'Mickey 17' Fans Need to Stream Bong Joon-ho's 'Mother'
Image
Since his feature debut in 2000, Bong Joon-ho has established himself as one of the finest filmmakers in the world, with a string of acclaimed international hits to his name. He's brought his inimitable style to everything from monster movies like 2006's The Hostto sci-fi action like 2013's Snowpiercer, and the Oscar-night dominance of 2019's Parasite, his most successful work yet. While pretty much every movie he's made has been rapturously received, some have gotten more attention than others, and one of his most overlooked films received its American premiere 15 years ago.

That would be Mother, Bong's twisty, darkly funny homage to Alfred Hitchcock, which premiered in the US in February 2010, after its Cannes premiere the previous year. While met with the usual critical acclaim upon release, it's not often mentioned alongside his most notable projects, but still bears most of the hallmarks of its brilliant director. With Bong's most recent film,...

Lanterns Director Teases Humor And Promises The Show "Doesn't Lack Its Sci-Fi Magic" Despite Grounded Setting
Image
Cameras are currently rolling on Lanterns, and Slow Horses' James Hawes has been tapped to helm the first two episodes.

Those will set the tone for Green Lantern's corner of the Dcu, and thanks to Ryan Reynolds frequently reminding people how bad the 2011 movie was, they'll also be vital in convincing people to give the Corps another chance.

Hawes has an impressive list of credits to his name; as well as directing the Rami Malek-led The Amateur, he's previously worked on shows like Snowpiercer, The Alienist, Black Mirror, and Raised by Wolves.

Discussing his vision for Lanterns with Collider, Hawes said, "There is a very particular humor that they brought to this. It's very rooted in a way that I like to think we achieve with Slow Horses, that I achieve with things like my Black Mirror's, and yet there is a rich vein of humor running through it.

The Testaments casts two book characters we've been waiting for
Image
The world of The Handmaid’s Tale is set to grow with the sequel series The Testaments. While the show is still to be greenlit by Hulu, casting is well underway. Not only do we have our three leads, but Deadline has reported that two of the supporting roles have been cast, and they are roles that we’ve been waiting for.

This is a story that follows three main characters, and all their stories interconnect as they all end up in the same place in Gilead. That means they come across other people in Gilead, and the girls are being raised to be Wives of the State.

Something to keep in mind when watching The Testaments is that, if it follows the timeline of the book, these girls don’t know the world before Gilead. They were too young when Gilead was formed to retain memories of the life before.

‘Mickey 17’ Passes Final Global Box Office Milestone Without Earning Back Its Budget
Image
After a largely disappointing half a month in theaters worldwide, director Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17 has passed what will likely be its only major global box office milestone. The science-fiction film, which debuted theatrically after a suspicious delay, had an underwhelming debut a few months ago. Despite the presence of star Robert Pattinson and largely positive reviews, Mickey 17 struggled to find an audience. This is perhaps why Warner Bros. decided to debut it on PVOD platforms a mere 17 days after its theatrical debut — a window this short is normally reserved for movies that have truly underperformed at the box office.

Mickey 17 has made just around $40 million domestically and another $70 million from overseas markets, for a cumulative global haul of $110 million. Produced on a reported budget of around $120 million, the movie would’ve had to gross around $250 million worldwide to break even, at least according to the rule of thumb.

Get a new look at the Ironheart series with images of Riri Williams in the new suit
Image
2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever did the usual Marvel thing and laid some ground for future projects that had been announced. Other than the sequel establishing Shuri as the new Black Panther, the Ryan Coogler film also introduced a college student who would be taking up the mantle of Tony Stark with her own brand of Iron armor. The setup could lend itself to both the Ironheart show and the planned Armor Wars project, but after some years, the studio is finally set to premiere the series this summer on June 24 on Disney+.

The social media for DiscussingFilm has unveiled the release date as well as posted a couple of new looks at the Ironheart series with some preview images of Riri Williams in her new Iron Man-inspired suit. You can get a look at the newly released images below.

Which Fantasy & Sci-Fi Franchises Are Influenced By Dune?
Image
The millions of people who've seen the recent Dunemovies without having read Frank Herbert's book beforehand probably noticed an overwhelming number of similarities to other storied franchises. That's not a coincidence. The 1965 novel isn't the origin point of sci-fi or fantasy literature, but it's arguably the most successful and influential in its category.

Dune represented a huge step up in terms of epic worldbuilding and episodic storytelling, and it introduced plot arcs, character archetypes, and genre elements that are so common today that Herbert's originality can easily be taken for granted. Countless books, TV series, and films have been inspired by Dune, including Star Trek, The Chronicles of Riddick, Miyazaki's Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, and even Futurama. The following franchises, however, did more than riff on Herbert's ideas or parody the tropes he created. Each one has such strong parallels to Dune that without it, they may never have existed.

Mickey 17 Review: Bong Joon Ho’s Sci-Fi Comedy is an Oddly Manipulative, Self-Congratulatory Parable
Image
Is Mark Ruffalo giving a Trump impression? It’s early into Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17 when the actor struts into the frame in a velvety blazer, wife Ylfa (Toni Collette) in tow, gloating as a crowd stands and claps like he’s the second coming of Christ. Ruffalo is Kenneth Marshall, leader of some cult-adjacent Church and one-time presidential candidate behind a new space mission designed to yank humanity from a near-inhospitable Earth and drop it onto Niflheim, a planet in some remote corner of the galaxy. A hopeless narcissist surrounded by a cabal of yes-men armed with cameras immortalizing his every move, he speaks with impossibly white teeth forever bared in a self-congratulatory grimace, nostrils flared, vowels ever so slightly drawn out. In a film ostensibly following not one but two (!) Robert Pattinsons, it’s Ruffalo that takes center stage. And if his diction and mannerisms instantly...

‘Mickey 17’ Review: Robert Pattinson and Robert Pattinson Star in Bong Joon Ho’s Best English-Language Film So Far
Image
You may not have noticed this unless you’ve watched his films closely, but Bong Joon Ho has a few quibbles with capitalism. It’s true! I know it can be hard to focus on subtext when the former Captain America is lamenting the fact that “babies taste best,” but watch “Snowpiercer” for a second time and you might just be able to tease out a well-sheathed critique of the social order in its story about an economically segregated train where the people in the lower classes are forced to eat each other alive while their rich overlords in the front cars are free to enjoy the eternal rewards of the locomotive’s self-perpetuating engine.

Ditto “Okja,” which hides a damning rebuke of corporate greed behind a winsome fable about a girl and her pet superpig, “The Host,” whose monster feasts on the industrialized world’s collective disregard for its most vulnerable communities,...

20 Best Movies Like Mad Max: Fury Road
Image
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga delivers the long-anticipated origin story of a beloved Mad Max: Fury Road character, reminding fans of one of the best action movies ever. Released 30 years after the last Mad Max with Mel Gibson, Mad Max: Fury Road revived the iconic franchise through its uniquely shot, fast-paced story. Set in the aftermath of an apocalypse that leaves Australia a barren wasteland, the movie follows Max as he joins the escape of a group of women from the terrifying warlord, Immortan Joe.

Since its release, Mad Max: Fury Road has raised the bar for the action genre in many respects, propelling fans to look for other equally electrifying action alternatives. Ranging from fellow post-apocalyptic wasteland tales to action movies that match Mad Max: Fury Road's anxiety-inducing energy, some films are a great match. It can be hard to top the iconic modern masterpiece, but...

Patrick Stewart Calls Filming ‘Doctor Strange 2’ Professor X Cameo ‘Frustrating and Disappointing’
Image
Patrick Stewart is speaking out against the rise of green screen acting, particularly within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The “X-Men” alum, who reprised his iconic role of Professor X in 2022’s “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” said during a recent appearance on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast that it’s “been challenging” acting “alone” with a green screen.

“I think the big scene, each one of the leading actors had the same experience. They were shot on their own,” Stewart said of his cameo. “It was frustrating and disappointing, but that’s how it has been. The last few years have been challenging.”

During the “Doctor Strange” sequel, Stewart appears alongside in another multiverse realm as a still-alive Charles Xavier Aka Professor X, serving on the Illuminati counsel with Mr. Fantastic (John Krasinski), Captain Marvel (Lashana Lynch), and Captain Britain (Hayley Atwell). Apparently, none of the actors were together for the scene.

10 Movie Happy Endings That Definitely Didn't Last Long
Image
Short-lived happy endings challenge viewers' expectations and reveal deeper themes and messages in films like 500 Days of Summer and Mad Max: Fury Road. Endings that seem happy initially may have dark undertones, such as those seen in Duel and The Truman Show. The resolutions in movies like Barbie and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 are short-lived, as new challenges and evils await the characters in their respective worlds.

For as long as film criticism has existed, audiences and critics alike have had a fascination for movie happy endings that definitely didn't last long. Also known as secretly dark happy endings, these are the finales that favor the protagonist - but only for a short amount of time during or after the third act. While these movies ended happily in their own ways, deeper analysis reveals that their final moments of triumph, justice, or peace are ultimately short-lived.

Movies Like ‘Society Of The Snow’ To Watch
Image
J.A. Bayona’s Society of the Snow is a terrifying yet hopeful tale of survival based on the book of the same name about the survivors of the 1972 Uruguayan Flight 571 plane crash in the Andes. This isn’t the first time a film has been made on this story, yet the 50-year-old tale somehow remains relevant today. What Bayona excels at is eliciting a certain harrowing, and simultaneously optimistic feeling within the viewer that perhaps no other filmmaker can do as well. Society of the Snow may be familiar in its story, but there’s something very new to the way it’s been presented, and on a second watch, it struck me how this could’ve been so tedious and disturbing to watch, but it’s simply a humanistic film. What makes Society of the Snow so compelling is its subtle dialogue and compact camera angles that make us feel for all the characters.

Happy New Year! ‘Terror Train’ Dares to Ask Whether Dying Is Preferable to Watching a Bad Magic Show
Image
On Friday nights — and special occasions!— IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.

First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.

Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.

The Pitch: You Know, Getting Murdered on a Train Might Still Be Better Than Going to Times Square

The underwhelming New Year’s Eve party is a universal human experience if there ever was one. The holiday is ostensibly the biggest night of the year for debauchery, but burnout, outlandish expectations, and rowdy crowds often turn it into a letdown that makes it a little easier to trade our holiday cheer in for January discipline. But no matter what disappointing experience comes your way tonight, you can take comfort...

‘Concrete Utopia’ Director Um Tae-Hwa, Star Lee Byung-Hun Talk South Korean Apartment Culture & Post-Apocalyptic Pic’s Black Comedy – Contenders International
Image
Like the Japanese with their Godzilla movies, the Koreans are partial to a bit of post-apocalyptic social satire, and Um Tae-Hwa’s box office hit Concrete Utopia follows a path trailblazed in 2013 by Bong Joon-ho’s cult sci-fi Snowpiercer. Adapted from the popular webtoon Pleasant Outcast by Kim Soong Nyung and partly inspired by British writer J.G. Ballard’s 1975 novel High-Rise, it centers on a Korean apartment block whose residents become lawless after a terrifying earthquake rips through the country.

Although local superstar Lee Byung-hun steals the show as Yeong-tak, a charismatic rebel leader with a sinister secret, the story is seen through the eyes of a young couple — Ming-seong (Park Seo-joon) and Myeong-hwa (Park Bo-young) — who wake up one morning to find that their lives, and in fact the whole world, have changed forever.

‘Concrete Utopia’ Review: Even the Apocalypse Can’t Stop a Strong Condo Board
Image
“Can’t people just be humane, peace-loving citizens?,” Min-sung (Park Seo-joon) asks at the beginning of “Concrete Utopia,” wondering aloud why the hundreds of apocalypse survivors using his apartment building as makeshift shelter can’t simply share resources and work together.

It’s a lovely sentiment, but writer/director Tae-hwa Eom appears to take his protagonist’s rhetorical question as a personal attack. From there on out, he devotes every subsequent frame of his film to explaining why humans are apparently incapable of doing anything good for each other. In the film’s view, only one human institution is strong enough to stand steadfast when our innate barbarism rears its ugly head: the condo board.

“Concrete Utopia” opens with a brutal earthquake that reduces Seoul to rubble and instantly forces its surviving population to revert to a hunter-gatherer society. The film wisely wastes zero time explaining why the disaster took place,...

Korean Mega-star Song Kang-Ho on the Difference Between Good and Bad Acting
Image
There was a time when any great international actor tended to be reduced to their perceived Hollywood counterpart whenever they were discussed in the U.S. press. Under this outmoded prerogative, Korean screen icon Song Kang-ho easily could be described as his country’s simultaneous answer to both Marlon Brando and Tom Hanks, such is his seemingly contradictory blend of sardonic physicality, fearsome technique, lyrical humanism and overwhelming likability. Today, thankfully, it is sufficient to simply describe Song Kang-ho as Song Kang-ho: “One of the protean greats of world cinema — a master, end of,” as Tilda Swinton, a co-star with Song in Bong Joon Ho’s Snowpiercer (2013), once summed him up in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

For global movie buffs, arguably one of the most exciting stories of the past 30 years has been the renaissance and growing global reach of Korean cinema — and no figure has been more...

10 TV Shows That Were Shockingly Canceled After Being Renewed
Image
TV shows getting abruptly canceled after being renewed is frustrating for fans and those involved in production, as seen in examples like The Society and Glow. External factors like cost-cutting, low ratings, and creative changes can lead to the cancellation of renewed shows, such as Roseanne and Snowpiercer. Strikes and budgeting issues have also affected the fate of TV shows like A League of Their Own.

It has become strangely common for TV shows to be abruptly canceled after being renewed for a new season. Every year, a vast number of TV shows get canceled by the network or streaming platform, but it's more devastating when a show is renewed, and then canceled anyway. This is frustrating not just for fans of the show who are invested in it, but also for those involved in the production. At a time when so many shows get canceled before they have a proper conclusion,...

The Only Major Actors Still Alive From 1979's The Amityville Horror
Image
"The Amityville Horror" is one of the definitive haunted house films, a classic tale about paranormal activity terrorizing a suburban family with swarming flies, mysterious voices, and sudden illness. Even the windows resemble ominous eyes peering down on the unsuspecting victims. The movie taps into the religious undertones popularized by other 1970s releases such as "The Exorcist" and "The Omen," suggesting there is a Satanic force at work that must be destroyed.

Eventually, the new owners George and Kathy Lutz discover the horrifying history of their new home: Ronald DeFeo Jr. murdered his entire family with a rifle one year prior, a Satanic worshipper named John Ketchum once lived on the land, and the house itself was built on a Shinnecock burial ground.

Despite receiving mixed reviews for elements like the cheesy portrayal of a possessed George, "The Amityville Horror" ended up having a significant impact on the horror genre.

Barbie Director Makes Case for More Intimacy Coordinators on Film Sets
Image
Barbie director Greta Gerwig makes a strong case for why intimacy coordinators on set are an obvious choice.

Gerwig sat down for an interview with Vanity Fair on Nov. 13. As the topic moved to paradigm shifts in the industry, such as the #MeToo movement, Covid and the strikes, Gerwig discussed things that should be common sense but that the industry, and even herself, are only just coming to realize. "There’s plenty of stuff that happened in my life, when I look back at it. I’m like, wait a minute. That was not okay. Just a million little things. It almost didn’t register. Which might be generational, you know? I think one substantive change is intimacy coordinators. They make perfect sense."

Gerwig makes a poignant analogy in the case of fight scenes. "It’s like a fight choreographer. Nobody would ever say,...

Snowpiercer's Enduring Themes of Classism and Survival Keep the Story Relevant Today
Image
Snowpiercer is a dystopian film that stands out due to its subject of a non-stop train housing the last survivors of a global disaster. The movie portrays a microcosmic world that reflects society's worst attributes, with a clear divide between the poor and the wealthy elites. Snowpiercer explores themes of survival, compassion, and the extremes to which people are willing to go in order to maintain power, making it a thought-provoking and visually stunning film.

Dystopian films are quite a feat of storytelling, especially when done right. On the one hand, movies within the genre tend to be entertaining, action-packed thrill rides since they usually place their protagonists in a vivid, torn-apart world that requires a sharp sense of survival. The flip side is that their audiences are also presented with a hypothetical, worst-case future (or present), one intended to invoke a robust emotional and introspective response by cutting to...

All the TV Shows Canceled in 2023
Image
TV show cancellations are nothing new. Beloved shows have been canceled before fans were ready for them to end for decades. But in a time where streaming services have begun to fully erase their own content in addition to canceling shows before they have a chance to find their footing, the future of the shows we love and our ability to enjoy them feels even more out of our hands than it did before. Cancellation doesn’t just mean that our favorite series is coming to an end, now it means that it could be erased entirely from existence.

Even with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) failing to meet the Writers Guild of America’s (WGA) reasonable terms and prolonging the strike in addition to all of the network and streamer mergers, there have been plenty of series renewals thus far. Unfortunately, there are many that...

Upcoming Chris Evans Movies to Watch For
Image
From Captain America and Buzz Lightyear to the Human Torch and even just playing himself (in Free Guy), Chris Evans has taken on some iconic roles. The Boston native has gone from that recognizable face in small efforts like The Perfect Score and Not Another Teen Movie to a quintessential Marvel-a-lister.

In 2019, Evans appeared in four feature films, including two MCU hits and the surprising box office smash Knives Out. He's everywhere; we can't wait to see what's next. Besides his beloved role as Steve Rogers (which Evans likely won't return to), the actor has also extended his reach to other film adaptations of comic books and graphic novels, such as Tmnt (2007), Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010) and Snowpiercer (2013).

In addition to gracing the screen, Evans made his directorial debut in 2014 with the romantic drama Before We Go, which he also produced and starred in. He also made his Broadway...

Chris Evans’ New Netflix Movie Creates His Worst Rotten Tomatoes Streak In 13 Years
Image
Pain Hustlers is Chris Evans' third consecutive "rotten" movie, marking his worst streak since 2010. The movies in this streak, including Pain Hustlers, are big-budget crime films made for streaming services. Critics have pointed out the polished look and weak screenplays of these movies, but Evans' performances has been praised.

Pain Hustlers is the latest big-budget streaming movie starring Chris Evans, but the film marks the actor's worst Rotten Tomatoes streak in over a decade. Evans has become best known for playing Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, featuring in 11 films as the character in some capacity, be it a cameo or starring role. As a result, he is one of the highest-grossing actors of the 2010s, with Evans also earning significant critical acclaim outside the MCU in hit movies like Knives Out and Snowpiercer. However, in the time since Chris Evans left Marvel, his movies have repeated a disappointing...

Mickey 17 Release Date, Cast, Director And More Info
Image
Robert Pattinson first made his sci-fi debut in Christopher Nolan's "Tenet" back in 2020, but he hasn't dipped back into the genre since. Bong Joon-ho generated a lot of buzz with his 2019 psychological thriller "Parasite," which swept the Oscars, but has since been quiet. As it turns out, the duo are teaming up on a brand new sci-fi film, "Mickey 17," that's slated to premiere next spring.

"Mickey 17" is a literary adaptation, but Bong Joon-ho is known for taking adaptations off the rails, so there's no telling what he has in store. However, one thing is for sure — the filmmaker will be stepping outside of his comfort zone for this project. The cast features lots of American movie stars, a rarity for Bong, who has worked with primarily Korean casts in most of his films (with notable exceptions like "Snowpiercer" and "Okja"). This promises to be an exciting release,...

Sinister 3 Gets Update From Director, 8 Years After Critically Panned Sequel
Image
Sinister director Scott Derrickson is still interested in developing Sinister 3 despite the disappointing reviews of Sinister 2. Derrickson believes that there are special aspects of the Sinister franchise that merit further exploration but acknowledges that improvements would need to be made. While it may seem unlikely, there is still a chance for Sinister 3 to be developed, as the success of other long-awaited sequels proves that there is still a possibility for success.

Sinister director Scott Derrickson is still interested in developing Sinister 3. The original movie was released in 2012 and stars Ethan Hawke as true crime writer Ellison Oswalt in a world devolving into horror. Despite the original's success, the sequel was released in 2015 to disappointing reviews. After Sinister 2, Sinister 3 has been hinted at, though its future appeared to be bleak. Derrickson has been focusing on other projects, including Doctor Strange, the Snowpiercer show, and The Black Phone.

Derrickson, however,...

‘Kill’ Review: A Train, Two Commandos and 40 Thieves Add Up to One Bloody Action Bonanza
Image
Years ago, Indian director Nikhil Nagesh Bhat fell asleep on a cross-country train ride, only to discover upon reaching his destination that the cars on either side of his had been robbed by armed bandits, known as “dacoits.” The heist couldn’t have been too intense, or it would have awakened him, but it got the helmer’s gears turning about what a truly terrifying train raid might look like. The answer: “Kill,” in which a crew of 40-odd thieves board a train, intending to steal passengers’ watches and phones, then turn bloodthirsty after running into a pair of hardheaded commandos.

As brutal a film as the country has ever produced, “Kill” is a shockingly graphic action showcase from an industry that typically plays violence in a more cartoony register. All told, “Overkill” probably would have been a better title, considering how far Bhat takes each and every altercation, milking it for maximum vengeance.

"I Totally Understand": Sex Education's Intimacy Coordinator On Criticisms Of Industry Role
Image
Intimacy coordination in Hollywood, although often contested, is a vital tool to ensure the safety and comfort of actors during intimate scenes. The initial skepticism about intimacy coordination stems from fears that it would disrupt the acting and directing process, but it actually enhances the level of detail and fosters open communication and consent. The pushback from actors like Sean Bean and Michael Caine reveals that intimacy coordination is not universally accepted but should be embraced as a standard practice to prioritize the well-being of actors on set.

Sex Education intimacy coordinator David Thackeray unpacks the critiques of intimacy coordination. Since its run began in 2019, Sex Education has been one of the keystone examples of employing intimacy coordination on television. As a show about sex, in all its different forms, Sex Education took great care behind-the-scenes to make sure intimacy coordinators were used to ensure the consent, safety, and comfort of the actors.

“We Never Had That In My Day”: Michael Caine Questions The Need For Intimacy Coordinators On Set
Image
Intimacy coordinators are a newer role in Hollywood, responsible for choreographing and executing intimate scenes while ensuring actors feel safe and boundaries are respected. They have been introduced to major productions. Michael Caine questions the need for intimacy coordinators, saying that the industry never had them in his day. He implies that they interfere with scenes and expresses relief that he doesn't play lovers anymore. Caine's viewpoint reflects a misunderstanding of the importance of intimacy coordination in promoting actor safety. Many prominent voices still downplay the need for such measures, but the demand for intimacy coordinators is growing.

Actor Michael Caine questions the need for intimacy coordinators on sets. The role of intimacy coordinator is a newer title in Hollywood, referring to the person who helps to choreograph and execute intimate scenes, which can involve sex, kissing, or other in-the-nude moments. Intimacy coordinators are responsible for making actors feel...

Chris Evans Reveals Biggest Fear Taking On Captain America Role
Image
Chris Evans opened up about why he was hesitant to take on the role of Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Evans admitted he feared that his career would be over after taking on the Marvel role. While filming the 2011 movie Captain America: The First Avenger, which was the fifth MCU film, the actor detailed how he felt. “This is it. I just signed my death warrant; my life’s over. I can’t believe I did this. This isn’t the career I wanted,” he said. “The biggest thing I was worried about was making sh*tty f**king movies. I don’t want to make sh*tty movies and be contractually obligated to make garbage.” Evans’ fears were eased when he realized the Captain America movies were good.

Chris Evans Admits He ‘Didn’t Quite Get’ the ‘Snowpiercer’ Script — but He Always Trusted Bong Joon Ho
Image
When “Snowpiercer” hit theaters in 2013, it kicked off an incredible decade for Bong Joon Ho that culminated in his historic Oscar win for “Parasite.” But one of the film’s stars wasn’t convinced that the project was a sure thing.

In a new interview with GQ, Chris Evans reflected on the experience of working with Bong on the dystopian film. He revealed that he didn’t initially understand the script and had questions about the rules of the world in which it takes place.

“When I first read the script, I didn’t quite get it,” Evans said. “I was like, ‘So…what?’ Whenever it’s a movie that’s world-building, you’re creating a completely separate environment. There’s just kind of a conceit that you have to say, ‘Ok, so everyone just accepts this, this is just how it is? No one is kind of outraged that this is the structure?...

Sci-Fi Movies That Will Blow Fans Away In 2024
Image
As visions of various 21st-century promises and perils alike converge upon us at once — from space travel to possible extraterrestrial contact to artificial intelligence to the looming societal threat posed by climate change — the science fiction genre finds itself at arguably its most urgent and crucial point in history. In recent years, the movies, in particular, have seen a kind of artistic renaissance for the genre, with various first-rate auteurs contemplating our technological future in works ranging from the moving to the thought-provoking to the brilliantly satirical.

In 2024, that renaissance will continue at full steam. The next year in film will bring us an incredibly vast and diverse range of new sci-fi flicks, whether coming from old savants like Bong Joon-ho, Denis Villeneuve, and Alex Garland, or genre debutants like Joshua Oppenheimer, Bruno Dumont, and even Francis Ford Coppola. Here, we've compiled a list of 19 upcoming science fiction films to...

‘Creative Control’ Promises That Sexual Mediocrity Will Outlive the A.I. Revolution
Image
On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.

First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.

Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.

The Pitch: If This Is What A.I. Sex Looks Like, Maybe We Have Nothing to Worry About?

Cinematic dystopias come in many forms. Ridley Scott looked to classic film noir and Asian urban architecture to craft his fallen neon hellscape in “Blade Runner.” Bong Joon-ho juxtaposed railroad opulence with an arctic wasteland in “Snowpiercer.” And for “Creative Control,” Benjamin Dickinson dared to imagine what would happen if characters from a Noah Baumbach movie could make their own interactive porn.

Dickinson’s 2015 sci-fi drama obviously isn’t a dystopian film in the conventional sense.

Chris Evans Praises Practical Effects Of His 2013 Sci-Fi, Negatively Compares It To Marvel
Image
Chris Evans praises the practical sets of 2013's Snowpiercer, a science-fiction movie from director Bong Joon Ho. Evans explains that he liked being able to fully experience the practical set and become immersed in the environment, which is different from his experience in the MCU with its heavy use of green screen. Evans' role in Snowpiercer may be overshadowed by his time as Captain America, but it serves as a strong example of his power as a leading man and remains an underrated addition to his filmography.

Chris Evans compares working on 2013's Snowpiercer to his time at Marvel, praising the film's reliance on practical sets. Directed by Bong Joon Ho, Snowpiercer chronicles the lives of the last people on Earth, who endlessly circle the globe in a speeding train to survive a new ice age. Evans, who is now best known for playing Captain America in the MCU, stars in the movie as Curtis,...

Chris Evans Says ‘Snowpiercer’ Practical Effects Were ‘Incredibly Helpful’ Compared to Marvel Green Screens
Image
Chris Evans might have had trouble “wrapping his head” around Bong Joon-ho’s “Snowpiercer” script, but at least the Marvel star could wrap his hands around everything on set. The “Captain America” actor revealed to GQ in a new interview (which you can watch in full in the below video) that starring in Bong’s 2013 post-apocalyptic sci-fi film proved to be a starkly different and more tangible experience than leading the Marvel ensemble movies.

Evans played a dissenting lower-class citizen in “Snowpiercer,” where the world’s remaining population live on an ever-moving train. “We had those cars on Gimbals, these little like … they just do like a subtle movement. So a lot of boat legs at the end of the day,” Evans said. “You are kind of wobbly, getting back to your hotel room.”

He added, “[It was] incredibly helpful with the tangible environment as opposed to Marvel when you’re talking to green screens,...

Chris Evans says he doesn’t plan to return to the MCU anytime soon and sides with Tarantino’s argument about movie stars
Image
Chris Evans started his career with a bevy of projects, but he’s now cemented in pop culture as Captain America thanks to his run as the Star-Spangled Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe starting in 2011 with Captain America: The First Avenger and ending in 2019 with Avengers: Endgame. Evans can be seen in the upcoming Netflix film, Pain Hustlers, which co-stars Emily Blunt, and the actor has recently been profiled by GQ magazine reflecting on his career.

Although Anthony Mackie is set to take up the mantle, fans would assuredly miss Steve Rogers as the Og Cap. Variety reports on Evans’ response to the inevitable question of if he’ll ever return to the Marvel universe. He replies, “I’ll never say never, just because it was such a wonderful experience. But I’m also very precious with it. It’s something that I am very proud of. And like I said,...

Snowpiercer season 4 is still searching for a new home following cancelation
Image
It’s been over a year since the third season of Snowpiercer wrapped up on TNT but there’s still no word on when fans might get to see the fourth and final season. Due to cost-cutting measures, it was announced earlier this year that Snowpiercer season 4 wouldn’t be airing on TNT but that Tomorrow Studios would be shopping the series to another network.

While speaking with Deadline, Tomorrow Studios CEO Marty Adelstein offered an update on the state of Snowpiercer. “We have Season 4 in the can, which hasn’t been seen yet,” Adelstein said. “We’re talking to a number of buyers about buying the first three seasons and also Season 4 which is probably our best season; we’re in the middle of that.” He added that they’re also searching for a new home for Let the Right One In, the former Showtime series that was canceled earlier this year.

Snowpiercer Season 4 Gets Update As Completed Episodes Continue Search For Home
Image
Snowpiercer season 4 was canceled in January, and the show searching for a new home. Producers hope to find a buyer for all four seasons. Producer Marty Adelstein reveals that all episodes of Snowpiercer season 4 are already filmed.

Snowpiercer season 4 gets an update from producers, as the show continues its search for a new home. An adaptation of both the 2013 Bong Joon-hoo film of the same name and the French novel Le Transperceneige, the post-apocalyptic drama has had a long saga of development and unexpected turns as it moved through development and built a devoted following. That continued into the fourth installment of the TNT series, intended to be its last, as it received disappointing news at the start of the year. As part of a tax write-off for Warner Bros. Discovery, which owns TNT, Snowpiercer season 4 was surprisingly canceled.

In an interview with Deadline, producer Marty Adelstein gave an update...
