A new spy movie starring Michael Fassbender and Pierce Brosnan has pulled off a box office feat. Fassbender is a versatile actor who is perhaps best known for playing the young Magneto in the X-Men prequel movies beginning with 2011's First Class. However, in addition to starring in big-budget genre movies such as the superhero franchise, Assassin's Creed, and Prometheus, he has starred in a variety of dramas such as Shame, A Dangerous Method, Song to Song, Steve Jobs and 12 Years a Slave, the latter two of which earned him Oscar nominations.
While Pierce Brosnan does not have any Oscar nominations under his belt, he does have ample experience in the spy genre, having starred in four James Bond movies between 1995 and 2002. He played the iconic superspy in GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough, and Die Another Day, stepping into the role after the two-movie tenure...

Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes’true love first blossomed poetically on screen. Gosling often defines his performances through understatement, from a vintage heartthrob in The Notebook to a brooding protector in what this author thinks is the best film ever, Drive, while still featuring in blockbusters like the pink phenomenon, Barbie. Mendes, now happily embracing the beauty of motherhood and entrepreneurship, also dedicated herself to acting, delving into roles like the complicated mistress of Denzel Washington's character in Training Day to a cynical gossip columnist in Hitch, showing she also had the range to tackle both dramatic and comedic contexts.
However, there’s a strong case that their finest work came when they shared the screen in the same movie: Derek Cianfrance's 2012 morality tale The Place Beyond the Pines. The ambitious, multi-generational film brought the couple together off-screen while testing the actors with roles that demanded intensity. Michael Fassbender is one of those actors who can just take on any role, completely transform himself, and make you forget you’re watching an actor. Whether he’s playing a mutant mastermind in X-Men, a tech visionary in Steve Jobs, or a fearless warrior in 300, he has proven time and again that he’s got serious acting chops.

Nobody was surprised (probably) when the massive, star-studded episode of "Saturday Night Live" celebrating the show's 50th anniversary mostly leaned on old standby sketches and concepts. There were some exceptions — including a perfect new Digital Short about how everybody who's ever worked at "SNL" has both anxiety and Ibs — but it's ultimately not shocking that the episode featured yet another musical ode to New York City's most disgusting aspects centered around John Mulaney.
From the man who brought you "Diner Lobster," "Airport Sushi," and "Port Authority Duane Reade," among others, we got "New York 50th Musical," and it's safe to say that Oscar nominee Adam Driver would only don a hot dog costume for something this great. After David Spade and Pete Davidson, the latter of whom note that they're "the same age" and just moved to New York in 1975 from the same small town, visit Mulaney's all-knowing hot dog vendor in Times Square,...

Exclusive: HanWay Films has expanded its classics library after being appointed to represent The Cohen Film Collection.
The library of Cohen Media Group’s founder, Charles S. Cohen, comprises more than one hundred restored classic titles spanning from the silent era to the present day, including The Buster Keaton Collection and The Merchant Ivory Collection.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed and Cohen Media Group is the owner of HanWay, having acquired the company in 2022.
Late last year Charles Cohen’s media group hit choppy waters when the company was forced to sell multiple assets including British arthouse exhibitor and distributor Curzon to Fortress Investment Group. The company was acquired in a foreclosure auction involving multiple Cohen assets, including the Landmark cinema chain. Fortress had lent Cohen $534M but sued him last year for default. Cohen acquired Curzon in late 2019 amid a buying spree by the U.S. real estate developer.

Right now, South Park fans across the world are flocking to their local Aldi for some unusual Christmas shopping — let’s hope they stay away from the discount Ambien.
December is upon us, which means that it’s time for everyone to promote non-denominational, politically correct “holiday season” messaging in their schools and small towns. Around this time of year, right-wing news outlets begin their annual tradition of raging against the War on Christmas, pointing to generic, inoffensive, holiday-branded consumer products from mega-corporations like Starbucks as evidence that there is a conspiracy to obscure the true reason for the season. But, thankfully, a growing number of South Park fans have found a way to fight back against mass-produced idolatry and remind everyone of the real meaning of Christmas: high-fiber diets.

Michael Fassbender's new Paramount+ political thriller series The Agency is a tonally perfect followup to his 2023 David Fincher movie The Killer. Created for American television by Jez and John-Henry Butterworth, The Agency is an adaptation of the 2015 acclaimed French thriller series The Bureau created by Eric Rochant. Fassbender leads the cast of The Agency alongside Jeffrey Wright, Richard Gere, Katherine Waterson, John Magaro, Saura Lightfoot-Leon, and Jodie Turner-Smith.
Fassbender is a 2-time Oscar nominee best known for his titular role in 2015's Steve Jobs and his supporting role in the Best Picture winner 12 Years a Slave. He is also a part of two major film franchises, X-Men and Alien. His other notable film roles include Assassin's Creed, Macbeth, Kneecap, Shame, 300, Jane Eyre, and Inglourious Basterds. In television, Fassbender appeared in Band of Brothers before starring in The Agency.
New episodes of The Agency release every Friday on Paramount+.

Alien: Romulus (Fede Alvarez)
It’s a dire, inhospitable environment, wherein corporate interests can give way to ghoulish monstrosities, and those just trying to navigate the chokehold of capitalism are doing their best to survive. In a way, Fede Alvarez’s Alien: Romulus may be the most meta Alien film to date. No stranger to playing in others’ sandboxes, the Evil Dead helmer is, at first glance, an encouraging fit for the sci-fi horror franchise. Like the original, 2017’s Alien: Covenant––an underrated high point for these films––was at its peak when threading its headier notions with gleefully mean-spirited cynicism towards its human subjects. Alvarez has that same kind of nasty streak in him, and much of Romulus’ mandated fan service...

Plot: During the WW2 bombing of Britain, a young mother (Saoirse Ronan) sends her young son, Georgie (Elliott Heffernan), off to the countryside for his own safety. Angry at being separated from his mother and used to being taunted for his mixed-race heritage, he jumps off the train to the countryside and embarks on an odyssey through a bombed-out London to reunite with his family.
Review: Blitz wasn’t what I expected from director Steve McQueen. One of the most potent directors in the business, Hunger, Shame, 12 Years a Slave, Widows and Small Axe were all dazzlingly well-directed, but there was nothing in any of them which made me think McQueen had a family film in him. British artist-turned-filmmaker Steve McQueen is tired of being defined by other people. Since he broke out with 2008’s Irish prison drama “Hunger” — along with Michael Fassbender — each film has been completely different from the last. “Shame” (2011) was a provocative portrait of a sex addict (Fassbender), while Best Picture winner “12 Years a Slave” (2013) turned Lupita Nyong’o into an Oscar-winning star and grossed $187.7 million worldwide. “Widows” (2018) was a less successful foray into an American genre picture. And back in Britain, his 2020 “Small Axe” limited TV series and 2023 documentary “Occupied City” earned raves.

If you believe that sex addiction is a ‘guy thing’ or that it’s a fun-filled, nonstop orgy of pleasure and fun, all you need to do is watch the opening scene of Thirstygirl. This is where we first meet Charlie – inside a filthy public toilet. She is breathlessly zooming into a photo of a naked man, sending suggestive selfies and frantically Googling gangbang porn before she starts masturbating. There is nothing glamorous or alluring about the way first-time director Alexandra Qin portrays sex addiction. It’s a cold and sobering depiction of a compulsive and uncontrollable behaviour which, instead of satisfaction, brings shame to her lead character, straining her already fragile relationship with her sister as the two drive to a rehabilitation centre. Loosely based on her own experiences with sex and love, drug and alcohol addiction, Qin’s ten-minute proof of concept short dances between comedy and drama...

The director of Blitz talks us through the choices he made to create his dreamlike love letter to wartime London
1 — Don’t look back
None of my films have been similar to any other film, from Occupied City to Hunger to Small Axe to Shame. I mean, they are all very, very, very different. And that’s not just because I want to be different, it’s because the subject matter asks for it to be like that. It’s all about subject matter, and then making work that can enhance what I want to talk about. With Blitz, I wanted to look through a child’s perspective. Like a Brothers Grimm fairytale, it’s very dark, but it’s almost like a dream — and I think that seeing these things through a child’s perspective is what gives it a dreamlike quality. Because I’m putting you...

Few auteur filmmakers can tear through a viewers skin and grasp at their heart like writer-director Steve McQueen. After telling profoundly personal and UK-centric stories like Hunger and Shame, McQueen took home the Best Picture Oscar for his uniquely American tragedy, 12 Years A Slave. Now, the director is back on his home turf to share an intense tapestry of the human condition by way of London in World War II in his new feature, Blitz.

Lauren Mayberry, frontwoman of Chvrches, has announced details of her debut solo album: Vicious Creature will arrive in full on December 6th via Island Records. She’s also shared a new preview of the LP in the form of “Crocodile Tears,” and announced dates for a 2025 North American tour.
“Crocodile Tears” builds out the vibe established with previously released single “Something In the Air,” where Mayberry embraces catharsis. There’s a cheeky side to this new track, though: “Maybe I’m a villain, but I find it kind of thrilling when you cry,” she admits over bright synths and an upbeat drum keeping time.
In a statement about the project, Mayberry called out “the dark, physical, and subversive sides of femininity” as key influences over Vicious Creature as a whole, citing musicals like Cabaret and Chicago. “Crocodile Tears” is now the fourth track listeners can enjoy ahead of the full project in December,...

For writer/director Steve McQueen, “Blitz” is not just another war story.
The film is set during the Blitz in the 1940s, when the city of London was under the constant barrage of bombs from the German army. McQueen decided, though, to depict the horror of war through the eyes of a child named George, played by Elliot Heffernan, who was sent to the countryside for safety, by his mother, Rita, played by Saoirse Ronan.
“What was so important to me was to give a platform to things that were unseen that needed to be seen, that were true and needed to be told,” he says.
McQueen was inspired by a photo he came across while doing research for his anthology series “Small Axe,” of a small Black boy holding a suitcase. “It was just this sweet, beautiful, cute boy, and I though, Ok, I need to know your story,...

Inside Out 2's lineup of deleted emotions gets longer with new reveals from the head creatives. Writer Meg LeFauve dropped another candidate that didn't make the cut, and it's an emotion that would've paired well with Shame.
Writer Meg LeFauve revealed Inside Out 2 almost featured another villain: Schadenfreude, and he's unique because he causes other people to feel anxiety or shame. "Schadenfreude came in and out pretty quick," she told The Direct. "He was really fun. It's a German word for an emotion where you laugh at people's pain. Which is very teenager-y because you don't have a frontal lobe, and it's why we all laugh at pratfalls. Because somebody falls, we laugh; it's funny, right? But why does our brain do that? That's Schadenfreude. But he didn't make it."

Widows, the 2018 crime/thriller by director Steve McQueen, puts its female characters in the spotlight, as four women are forced to work together to clear the debt left behind by their deceased husbands' criminal activities. As well as an awesome premise, the movie stars a kick-ass cast, with Viola Davis, Michelle Rodriguez, Elizabeth Debicki, and Cynthia Erivo making up the titular group of heroines. But despite everything working in its favor, Steve McQueen was frustrated with the studio's lack of support towards the movie's feminist message, and wished the film's marketing was handled very differently.
Appearing at a Q&a at the London Film Festival (attended by MovieWeb), Steve McQueen recalled the frustrating marketing for Widows. The director didn't dive into all the specifics, but discussed the movie's poster. "Just look at the poster," McQueen said. It would be safe to assume that the poster for Widows would feature, well,...

For the past few years, Harridan Vodka has been celebrating Halloween with special “Paranormal Reserve” vodka, a limited edition batch of spirits aged in the real Conjuring House in 2021, the museum where the actual Annabelle doll resides in 2022, and America’s most haunted hotels last year. This year’s “Paranormal Reserve” has been announced!
On October 13, Harridan Vodka releases the fourth edition of its highly anticipated Paranormal Reserve, available at ShopHarridan.com. This year’s collection of 700 bottles rested for one month in two of America’s most haunted asylums: the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum in Weston, West Virginia and Pennhurst Asylum in Spring City, Pennsylvania.
The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum began construction in 1858, welcoming its first patients in 1864. Designed to hold 250 patients and offer world-class treatment, the Asylum eventually housed 2,400 patients in overcrowded and generally poor conditions – becoming the site of forced lobotomies, patient abuse, and murder.

Steve McQueen has long been upfront about his desire to make a musical; before Widows underwhelmed at the box office, it appeared likely that a passion project within that genre would be his next film. With each subsequent effort, it seems McQueen is slowly pushing himself into that wheelhouse, getting audiences to imagine what such a film in his distinctive style would look like––it’s similarly become apparent that it would be less reminiscent of the downbeat New York, New York sequence in Shame, more like the jukebox joys of his Small Axe entry Lovers Rock. For a filmmaker who was initially characterized as one obsessed with bleak character studies, he is increasingly finding an inner warmth through music, and in his large-scale WWII drama Blitz he utilizes the power of a communal sing-along in ways reminiscent of Terence Davies, cutting through the darkness with tunes wherever possible.

With their second studio album, Cool World, Chat Pile continue to channel despair and dejection through grimy guitar riffs and brutally honest lyrics, recounting the subjugation of the lower classes by the well-fixed. Throughout, the Oklahoma City fourpiece warns of a population that allows itself to be exploited. On opener “I Am Dog Now,” singer Raygun Busch reminds us that “everyone bleeds,” a sentiment that’s echoed later on “Masc,” on which he begs, “Don’t tell your friends I trust and bleed.”
Musically and lyrically, Chat Pile aggressively argues for a fairer distribution of power, to tear down the systems that perpetuate cycles of victimization. These messages can feel a bit broad, as the band eschews specificity in favor of brute force, with screeds that are driven home by Busch’s gravelly vocals and Luther Manhole’s prodding guitar.
Chat Pile’s narratives resonate most when they’re more fully developed.

Michael Fassbender has done a lot for his roles. Be it wearing a metal helmet and pretending that he could move things with his hand (in the X-Men films), or playing a British commando and former film critic who goes undercover as a German officer (Inglourious Basterds) – he has proven his excellence in it all, irrespective of however challenging the role may have been.

But perhaps his most challenging role must have been that of Thomas Rongen in the 2023 comedy-sport Next Goal Wins. This is because he had to ditch his vacation plans of racing sports cars to work on the movie. But the real credit for it, perhaps, goes to filmmaker Taika Waititi, considering how he was the one to tell Fassbender about the role and convince him for it in the first place!

Chvrches vocalist Lauren Mayberry is back with “Something in the Air,” her latest solo single that will appear on her forthcoming debut album Vicious Creature.
With a towering chorus and a bustling drum beat, “Something in the Air” is a cathartic, satisfying turn from Mayberry. A press release notes that in addition to ’90s icons Tori Amos, Pj Harvey, and Kathleen Hanna, Mayberry was also inspired by ’90s girl groups like All Saints and Sugababes for her solo album — “Something in the Air,” with its Britpop-adjecent arrangement, definitely feels aligned with the kind of open-hearted majesty that those girl groups boasted.
Meanwhile, Mayberry describes her frustration with conspiracy theories, rigid belief systems, and having a lack of control over the existential knowledge we crave. “You come up with your stories/ Conspiracy theories of why we’re all here/ Oh, I just want to be someone/ Someone who’s happy/ But why do you even care?...

Earlier this year, Christopher Nolan finally won Best Director at the Academy Awards. He picked up prize for helming Best Picture champ “Oppenheimer.” That victory came after five prior Oscar nominations, all of which ended in losses. Anyhow, Nolan has now finally been given the rewards his talents deserve. But there are still plenty of filmmakers who are overdue a Best Director gong. Scroll down for a list of five overdue filmmakers who could compete for the award at the 2025 Oscars.
Pedro Almodóvar
Almodóvar has five Oscar nominations and two victories to his name, so he may not seem overdue. He was nominated for Best Foreign Language Feature Film in 1989 for “Woman on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown” and in 2000 for “All About My Mother.” He won for the latter. He was then nominated for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay in 2003 for “Talk to Her,” winning for his writing.

Gillian Flynn is one of the most celebrated authors of her time. Her debut, Sharp Objects, was released in 2006 to enthusiastic reviews and several awards, including The Cwa's New Blood Fiction Dagger. An impassioned feminist, Flynn refused to write women as bland paragons of virtues. Instead, she wrote female characters as multi-faceted human beings, exploring their flaws in fascinating detail. Readers fell in love with Flynn's storytelling sensibilities, and her books have inspired several brilliant adaptations. As a screenwriter, she made waves with Gone Girl, a deeply disturbing thriller based on her own novel. Directed by David Fincher, psychodrama is easily Flynn's most recognizable work. However, Gone Girl is far from Gillian Flynn's only cinematic success.
In 2018, Gillian Flynn teamed up with noted auteur Steve McQueen to bring Widows to the big screen. Featuring a stacked cast including Viola Davis and Liam Neeson, this film aimed to blend popcorn thrills with heavy social commentary.

Warning! This article contains Spoilers for Bel-Air season 3.
The reimagined version of the 1990s sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Bel-Air, has a notable, diverse soundtrack that adds to the story, characters, and atmosphere. Bel-Air takes the characters viewers know and love from the Will Smith original series and gives them a twist in a darker, grittier, more dramatic version of Fresh Prince. Both shows have the same basic premise, but Bel-Air made multiple changes to The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
Bel-Air season 3 follows Will, Carlton, the rest of the Banks family, and their friends as they go on their first summer vacation since Will moved to Bel Air. This provides new energy, as the characters have a fun summer away from school, but that doesnt mean Bel-Air season 3 is without drama. Bel-Air season 2 ended with the DJ Jazzy Jeff and Will Smith song, Summertime, setting the stage for...

Steve McQueen’s World War II drama starring Saoirse Ronan, “Blitz,” will close the 62nd New York Film Festival, Film at Lincoln Center announced on Thursday. The movie will screen on October 10 at Alice Tully Hall in Manhattan, which will mark its North American premiere.
“Blitz,” which McQueen wrote, directed and produced, stars Ronan as a working-class single mother living in London during Nazi Germany’s 1941 blitzkrieg that began on September 7 and continued for 57 consecutive days and nights, killing almost 1,500 people.

More than 1,400 people have already predicted the Oscar nominations as of this writing, and as I recently wrote, the prison drama “Sing Sing” is the very early front-runner for Best Picture in our racetrack odds. But that film’s mastermind, Greg Kwedar, ranks fifth for Best Director. Instead, our early favorite for that coveted prize is Steve McQueen for “Blitz.”
“Blitz” has yet to be seen by critics or audiences, but its distributor and scheduling look mighty promising. It’s from Apple Original Films, the studio behind Best Picture winner “Coda” and Best Picture nominee “Killers of the Flower Moon.” It’s set to premiere at the BFI London Film Festival on October 9 ahead of a theatrical premiere on November 1 and a streaming premiere on November 22, smack dab in the middle of fall when most major film awards contenders are released.
The film’s subject matter is also typically awards-friendly.

As any UK-based film lover knows, the opening night gala of the London Film Festival is always one to keep an eye out for. In recent years, that coveted slot has been reserved for the likes of Emerald Fennell's scandalous scandalous Saltburn, Matthew Warchus' raucous Roald Dahl romp Matilda The Musical, and Samuel Jeymes' slick neo-spaghetti western The Harder They Fall. And this year's 68th BFI London Film Festival — which will run from Wednesday 9 October to Sunday 20 October — looks to have another doozy lined up for us. As announced by the BFI earlier today, kicking things off this year will be Oscar and BAFTA award winning writer-director Steve McQueen's Apple Original WWII drama Blitz, which stars Saoirse Ronan, Harris Dickinson, and nine-year-old newcomer Elliott Heffernan.
