Critics Hated The Russo Brothers' The Electric State, But the Audience Score Tells a Different Story
Netflix's latest release, The Electric State, has all the qualities of a major blockbuster. It comes from a big studio, it has a stellar cast and critically acclaimed directors, and, despite the studio's reluctance for theatrical releases, it has a major budget.
However, The Electric State debuted with one of the worst ratings of the year. The sci-fi film debuted with an abysmal score of 10% on Rotten Tomatoes, a number that slightly increased to 14%, still a major disappointment. Following its official release on the platform, the audience score couldn't be more different, as it's over five times better than the critics' score.
While most of the critics called The Electric State a bad movie, the audience fully disagreed. Following its Mar. 14 release on Netflix, The Electric State has an audience approval score of 76%. While the score is not exactly a reason to start celebrating and greenlighting a sequel just yet,...

The critically panned Spider-Man spin-off (which ultimately brought Sony’s ill-thought-out shared universe to an end), Kraven the Hunter is ready to enact brutal vengeance on Netflix next month. The comic book action outing, which stars Kick-Ass and Bullet Train star Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the Marvel antihero, caused yet another divide between critics and audiences at the time, with the latter crowd no doubt excited to be able to stream Kraven at home.
Kraven the Hunter will be available to stream on Netflix in the United States on March 13, 2025, according to What’s on Netflix. Directed by J. C. Chandor from a screenplay by Art Marcum & Matt Holloway and Richard Wenk, Kraven the Hunter tells the origin of the Marvel character, much like Venom before it. Created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko for "The Amazing Spider-Man" #15 back in 1964, Kraven the Hunter follows the title character on a violent vendetta.

Tom Hardy's final appearance as Venom has become a hit on Netflix. Venom: The Last Dance ended the popular trilogy as a box office hit last fall, and is now crawling up the charts on Netflix, debuting at number one or in the Top 10 on the Netflix charts.
The Venom trilogy may not be remembered as being a hit with critics, but fans sure loved it. All three films have earned a worldwide total of nearly $1.8 billion since the first film opened in 2018. On Rotten Tomatoes, critics gave each film a negative rating, with 30% for the first, 58% for the second, and 40% for the third. However, fans gave each film an 80% to 84% fresh rating.

The Ranma ½ remake has done an amazing job at bringing the story back to life with its modern twist. While retaining the charm of older anime, the remake elevated Ranma ½ with polished animation and a new yet somewhat nostalgic art style. Even in 2024, the story of Ranma ½ remains hilarious and holds up well to modern-day standards.
Ranma ½ has one of the best romances in the shonen genre and the slowburn between Ranma and Akane is one of the highlights of the story. Season One of the remake brought to life many beloved scenes from the original and the manga.

Kraven the Hunter, set in Sony's Spider-Man Universe (Ssu), was in development for several years, even before the debut of Tom Holland as Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After years of delays, filming for the Sony movie finally commenced in 2022 in Europe. Kraven the Hunter seems to be the final film in Sony's live-action slate of upcoming Marvel movies centered on the origin stories of Spider-Man villains, which include the Venom trilogy, starring Tom Hardy in the titular role, Morbius, starring Jared Leto as the Living Vampire, and Dakota Johnson's Madame Web.
After the release of Morbius brought the second of Spider-Man's villains to the big screen, Sony was eager to get the ball rolling on Kraven the Hunter. While Sergei Kravinoff is one of Spider-Man's deadliest foes, he's also one of the most unique, with a fun premise that separates him from other villains of the webcrawler.

With the Sony Spider-Man Universe reportedly over, a seven-year-old tease from the Marvel Cinematic Universe could finally be capitalized on. With Kraven the Hunter's ending, it has been reported that the Sony Spider-Man Universe is over. This likely comes as a result of not only the commercial failures of several movies in the franchise but also due to their critical reception, with the ranking of Sony Spider-Man Universe movies often seeing them deemed inferior to their MCU counterparts.
Naturally, attention now turns to the other upcoming Spider-Man movies in development. Be it the final installment of the Spider-Verse trilogy or the McU's Spider-Man 4 story, the future of the Web-Slinger still looks promising despite the failure of Sony's live-action franchise. When looking at the McU's Spider-Man in particular, a tease that was first included in the franchise seven years ago may now be more possible than ever thanks to the conclusion of Sony's Spider-Man Universe.

“Kraven the Hunter” is a movie directed by J.C. Chandor starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson with Russell Crowe and Arianna DeBose. It is based on characters created by Steve Ditko and Stan Lee.
Marvel’s cinematic universe expands once again with the arrival of “Kraven the Hunter”, a spectacle that brings one of Spider-Man’s most formidable foes into the spotlight. This time, the villain steps out of the shadows to become the protagonist of his own story, offering viewers a glimpse into the primitive aspects of a character long known as Peter Parker’s nemesis.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson embodies Sergei Kravinoff, known in the comics as Kraven the Hunter. This Russian aristocrat-turned-hunter prides himself on capturing the most challenging prey, including superheroes. Kraven’s most famous storyline, “Kraven’s Last Hunt”, showcases his obsession with proving himself as the world’s greatest hunter by not only defeating Spider-Man but assuming his identity.

Kraven the Hunter is Sony Pictures' latest critical and commercial flop in its slate of "Sony's Spider-Man Universe" movies. While Venom: The Last Dance performed well enough this past October, this villain's movie is set to be a bigger flop than even Madame Web.
While this is by no means a good movie, that doesn't mean there aren't plenty of Easter Eggs for comic book fans. We're not sure how much love went into making this thing, but the filmmakers did find some unexpected ways to pay homage to the Sergei Kravinoff seen on the page.
In this feature, we're breaking down all the biggest references and cameos, including any ties to Spider-Man's world. Does the web-slinger appear and how many of his villains are part of Kraven's story? We delve into that and more.

Kraven the Hunter's box office numbers, from its opening weekend haul to its total worldwide gross, could solidify or reverse the decision to end the Sony Spider-Man Universe. The ending of Kraven the Hunter left the titular character off with the potential for future stories, but news broke before the movie's release that this may have been a futile decision. The future of Sony's franchise after Kraven is all but nonexistent, placing the 2024 film in an interesting position regarding its box office haul.
With Sony instead set to focus on other upcoming Spider-Man movies like Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse and the McU's Spider-Man 4, Kraven the Hunter has the task of proving this a wise decision or not. After all, Kraven the Hunter could become an unexpected hit for Sony, reigniting hope that the movies of the Sony Spider-Man Universe will continue to be produced post-2024. Of course, this...

The Leader is back for Captain America: Brave New World, including his infamously oversized head.
Speaking to Empire, Tim Blake Nelson discussed his return to Marvel for the first time since 2008's The Incredible Hulk, despite the film briefly teasing his transformation into Hulk's intellectual adversary. While no photos of the Samuel Sterns/Leader have been revealed yet, Nelson assured fans the villain's massive head will be free of computer effects, stating, "I requested that we do what we were going to do, practically. Which was a huge help, because I liked being able to feel the weight of the deformation on my head, rather than just wearing dots."

The cast of the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe movie is starting to be revealed. It is very well known at this point that Robert Downey Jr. will be playing a different role in the multiverse movie, and more recent reports suggest he'll be joined by some familiar faces.
Recently, it was reported that Steve Rogers actor Chris Evans would be appearing in Avengers: Doomsday, following his run as the McU's Captain America (and a Fantastic Four cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine). Now, Deadline has reported that Hayley Atwell has been tapped to appear in Avengers: Doomsday as well. She is expected to reprise her role as Peggy Carter, though it's still unclear if Evans will return as Steve Rogers, or if he'll be in a different role altogether, similar to Downey. In any case, the casting reports have been generating a lot of discussion with Marvel fans.

Sony is going to end the year with a long-in-the-works comic book movie in the form of "Kraven the Hunter." The film is centered on the famous "Spider-Man" villain of the same name, representing his live-action feature film debut. Aaron Taylor-Johnson, of "Kick-Ass" and "Tenet" fame, is on board as the title character, with villains such as Rhino and Chameleon also along for the adventure. So, is this one going to be a one-and-done? Or is the studio trying to set up more with this latest Marvel Comics adaptation?
In the realm of superhero movies, post-credits scenes are part of the territory. Sony, in particular, has utilized them pretty frequently with these "Spider-Man" spin-off films, including adding a couple of truly baffling credits scenes to 2022's "Morbius." Does that tradition continue here? We're offering up a spoiler-free guide so that viewers can be armed with the knowledge they need as they head to the theater.

An uneven, rollercoaster of a year at the box office is slowly coming to a close. Things couldn't have started worse for theaters in 2024 in the aftermath of last year's dual Hollywood strikes. The release slate through May was downright abysmal and things looked bad. Fortunately, monster hits like "Wicked" and "Moana 2" have helped ensure that we'll finish the year strong. So, can a new Marvel movie and a new adventure in Middle-earth help the cause as well? That's a complicated question but, all the same, "Kraven the Hunter" and "The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim" will both hit screens on the same day next weekend.
Sony's latest "Spider-Man" spin-off, "Kraven the Hunter" is currently looking at a debut in the $16 to $24 million range. Similarly, Warner Bros.' animated "Lord of the Rings" prequel is expected to bring in between $15 and $24 million on opening weekend,...

With the blockbuster success of Wicked and its continuous box office domination, Bailey has cemented his place as a leading man and a hero, both on television and on the silver screen.

The story attempted to take credit for Bailey’s success, but the write-up, precisely the condescending tone, did not go down well with fans. Tickets for Kraven the Hunter went on sale this morning for Sony Pictures' next Marvel movie and, well, the studio doesn't appear to be pulling out too many stops for this one. So far, four posters have been released, with IMAX's effort recycling an all-too-familiar piece of imagery.
The other four are a little better and, if nothing else, Aaron Taylor-Johnson certainly looks the part. Beyond that, the expectation is that the similarities between this Kraven and his comic book counterpart will be minimal.
Sony might have accepted that Kraven the Hunter will underperform, particularly when early estimates point to a $20 million opening.
The odds are very much stacked against the movie as it will have to contend with holdovers like Wicked and Moana 2, not to mention the likes of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Mufasa: The Lion King the following weekend.

The other three are a little better and, if nothing else, Aaron Taylor-Johnson certainly looks the part.

While the realm of comic book adaptations continues to captivate audiences, not all films follow a smooth path to the big screen. One such project is Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Kraven the Hunter, a long-anticipated live-action film that faced numerous production delays since 2023. Due to many speculated reasons, the film almost suffered the same fate as Marvel’s planned solo Gambit movie. But thankfully, Sony Pictures finally confirmed the film’s release date to be December 13, 2024.

Warning: Contains Minor Spoilers from Ranma 1/2's Remake, Episodes 1-4
The new remake for Rumiko Takahashi's classic manga, Ranma 1/2, features a subtle yet genius change that makes it worth watching for fans of the franchise. For the most part, Ranma 1/2's remake has been remarkably faithful to the source material. It hasn't strayed from the manga much, with the only major new addition being a new character named Ichiro created specifically for the series. However, a more subtle change in the show's execution has made it the perfect viewing experience for newcomers and long-time fans.
The series, for the most part, sticks to a fairly standard anime style, which most fans are likely accustomed to. However, there are times when the animation swaps styles to accentuate a punchline or play up certain emotional moments throughout the story. One of the most notable scenes that play with...

With the release of ‘Venom: The Last Dance’ Knull – the King in Black is being finally introduced to live-action. Kelly Marcel, the movie’s writer, and director stated that Knull is not supposed to be the main villain of ‘Venom 3’ but rather just a tease of what’s to come in the future for the character.
Ever since Knull was teased in the upcoming movie’s trailer, industry insiders claimed that Knull will play a massive role in the future of the MCU, to be more specific, in the upcoming ‘Spider-Man 4’ flick.
According to various reports The King in Black is supposed to be the main villain of the upcoming Spider-Man flick, and tear down the fabric of the Multiverse – it seems plausible enough, especially taking into account that Knull is a multiversal villain in nature
But, what if Knull is not really setting up ‘Spider-Man 4’ but rather the rumored ‘Sinister Six’ movie?...

Given his history in the realm of stuntwork, David Leitch hasn’t dropped the ball when it comes to action sequences in his movies, whether it be 2022’s Bullet Train or last year’s The Fall Guy. Unlike some of Leitch’s other works like John Wick, Bullet Train is more bombastic with its action, and Aaron Taylor Johnson even opted to perform some of his own stunts in the action flick.

He is coming. The Witch director Robert Eggers returns to the world of horror in the new trailer for Nosferatu (2024), which further teases It and The Crow star Bill Skarsgrds transformational performance as the vampiric Count Orlok. A remake of the silent 1922 German Expressionist vampire movie of the same name, which in turn is based on Bram Stoker's 1897 novel "Dracula," Nosferatu promises to terrify audiences with this gothic tale of obsession.

As the Spider-Man universe expands, anticipation builds for Kraven the Hunter, Sonys newest installment, starring one of Marvels most complex anti-heroes. Known for his fierce determination, unmatched tracking skills, and obsession with proving himself as the greatest hunter of the Marvel universe, Kraven stands out as a formidable figure in the Spider-Man rogues gallery. His arrival on the big screen presents a unique opportunity to explore a darker, more intense side of the Spider-Man mythos, while also introducing or reimagining other iconic characters from the long comics history of Kraven.
Seeing the inclusion of some of these characters in Kraven the Hunter has the potential to deepen the films narrative, intertwining Kravens personal vendettas with broader conflicts within the Marvel universe. Whether they be contemporaries, adversaries, or figures from Kravens storied past, these characters can offer fresh dynamics and unexpected twists.

Mark Wahlberg's "Play Dirty" is based on the Parker novel series and could finally launch a successful franchise built around the anti-hero thief. Despite past adaptations, Parker as a character has not gained mainstream success due to his cold, humorless nature. Previous Wahlberg co-stars Mel Gibson, Jason Statham and Robert Duvall have all starred in Parker movie adaptations.
Mark Wahlberg's Play Dirty can finally launch a franchise that three of his biggest co-stars failed to. When Wahlberg made the unlikely switch from rapper to movie star, he was balancing acclaimed dramas like Boogie Nights with B-movies like The Corrupter. Mark Wahlberg action movies soon became a subgenre unto themselves and while in recent years he's gravitated more towards family-friendly projects like Arthur the King, he'll still dip back into R-rated action on occasion.

Mark Wahlberg's upcoming heist movie Play Dirty could finally establish him as a franchise star after decades. Play Dirty, directed by Shane Black, follows Wahlberg as professional thief Parker in an international heist. Wahlberg sees Play Dirty as a blend of action and humor, with potential for future films based on the Parker character.
Mark Wahlberg's upcoming heist movie Play Dirty can finally spark the franchise he should have had over two decades ago. Apart from his roles in two Transformers movies and the celebrated Ted movies, Wahlberg has not signed on to many franchise projects throughout his career. His counterparts such as Matt Damon, Jason Statham, and Keanu Reeves all have dedicated franchises in addition to their other notable works, but Wahlberg has yet to solidify himself as the true face of any one franchise.

A user on Reddit raised an interesting point about the absence of Starborn weapons in the base game of Starfield. Given how big of a role the Starborn play in the game, this omission has got fans wondering.
They noted that while the characters do have custom spacesuits and ships with specialized weapons, they lack unique personal weapons. This oversight has left many players puzzled, and they’re wondering if this can be added in future expansions.
Starfield is Missing Starborn Weapons
The user posted on r/Starfield, wondering why a faction with such advanced technology didn’t have unique weapons. They mentioned that despite the customized spacesuits and ships, their fighters use the same weapons as other factions, which is rather basic and normal. This seemed like a big oversight, which is Bethesda’s specialty these days.

Things that go bump in the night, fears of the dark, nights of things like The Demon, The Living Dead, The Hunter and… err… The Lepus (big rabbits), are mainstays in horror. Something half glimpsed in the gloom when everything is quiet and people are sleeping is innately creepy. So it can sometimes be extra special when a horror movie manages to scare the bejesus out of us despite being set in the cold light of day. Or indeed, as is the case with many of the following movies because they are set in broad daylight.
So let the sun warm your skin while our favorite daytime horrors chill your heart!
Midsommar
This is an obvious first pick because part of the gimmick (and we mean that with affection) of the movie is that it’s set in Sweden during a commune’s Midsummer festival where the nights are very...

The First Omen repeats a major casting trick by featuring Ralph Ineson. Ineson previously played a similar character in 2015's The Witch. While The Witch's Ineson role is scarier, both movies offer compelling performances from the actor.
The First Omen has utilized a casting trick that helped a nine-year-old horror movie excel. A prequel to the 1976 classic The Omen, the movie was directed by Arkasha Stevenson and features a cast that includes Servant's Nell Tiger Free, Kiss of the Spider Woman's Snia Braga, and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales' Bill Nighy. The movie took in $53.7 million at the global box office, becoming the third highest-grossing horror movie of the year so far behind Exhuma ($97 million) and Night Swim ($54 million).
This may not have been enough for the First Omen release to break even theatrically, given its $30 million budget. However, it was well-received on Rotten Tomatoes...

The upcoming Play Dirty will star Mark Wahlberg as anti-hero thief Parker, setting up a potential Parker movie franchise. Previous adaptations of Donald E. Westlake's Parker novels struggled, with Statham's 2013 Parker film failing to launch a franchise. Director Shane Black is leading the potential Parker movie franchise, promising a fresh take on the iconic character.
A new Mark Wahlberg thriller could launch the Parker franchise that Jason Statham failed to kick off in 2013. Wahlberg used to star in a fairly reliable output of R-rated action movies and thrillers, but in recent years, he's dialed back and focused on dramas and comedies like Father Stu or The Family Plan. This has been a welcome change of pace for the star because while his action output was fun, by the time he starred in movies like Mile 22, they began to feel a tad samey.

Alita: Battle Angel star Rosa Salazar has joined the cast of Shane Black’s next film, Play Dirty. She’ll appear alongside Mark Wahlberg and Lakeith Stansfield.
After years in development, Shane Black’s thriller Play Dirty appears to be gathering pace. It was only the other day that Lakeith Stansfield was announced as a co-star alongside Mark Wahlberg; it’s now reported that he’ll be joined by Rosa Salazar, whose previous roles include the zesty anime adaptation, Alita: Battle Angel.
Deadline, the outlet that broke the story, doesn’t disclose what role Salazar will be playing in Black’s thriller, which is based on the long-running – and influential – series of novels written by Donald E Westlake.
It’s previously been reported that Play Dirty will draw on several of those novels rather than one in particular, though judging by Deadline’s synopsis, it’ll take at least a...

Three Western actors - Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, and Robert Redford - all turned down the lead role in the 1978 Superman movie, fearing it would overshadow their own personas. McQueen, who was near the end of his career, didn't want the burden of such a massive role. Newman believed he was too old for the part at 53 years old. While McQueen and Newman never starred in superhero movies, Redford later joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2014, showing that he was open to the idea after all.
Three prominent Western actors all rejected the lead role in the 1978 box office hit Superman. The Richard Donner film, which went on to generate roughly $300 million at the 1978 worldwide box office, was one of the most celebrated films of the year by fans and critics alike. Mort Engelberg, who was a producer on films including Smokey and the Bandit and The Big Easy before transitioning into politics as an “advance man” for Bill Clinton and other presidential candidates, died Saturday in Los Angeles of natural causes. He was 86.
“He was a wonderful person, a wonderful husband. He loved the movie business, and he loved his work with President Clinton,” his wife, Helaine Blatt, told The Hollywood Reporter. “He told the best stories of anyone I ever met, the best jokes.”
Born and raised in Memphis, Engelberg graduated from the University of Illinois and then spent a year working on a master’s degree in journalism at the University of Missouri. He left school before completing that degree and worked as a journalist for a few years before moving to Washington in 1961 to work for Sargent Shriver, the director of the then-newly formed Peace Corps, and later...

Mort Engelberg, a producer of the films Smokey And The Bandit and The Big Easy, has passed away. Engelberg was 86, and he died in Los Angeles in the company of his wife, Helaine Blatt, a success herself as a high-end jewelry broker.
Engelberg was producing films when he took time away from his day job and organized a famous bus tour taken by Arkansas governor and presidential aspirant Bill Clinton and his running mate Al Gore through numerous states the summer after the Democratic Convention in 1992. Engelberg served a similar role previously for candidates Walter F. Mondale in 1984 and Michael Dukakis in 1988. For Clinton, the bus tour was a rousing success. It bonded Clinton, Gore and their wives, and presenting the amiable presidential candidate as an everymen who thrived mixing with real people in cities across the country. It would become a trademark for Clinton’s successful two presidential runs.

It was announced today that Pat E. Johnson, who choreographed the fight scenes for the first four Karate Kid movies, has died at the age of 84.
Pat E. Johnson was a ninth-degree black belt in American Tang Soo Do and also served as vice president of the National Tang Soo Do Congress, which was created by Chuck Norris in 1973.
