Gladiator movie fans can start getting excited as a new set video for the upcoming sequel was just released. Gladiator 2 is set to return to the big screen, and we can expect to see the iconic sands of the Colosseum while gladiators fight to their deaths. A recent set video, shared by Morocco's Minister of Culture, Mohammed Mehdi Bensaid, has generated buzz among fans by hinting at an epic city siege battle set to take place in the movie as reported by Collider.
The first Gladiator film followed the epic saga of Maximus (portrayed by Russell Crowe), a respected Roman general that has fallen to become a slave gladiator. The intense battle Maximus has faced in the gladiatorial arenas served as a testament to his courage and mettle. It made him a beacon of hope for those oppressed by the new emperor’s tyranny. The size of the cysts was comparable to that of a 10-week pregnancy. Idris Elba, who starred as Russell "Stringer" Bell on The Wire for three seasons reveals that, in some ways, the role hurt his career. First airing on HBO in 2002, The Wire ultimately ran for five seasons until its conclusion in 2008. The series chronicles the lives of the drug dealers, law enforcement officers, and innocent bystanders who get caught up in the Baltimore drug scene, with Elba's Bell serving as the right-hand man to drug kingpin Avon Barksdale.
In a recent interview with The Guardian, Elba reveals that, although his role on The Wire was really his big break in many ways, it also hurt his career in others. After convincingly playing an American for three seasons, the actor explains that his British heritage actually resulted in less interesting roles coming his way. Check out Elba's full comment below:

In his lifetime, Tracy Marrow has been everything from a dancer and a DJ, to a thief and a weed dealer. Yet, from the minute Marrow became Ice-t, his renown developed and grew.
Initially, being Ice-t meant becoming hip-hop’s most incendiary voice, a sinister avatar of the reality-rap style tagged by the press as “gangster”. Equally famous was Ice-t’s gig as an actor-with-attitude in films such as “New Jack City” and — since 2000 — for television producer Dick Wolf’s police drama “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” as NYPD Detective Odafin Tutuola.
Ice-t brings street cred to everything he does — including commercials. He beams with pride discussing his hood past and how its raw-knuckle spirit remains. Even seeing Ice-t riding a spin cycle, promoting Cheerios and heart health, is hardcore. And it all starts with hip-hop. Despite its current state of musicality being — in his words, “goofy” — Ice-t is...

Bollywood A-lister Kartik Aaryan will headline “Aashiqui 3,” the third instalment in the hit franchise, with Anurag Basu (“Barfi!”) to direct.
The franchise was launched in 1990 by T-Series and Vishesh Films with hit film “Aashiqui,” directed by Mahesh Bhatt and starring Rahul Roy and Anu Aggarwal. The franchise was revived in 2013 with “Aashiqui 2,” directed by Mohit Suri and starring Shraddha Kapoor and Aditya Roy Kapur, which was also a box office success.
The second part of the musical love story was a spiritual successor rather than a direct sequel and the third part will continue in that vein. Pritam, who has a long and successful working relationship with Basu, having composed the hit scores of several of his films, including “Barfi!,” “Gangster” and “Life in a… Metro,” will provide the songs.
Producer Mukesh Bhatt of Vishesh Films said. “On the evening of Aug. 16, 1990, a day before the ‘Aashiqui’ release, Gulshanji...

The new trailer for the upcoming thriller Mean Dreams carries the tragic burden of including one of the final roles completed by the late Bill Paxton. The actor, who recently passed away at the age of 61, is beloved by fans of blockbusters and independent film alike, having built a career that spanned four decades. He delivered memorable roles in every genre, but it seems as though this particular parting gift might well be one for the ages. Featuring a nuanced amplification of the kind of disturbing violence contained in his own directorial debut, Frailty, Bill Paxton looms over this promotional footage of Mean Dreams with a terrifying intensity.
Directed by Nathan Morlando (Gangster), and with a script that marks the feature length debut of writers Kevin Coughlin and Ryan Grassby, Mean Dreams centres on two teenagers and their attempts to escape their abusive domestic situations while falling in love in rural America.

A couple of years ago director Nathan Morlando arrived on the scene with Edwin Boyd (review), a passion project which told the true story of the titular character, a former bus driver who turned to robbing banks to support his family. For his follow-up, Morlando has stayed within the thriller genre but this time with a story which focuses on two teens that get themselves into serious trouble with some very bad people.
Mean Dreams stars relative newcomer Josh Wiggins as Jonas, a teen living in rural Canada who has left school to work the farm and help the family stay afloat while Sophie Nélisse is Casey, the pretty young daughter of the new town deputy (played by [Continued ...]...

Director Nathan Morlando made a bit of a splash a couple of years ago with his feature film debut Edwin Boyd, a period heist movie I wasn't particularly impressed with but which suggested Morlando showed potential given the right material and with his sophomore feature, it seems he may have found his stride.
Mean Dreams, which premiered at Cannes earlier this year, stars Sophie Nélisse (a complete revelation in 2013's otherwise forgettable The Book Thief) as Casey and relative newcomer Josh Wiggins as Jonas, a pair of teenagers desperate to escape their abusive homes. It won’t be the first film about the Somali pirates to come out, but it might be the only one that claims to be told from the pirates’ perspective. In an interview with THR, Jim Sturgess confirmed his role in “The Lion’s Share,” an indie to be directed by Nathan Morlando (“Citizen Gangster”), and while the foundation of his part in the film is innocent enough -- "I play a journalist who basically goes to try and uncover that story and that world" -- it tackles the issue from an unexpected angle. "[It's] set in Africa, based on the point of view of the Somali pirates," the actor explained. "I was really blown away when I read the script. It really gives a voice and a perspective to a big problem. But you see the origins and foundation of where the problem came from. And, of course, it comes...

Quadrophenia (Criterion) Franc Roddam’s 1979 film based on The Who’s classic rock opera tells the story of working class lad Jimmy (Phil Daniels) struggling to find his identity in a rapidly changing Britain, circa 1965. Jimmy is a “mod,” a youth movement dedicated to wearing snappy suits, driving Vespa motor scooters bedecked with side mirrors, popping amphetamines and obsessed with the new sound of bands like The Who and The Kinks. Their other pastime is engaging in bloody brawls with “rockers,” throwbacks to the 1950s, who listen to Elvis and Gene Vincent, wear leather biker gear, grease in their hair and drive massive motorcycles a la Marlon Brando in “The Wild One.” Often cited as a worthy successor to “Rebel Without a Cause” as the greatest angry youth picture ever made, it is that and more, including a first cousin to the “kitchen sink” dramas of scribes John Osborne,...

Citizen Gangster’s story resonates with any person who’s down on their luck in an era when times are tough and jobs are nowhere to be found, but in its attempts to reinvent the criminal as celebrity concept the film falters as the writing breaks down. It tries to be similarly insightful about veterans as the odd men out of peace time, feeling estranged from the real world and driven to lives that give them the adrenaline rush their wartime tour hooked them on. In trying to tie these elements together in a criminal drama, the script jumps back and forth without ever really finding a singular approach to who its characters are. Luckily, Citizen Gangster has a capable cast of Scott Speedman, Kevin Durand, Brian Cox, William Mapother, and Kelly Reilly to keep it moving.

Like American outlaws Jesse James and John Dillinger, in the late 1940s and early 1950s Canada had Edwin Boyd, our own notorious bank robber who somehow managed to gain public support and become a media darling.
In director Nathan Morlando's Edwin Boyd: Citizen Gangster, Toronto native Scott Speedman (The Vow, Barney's Version) plays Boyd, a World War II vet who returns home to Toronto with dreams of becoming a Hollywood star. But he also has a wife (Kelly Reilly) and young family to support, and after being rejected by a Toronto acting school and quitting his job as a bus driver, he starts robbing banks to pay the bills, using his charm and flair for the dramatic to do it with style.
We spoke with Speedman, who earned a Best Actor Genie nomination for his performance, after the movie’s premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Last weekend, "The Hunger Games" dropped out of the top spot at the box office Nationwide Releases "The Five-Year Engagement" What's the story? Um, a five-year engagement, duh! In this charming romantic comedy, Jason Segel and Emily Blunt play an engaged couple attempting to tie the knot. Obviously, this doesn't happen right away, as their plans for marriage continuously get delayed over and over and over again. Box-office prediction: The rom-com "Think Like a Man" was number one at the box office last weekend, so "Engagement" will have to deal with some competition from that. However, Jason Segel has a dedicated following, and the film was produced by Judd Apatow. $17 million

Edwin Alonzo Boyd was one of Canada’s prominent bank robbers following World War II. A splashy, glamorous war vet with a flair for theatrics, he managed to swindle several financial institutions in between two daring prison breaks, all in the name of his wife and children. And yet, the reason why this story hasn’t circulated all that much before “Citizen Gangster” is because Boyd’s story really is a whole lot like any other bank robbers'. Once you’ve seen a few of these movies, there’s not a whole lot of variation.
Scott Speedman is Boyd, a veteran-turned-working stiff who can’t seem to hold onto a job, either due to restlessness or a rough-and-tumble economy. Feeling the crunch of wife Doreen (Kelly Reilly) and their two kids, he also can’t escape his thirst for showmanship. In the first scene, he returns home with bad news banging around in his head,...

As we roll into Berlin where War Witch (aka Rebelle) (Isa: Films Distribution) by Kim Nguyen is in Competition. While it’s Kim’s 4th feature, this is the first of his films to have a world premiere at an international festival. This is exceptional as well because the last time the Canadians had a Canadian director in Competition at the Berlinale was in 1999 with Emporte-Moi ! Guy Madden’s Keyhole holds a Berlinale Special slot. Guy is Canada’s cultural ambassador in Berlin and a regular at the Festival and sat on the Berlinale’s Official Jury last year – with Isabella Rossellini.
Sheldon Larry’s Leave It on the Floor (Isa: Arrow) is a U.S.-Canadian Co-pro which has played Laff, Tiff and is now in the Panorama.
Films in the Forum include Green Laser by another Berlinale favorite, John Greyson. Green Laser is his 8th film at the festival. His first was Urinal in 1989. Denis Côté’s Bestiary, straight from Sundance, and Francine, the first narrative feature by Melanie Shatzky (Canada) and Brian M. Cassidy (U.S.) the team that directed Patron Saints (Tiff 2011, Rotterdam 2012) are are all in the Forum.
4 films are in the Forum Expanded:
Chris Kennedy’s 349 (For Sol LeWitt)(1min long!) in Tiff 2011 Wavelength Program: Schedule
American Colour, Tiff 2011 Wavelength Program: Schedule
Road Movie by Elle Flanders and Tamira Sawatzkystarring Melissa Leo (Frozen River) Tiff 2011 Future Projections: Schedule, a 6-channel installation produced by The National Film Board of Canada. Elle Flanders’ documentary Zero Degrees of Separation was screened in the Forum section of the Berlin Festival in 2005.
The Tiny Ventriloquist by Steve Reinke, (with contribution from James Richards). The installation will be presented at the McLuhan Salon of the Canadian Embassy
In Berlinale Shorts Competition, The Man That Got Away by Trevor Anderson is his second film in this section (2009 The Island). His doc short The High Leve Bridge was in Sundance in 2010.
All we have to do now is wait to see which prizes go to them! Last year Canadian productions came away with three.
Perspective Canada will present 16 titles at the Market:
Café de Flore - Jean-Marc Vallée, Films Distribution, France
China Heavyweight (Straight from Sundance) - doc - Yung Chang Cat & Docs, France & EyeSteelFilms
Décharge (Trash) - Benoit Pilon, eOne

We Canadians are often stereotyped as nice and polite, and even our bank robbers follow this pattern. Edwin Boyd is a biopic of Canada’s most famous thief, and it is a solid first feature, written and directed by Nathan Morlando. It follows a fairly standard biopic plot: we are introduced to Boyd (Scott Speedman), and his struggle to earn a living and provide for his wife and children after serving in WWII. He wants to be an actor and singer, but can’t afford classes. But what he does have is good looks and charm, and he uses those to rob banks. He is caught, jailed, breaks out of jail and forms the Boyd Gang, who wreaked havoc for years before being caught again.
Speedman continues to grow as an actor. The camera often rests on his face, and you can see the wheels turning in his eyes, not...

"A largely non-competitive festival, Toronto gives out very few awards," notes Twitch editor Todd Brown, "the most prominent of which are the People's Choice picks, three awards given based on audience ratings of the films with one each awarded to the Midnight Madness section, the Real to Reel documentary section and the overall festival at large." And as an executive producer on The Raid, his congratulations to the film's team for winning the People's Choice Award for Midnight Madness are particularly jubilant. The runners-up are Adam Wingard's You're Next and Bobcat Goldthwait's God Bless America, and roundups on both are on the way, but first:

As I sit here in the Toronto airport waiting for my flight back to New York City, Tiff has announced their winners of the 2011 fest. The top prize, recently given to films that would go on to win Best Picture including The King’s Speech and Slumdog Millionaire, has gone to something unexpected. In my ten days and almost 40 screenings attended, I didn’t hear a single person mention it.
The Cadillac People’s Choice Award, voted on by fest audience was the drama Where Do We Go Now?, directed by Nadine Labaki. The official synopsis reads, “set against the backdrop of a war-torn country, [the film] tells the heartwarming tale of a group of women’s determination to protect their isolated, mine-encircled community from the pervasive and divisive outside forces that threaten to destroy it from within.” I supposed we can look for it in the Best Foreign Oscar race.
