Note: The following story contains spoilers from “What We Do in the Shadows” Season 6, Episode 9.
From its first season, “What We Do in the Shadows” has been a show unafraid to cheekily drop big names, especially if the actors in question have a vampire on their IMDb page. And in its final season, the FX comedy embraced its chaotic, star-studded side once more.
“Come Out and Play” once again finds the Staten Island crew among the many, many, many throngs of vampires that inhabit New York, from the Meatpacking hotties to the aspiring artist vampires who have to hold down day jobs as baristas. But there’s one especially tall, pale and questioning vamp that may have caught viewers’ eyes. Here’s your guide to the “True Blood” star who’s casually in this latest season.

In the world of television, the best shows don’t just entertain — they spark conversations and push boundaries. It’s not a new thing.
Classics like All in the Family, Maude, and The Mary Tyler Moore Show paved the way by daring to address social issues head-on, tackling topics like sexism, race, and class with unflinching honesty.
Long before today’s open discussions on race, mental health, and LGBTQ+ issues, these series, and others that followed, quietly laid the groundwork for progressive storytelling.
(CBS/Screenshot)
Shows like these shattered stereotypes, broke taboos, and brought real-world issues into America’s living rooms, igniting conversations that continue to shape TV today.
Here’s a look at the trailblazing shows that, in their own way, were ahead of their time.
These shows tackled themes and topics that mainstream TV had long avoided, proving that television could be both thought-provoking and entertaining.

The remake of a classic '80s legal show that managed to earn a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score is now a streaming hit, seemingly earning its spot via Prime Video. Over the last few years, there have been a handful of remakes of classic TV shows reimagined for a more modern audience. This includes NBC's now-cancelled Quantum Leap, a remake of the 1989 series, and a trilogy of shows made by Peter M. Lenkov, those being remakes of Hawaii Five-0, MacGyver, and Magnum P.I. These remakes have managed to find varying levels of success as they've been released.
The level of success these shows have found also depends on where they're being watched. Many of these remakes are on network TV channels, meaning they stream the following day on services like Paramount+ or Peacock. Because of the ease of access streaming allows, it offers a new metric of success for these shows.

S.W.A.T. fans have been through the wringer during the show’s eight seasons. Is it canceled? Or is it renewed? Do we know? Does CBS?
S.W.A.T is back for now, but some things are different. The new 20-Squad isn’t your grandparents’ version of S.W.A.T. How do viewers like the new look and the younger squad?
It works, but is it as good as it once was?
(Bill Inoshita/CBS)
I promise this isn’t a Toby Keith song. It’s a breakdown of how the S.W.A.T Season 8 is stacking up on what we’re certain (almost) will be the show’s last run.
Classic television shows like S.W.A.T., Hawai’i Five-o, Magnum, P.I., and Quantum Leap intrigue viewers across generational gaps.
The idea of a tough, highly-tuned police division keeping order in one of the country’s toughest cities has appealed to audiences for decades, starting in 1975. However, the...

Warning! This post contains spoilers for Woman of the Hour.
After watching Woman of the Hour and its retelling of the Dating Game episode that featured Rodney Alcala, it is hard not to be curious about what happened to the two contestants who competed with Rodney Alcala on the show. Based on Rodney Alcala's true criminal history, Anna Kendrick's Woman of the Hour unfolds many different chapters from the serial killer's life. While primarily focusing on his strange appearance in The Dating Game, the movie also goes back and forth in time to walk through some of his most vicious murders.
Although every chapter in the movie's narrative is equally compelling, its portrayal of The Dating Game episode is particularly unsettling. It highlights how Rodney Alcala effectively hides his true tendencies behind a charming facade, which even helps him beat his two competitors on the show. His competitors are...

CBS' unorthodox reboot of Matlock has charmed in its first season thus far, and the Kathy Bates-led legal procedural has earned a season 2 renewal. Based on the 1980s series of the same name, the modern reboot follows a septuagenarian lawyer named Matty Matlock (Bates) who returns to the world of law and uses her unassuming status to get to the bottom of her cases. Though the series features the same procedural structure as its predecessor, it has the added wrinkle of exploring Matty's mysterious backstory that involves a case from her past.
Though reboots of classic shows are nothing new the new Matlock is a truly original take because it adds an unprecedented wrinkle. In the Kathy Bates version, Andy Griffith's '80s Matlock exists in-universe as a TV show, and it's only a coincidence that the lead characters share a name. This frees the reboot from the original's canon,...

It's not easy being an actor. With the constant auditions, the judgy casting directors, and the constant spotlight; it can be downright awful. Yet, when you find a gig that hits and makes you into a star, it can certainly be nice. Still, in order to get to that level you have to land the leading role on a major franchise.
Or several, in the case of Scott Bakula. Bakula was the main man behind Quantum Leap, before eventually landing another leading role on Star Trek: Enterprise. During his run on the show, he would have to deal with a series of issues that other shows didn't.
Constant low promotion from the network, franchise fatigue, a lack of merchandise, and of course fans who didn't like that this new Star Trek show was somewhat different from what they were getting before. In fact, it was the last part that seemed...

Shailene Woodley is set to star in a biopic of Janis Joplin, which will receive $2.5 million in funding from the California Film Commission.
Numerous attempts have been made over the years to capture the rock star’s life on film, but none have come to fruition. Woodley is acting and producing the film, which will shoot over 30 days and spend about $10 million in “qualified expenditures.”
“California meant so much to Janis Joplin — from the stoops of San Francisco to the wooden walls of Sunset Sound, the state became the stage upon which she explored not just the world of music, but the world of her vibrant humanity,” Woodley said in a release on Tuesday.
The commission also announced that it has awarded $12 million to get “Suits L.A.” to film in L.A. NBC’s “Suits” spinoff series shot its pilot in Vancouver, home of one of the world’s most generous film tax incentives.

Leonard Nimoy wrote his first autobiography in 1975, titling it "I Am Not Spock." It wasn't born out of hatred for his beloved "Star Trek" role, it was simply inspired by people conflating him with his character. Notably, Nimoy wrote a follow-up titled "I Am Spock" 20 years later.
Spock was Nimoy's breakout part and his most remembered role, but lest we forget that aforementioned memoir, he'd been acting for more than a decade before "Star Trek" came along. One of his more minor parts was in an episode of "The Twilight Zone" season 3 — "A Quality of Mercy." The episode is set in the Philippines on August 6, 1945 (the day the U.S. bombed Hiroshima). Nimoy plays Hansen, one of the American G.I.'s fighting the last days of an already-won war.
The idea of the episode came from writer Sam Rolfe, but the actual teleplay was written by "Twilight Zone" creator/narrator Rod Serling.

Neal McDonough's movies and TV shows prove that he is an actor who has a wide range when it comes to playing his roles, although he seems to fit in well as a villain most of the time. McDonough got his start in acting after giving up a baseball career to study theater at Syracuse. He began his career with small roles in some very popular properties, including the movies Darkman, Angels in the Outfield, and Star Trek: First Contact, and TV shows like Quantum Leap and Jag.
However, McDonough got his true breakout when Steven Spielberg cast him in the HBO miniseries Band of Brothers. Since that time, McDonough has enjoyed a consistent career in both movies and TV shows. He returned to work with Spielberg again for Minority Report and even Clint Eastwood. However, he really made his name on television, where he has starred in several...

Each season premiere is typically where Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short), and Mabel (Selena Gomez) begin investigating a new murder after the shocking discovery of a body. But as has become customary for the show, the previous season's finale is where the victim is revealed.
In the case of season 4, "Only Murders" followed that formula, with the victim revealed at the end of season 3 as Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch), the longtime stunt double and friend of Charles Haden-Savage, ended up shot while heading into Charles' apartment to retrieve some celebratory champagne. But when the time came to...

Star Trek's untitled prequel movie should include Scott Bakula as Jonathan Archer to honor the series' history and fans. Bakula's return would add legitimacy to the prequel movie and connect it to the established Star Trek canon. Jonathan Archer's importance as the father of the Federation makes him a crucial character to include in the film.
Star Trek's untitled prequel movie needs Scott Bakula from Star Trek: Enterprise. Director Toby Haynes is mounting an Untitled Star Trek Origin movie for Paramount Pictures. Written by Seth Grahame-Smith, Haynes' Star Trek prequel is reportedly set "decades before" J.J. Abrams' Star Trek movies, which would place it in Star Trek's Prime Timeline before the creation of Abrams' alternate Kelvin timeline. Star Trek's prequel movie is also said to be set mostly on Earth, with humanity dealing with aliens and the founding of the United Federation of Planets.

Image Source Amazon You can add A Different World to the list of old shows that are getting a new generational reboot. Just as Frasier, The Conners (formerly Roseanne), Will & Grace, and Quantum Leap all returned more than a decade after their original finales, there are reports that Netflix is working on a new version of A Different World, focusing on the child of two original characters — Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne — as she spends her college years at her parents’ alma mater, Hillman College. Though it hasn’t been determined whether Jasmine Guy (who played Whitley) will be part of the new show, it wouldn’t surprise us to see her join the cast. We’ve spoken to her many times over the years about the show, and she’s always expressed a great deal of pride about her time on A Different World and what the show meant to so many people.

The 1980s are often viewed as a pop cultural wasteland: a post-disco, style-over-substance hellscape where music videos turned vacuous bands and singers into chart-topping titans, blockbuster-chasing executives drained films of personality and artistic merit, and television pandered to a benumbed viewership with hacky sitcoms, formula dramas, and risible nighttime soaps. This was only half-true.
There was a good bit of dreck polluting the multiplexes and the airwaves throughout the eight-year Reagan era (and the Bush I hangover), but you'd have to be a killjoy to have lived through that time and turned up your nose at the bevy of brilliant artists who were working at their absolute peak. Prince, Spielberg, Streep, Selleck ... yes, Selleck. Tom Selleck.

Fans of 1980s and 90s sci-fi are in for a treat, as the Terminator franchise time travels to unexpected inspiration. Writer Declan Shalvey revealed to Dynamite Entertainment his upcoming comic series draws from the beloved TV show Quantum Leap.
Shalvey’s love of Quantum Leap is no secret – the writer envisioned pitching the property before this opportunity arose. “It’s Quantum Leap from hell,” he muses, blending the premise of involuntarily body-hopping through time with Terminator’s dystopian future war storyline.
Both franchises made meaningful marks exploring temporal mechanics. Quantum Leap saw protagonist Sam Beckett leaping into uncertain situations each week, striving to “put right what once went wrong.” Meanwhile, the Terminator films established a dynamic loop of fate and resistance across multiple timelines.

SkyNet isn't done yet. The monstrous AI will terrorize the time stream again in a new Terminator comic. This time around, the genocidal robots have a surprising inspiration. During an interview with Dynamite Entertainment, writer Declan Shalvey spoke about his inspiration for his new comic, The Terminator. Set across space and time, the story features a desperate SkyNet sending various Terminators to kill the ancestors of the resistance. In that vein, Shalvey compared the tale to Quantum Leap, the '90s series starring Scott Bakula:
Once I was asked if there was a license I'd like to do, what would it be? And my answer was Quantum Leap, because I love that show. And I realized the other day that actually I'm kind of doing that with Terminator, except it's Quantum Leap from hell. And that's just interesting, the one thing I'd like to do I've kind of made it into something else.

In October, an ambitious new Terminator series from Dynamite Entertainment will unleash Skynet's most ambitious plan yet. Image Source: Paramount+ If you look back at the various versions of Star Trek through the years, even going back to the original series in the 1960s, a key component to the stories that were being told was that they usually carried a strong social conscience with them. Even as the world has changed dramatically over the ensuing decades, every iteration of Star Trek has attempted to bring relevant issues to the forefront of their storylines and episodes. As the star of Star Trek: Enterprise, Scott Bakula was well aware of the show’s mission. After all, on Quantum Leap, he’d been on a show that was constantly trying to re-examine social issues through a new lens. When Bakula spoke at the Star Trek: First Contact panel a few years ago, he said he was proud of the way Enterprise dealt with current events, even though the show...

NCIS started as a spinoff through a backdoor pilot in Jag, which led to its massive success for over 46 seasons. Original NCIS pilot episodes featured main cast members, setting the foundation for the long-running series' popularity. NCIS surpassed Jag's success by blending crime-solving with humor, character-driven storytelling, and versatile storytelling.
NCIS has become a powerhouse franchise for CBS, but its original pilot was actually part of another show that wasn't able to maintain the same long-lasting success. The NCIS franchise has now spawned five spinoffs, taking the team of naval investigators to different cities and countries. In total, CBS's franchise has netted more than 1000 episodes across 46 seasons to date, and there's no sign of NCIS slowing down.
Yet NCIS found its start through a backdoor pilot in Jag, another legal action drama series that initially aired on NBC but was dropped after one season and picked up by CBS.

Queer film fans in Los Angeles are feeling the summer void left by the beloved Outfest, which paused its programming last year amid financial issues and staff layoffs and has yet to resume. But a new film series, called Queer Rhapsody, looks to fill that crater across five venues July 19-28 — and with curation from the UCLA Film and Television Archive and one of Outfest’s former own. Even if they aren’t looking just to replace the 40-year-long legacy of L.A.’s oldest film festival. Plus, Queer Rhapsody is decidedly a series, not a festival.

Exclusive: God Friended Me creators Steven Lilien and Bryan Wynbrandt are returning to CBS, teaming with the former The Neighborhood writer-producer Laura Moran, James Wan’s Atomic Monster and CBS Studios for Area 51.
The half-hour workplace comedy, now in development, is single-camera, indicating that CBS continues to opportunistically take shorts in the single-camera comedy space where it has had a lot of success with the recently departed juggernaut Young Sheldon and ongoing hit Ghosts.
Last year, CBS ordered only multi-camera comedy pilots, and its two new comedy series for next season are both multi-cam, Poppa’s House and the Young Sheldon spinoff Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage.
Multi-camera comedies are cheaper to produce, making them attractive for broadcast networks as budgets get squeezed amid declining linear ratings. For studios, broadcast single-camera comedies are hard to justify financially because of their higher cost and depressed network license fees.

Ruth Westheimer, who brought frank talk about sex into America’s living rooms for the first time as radio and television talk show host Dr. Ruth, has died. She was 96.
Westheimer died on Friday at her home in New York City, a spokesperson told the New York Times.
The diminutive educator with a thick German accent was known for dispensing explicit, down-to-earth advice on matters that weren’t previously discussed on-air.
Westheimer hosted at least five shows on Lifetime and other cable stations from 1984 to 1993, and wrote dozens of books on sex.
The college professor was already in her 50s when she started her radio show on New York radio station Wyny in 1980. She later said that being middle-aged probably helped her be accepted as an expert rather than a sex object, as discussing erotic pleasure was largely taboo on radio and television before her show.

“Day one season two,” wrote Johnson on his Instagram Story.
Inspired by the inverted detective format of Columbo and similarly described by Johnson as a “howcatchem” (as opposed to the “whodunit” structure of Knives Out and Glass Onion), Poker Face follows Vegas casino worker and human bullshit detector Charlie Cale (Lyonne) as she runs from the mob while solving a string of murders along the way.

Rian Johnson's hit series Poker Face was met with great acclaim upon its debut on Peacock in early 2023. The show was renewed for a second season soon after, but its production has since been on the shelf.
That changed on July 1, as revealed by Tony Tost, a writer and director working on the series. Tost took to social media to share an image of the clapperboard from the set, announcing that Season 2 of Poker Face has officially started filming. The clapperboard shows that the cast and crew have been filming the second episode of the season, also revealing that series star Natasha Lyonne will be directing. It might have taken about a year and a half, but new episodes have finally started production.

Jag, a classic military legal drama, is set to stream in its entirety on Prime Video starting July 1, 2024. Created by Donald P. Bellisario, Jag was a precursor to NCIS, which has since become the most-watched scripted show on network television. Jag's success paved the way for the NCIS franchise, which has spawned multiple spin-offs and remains popular to this day.
While NCIS has become a popular television franchise all on its own, the series wouldnt exist today without Jag, the classic military legal drama that began in 1995, and spawned NCIS following its eighth season in 2002. While Paramount+ has housed a handful of episodes of Jag for a while now, the series has never been able to stream in its entirety, but that is about to change very soon, as all 10 seasons of Jag are making their way to Prime Video.
As per TV Line, the 227 episodes that comprise JAGs...
