Ron Howard's Eden, which was previously announced as Origin of Species, will begin production in Australia next month, and it has just added two of the buzziest names in Hollywood as part of its ever-expanding and impressive-looking cast. Joining the project alongside the previously announced Jude Law, Ana de Armas, and Daniel Brühl are Oscar nominee Vanessa Kirby and Sydney Sweeney have replaced Alicia Vikander and Daisy Edgar-Jones in the cast after the latter two were forced to drop out.

Though they never completely went away as a genre, survival thrillers are clearly having A Moment. Ron Howard, though, has been ahead of the game for sometime, developing ideas for his own thriller, Eden for 15 years. He already has Jude Law, Ana De Armas and Daniel Brühl aboard the film, and is added Euphoria's Sydney Sweeney and :a[Mission: Impossible]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/mission-impossible-dead-reckoning-part-one/' }'s Vanessa Kirby to the cast.

The film, per Deadline, is based on an unsolved mystery that unfolded on a remote island in the Galapagos. And it charts the lengths humans will go in pursuit of happiness.

Oscar-winning director Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind) is planning to head into production on his latest film, a survival thriller formerly known as Origin of the Species and now going by the title Eden, at the end of November – and with just weeks to go before cameras start rolling, Howard has rounded out his lead cast with Vanessa Kirby (Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning) and Sydney Sweeney (Euphoria).

Kirby and Sweeney are taking over roles that were previously assigned to Alicia Vikander and Daisy Edgar-Jones. Their co-stars include Jude Law (Sherlock Holmes), Ana de Armas (Knives Out), and Daniel Bruhl (The Alienist). In the upcoming Netflix anime Delicious in Dungeon, dark fantasy, high adventure, gourmet cooking, and a splash of humor come together like a perfect pot of stew, and judging by the reception of the original manga, the streaming giant might have another hit in its growing stable of exceptional animated series.

Delicious in Dungeon is a manga by Ryoko Kui that has been in circulation in Japan under the Enterbrain imprint, a subsidiary of Kadokawa, since 2014, and in the United States by Yen Press since 2016. In August 2022, it was officially announced that an anime had been greenlit with Studio Trigger set to produce. Grant Morrison and Liam Sharp have just released their latest comic project, and it's breathtaking in its scope. The epic short Eden’s End manages to tell the secret history of man and superman in a mere fifteen pages.

Morrison launched a Substack newsletter at the beginning of 2022, where they have proceeded to provide annotations of their previous work in addition to running short comics and other projects. Morrison is now using the platform to launch their latest comics work with their Green Lantern collaborator Liam Sharp: a series of fifteen-page stories Morrison has dubbed “Hollywood pitch comics” in a densely-compressed format of square-shaped pages roughly the size of a 12” LP record. The series is called Xanaduum Presents, and Eden's End is the first installment: a sci-fi/fantasy parable about the origins of humanity itself.

Daft Punk’s Thomas Bangalter has traded in his helmet for a baton. Today, April 7th, the French musician released his first solo work since the group’s breakup, an orchestral album called Mythologies.

The project was initially commissioned in 2019 by choreographer Angelin Preljocaj for a ballet of the same name. The end result is a 90-minute composition that “reveals a love of Baroque music and hints to traces of American minimalism,” according to a press release. Take a listen below.

After 28 years together, Daft Punk formally called it quits in February 2021. In a recent interview, Bangalter shed light on the reason for their breakup, saying he became increasingly uncomfortable with the convergence of music and technology.

With its list of new releases for April 2023, Netflix is is hosting a 30th anniversary special for a very important pop culture franchise.

April 19 sees the arrival of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always, a special that will celebrate 30 years of Power Rangers. This won’t just be your standard reunion show, however, but a full blown story in itself. Netflix’s description reads: “When Rita Repulsa returns, the Power Rangers are the only ones who can stop her! But after 30 years, can the team still be the heroes the world needs?” Ai yi yi, indeed!

Other TV options this month on Netflix include the Steven Yeun-starring road rage series, Beef, on April 6 and the Keri Russell-starring The Diplomat on April 20. It’s been an interesting year for cinema thus far, and that won’t be slowing down in April.

There’s Leonor Will Never Die (7 April) – a meta love letter to Filipino cinema, led by the marvellous Sheila Francisco – and also Lola (7 April), a Second World War time travel drama whose low budget shows that you can do impressive things with very little. Albert Serra’s Pacifiction (21 April) is an intoxicating descent into danger and, as with the Spanish filmmaker’s previous films, it may be divisive, but demands to be seen – even if just to form your own opinion.

Ben Affleck directs and stars in Air (7 April), which follows Nike’s revolutionary partnership with a young Michael Jordan. Affleck’s receiving some of the best reviews of his career for the film. Meanwhile, grisly horror Evil Dead Rise (21 April) has generated word-of-mouth hype since its premiere at South by Southwest.

Thomas Bangalter — one half of the duo Daft Punk, who announced their split in 2021 — has released the first track, “L’Accouchement” from Mythologies, his upcoming debut solo album. It arrives on April 7 via Erato/Warner Classics.

The French musician, who announced the split of Daft Punk with fellow member Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo in 2021, has also unveiled an illustration of his face for the first time, obtained by Variety as part of the announcement.

Exclusive: Paris-based company Indie Sales has sold Angry Annie, French director Blandine Lenoir’s latest feature, to a host of key territories ahead of the film’s world premiere at the Locarno Film Festival on Thursday.

The film has been sold to Benelux (Cinéart), Canada (Axia Films), Indonesia (Falcon Pictures), Italy (I Wonder Pictures), Israel (Lev Cinemas), South Korea (Ak Entertainment), Switzerland (Agora Films), and Taiwan (Av-Jet).

Inspired by true events, the film takes place in France in 1974. When she accidentally becomes pregnant, Annie, a working mother of two teenagers, meets with the Movement for the Liberation of Abortion and Contraception (Mlac), a group of doctors and women who perform illegal abortions in the public eye, practicing a free, safe, and respectful method. Gradually Annie will join their battle, which will bring a new meaning to her life.

Laure Calamy stars alongside Zita Hanrot and India Hair.

In a statement, Constance Poubelle, Senior Sales and Marketing Executive at Indie Sales said: “Angry Annie is more than ever an important film in this struggling time for women’s rights. If you picture a “Lord of the Flies”-style summer camp from the “Great British Bake Off” producers, it might look something like their new reality show for U.K. broadcaster Channel 4, “Kids in the Wild.”

The six-part series from Love Productions and “Love Island” co-producer Motion Content Group is fashioned as a wholesome production that transports a cooped-up pandemic generation “back to an idyllic old-fashioned summer and the carefree abandon of Swallows and Amazons, away from their parents for the first time.”

The show will convene a diverse, 20-member group of 9 to 11 year olds from across the country who will spend part of their summer living in nature, without “the shackles” of adult supervision and rules.

Cryogenically frozen prisoners wake up thousands of years in the future in the new graphic novel Eden. Written by Matthew Arnold and illustrated by Riccardo Burchielli, Eden premieres the first of its five chapters today on comiXology Originals before being released in print on July 12th from Dark Horse Books, and as a special treat for Daily Dead readers, we've been provided with preview pages and an essay from Arnold about the graphic novel's true crime inspiration.

True Crime Inspiration

A theme of Eden involves judgement and punishment, particular the often harsh or unfair judgement by the media and the public. At the heart of the book is a crime — the kidnap and murder of Senator Croft’s son, Jacob. The handling of this event in the story takes its inspiration primarily from the notorious Jon Benet Ramsay true crime case.

Italy’s “The Impossible She,” Spain’s “Detective Touré,” South Africa’s “Paradys” and France’s “Hormones” feature among 15 drama series projects selected for the Series Mania Forum’s 2022 Co-Pro Pitching Sessions.

One of Europe’s most prestigious TV competitions, with titles competing for a €50,000 grand prize, this year’s Sessions form part of the Forum, which runs March 22-24.

Olivier Bibas is to join the French pay TV giant Canal Plus as head of its fiction label Création Originale. As such, Bibas will be responsible for Canal Plus’ French drama and international co-productions. He starts on Feb. 14.

Bibas will report to Gérald-Brice Viret, managing director, French TV Channels and Programs at Canal Plus Group, who said Bibas’ “vision, recognized expertise and talent will be invaluable in proposing new major series with worldwide appeal.”

Fabrice de la Patellière, who has held the position of head of drama at Canal Plus since 2002, will now move into production and partner with Studiocanal, under the direction of Anna Marsh, to develop ambitious French and international series, for both television and platforms.

In a statement, Canal Plus said it would like to thank De la Patellière for “his tremendous contribution to the numerous successes” of Création Originale, which he launched over 15 years ago with Arielle Saracco.

One of the joys of world cinema is that it opens your eyes to places and people that you might otherwise have never encountered. In an age where we can be connected to anyone at any time in any place, it’s surprisingly easy to still overlook films from smaller countries. Fortunately, through festivals like the All Asian Independent Film Festival, hidden gems such as “The Road to Eden” have less chance of flying under the radar. Directed by Bakyt Mukul and Dastan Zhapar Uulu, the film is a beautiful ode to Kyrgyzstan and to the country’s lost traditions.
