelic drugs is not recommended before watching this film. Like Brandon Cronenberg’s “Possessor,” “Ash” makes extensive use of cut-ins that violently tear through the frame, jarring the audience with nightmarish imagery that’s disarming under normal circumstances and probably soul-searingly terrifying...

Aliens have invaded SXSW with multiple new titles befitting the theme at this year’s festival, and director Flying Lotus’ Ash certainly serves a cosmic horror that’s out of this world.
Eiza González stars as astronaut Riya, who wakes up on a distant planet with no memory of who she is, how she got there or why her entire crew has been slaughtered. When her crew mate Brion (Aaron Paul) answers a distress call from their orbiting space station, things start coming into focus as the computer warns her of an unusual lifeform.
The movie wastes no time getting into the action as we open on a bloodied Riya waking up with exactly the same amount of info as we have about the bloody chaos surrounding her. The base’s computer system malfunctions, building the tension through sound and lighting as the oxygen supply rapidly drops.

While at SXSW to promote her new science fiction movie Ash, Eiza González spoke with Collider's Perri Nemiroff about another upcoming project that's out of this world: Boots Riley's latest sci-fi satire, I Love Boosters. Riley's second feature is said to revolve around a group of shoplifters who take on a powerful fashion tycoon. However, González says the logline doesn't begin to capture the scope of the film: "Nothing that you read will be able to transport you to what it really is."...

Flying Lotus is sharing “Oxygene,” the first song on the soundtrack of his self-scored directorial debut, Ash. The space horror finds Aaron Paul, Eiza González, and Flying Lotus himself – born Steven Ellison – in new, sci-fi worlds of psychological and physical terror. “Oxygene” begins dark and foreboding, buzzy synths that sound like bugged-out footsteps before shakers and organ-like riffs give it a glimmer of hope.
“Oxygene” is one of 27 songs on the Ash soundtrack. A trailer dropped last fall. The film will premiere at SXSW on March 11 and will be followed...

James Cameron knows how to push emotional buttons. Titanic is, once the iceberg hits, an unabashed weepie. The lava thumbs-up at the end of Terminator 2 will have the hardest hearts melted down to scrap. And Avatar and Avatar 2 are packed with devastating moments, from the destruction of Hometree, to the death – spoiler alert! – of Jake and Neytiri’s eldest son Neteyam in the sequel. But by the sounds of it, the third Avatar movie – the upcoming Fire And Ash – might be the most emotional of the bunch, even when viewed in unfinished form.
Case in point: Cameron’s own wife, Suzy Amis Cameron, saw a version of the film from late last year, and – per her filmmaker husband – was completely overwhelmed with emotion. “My wife watched the whole thing from end to end — she had kept herself away from it and I wasn’t showing her bits and pieces as we went along.

Avatar 3 will be extra pleasing with a new tribe being introduced, and the director has dropped hints about its run time. Scroll below for the deets.
Both the Avatar movies are among the top 5 highest-grossing films of all time. The first film was released in 2009. It was a groundbreaking phenomenon because of its use of 3D technology, motion capture, and CGI, which revolutionized the industry. The wait for the second film was over a decade and worth it. The Way of Water was released in 2022. The two films explored two different biomes of Pandora, and a new Fire tribe and a new...

Get ready to sit back and relax for a while when Avatar: Fire and Ash hits theaters.
Filmmaker James Cameron recently revealed to Empire magazine that the upcoming third installment in his Avatar franchise will actually be longer than 2022’s Avatar: The Way of Water, which ran three hours and 12 minutes long.
“In a nutshell, we had too many great ideas packed into act one of movie 2,” Cameron explained. “The [film] was moving like a bullet train, and we weren’t drilling down enough on character. So I said, ‘Guys, we’ve got to split it.’”
The director added, “Movie 3 will actually be a little bit longer than movie 2.”
However, Avatar might not mind the film’s length as the first two films are some of the biggest theatrical releases to date, with 2009’s Avatar holding the spot as the highest-grossing film of all time, while The Way of Water holds the record for third.

We’re less than one month away from the Overlook Film Festival, an annual celebration of all things horror. And while not every film has been announced, we do have at least a tease of what the four days of terror will bring. Check out some of what you can expect below:
Opening the 2025 Overlook Film Festival will be Christopher Landon’s Drop, which has the following plot: “A widowed mother, on her first date in years, arrives at an upscale restaurant where she meets her handsome suitor. Others include Natasha Kermani with Abraham’s Boys, Eli Craig with Clown in a Cornfield, Joseph Kahn with Ick, Brett Whitcomb & Bradford Thomason with The Spirit of Halloweentown, and many more.

In recent years, SXSW has overlapped with the Oscars, forcing a major film and TV festival to take a backseat to Hollywood’s biggest night. But this year, the stars aligned for cinephiles with an interest in both events, as SXSW is starting a week after the Academy Awards. The move ensures the festival will have the film world’s attention all to itself — and there’s much to see.
This year’s SXSW Film and Television Festival features everything an attendee could hope for. There are huge studio premieres that will bring A-listers to the iconic yellow step-and-repeat and a deep roster of quality indie films just waiting to be discovered.
Headliners include big-budget sequels like “Another Simple Favor” and “The Accountant 2;” highly anticipated genre films like Christopher Landon’s “Drop” and Flying Lotus’ “Ash,” and good old-fashioned star-powered originals like the Nicole Kidman-led “Holland” and the...

From feeling tarantulas crawling on my face and attending a midnight séance to meeting amazing creators and seeing movies such as Talk to Me and Evil Dead Rise conjure up scares on the big screen, these past several years I've been fortunate to experience the thrills and chills awaiting horror fans in the Big Easy at The Overlook Film Festival. There’s no question that SXSW has outdone itself this year in terms of genre programming. The festival is kicking off its 31st year this Thursday in Austin, Texas, unleashing a dizzying slate of premieres and events, with a surprising emphasis on horror, sci-fi, and thrillers.
SXSW 2025 has filled its Headliner section, a programming track dedicated to the biggest gala film events and premieres with star power, with highly anticipated genre titles that include Flying Lotus‘s sci-fi horror movie Ash, Christopher Landon‘s ode to Brian De Palma in upcoming thriller Drop, and A24’s nightmare comedy Death of a Unicorn. But there’s so much more to discover beyond the big red carpet premieres. Not even the Midnighter category, which is dedicated to genre film, can contain the sheer volume of offerings.

Masashi Kishimoto wrote some of the finest villains in Naruto. They are deeply flawed and complex in terms of their motives and backstories. From Pain to Sasori, the series gave us well-written and layered antagonists that embodied a menacing personality.
However, Kaguya Otsutsuki is an exception to that, especially with how she was introduced. Her being overpowered is one of the criticisms that is often thrown around like confetti. Fans, however, may have been too quick in their judgment of her character’s origins.

More often than not, people tend to overlook Kishimoto’s brilliance, and they might have done the same in this case. Fans may have ignored the foreshadowing aspect of the series, which makes the character’s path more coherent.
Kaguya’s foreshadowing in Naruto
From Jiraiya to Tsunade, most characters in Naruto draw inspiration from Japanese folklore.

“We in the theater business are really focused on attendance, because that drives so much other stuff,” said Greg Marcus, describing how initiatives like Discount Tuesday lure people off the couch and out to the movies.

Avatar: Fire and Ash promises an emotional rollercoaster for fans of the titular sci-fi franchise, showing the Sully family and Pandora like never before. Director James Cameron further raises expectations for the anticipated blockbuster by suggesting "a few people" have seen the movie and have high marks for the Avatar threequel.
During an interview with Stuff Nz, Cameron, who has been in New Zealand putting the finishing touches on Fire and Ash during post-production, shared that he's shown a cut of the upcoming film to selected people to gauge early feedback. According to Cameron, the people he showed Fire and Ash to were so impressed by the movie that they believe it's the peak installment of the trilogy. “I've shown it to a few selected people and the feedback has been it's definitely the most emotional and maybe the best of the three so far," he said.

Not to be confused with David Bruckner‘s 2020 film of the same name, The Night House is based on the 2023 novel by Jo Nesbø, whose work was previously adapted in 2007’s The Snowman.
Tremblay and Paul will play different aged versions of the protagonist, Richard, in the psychological horror film. It’s set to shoot this summer in Álava, Spain.
In the wake of his parents’ recent death, high schooler Richard has been sent to live with relatives in the remote town of Ballantyne. One day, during an innocent prank call in a phone booth, Richard shockingly witnesses his classmate violently get sucked into the phone receiver and disappear without a trace.
Police suspect Richard to be responsible, and no one believes his story except Karen, a fellow teenage outsider. As Richard...

Avatar: Fire and Ash is the final go-round for the titular adventure franchise in Pandora before moving to Earth for future sequels. And, if one producer of the upcoming blockbuster is to be believed, the film's run in Pandora will end in a bang with a climactic battle "for the ages."
Speaking with Empire, Fire and Ash producer Ben Procter ramped up the anticipation for the threequel by claiming the film's upcoming end battle will blow away what fans saw in the last sequel, The Way of Water. According to Procter, Fire and Ash's third act will see a battle that makes what happened in The Way of Water seem like "nothing but a skirmish" when it happens. In Fire and Ash, Procter said, “We’re going to see an airborne and water-borne battle for the ages, as the Pandoran forces and Rda clash in a really interesting environment.”

Avatar: Fire and Ash will once again explore previously unseen areas of Pandora. Along with the hostile Ash Clan, the Mangkwans, Jake and Neytiri will meet the mysterious Wind Traders (a.k.a. the Tlalim Clan).
According to Empire Online (via SFFGazette.com), they're a group of Na'vi who "traverse the lush moon on gigantic jellyfish-like creatures," with Wonder Woman star David Thewlis set to play their leader, Peylak.
"They’re upbeat, happy, colourful," Avatar: Fire And Ash costume designer Deborah L. Scott says of the group. "And when they come into our movie, everyone’s excited to see them. It’s like the circus is in town."
"Originally the cloak was a little more rugged, a little more rustic," she continued, sharing a first look at Peylak which you can check out below. "But as all the clans developed, Jim [Cameron] said, 'I just don’t think it’s grand enough.
