A Steven Spielberg Classic Beat 3 New Releases At The Labor Day Box Office
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Despite three new Hollywood releases making their way into theaters over the long Labor Day holiday weekend, Steven Spielberg's "Jaws" outshined them all at the box office. Indeed, the blockbuster classic was re-released by Universal Pictures as part of the studio's ongoing celebration of the movie's 50-year anniversary. As it turns out, people still really love this film, so much so that it was the number two title overall this past weekend.

Overall, "Jaws" earned an estimated $9.8 million over the Friday to Monday holiday frame, including $8.1 million from Friday to Sunday. That was good enough for the number two...

Denzel Washington on Cancel Culture: 'You Can't Be Canceled if You Haven't Signed Up'
Image
Denzel Washington gets honest about cancel culture in today's society, offering a thoughtful response. Best known for The Equalizer franchise and for films like Training Day (2001), The Book of Eli, Washington remains one of the most beloved and celebrated actors working in Hollywood today, and he can now be seen in Spike Lee's Highest 2 Lowest(2025).

No matter how respected a Hollywood figure may seem, however, the last few years have shown that nobody is immune to cancel culture, with movements often gaining steam on social media due to actor or director photos or comments. Washington has so far remained unaffected by this harmful phenomenon.

During a recent interview with Complex, Washington is asked directly about his relationship to public opinion, and the actor makes clear it's not something he cares much about. Check out his comment below:

"Who cares? What made public support so important to begin with?...

Why It Took 35 Years for Spike Lee’s ‘Highest 2 Lowest’ to Hit Theaters
Image
Producer Jason Michael Berman was in grade school, while screenwriter Alan Fox was a toddler when Hollywood first tried to get a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 classic High and Low off the ground. Thirty five years later, they are two of the people responsible for it finally hitting theaters as Highest 2 Lowest, the first collaboration between director Spike Lee and star Denzel Washington in 18 years.

The year was 1990.

Pulitzer Prize winner David Mamet was hired to write a remake of High and Low, which was based on the Ed McBain novel King’s Ransom and followed a Japanese shoe executive whose driver’s son is mistakenly targeted by kidnappers.

Mamet turned in a few drafts, but it never got off the ground. From there, a procession of writers and directors followed. Martin Scorsese, Mike Nichols and I’m Still Here Oscar winner Walter Salles were attached to direct at various points,...

National Cinema Day paused for 2025
Image
After three successful years, theUK’s National Cinema Day has been put on hold, although it may be revived next year.

The late summer, one-day initiative launched in its current incarnation in 2022 and offered cinema-goers across the UK and Ireland the chance to watch films for £3 or £4.

Cross-industry body Cinema First, supported by the Film Distributors’ Association and the UK Cinema Association, organised the event which was established as the sector was emerging from the pandemic. It was inspired by the original UK “National Cinema Day” held in June 1996, a period when attendances were dipping, with tickets selling for one pound.

Dakota Fanning Horror Movie ‘Vicious’ to Debut on Paramount+ After Removal From Theatrical Calendar
Image
The Dakota Fanning-led horror movie Vicious is set to debut via streaming later this year after it was previously removed from Paramount Pictures’ theatrical release calendar.

Writer-director Bryan Bertino’s feature will premiere at Fantastic Fest in Austin next month before its release on Paramount+ and digital formats Oct. 10. Kathryn Hunter, Mary McCormack, Rachel Blanchard, Devyn Nekoda, Klea Scott and Emily Mitchell round out the cast.

Vicious centers on Polly (Fanning), who receives a gift from a late-night visitor and becomes trapped in a world where reality is not what it seems.

The film had initially been scheduled to hit theaters in August of this year, before its theatrical release was moved up to Feb. 28, 2025. Late last year, the studio took the project off of its calendar amid a search for a better date for the film.

Nick Frost's Sleeper Horror Hit with a 'Heartstopper' Star is an Unlikely Streaming Success in America
Image
Despite only releasing less than a year ago, Nick Frost's folk horror/comedy Get Away has already fallen under many people's radars. Also starring the effortlessly funny Aisling Bea, Heartstopper’s Sebastian Croft, and young actress Maisie Ayres, Get Away opened to positive reviews and earned a strong, "certified fresh" 76% critics' score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. Now, 10 months on from its festival debut at Fantastic Fest, Get Away is finally a streaming hit in America.

Officially, as of July 21, 2025, Get Away is one of the ten most-streamed movies on Hulu in the US. Directed by Steffen Haars, the movie joins many other bigger-budget titles currently topping the Hulu charts as it punches above its weight on streaming. This includes the likes of Denzel Washington and Antoine Fuqua’s explosive The Equalizer 3, John Travolta and Gina Gershon's sleeper hit High Rollers, and the brand-new sci-fi flick The Assessment...

The Best Movie in Denzel Washington's Only Franchise Fumbles on Streaming to a Jason Statham Flick That Deserved Better in Theaters
Image
The streaming battle between Jason Statham and Denzel Washington has jumped from Prime Video to Hulu. After tussling with A Working Man last month, The Equalizer 3 is now dealing with Wrath of Man.

Per FlixPatrol, Wrath of Man and The Equalizer 3 have swapped spots on Hulu's Top 10 Movies in the United States list and, as of July 24, are ranked No. 7 and No. 8, respectively. However, the Statham-led Wrath of Man has its work cut out for it if it hopes to move further up the list, as The Amateur, High Rollers, The Assessment, In the Lost Lands, Distant, and Get Away are holding steady in the top six spots. While The Equalizer 3 continues to be popular on streaming, there always seems to be an action flick starring Statham on the same platform that stops it from rising higher on the charts.

Serving as Washington's only headlining franchise,...

A Forgotten '90s Crime Thriller Starring Denzel Washington Gets a Sudden Surge on Streaming
Image
As several recent and classic Denzel Washington films have found streaming success this summer, one of his more forgotten movies is the latest to become an online hit. Washington's 1999 crime thriller, The Bone Collector, is a fast riser on the streaming charts.

Per Collider, The Bone Collector is climbing the Rakuten TV chart globally. The film is one of the 10 most popular movies worldwide, finding chart success in Lithuania and other countries. In the U.S., it is available for streaming on Prime Video.

Two years before his Best Actor Academy Award-winning performance in another crime thriller, Training Day, Washington starred in The Bone Collector alongside fellow Oscar-winner and A-lister Angelina Jolie. Directed by Philip Noyce, who's best known for helming several Jack Ryan adaptations, The Bone Collector is based on Jeffery Deaver's 1997 novel of the same name and also features appearances by Queen Latifah, Michael Rooker and Luis Guzmán.

Why The Equalizer 3's Italy Shoot Had The Crew Vomiting
Image
Of all the 1980s properties to survive into the 20th century, "The Equalizer" has proven to be one of the most surprising. Edward Woodward embodied Robert McCall on the original CBS television series for four seasons, while Queen Latifah played a genderbent version named Robyn McCall on a reboot series that lasted five seasons on the same network. However, it's the legendary Denzel Washington who's had the longest tenure as McCall, having played the character for over a decade in Antoine Fuqua's "Equalizer" films. No single actor plays the role like the others either, with the only throughline being a central figure with a violent past using their skills to protect those that can't protect themselves.

In terms of the McCall with the most brutal sensibilities, that honor goes to Washington without question. Fuqua's first two "Equalizer" films demonstrate just how ruthless he can be (especially with a nail...

Sci-Fi Thriller That Took 5 Years To Release Is Now A Hit On Streaming
Image
A sci-fi thriller has now become a success on streaming after a long road to actually releasing. From small budgets to big-budget blockbuster fare, sci-fi remains a dependable genre with wide audience appeal. The genre often transports viewers to an alternate version of reality, showing advanced technology or possible futures.

Sci-fi movies have been a staple of the theatrical space for decades. From early cult classics like Blade Runner (1982) to Christopher Nolan's acclaimed and beloved Interstellar (2014), these movies are often built for the big screen.

In today's streaming-dominant era, however, audiences are also likely to see some sci-fi flicks go straight to streaming. The Gorge (2025), for example, was released directly onto Apple TV+ in February and The Electric State (2025) hit Netflix in March.

A direct-to-streaming release can sometimes make a movie feel like less of a cultural event, but that certainly doesn't mean it can't reach viewers. Often, sci-fi...

The $104 Million Action Flick That Broke a 16-Year Guy Ritchie & Jason Statham Streak Is Finally Running Out of Fuel on Streaming
Image
An underrated Guy Ritchie movie that broke a more than decade-long cinematic streak is starting to lose its grip on the streaming charts.

Per FlixPatrol, 2021's Wrath of Manhas slowly slipped down the top streaming movies chart for Hulu for Jul. 16, leaving it at the number eight spot on the list. As of now, Wrath of Man only sits above The Equalizer 3 and Back to the Future in the top ten, while competition such as The Longest Yard starring Adam Sandler and Bridesmaids continue to make their way up the list.

Directed by Ritchie from a screenplay co-written alongside Ivan Atkinson and Marn Davies, Wrath of Man starred Jason Statham in what was then his first collaboration with Ritchie for more than 16 years. Based on Éric Besndard's 2004 French crime drama Le Convoyeur (Cash Truck), Wrath of Man saw Statham take on the role of Patrick "H" Hill, a newly...

Denzel Washington's Acclaimed Action Film Shoots Up Streaming Charts Two Years Later
Image
Though Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington has portrayed many notable characters in his distinguished career, his turn as vigilante Robert McCall is the only big-screen role he's played more than once, thanks to his lone franchise, The Equalizer. The best franchise entry, The Equalizer 3, puts McCall front and center like never before, with the film once again becoming a big hit on Hulu years after its release.

Via Flix Patrol, The Equalizer 3 has become a fast-rising entry on Hulu, moving up the Disney-owned streaming service's top 10 movie chart in the U.S. The threequel, which was just outside the top 10 days ago, is now ranked 4th on Hulu's chart, outperforming the first two Back to the Future entries and the classic film, Dirty Dancing. The $191 Million Action Flick That Broke a 46-Year Denzel Washington Trend Is Exploding on the Streaming Charts

Acting legend Denzel Washington is a rarity in Hollywood as he's one of the few who has largely stayed away from franchises. However, the release of Sony Pictures' The Equalizer 3 broke a 46-year trend for Washington, with the best installment from the actor's only film series becoming a big hit on Hulu years after its premiere.

Denzel Washington's $191.1 Million Action Smash He Called "a Movie People Relate to" Is a Streaming Sleeper Hit in America

It turns out Robert McCall is hard to kill – and even harder to ignore. After quietly wrapping up one of the most consistent trilogies in modern action cinema, The Equalizer 3 is now enjoying a new life as a streaming sleeper hit on Hulu in the U.S., climbing the charts nearly a year after its theatrical release. The final film in Denzel Washington and Antoine Fuqua’s explosive saga of justice and vengeance brought in $191.1 million worldwide – and now, it's winning over streaming audiences who can’t get enough of the reluctant avenger with a stopwatch and a strict moral code. For Washington, who'd never reprised a role on the big screen before McCall, the decision to return again and again wasn’t just about box office. It was personal.

Sequel To Denzel Washington's $157M Action Thriller In Development With Hopes Of Star's Return

A Crimson Tide sequel is in development with hopes that Denzel Washington will return. Directed by Tony Scott, the 1995 action thriller follows the power struggle between a newly appointed executive officer (played by Denzel Washington) and the veteran commanding officer (Gene Hackman) of a U.S. nuclear submarine, sparked by differing interpretations of a missile launch order.

The movie received mostly positive reviews from critics for delivering intense, high-energy suspense and sharp dialogue, thanks in part to an uncredited contribution from Quentin Tarantino, and showcasing Tony Scott operating at the peak of his action prowess. It was also a box office success, making over $157 million against a $53 million budget.

This Mark Wahlberg Mind-Bender Was Offloaded by Its Studio, but Now It’s a Streaming Hit

While Adam Sandler was arguably ahead of the curve in pivoting to streaming when he discovered that his audience would probably stop making trips to theaters to watch his comedies, Mark Wahlberg's transition hasn't been as smooth. The Equalizer 3 (2023) Movie Ending Explained – Maintaining the effectiveness of an ageing action star
Image
This is the second iteration out of three iterations of “The Equalizer” franchise: the original 1980s television series, the movie trilogy starring Denzel Washington and directed by Antoine Fuqua, and a reboot of the television series starring Queen Latifah. In all of the instances, it followed a retired intelligence agent who used the skills they had learned throughout his career to extract vigilante justice on behalf of the innocent.

The most famous of all these iterations, inevitably, follows Denzel Washington as retired CIA intelligence agent Robert McCall. As the first film opens, he lives a quiet life in Boston and works at a hardware store. He befriends Teri, a teenage sex worker played by Chloe Grace Moretz. She is beaten by her pimp in front of Robert and taken in by the Russian Mafia. Offering to buy her freedom, McCall is refused and chooses to make quick work of them in brutal succession.

Netflix is dropping only 8 series and movies the rest of June 2025
Image
Netflix fans can breathe easily the rest of the month. There isn't much going out, and a few more things coming in. Usually, at the end of the month, lots leave, but not in June 2025.

In fact, there are only eight titles leaving, and only a few that are loads of people's favorites. American Sniper and Bradley Cooper have their fans, of course, but the film is far from Cooper's best. (Netflix makes an interesting choice of having a film with a slightly related title - Blood Will Tell - leave on the same day.)

Other than that, subscribers should not be too upset. That will change on July 1, however. The mass exodus more than makes up for the few that are going away at the end of June.

What is leaving Netflix the rest of June?

If you like the Ocean's films, for instance, get ready to say so long.

2025 is flying by — just ask our lists of the best movies and television of the year so far — and it is (somehow) now July. While networks take a break from much of their narrative programming and Emmy voters get to voting, streaming services like Hulu and Disney+ keep churning out content, from newly acquired titles to original films and series and family-friendly programming for those entertaining kids during summer vacation.

As always, we’ve put all of the month’s new Hulu and Disney+ titles in one handy list, including our top pick to watch in July.

Top Pick: “Washington Black” (Hulu)

Alex Garland’s 93% Rotten Tomatoes War Thriller Just Beat Denzel Washington’s $191 Million Action Sequel on Global Streaming Charts
Image
As it did when it debuted in theaters earlier this year, Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza's Warfare dropped on streaming with a bang. The war thriller, which sort of underperformed at the box office but earned excellent reviews, beat a Denzel Washington blockbuster in its first two days of release on Prime Video. Featuring an ensemble cast of young male stars, Warfare was based on a real-life incident experienced by Mendoza, who served in the Iraq War. The movie made a little over $30 million worldwide against a reported budget of $20 million.

According to FlixPatrol, Warfare was the fourth-biggest film on Prime Video on June 18, whereas Washington's The Equalizer 3 had to settle for the eighth spot. The Prime Video charts were topped by The Accountant 2, which recently debuted on streaming after grossing over $100 million worldwide. The number three spot was claimed by its predecessor, The Accountant, with...

Jason Statham's Latest Action Movie Stops Denzel Washington's Thriller Threequel From Further Streaming Success
Image
A battle between two action legends is currently brewing on Prime Video. In one corner, Denzel Washington and his action thriller threequel, The Equalizer 3. In the other, Jason Statham and his latest action hit, A Working Man.

Per FlixPatrol, A Working Man has stopped The Equalizer 3 from climbing any further on Prime Video's Top 10 Movies list, keeping it at No. 5 to A Working Man's No. 4.Yesterday, The Equalizer 3 was at No. 4, meaning that the action threequel has made a U-turn and is now on its way out of Prime's Top 10 list. Although it's not quite a win for Statham either, as A Working Man is also moving downward on the list, with Ben Affleck's The Accountant duology holding strong as the No. 1 and No. 2 movies worldwide on Prime Video.

Released in 2023, The Equalizer 3 is the third and final installment in The Equalizer film trilogy.

Clint Eastwood’s Oscar-Winning Drama That Broke a 44-Year-Old Streak Is Hiding on Prime Video
Image
Clint Eastwood is a name often synonymous with tough, stoic characters in his distinctively American narrative. From Western standoffs to patriotic biopics, his filmography has included men of action, often with a gun in hand and a clear sense of right and wrong. Whether playing the cop in Dirty Harry or directing stories of heroism like Sully and Flags of Our Fathers, Eastwood has rarely strayed far from the stories of justice.

But in 2003, he delivered a triggering psychological drama so unlike anything from his filmography. It remains one of his most haunting works, and it broke a very old Oscar record. Now, the movie is streaming on Prime Video, waiting for viewers to rediscover it. This Academy Award-winning neo-noir movie is Mystic River.

Ben Affleck’s latest round as number-cruncher-turned-hitman Christian Wolff may have stumbled at the box office, but The Accountant 2 is laughing all the way to Prime Video. That’s right, what couldn’t break even in theaters is now breaking records online.

Denzel Washington’s $191 Million Crime Thriller Comes To a Screeching Halt on Streaming Thanks to Jason Statham
Image
It’s been a quiet year for Denzel Washington thus far after Gladiator II closed out 2024 for the two-time Oscar-winner, and one of his more recent action flicks has finally hit a wall on streaming. Washington stars alongside Dakota Fanning in The Equalizer 3, the action threequel that’s been climbing Prime Video streaming charts. However, after reaching the third spot on the streamer’s global charts, The Equalizer 3 has stopped its climb after running intoA Working Man, the latest action thriller led by Jason Statham. The Equalizer 3 premiered in 2023, and it grossed $191 million at the box office against a $70 million budget, making the film a financial success for Sony Pictures. It also earned a “certified fresh” 76% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a “verified hot” 94% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter.

July Will Be a Sad Month for ‘Overlord’ Fans
Image
In typical Netflix fashion, the streaming giant is already gearing up for the removal of several favorites, including some high-profile movies, series, and a couple of Netflix Originals, ahead of next month. Among these works of art is the beloved isekai anime series, Overlord, as confirmed by What’s on Netflix. All four seasons of Overlord depart Netflix on July 1, about three weeks away, which may not be enough time for fans to revisit the 52-episode series.

While this may be saddening, several other options are available to stream Overlord. Crunchyroll currently streams all four seasons but may not be as easily accessible as Netflix. Hulu offers Overlord, too, but unfortunately, only Season 1 is available on the streamer. Meanwhile, for physical media collectors, retailers list each collection for around $30-40, depending on the format.

Overlord is based on Kugane Maruyama’s eponymous light novel series and was produced by Madhouse...

The film was helmed by Antoine Fuqua, who had previously directed Washington in Training Day, netting him a Best Actor Oscar. The film was a hit at the box office, earning $192 million Usd on a $55–73 million budget, and critics were generally favorable,...

¡Wow! Denzel Washington, Robert Pattinson y Daisy Edgar-Jones protagonizarán la película ‘Here Comes the Flood’.
Image

Denzel Washington’s Career In Pictures: From ‘Carbon Copy’ To ‘The Equalizer 3’
Image
Two-time Oscar winner Denzel Washington is often described as one of the greatest actors of his generation. He won his Academy Awards for the supporting grole of Pvt. Trip in Glory (1989) and for his leading role of Alonzo in Training Day (2001).

Washington was also Oscar-nominated for his performances as Steve Biko in Cry Freedom (1987), as Malcolm X in Malcolm X (1992), as Rubin Carter in The Hurricane (1999), as Whip Whitaker in Flight (2012), as Troy Maxson in Fences (2016), as Roman J. Israel in Roman J. Israel, Esq. (2017) and as Macbeth in The Tragedy of Macbeth (2021).

This Exceptional Denzel Washington Thriller Terrifies on Prime Video
Image
It’s saying something that my favorite part of Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II wasn’t one Paul Mescal, but instead one of this generation’s greatest living performers, Denzel Washington. He was even widely considered a front-runner for an Oscar nom this year. Upon his snub, he remarked to The New York Times, “On the day you didn’t get a nomination for an Oscar, you’re working on Othello on Broadway.” Incredible.

It helps that Gladiator II is one in a long line of worthwhile Denzel Washington vehicles. The two-time Oscar winner loves a character drama as much as he does some action schlock. Seriously, no one does it quite as well as he does. It should come as no surprise, then, that one of Washington’s most successful franchises in recent years recently fought its way into the Top 10 Prime Video charts.

Per Prime Video: Denzel Washington...

Netflix Unites Denzel Washington & Robert Pattinson for 'Unconventional' New Film
Image
Three of Hollywood's biggest stars are joining forces for a new Netflix heist movie from director Fernando Meirelles.

Per Variety, Denzel Washington, Robert Pattinson, and Daisy Edgar-Jones are set to star in Here Comes the Flood, a new heist film for Netflix. Meirelles directs from a script written by Simon Kinberg. Meirelles is fresh off directing episodes of the Apple TV+ original series Sugar, which was recently renewed for a second season. Meirelles is an Oscar-nominated director best known for films such as City of God and The Two Popes. Meirelles will also produce Here Comes the Flood alongside Kinberg and Audrey Chon. Samson Mucke serves as executive producer.

Per the official logline, Here Comes the Flood is an "unconventional heist movie about a bank guard, a teller, and a master thief in a deadly game of cons and double crosses." There is currently no release window for the film,...

Denzel Washington's 7-Year-Old Action Sequel Challenges Tom Hardy's Havoc on Netflix Streaming Chart
Image
Denzel Washington's lone franchise in his distinguished career, The Equalizer, finds new life on another streaming service. The gory action film, The Equalizer 2, debuts strongly on Netflix shortly after landing on the popular platform.

Via Collider, The Equalizer 2 now ranks third on Netflix's top 10 movies chart after debuting on the streamer this past weekend, challenging Tom Hardy's new action film, Havoc. This marks the second time The Equalizer 2 has found instant success in the streaming world this year, hitting the top 10 of Prime Video's charts in January.

Released in 2018, The Equalizer 2 sees Denzel Washington reprise his main role as Marine Corps veteran and former Dia officer Robert McCall. The film finds McCall in a vengeful mood as he hunts down the perpetrators who murdered his friend, returning to his violent ways while working as a Lyft driver. The Equalizer 2 features Washington opposite his Gladiator II co-star,...

Denzel Washington’s Lowest-Rated Equalizer Movie Battles Tom Hardy’s ‘Havoc’ on Streaming Charts
Image
Tom Hardy’s new action movie, Havoc, has already experienced quite the fall from grace on Netflix after spending only a few days atop streaming charts, but now it has more competition coming for its spot. The Equalizer 2, which stars Denzel Washington opposite Pedro Pascal, hit Netflix this weekend and has immediately jumped to #3 on the streamer’s top 10 movies chart, one spot behind Havoc. As the audience score on Rotten Tomatoes continues to drop for Havoc — currently at 37% at the time of writing — The Equalizer 2 will certainly overtake it and send it further down the rankings. Washington’s action thriller earned a 52% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, the lowest in the franchise. The first installment earned a 61% and the final outing earned a 76% on the aggregate site.

Denzel Washington’s most recent role came from starring opposite Paul Mescal in Gladiator II, the legacy sequel directed...

MCU Director Details Receiving an Apology From Oscar Winner Denzel Washington: “Did I say too much?”
Image
The MCU has had several updates in the last few weeks, with announcements about Avengers: Doomsday and Spider-Man: Brand New Day coming in at CinemaCon. However, there has been no official announcement yet about the upcoming Black Panther 3, which is set to have Denzel Washington in a pivotal role.

The news was first revealed by the Training Day star himself during the press tour for Gladiator II. However, Washington also reportedly called up director Ryan Coogler, who is confirmed to return to the third film, and apologized for revealing too much. Coogler said that he was blessed to just have him on board.

Bohemian Rhapsody Producer's Michael Jackson Biopic Might Lose Release Date as Studio Considers Big Change
Image
Michael, the anticipated biopic chronicling the "King of Pop," Michael Jackson, appears to be moonwalking away from its initial release plan. The upcoming blockbuster produced by Bohemian Rhapsody's Graham King may not premiere this year as intended and could be broken up into multiple movies.

Per Deadline, Michael looks unlikely to make its intended October premiere as Lionsgate ponder what to do with the Antoine Fuqua-helmed feature-length project. Clocking in at around four hours, Lionsgate is considering splitting up Michael into two films, though it's reportedly not a definitive option yet. There is also speculation the movie may be released later in the year to coincide with awards season, though Lionsgate is due to release the Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfrield-led The Housemaid on Christmas Day.

Several factors prompted the uncertainty surrounding Michael's release. First, there are questions about IMAX screen accessibility as Lionsgate handles domestic distribution while Universal Pictures takes care of overseas.

April 1 Will Be an Incredible Day for Denzel Washington Fans
Image
Denzel Washington fans get a treat to start next month as one of the Hollywood legend's greatest action films finds a new streaming home. The Oscar-winner's vigilante thriller, The Equalizer, draws a streaming premiere via Hulu.

Hulu recently confirmed that The Equalizer will debut via its platform on Apr. 1. The Washington-led pic became a streaming favorite last year following the success of The Equalizer 3. The original film landed on Paramount+ last year following a short but successful Netflix stint. The first movie, along with its two sequels, also became available for free via Tubi early this month.

The Equalizer marks Washington's first turn as its central protagonist, Robert McCall, a former U.S. Marine and Dia officer trying to live a quiet life away from the spotlight. However, McCall reluctantly returns to action to save a teenage trafficking victim named Teri (Chloë Grace Moretz) from the Russian mafia,...

Studio Films Offer Best Bang for the Buck for Netflix
Image
Acquired studio films that have benefited from a wide theatrical release offer the best bang for the buck for Netflix, providing more views per dollar spent than original features or acquired series, a new report has found.

The report, “Unpacking Netflix’s evolving movie strategy,” published Wednesday by Ampere Analysis, tracks viewership across Netflix for feature films, both originals and licensed, over time. Author Christen Tamisin found acquired films, including those under Netflix’s premium pay deals with Sony and NBCUniversal “contribute significantly to Netflix’s total viewing,” and, “with their lower cost-per-view,” are more cost-efficient than Netflix’s big-budget originals.

Netflix spent $1.07 billion on movie licensing in the first half of last year, the report notes, with acquired movies drawing 9.23 billion total views for the period. The streamer’s original movie spend over the same period was just under half that, at $0.51 billion, with fewer than half the total viewers,...
