Power Rangers are morphing back to Disney—sort of. As of March 19, 2025, a new live-action Power Rangers series is in development for Disney+, marking a surprising return for the 30-year-old franchise. Hasbro Entertainment, which owns the IP, has teamed up with Disney+ and 20th Century Television to produce this “reinvention,” aiming to hook both nostalgic fans and newbies. Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz, the masterminds behind Percy Jackson and the Olympians, are in talks to write, showrun, and executive produce, per The Wrap.
But with no storyline, cast, or release date yet, is this a morphin’ triumph—or a cautious step back into a grid Disney once abandoned? Let’s break down the comeback, Disney’s rocky Ranger history, and what this means for the franchise’s future.

Power Rangers Samurai receives a lot of flak these days from its disillusioned fanbase. But unbeknownst to them, the series still made history with a list of franchise firsts. An adaptation of the Japanese Tokusatsu series, Samurai Sentai Shinkenger, Power Rangers Samurai ran for two seasons, with the final season renamed as Power Rangers Super Samurai.
The Nighloks and their leader, Master Xandred, are the face of the show's antagonistic force. They wreak havoc in the human world, looking to sow sorrow, which will raise the mythical Senzu river and allow the monsters to roam the Earth freely. With many of these villains culturally linked with silly Japanese folklore, their powers range from tricky to absurd. And sometimes, they are plain old weird.

The Red Ranger leads the Power Rangers, and that has been set in stone since Mighty Morphin Power Rangers made its debut in the West. There is another set rule in the world of Power Rangers, that there are only certain colors that a woman ranger can wear. There has been a slew of Pink Rangers, a few Yellow Rangers, and the odd Blue Ranger. There is also the fact that there have been more than a few female Red Rangers.

The new Power Rangers film, sources reveal, is set to have a female lead, and that has caused a lot of outrage and confusion online, as if the Rangers have never found themselves led by a female character. However, there seems to be some pushback with how ‘woke’ the film is allegedly getting.

Power Rangers Samurai was the first show Haim Saban produced after the dissolution of Disney-owned Bvs Entertainment, which put the producer back at the helm of the Power Rangers franchise. Using the Japanese show Sentai Shinkenger as the plot's framework, the series ran for two seasons, bringing lighthearted action and the widescreen HD format to Power Rangers fans worldwide.
Power Rangers Samurai infuses bushido, or the samurai code of conduct, into the team dynamics, creating an all-new look for the franchise. Although swordfights and martial arts are nothing new, the show's borderline cultural appropriation seems too much on the nose. However, what Power Rangers Samurai lacks in plot and characterizations, it makes up for with its big fight scenes, which is where the show earns its big bucks.

Quick Links Power Rangers (2017) is One of My Favorite Superhero Movies Ever I Know Why Audiences Didn't Respond Well to Power Rangers (2017) Power Rangers (2017) Should Have Been the Start of a Franchise
I enjoy Power Rangers in virtually any medium it comes in. Naturally, I watch the television series like any other fan, but I also love the superb comic books; I'm among the few who truly appreciated the online tabletop RPG Power Ranger Hyperforce, and I've played and enjoyed plenty of the admittedly awful Power Rangers video games. When it comes to the movies, I grew up with Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie and Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie, but while nostalgic, neither of these films hold a handle to Power Rangers (2017).
While it was a box office and critical flop, the 2017 Power Rangers movie is a masterpiece and a more open mind from fans could have turned it into a franchise.

The 1990s were a good time to be a fan of Japanese pop culture. After the '80s made gamers out of millions of kids thanks to Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog, it was the '90s when anime started to become mainstream in the U.S. (even if kids didn't know it at the time) thanks to "Pokémon" becoming a worldwide cultural phenomenon. (That and "Sailor Moon" and "Dragon Ball Z" turning kids and teens into lifelong fans of the medium.)
But it wasn't just animation. In live-action, "Power Rangers" brought tokusatsu fun to the West and started a hugely influential superhero franchise that, yes, is still very good. When the production rights to Power Rangers were bought back by Saban Brands in 2010, fans were excited to see the first series of the New Saban Era. Power Rangers Samurai was adapted from the Japanese tokusatsu series Samurai Sentai Shinkenger, following a team of Rangers based around the themes of samurai and family legacy. Both Samurai and Shinkenger are notable for being the first entry in their respective series to be shot in HD.

For 30 years, the Power Rangers franchise has delivered fun, action-packed adventures following a team of multi-colored heroes defending the earth from evil. After the third season of Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, the franchise began adapting new Super Sentai (the Japanese tokusatsu series) series for Power Rangers, introducing new suits, zords, and after Power Rangers In Space, a new cast every year. While the average Power Rangers team consists of five Rangers, with the sixth Ranger being introduced later on, some series featured a larger Ranger team.
Power Rangers S.P.D. was the first series to feature more than six Rangers consistently as part of the team. After that, Power Rangers continued to feature larger amounts of Rangers throughout the Disney era, the New Saban era, and the Hasbro era. The Power Rangers franchise has run for 30 years, with new teams, characters, suits, weapons, and themes being regularly introduced. With over 100 characters taking up the Ranger mantle, it's easy for them all to blur together. While the Red Ranger always tends to get the most focus in their respective series, there is underrated value in the Green Ranger.
The Red, Blue, and Yellow Rangers are consistent members of almost every iteration of the Power Rangers, but the Green Rangers come up slightly less often, with Power Rangers In Space, Wild Force, Dino Thunder, Operation Overdrive, Ninja Steel, and Beast Morphers not featuring Green Rangers in their team lineup. The Green Ranger often plays a less typical role in their team, sometimes being the smart one, sometimes being the comic relief, but from Tommy Oliver to Izzy Garcia, the Green Ranger is always a strong addition to any Power Rangers team.

Power Rangers has been going strong for 30 years, with continuity divided into five different eras since 1993. The New Saban Era and the Hasbro Era are the last two stages of this franchise, and they constitute the last 14 years of Power Rangers shows. Power Rangers Samurai doesn't have the same devoted fanbase as other additions to the Power Rangers franchise. However, Power Rangers Samurai still has its charms. With a lovable cast and intriguing villains, Power Rangers Samurai brings intense action with heart at its core to the TV screen.

Following the controversial installments of Power Rangers Samurai and Power Rangers Megaforce, Power Rangers Dino Charge was a return to form for the Power Rangers franchise. Spearheaded by the returning Chip Lynn as the head writer, both Power Rangers Dino Charge and Power Rangers Dino Supercharge feature strong stories, a wonderful cast, awesome Zord action, and a host of lovable characters.
Dino Charge is one of the best Power Rangers seasons of the 2010s, with some of the strongest episodes. Characters like Tyler, Shelby, Ivan, and Koda are all-time great Rangers, while Sledge and Heckyl rank among the franchise's best villains, with all of them receiving spectacular storylines. Not every episode of the two seasons is a winner, especially in Super Charge, but both contain plenty of stand-outs.

Dino Fury was a standout Power Rangers season. Dino Fury and Cosmic Fury featured a great team with well-developed characters. Cosmic Fury surpassed Dino Fury, offering an even better Power Rangers show.
I have been a Power Rangers fan for most of my life, but it was thanks to the shows newest team that I fell in love with the Super Sentai-based superheroes again after a series of disappointing seasons. Starting with Mighty Morphin in 1993, Power Rangers has built a massive legacy that includes 30 seasons of television, three theatrical movies, multiple specials, dozens of games, and hundreds of comic book issues. Watching Power Rangers in chronological order can be difficult, though, as the show has had highs and lows across three decades.

With the news regarding Paramount's Power Rangers reboot, fans are excited to see what's next for the franchise now that it will move onto the big screen. After 30 years, Power Rangers has been a TV franchise predominantly. However, its chronology also includes a couple of films that will now serve as predecessors for the anticipated reboot, such as Alpha's Magical Christmas or the most recent reboot 2017 film, Power Rangers.
Although the Power Rangers films aren't as good as the TV shows, at least according to a great deal of the fandom, they're equally as beloved. Besides, since some of them made it directly to video, only those who are really into the series know about them in the first place. Regardless, they make for a fun time for both new and old fans of this successful franchise.

Power Rangers is often derided for poor acting, but there are more than a few diamonds in the rough among the vast cast who have starred in the series. Talented actors better known for their roles in shows like iZombie, Jessica Jones, and Breaking Bad have appeared in Power Rangers and turned in performances on par with those given elsewhere.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers set the bar high for the franchise, establishing the foundation with its unique concept and iconic characters. The best Power Rangers series find a balance in appealing to kids and adults, offering zany villains, dramatic storylines, and powerful fights. Throughout its history, Power Rangers has made changes in ownership, storylines, and character lineups, catering to different parts of society at different times.

One of the defining aspects of Power Rangers is the action. All Power Rangers seasons feature a variety of forms of action, including zord combat, vehicle content, and fighting monsters with special weapons. Something that has always set the series apart from other kids' shows is its prominent showcasing of martial arts in its action scenes, with real martial artists often playing the Power Rangers.
Be it because their skill is tied into their backstories or because their actors are real martial artists and are capable of showing off, some Power Rangers are stronger fighters than others. When most fans think of the best martial artists in Power Rangers, their minds turn to Tommy Oliver and Jason Lee Scott, the original Green and Red Rangers, respectively. Tommy and Jason are fan favorites, but who are the other best fighters in Power Rangers?

Amongst many a Power Rangers fan, Christmas was not only the most wonderful time of year but more importantly, a time to add to your collection of Power Rangers merchandise. If you were lucky the toys for the upcoming season would have trickled into your local toy store, letting you get your first look at the newest team of Rangers.
Christmas also brought Power Rangers Christmas specials! Which means we got to see what our favorite heroes wanted for Christmas, Christmas themed monsters, and an oddly intense point of Power Rangers canon that might make Santa the most powerful character ever. Power Rangers has seen a wide range of releases, including movies, TV specials, and TV shows, with some being better than others. Some Power Rangers movies, such as Clash of the Red Rangers and The Legendary Battle: Extended Edition, are actually TV specials combined into one release. The best Power Rangers movie is Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie, which offered a big-budget adventure for the first time and remains a symbol of Power Rangers nostalgia.
From theatrical releases to TV specials, every Power Rangers movie did something different, but some were much better than others. Starting with 1993’s Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, the franchise has seen multiple movies, dozens of TV shows, and many other releases across different media. Power Rangers’ new Red Ranger, which debuts in Power Rangers Cosmic Fury, is an unprecedented event in the franchise’s 30-year-old history. Following the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers reunion in Power Rangers: Once Always, the franchise continues its 30-anniversary celebration with Cosmic Fury. The Power Rangers Dino Fury sequel will be the 30th Power Rangers season, a landmark for the franchise that began with Zordon recruiting “five teenagers with attitude” to fight Rita Repulsa in 1993.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always revisited several classic Power Rangers characters, including fan-favorites Bulk and Skull. Bulk (Paul Schrier) and Skull (Jason Narvy) have been a major part of the Power Rangers universe since its inception with Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. Serving as Power Rangers’ comic relief, Bulk and Sull created an impressive legacy within the Power Rangers franchise.
Unlike previous Power Rangers anniversary crossovers, Power Rangers: Once & Always's Easter eggs were mostly focused on the Mighty Morphin era. The Power Rangers reunion saw the returns of Zordon’s pupils and revisited iconic locations, such as Angel Grove. Therefore, at least some nod to Bulk and Skull in Power Rangers: Once & Always seemed likely.
Bulk & Skull Are In Power Rangers: Once & Always (But Not In Person)
Paul Schrier and Jason Narvy did not reprise their roles as Bulk and Skull, respectively, in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always.

Power Rangers’ new Red Ranger for Power Rangers Cosmic Fury is a landmark for the saga and a first for the 30-year-old franchise. As some of the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers reunite for Netflix’s Power Rangers: Once & Always 30th Anniversary Special, Power Rangers also continues with a new series – Cosmic Fury. The new Power Rangers series will work as a continuation of Power Rangers Dino Fury, except that the Power Rangers will now go to space.

Power Rangers will celebrate its 30th season next year and it’s tackling this anniversary season with a true throwback to the past For most of its life, each new Power Rangers season would feature a completely new cast, story line, and a new adaption of a Japanese Super Sentai series. This somewhat changed starting in 2011 with Power Rangers Samurai where the traditional season was broken into two smaller seasons but it was still business as usual. The only seasons that carried over a large majority of their casts were the first five, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Power Rangers Zeo, Power Rangers Turbo, and Power Rangers in Space.

Power Rangers is a legacy, joining a very small list of shows that run for such a long period of time, over 28 years! Throughout that time, the series has had its ups, its downs, and its mehs. I’ve been watching since the ripe age of 2 and have always loved the series, even in some of its more questionable moments.
But where does each season rank? With so many entries which ones stand as the best of the best of the best or which one and is a super mega dud? After a rewatch of all the seasons I ranked them all from worst to best with a little explanation of why they ended up where they did.
Quick note: I’m not including the “Mmpr Reversioning” as a season. It’s just a few Photoshop effects over a smattering of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Season 1 episodes, and it’s nothing to write home about.

For years Power Rangers basically had one continuity. Sure it was a little wonky and things didn’t quite all fit together but all the seasons basically took place in one universe.
Then Power Rangers Rpm happened.
At first it was assumed to be a series set far in the future but was confirmed in its team-up with Power Rangers Samurai that no, Rpm’s post apocalyptic world was its own continuity. Then Dino Charge ended with dinosaurs alive again so it was in its own universe. Ever since Power Rangers fans have wondered at the start of each season where that season could take place. Is it in the “Main” universe? It’s own universe? The Rpm universe? The Dino Charge universe? The Boom comics universe? One of the many, many offshoots?

The Power Rangers are being rebooted for the big screen and Paramount plans to change things up when it comes to the lineup of individuals who’ll be making up the Mighty Morphin team. And of the many changes set to take place, the studio is reportedly eyeing an Asian actress for the role of the Pink Ranger.

2017’s Power Rangers was supposed to usher in a new era for the beloved franchise. Hopes were high prior to the film’s release, with the trailers at least promising some impressive visual effects and sequels already being planned. But then it crashed and burned at the box office, making just $142 million on a budget of $105 million. Theories for its failure ranged from it being certified PG-13 to it being seen as a “junior league” imitation of a superhero movie. My theory is simple: it just wasn’t very good.

The Power Rangers franchise may be about to see some big changes. Ever since 2015 Judd "Chip" Lynn has been executive producer on the franchise, overseeing Dino Charge, Ninja Steel, and Beast Morphers. While he wasn’t the only executive producer on those season he was the one who had a large portion of control over the show, working with the cast and crew on nearly every level of production. Now it’s being reported that Lynn won’t be the only executive producer working on the series in New Zealand.
Thanks to The Power Scoop via No Pink Spandex, we’ve learned that Simon Bennett (director of various Ninja Steel and Beast Morphers episodes) has, as his IMDb profile states, ”taken over the reins as Ep of Hasbro's famed Power Rangers TV series.
