As the calendar turns to fall, there’s been a lot of hand-wringing over the 2025 summer box office, which the New York Times reported was at its lowest point since 1981. The piece even got Giancarlo Esposito fired up when IndieWire asked him about the state of the industry following his Creative Arts Emmys win.
The Times analyzed how numerous blockbusters — almost all of them sequels or IP adaptations — fell short of their predecessors, and how only two weekends out of this summer surpassed $300 million cumulative at the North American box office.
All that is true, and yet the 2025 summer wound up not far off summer 2024. In fact, Comscore estimates that the box office for the year remains 3.9 percent ahead of the pace of where 2024 was at this same point last year. Even more curiously, 2025 had a dismal first quarter but bounced back with a vengeance in April thanks to “A Minecraft Movie” and “Sinners,...

This year's horror outing,Weapons, might have taken the number one spot at the box office, but it was the re-release of a 50-year-old classic that is drawing the headlines. Weapons climbed back up to the number one spot after having been dethroned by KPop: Demon Hunters the week prior. While there was hope that Darren Arronfosky's Caught Stealing or Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Coleman-led The Roses could score the last victory of the summer box office, the return of the original summer blockbuster swallowed up audiences' attention.
Variety reports that the 50th Anniversary re-release of Jaws, which was released in 3,200 screens, took the number two spot at the box office behind Weapons.

Sunday Am Writethru: After Saturday Am update… A pretty anemic Labor Day box office, which will get the summer box office to $3.67 billion in updated ComScore figures, which is -0.2% with last summer’s $3.677 billion.
We’ll get into the hows and the ways of summer later, but May was the only month that was up this year over last May, +76%, while June, July and August were down. There was this heavy pressure out there for the marketplace to deliver a $4 billion-plus May-Labor Day total, a figure which was constant for the summer domestic box office since 2012 except for 2017, the pandemic 2020, recovery 2021, 2022, 2024 and now this year. Interesting to note that this summer was ahead of 2022’s $3.4 billion, but behind 2017’s $3.85 billion (when the top movie was Wonder Woman).
As of right now, 2025 remains ahead of the 2024 box office by +4%, with a running cume for Jan.

First Blood. In 1983, Ted Kotcheff attended the Brussels Film Festival as a guest of honor; he was also there to promote the first Rambo movie, First Blood (1982), which would be the biggest commercial success of his directorial career. First Blood had originally been set for production in the early 1970s but was put through the developmental wringer for the better part of a decade, with a revolving door of potential leading men, attached directors, and multiple revisions of its survival-thriller plotline. It was an odd project for Kotcheff, then best known for the barbed social satire of Fun with Dick and Jane (1977) and North Dallas Forty (1979), broad, vulgar comedies that dealt with class warfare by means other than armed combat. “Freud says that guns are an extension of your dick,” scoffs Nick Nolte’s battered wide receiver Phil Elliott in North Dallas Forty, mocking the hardened gridiron ideal he’s...

Borderlands was one of the biggest box-office bombs of 2024. The adaptation of the acclaimed video game franchise grossed just $33 million in theaters and was absolutely trashed by critics. While speaking on The Town podcast, Borderlands director Eli Roth reflected on the failure of the movie, saying Covid played a big part.
“None of us anticipated how complicated things were gonna be with Covid,” Roth said. “Not just in terms of what we’re shooting, but then you have to do pick-up shots or reshoots, and you have six people that are all on different sets, and every one of those sets is getting shut down because the cities have opened up, and now there’s a Covid outbreak and it was just like… we couldn’t prep in a room together, I couldn’t be with my stunt people, I couldn’t do pre-vis, everyone’s spread all over the place.

Showdog Studio is launching three ’80s-set espionage shows within the same universe, with former covert operatives Nick Brokhausen and Jeff Miller joining as consultants, Variety can exclusively reveal.
The three projects are “The Puppet,” “American Ronin” and “The Bay Club.” “The Puppet” is described as a drama/thriller, while The procedural “American Ronin” tells the true story of two veterans disillusioned by the justice system. And “The Bay Club” is described as a “comedy of errors” about a bartender who gets accused of being a spy.
Full loglines for the shows can be seen below.
“We are excited about participating in these projects,” Brokhausen and Miller said in a joint statement. “The careers we chose and the lives we led have been depicted in dozens of movies and television shows, but rarely have they even come close to the truth. Loosely inspired by Mark Wahlberg and his pals' (mis)adventures in the entertainment industry, HBO's "Entourage" follows the rise of Vincent Chase to Hollywood superstardom, as well as the people within his orbit who are along for the rollercoaster ride. It never gets old watching Vince, E, Turtle, Drama, and Ari Gold becoming the architects of their own success or demise -- because if we're being entirely honest here, they thrive in chaos and can't help but set fires to bridges while they're still standing on them. After nine seasons and one feature film, viewers got to know these characters intimately -- inside and out -- but what happened to the cast of "Entourage" afterward?
That's a good question. Many of them went on to star in other shows and films, while others picked up new interests and passions. Then there are those who have found themselves in a spot of trouble with the law.

Dennis Quaid has cast doubt on the possibility of The Parent Trap ever getting a sequel. The 1998 film stars Quaid opposite the late Natasha Richardson, with Lindsay Lohan playing both of the children — Hallie Parker and Annie James — who were raised separately but are now trying to bring their parents back together. The way the film portrays family dynamics by separating identical twins at birth and never mentioning to one that they even have a twin, only to use them to reunite the parents, was viewed as controversial by many upon release. During a recent interview with Business Insider to talk about his new project, Happy Face, Quaid poured cold water on the possibility of him ever returning for a sequel to the 1998 film:
"There had been some talk, but it would be impossible to do now... No, and nobody else does. I don't think we'd have the heart for it.

In 2019, Joker won Joaquin Phoenix an Oscar, and in 2025, Joker 2 took the actor straight to a Razzie. A downfall no one could have predicted, yet here we are. What started as a career-defining moment with his Oscar-winning performance has now taken a sharp turn.

With the 97th Oscars just days away, celebrating the best movies and performances of 2024, the 45th Razzies is highlighting the worst of the worst. Among the films nominated for Worst Picture, Madame Web took home the top prize.
Among the other films nominated for the Golden Raspberry for Worst Picture were the highly anticipated sequel (and highly disappointing), Joker: Folie à Deux; Francis Ford Coppola's bizarre Megalopolis; big-budget (and bigger bomb) video game adaptation, Borderlands; and the Reagan biopic with Dennis Quaid. The Oscars will honor the best movie of the year this Sunday, but the infamous Razzie Awards have crowned the “worst” of 2024’s films.
Sony’s much-derided superhero film “Madame Web” has the (dis)honor of winning three Razzies, including worst picture, actress for Dakota Johnson and screenplay. “Joker: Folie à Deux,” another divisive superhero entry,” led with seven nominations and took home screen combo for Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga and prequel, remake, rip-off or sequel.
Francis Ford Coppola won for directing his big-budget epic “Megalopolis,” and star Jon Voight won supporting actor for the film — shared with his turns in “Reagan,” “Shadow Land” and “Strangers.” Coppola’s “Megalopolis” received six nominations, which was tied for second-most nods with “Madame Web,” “Borderlands” and “Reagan.”
The famed filmmaker responded to his Razzies on Instagram, saying “box office is only about money, and like war, stupidity and politics has no true place in our future.

Who says that winning a Razzie is a bad thing? After being named Worst Director for “Megalopolis,” legendary filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola fully embraced the dishonor and used the opportunity to criticize Hollywood for producing formulaic movies.
“So few have the courage to go against the prevailing trends of contemporary moviemaking,” he shared on Instagram on Friday.
“Megalopolis” was nominated for six Razzies altogether, including Worst Director, Worst Screenplay and Worst Picture. Alongside Coppola, Jon Voight took home the Razzie for Worst Supporting Actor.

Francis Ford Coppola is finding the razzle dazzle in his multiple 2025 Razzie Award nominations.
The “Megalopolis” auteur garnered six nominations for the futuristic feature — which ironically is also exactly how many Academy Award wins he has. The winners have just been announced for this year's Golden Raspberry Awards, also known as the "Razzies." They include a big "win" garnered for Francis Ford Coppola, but the famed director had a good sense of humor about the acknowledgment.
Per THR, the full list of Razzie winners was unveiled on Friday, just ahead of this year's Academy Awards ceremony. The annual nominations acknowledge the "worst" movies, filmmakers, and performances from the prior year, and there was no shortage of comic book adaptations up for big honors this year. However, when it came to Worst Director, Francis Ford Coppola got the win for his polarizing, big-budget feature Megalopolis. Taking to Instagram, Coppola commented on the revelation, noting how he nevertheless remains proud of the film, along with himself for taking some risks outside the standard Hollywood movie formula.

Start spreading the news – James Marsden wants to play Ol’ Blue Eyes himself, Frank Sinatra. So, would Marsden have the world of a string in the role or would he get under our skin?
Speaking with The Post, Marsden said the inspiration he gets from the ring-a-ding-ding era of singers has drawn him to such a project. “I’ve always loved emulating some of the old crooners, like Bobby Darin and Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. "Tombstone," from 1993, is the Wyatt Earp movie most people remember from the '90s, but it's hardly the only star-studded spectacle about the legendary marshal. A year later, "Wyatt Earp" came out, reuniting actor Kevin Costner with filmmaker Lawrence Kasdan, the director who first made him a charismatic cowboy in 1985's "Silverado." A love of the old west clearly stuck with Costner, who made his directorial debut with "Dances With Wolves," an epic about a Union Army Lieutenant (Costner) who goes native. If you haven't seen it, you've probably at least heard the plot of "Avatar" compared (unfavorably) to it. It won seven Oscars, including Best Picture and another for Costner as Best Director.
Covering more of Earp's life than just the famous gunfight at the O.K. Corral, "Wyatt Earp" came loaded with actors both familiar and new, as one would expect of an old Hollywood epic biopic. It...

Exclusive: Mena Suvari (American Beauty), Nick Stahl (Let the Right One In) and India Marie Cross (Wicked City) will star alongside Caleb Landry Jones in Down the Arm of God, an indie drama co-written by Jones and Peter Brunner, which is being introduced at EFM by Kinology.
Inspired by real stories, Down the Arm of God follows a young pastor through a harsh winter in a small Texas town, where his mission to help the homeless is faced with resistance by his congregation, exposing deep-seated prejudices and systemic failures.
Directed by Brunner, the film is rooted in real-life interviews and firsthand accounts of homeless individuals surviving on the streets. More than just a narrative about homelessness, Down the Arm of God is the result of years of direct collaboration with the homeless community — not just as subjects, but as partners and storytellers shaping the film with their lived experiences.

For those who decided that studio flicks like "Madame Web" or "Rebel Moon" were among the worst film of 2024, do I have some good news for you: they weren't even close. Some brave critics, or even braver explorers of the deep trenches of 2024's cinematic offerings may have much more dire stories for you, telling tales of Neil Marshall's dumb actioner "The Duchess," or Sean McNamara's embarrassing deification of Ronald Reagan in "Reagan." Have you even heard of the Nick Frost horror sitcom spoof "Krazy House," or the Netflix Biblical drama "Mary"?
The above-mentioned films all have one thing in common: they were voted among the ten worst films of the year, as gauged by Metacritic. Dennis Quaid is going from playing a slimeball in The Substance to a downright monster in the new Paramount+ series, Happy Face. The first teaser trailer for the true-crime show was just released, putting the Day After Tomorrow and Reagan star into the shoes of the real-life Happy Face Killer, Keith Hunter Jesperson. Though the prolific murderer's name is the source of the title, the harrowing drama is instead inspired by the story of his daughter, Melissa G. Moore, who discovered his identity when she was 15 and has since changed her name and tried to move on while keeping their relation a secret. However, the footage teases how her father finds a way to force himself back into her life despite being locked up for life without parole.

The 45th Golden Raspberry Awards (Razzies) will be held on March 1, 2025, to recognize the worst films of 2024. The nominees were originally set to be announced on January 16, but due to wildfires in Southern California, the announcement was delayed several times, eventually being revealed on January 21.
The nominees were chosen by 1,202 members of the Golden Raspberry Foundation, including movie fans, critics, and journalists. This year, many comic book adaptations received nominations, such as ‘The Crow,’ ‘Madame Web,’ ‘Joker: Folie à Deux,’ and ‘Kraven the Hunter.’
Several well-known actors, including Ariana DeBose, Cate Blanchett, and Joaquin Phoenix, were also mentioned, with Jon Voight getting a nod for his roles in four films. 2024 was really bad for superhero adaptations considering that the movies received eighteen nominations overall.

There are few awards shows more mean-spirited than the Razzie Awards, which each year join the awards season circus to ridicule the previous year’s most notable flops. 2024 gave the Razzies plenty of punching bags, as Joker: Folie a Deux, Megalopolis, and Madame Web were among the nominees for Worst Picture.
The other films rounding out the five Worst Picture nominees were video game adaptation Borderlands and Dennis Quaid vanity project/biopic Reagan. All five movies were also well-represented in additional categories including Worst Actor, Worst Actress and Worst Screen Combo.

Every year, Hollywood's most famous actors, directors, writers, and everyone in-between come together to celebrate the best films of the season. From The Academy Awards to the Golden Globes, it's a tradition that attracts the attention of an entire nation, and a good chunk of the world. But none of that means anything, because the true awards show announcement has finally arrived. The Golden Raspberry Awards, aka Razzie Awards, a notoriously unserious organization, has revealed the nominees for the 2024 show, and there are no surprises here.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, a slew of popular titles from 2024 were at the top of the most-nominated list for this year's Razzies. To no one’s surprise, Joker: Folie à Deux has the most nominations at seven, while Madame Web, Megalopolis, Borderlands, and Reagan are tied with six nominations for the 2025 ceremony. Additionally, to make matters worse, each film got a spot in the Worst Picture category.

The Razzie Awards spread the “wealth” this year, with five movies receiving a leading six nominations apiece, including in the unfortunate Worst Picture race: Borderlands, Joker: Folie à Deux, Madame Web, Megalopolis, and Reagan. Meanwhile, Unfrosted received four bids, while The Crow nabbed two.
“At the dawn of a dark era, the 45th Razzies remain ready to pounce,” declared the organization, which announced its bids one day after the inauguration of the 47th president and two days before the 2025 Oscars nominations. Fun fact: the ultimate “winners” of these categories will take home a “$4.97 gold spray-painted statuette.”
Oscar winners nominated for Golden Raspberries this year include Joaquin Pheonix (Joker: Folie à Deux), Cate Blanchett (Borderlands), Lady Gaga (Joker: Folie à Deux), Ariana DeBose (Argylle and Kraven the Hunter), and Jon Voight.

This year’s Academy Award nominations are set to be announced Thursday, after being delayed due to the devastating Los Angeles fires. As such, the annual Golden Raspberry Awards got to get ahead of the Oscars on Tuesday with their own crop of nominees, highlighting what its members believe to be the worst in film for 2024. “Joker: Folie à Deux” leads the field with seven nominations, while “Madame Web,” “Megalopolis,” “Borderlands” and “Reagan” are close behind with six nods apiece.
For “Joker: Folie à Deux,” the musical sequel to Todd Phillips’ Oscar-nominated DC Comics crime film “Joker,” landed nods in worst picture, director, screenplay and prequel, remake, rip-off or sequel. Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix are both up for worst actress and worst actor, respectively, as well as worst screen combo. All the stars are here! It’s that magical time of year when the biggest bombs in Hollywood gather to celebrate mediocrity at the Razzie Awards! This year’s presentation of The Golden Razzies finds multiple flops joining hands in the battle to escape accolades as the worst movies and performances of the year, including Joker: Folie a Deux, Madame Web, Megalopolis, Borderlands, and Reagan.
Borderlands, Megalopolis, Madame Web, Joker: Folie a Deux, and Reagan earned six nominations apiece, forming a Megazord of misguided executions on the silver screen. Not far behind are Jerry Seinfeld’s Unfrosted and The Crow swooping in with four nominations and two nominations, respectively. Aw, c’mon! The Crow wasn’t that bad! It was a tad uninspired, but at least they didn’t try to remake the original full-stop. Who’s with me? Bueller? Bueller? Oh, well.

It’s that time of year again, when Hollywood celebrates the year’s best motion pictures and performances and such. It’s also when the Razzie Awards turns all that on its ear.
In the running for Worst Picture at the 45th Golden Raspberry Awards — watch a video about them above — are vidgame adaptation Borderlands, musical sequel Joker: Folie à Deux, Marvel’s Madame Web, Freancis Ford Coppola’s passion project Megalopolis and presidential biopic Reagan.
Not coincidentally, all five are tied with six Razzie noms apiece. Those films’ helmers also are up for the Director “prize,” except for Reagan‘s Sean McNamara; Jerry Seinfeld took that fifth slot for his Pop Tarts comedy Unfrosted. The erstwhile sitcom king also is up for Worst Actor.

For decades, biographical films have been widely popular. Unlike other genres, biopics don’t always have a hard time standing the test of time. Tastes change, perspectives change, and the world changes, but a person’s story remains the same. The genre’s roots can be traced back to the Silent Era, where movies like Joan the Woman and The Life of Émile Zola were produced to educate the public about specific historical figures. These films normally presented their subjects in a sanitized, heroic light, allowing audiences to draw moral inspiration from them or aim to be more patriotic. With time, the approach changed.
By the ‘50s, the genre had evolved past mere glorification. Biopics started covering more controversial and morally flawed characters, allowing audiences to either get a clearer picture of key historical figures or an exaggerated yet entertaining perspective. Stories about world leaders are fun too, and 2024 gave...

Eugene Jarecki’s latest documentary film “The Six Billion Dollar Man,” which follows Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, will no longer make its debut at the Sundance Film Festival over what the director says are “unexpected developments” in the story. The movie will not be complete in time for its scheduled premiere in January.

Although Conclave is available to purchase at home, that hasn’t stopped it from achieving yet another impressive box office milestone. The film has been playing in less than 1,000 theaters since the final weekend in November, but still recently passed the $30 million mark at the domestic box office. Pair this with just under $6 million in international markets, and Conclave’s worldwide cumulative haul sits at $36 million on a $20 million budget. Despite not boasting a large price tag like some big blockbusters or even holding the same star power as other movies to premiere this year, Conclave has still managed to be one of the top 50 highest-grossing movies of the year domestically, recently passing Reagan and Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 to reach the #42 spot.

"Kindergarten Cop" is the quintessential 90s movie. It stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, the defining action star of the era, in a role few thought he could pull off, and it's directed by one of the most prolific filmmakers of the decade. The film also features a cast of young actors just before they went on to achieve major success. Now, we're looking back at the talent involved in "Ghostbusters" director Ivan Reitman's popular 1990 comedy to find out what they're up to these days, mainly because we love reminding ourselves just how old we are.
For those unaware, "Kindergarten Cop" follows Detective John Kimble (Arnold) as he goes undercover as a kindergarten teacher to bust a dangerous criminal. Like "Twins," Reitman's previous collaboration with Arnold, "Kindergarten Cop" blends comedy with drama, plus a hefty dose of surprisingly violent action, resulting in the perfect movie to show kids of all ages in...

For once, the top 10 movies on iTunes and Fandango aren’t close to a mirror image of each other. “Conclave” (Focus) and “Terrifier 3” (Cineverse), both successful October releases that exceeded theatrical expectations, were released on PVOD last week. They had the same availability yet vastly different results.
Edward Berger’s top award-contending “Conclave” took an immediate top spot at iTunes from its first day, yet is only #8 for the full-week in the Fandango top 10. Damien Leone’s “Terrifier 3” leads at Fandango, yet only briefly appeared during the week at iTunes (debuting at #3) before dropping off the list. It currently ranks #14.
The two charts can vary, but mainly in cases of different pricing. Fandango ranks by revenue accrued for a title, while iTunes goes by transactions. But in this case, they are the same price, making the different placements quite odd. In terms of relative position using daily charts for the week,...

After it failed to garner any traction at the box office, a 2024 Blumhouse movie is finding renewed success on Netflix. The indie studio best known for their horror output has enjoyed something of a mixed bag in the past couple of years when it's come to both the critical and commercial reception to their movies. For every record-breaking M3GAN and Five Nights at Freddy's, there's also been a near-franchise-destroying The Exorcist: Believer and lackluster Halloween Ends.
2024, in particular, has been something of a rockier year for Blumhouse. Having hoped to recapture the January release success of M3GAN, the horror short adaptation of Night Swim proved to be a critical misfire, albeit a modest box office success. The studio followed it up with four other releases, including the similarly panned Imaginary and the James McAvoy-starring English-language remake of Speak No Evil, which was a critical and commercial hit. There was...

“Raging Bull” vibes abound in actor-turned-writer/director Jack Huston’s first feature behind the camera. Huston reunites with his “Boardwalk Empire” co-star Michael C. Pitt for the 2023 out-of-competition Venice premiere “Day of the Fight.” The black-and-white drama follows a formerly renowned boxer Mike Flannigan (Pitt) now fresh out of prison and heading into his first fight since he was incarcerated.
Falling Forward Films — which this year released “Goodrich,” “Reagan,” and will soon debut “Los Frikis” — opens “Day of the Fight” in theaters on December 6. Below, IndieWire shares an exclusive clip from the film, which shows Mike asking his onetime best friend Patrick (John Magaro), now a Catholic priest, about the path toward redemption for his past. (The difference here from Martin Scorsese’s own black-and-white boxing classic being that of course Robert De Niro’s Jake Lamotta was seeking no redemption of any kind.)
