Rob Friedman’s Ascendant Entertainment is developing a drama series about female high school basketball with former player Melanie Page and Kellie R. Griffin, Variety has earned exclusively.
The series is titled “On the Line.” The official description states it will follow “the on- and off-court stories of female high school basketball players.” Page is developing the series with Griffin, who will serve as showrunner. Alison Lani Genest, Ascendant’s vice president of development, is overseeing on behalf of the company. News of the series comes as women’s basketball has seen a rapid rise in popularity of late.
“As the proud father of four young women and a basketball dad myself, I know this is an arena full of captivating stories and co-viewing opportunities,” Friedman said. “Our focus is not on the coaches, but on the players — the young women and all the pressure and drama they face in their day-to-day lives,...

Malcolm-Jamal Warner has joined the cast of the hit ABC procedural series 9-1-1. The popular television star will play a nurse named Amir in the series, and the synopsis says he has a “complicated past.” The network has released a first-look sneak peek at his role on the show and what fans can expect.
Here is a look at the first look at Malcolm-Jamal Warner on 9-1-1.

Hey, Big Brother Fans. First, we just want to apologize. We previously ran a supposed leak list of 6 houseguests from a source on Twitter, and it turns out that none of those houseguests are actually any of the people that will be participating in the upcoming Celebrity Big Brother edition. It was a shock to us. The good news is the real cast actually looks a whole lot better than any of these fake leaked houseguests. As promised, CBS and the Big Brother producers finally revealed who will officially be participating on the first ever Celebrity Big Brother edition when it finally debuts on Wednesday night, February 7, 2018 at approximately 7 pm central standard time. They revealed it during the huge 2018 Grammy Awards tonight. There's a total of 11 houseguests to go over here. So, get comfortable. With no further ado, let's get right into this pretty ok sounding houseguest list. The first...

I've been waiting and debating for oh-so-long for a comedy show that is actually funny; and when I say funny I mean leg-slapping, foot-stomping, my-head-is-hurting funny! Well, to my surprise, ABC has delivered a new side-splitting comedy called "Black-ish," about a successful, black family man who struggles to find some cultural identity while raising his family in a predominately white, upper-middle class neighborhood. It stars Anthony Anderson, Tracee Ellis Ross, and newcomers Yara Shahidi, Marcus Scribner, and others. Here are six reasons why you should watch:
1. Anthony Anderson Is Executive Producer
Anthony Anderson was born in Compton and is the current host of Food Network's "Eating America," and formerly a member of NBC's Emmy Award-winning drama "Law & Order." Anderson played Detective Kevin Bernard opposite Jeremy Sisto's Detective Cyrus Lupo. He's also appeared in more than 20 films, including the comedy blockbuster "Barbershop." Now, he's starring in and executive producing "Black-ish,...

How do you have a meaningful conversation about race and culture in a network television comedy? Calling your show "Black-ish" is one way to start. The ABC comedy starring Anthony Anderson, Tracee Ellis Ross and Laurence Fishburne follows "Modern Family" this fall and provides a rare (for network TV) look at an affluent black family -- complete with four kids and a live-in grandpa played by Fishburne. And while race is right there in the title, both creator Kenya Barris ("The Game") and executive producer Larry Wilmore ("The Bernie Mac Show," "The Daily Show") promise the "family" element is even more important, as they explained during the show's presentation at the 2014 TCA summer press tour. "I know race is a big part of it and we're not running from it, but this is a show about culture," Barris said. "It's a show about what it's like to raise a family during a different time.

According to Deadline, Bet has quietly cancelled Reed Between the Lines after two seasons, one of which has yet to air.
The sitcom revolves around Doctor Carla Reed (Tracee Ellis Ross), a psychologist, wife and mother who tries to find the secret of balancing her professional and personal responsibilities. The sitcom also stars Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Melissa De Sousa, Nadji A. Jeter, Zoe Soul, Zoé Hendrix, and Anna Maria Horsford.
Reed Between the Lines debuted in October 2011. The show did well enough in its first season to score a second season renewal in April 2012. Maybe it shouldn't be a huge surprise, after a star of and key player in the series, Tracee Ellis Ross, suddenly exited from Bet's Reed Between The Lines, over a year ago. Bet‘s drama Being Mary Jane is not slated to debut as a regular series until early next year but I hear the network has already quietly ordered a second season, following the 90-minute pilot’s big premiere in July when it drew 4 million viewers and a 2.0 adults 18-49 rating. Being Mary Jane, starring Gabrielle Union as a successful TV news anchor, hails from Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil, the duo behind Bet’s flagship comedy The Game, which is in production on Season 7. Meanwhile, I hear Bet has pulled the plug on comedy Reed Between The Lines. The show, got off to a solid start with Tracee Ellis Ross starring as Dr. Carla Reed, a successful psychologist trying to balance her family and career, and Malcolm-Jamal Warner as her husbad. It was renewed for a second season in April 2012 but underwent a revamp later that year when Ross departed.

I've ragged a lot on the Jacque Edmonds Cofer (Living Single, Reed Between The Lines) executive produced Let's Stay Together in the past year plus of this column, about how the acting is often stiff, the situations flat-out silly and the comedy inconsistent and non-existent. Geoff Pierson (Boardwalk Empire) is set to co-star opposite Josh Cooke and Jay Mohr in TV Land’s multi-camera comedy pilot Brothers-In-Law. Written and executive produced by Bill Martin and Mike Schiff, Brothers-In-Law revolves around the family dynamic between a husband (Cooke) and the eccentric new boyfriend (Mohr) of his wife’s fraternal twin sister (Ellen Woglom), who have nothing in common but the sisters constantly force them to bond. Pierson, repped by the Stone Manners Salners Agency and attorney Tom Hoberman, will play Tom, sisters Cheska and Maddie’s (Woglom) father. He’s overtly antagonistic towards Cheska’s husband Neil (Cooke) but instantly hits it off with Maddie’s new boyfriend Van (Mohr) and thinks he is twice the man Neil is. Charlie Robinson (Night Court) booked a new series regular role on the next season of Bet comedy series Reed Between The Lines, playing star Malcolm Jamal Warner’s father,...

"New Girl," the buzziest debut show of the 2011-2012 television season, may also have been the whitest. Starring Zooey Deschanel, in bangs and big glasses and being "adorkable," the sitcom could be an avatar for the still-preponderantly white casts of major network shows. Less blogged and written about were two new series on Bet, "Let's Stay Together" and "Reed Between the Lines," both featuring mostly African-American casts. During Bet's April 19 upfront presentation, executives announced that both shows, as well as flagship series "The Game," had been renewed, while "House Husbands" and "Second Generation Wayans" were given the green light.Robi Reed, Bet's vice president of talent and casting for original programming, sees the network's reaffirmed dedication to scripted programming as an important contribution to television. "At Bet, there are roles now where they don't exist in mainstream TV, where African-American actors get to play leads," Reed said. "We've been waiting.

Bet has renewed The Game for a sixth season. The formerly cancelled TV series has been extremely successful for the cable channel since they resurrected it in 2011. It's currently averaging a 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 2.77 million viewers.
In addition to announcing new shows like Don't Sleep, House Husbands, The Mathis Project and Second Generation Wayans, Bet has renewed Let's Stay Together and Reed Between the Lines for third seasons. The latter's second season is expected later this year. Let's Stay Together and The Game are expected to wrap their respective seasons on June 5th.
The gospel competition series, Sunday Best, has been renewed for season five.

Exclusive: I hear that Bet has quietly renewed its flagship comedy series The Game for a sixth season (third on the cable network), and the Queen Latifah-produced sophomore Let’s Stay Together for a third. The pickups, which I hear are for 22 episodes, are not official yet and are expected to be announced at Bet’s upfront presentation on Thursday. Additionally, I hear that Bet is mulling a renewal of freshman comedy Reed Between The Lines. Bet, whose current foray into scripted comedy series started an year and a half ago with the pickup of The Game after it had been canceled by the CW, is quickly expanding its portfolio. In addition to the three existing original series, the network is in pre-production on hourlong pilot Being Mary Jane starring Gabrielle Union and sitcom Young Man On Campus starring Jacob Latimore, which originated as an episode of Reed this past season.

Shave your Twitter beards and get ready to go back to school because "Community" is finally returning this week (Thurs., Mar. 15, 8 p.m. Et on NBC)!
I was on set while they shot this week's big, romantic episode, "Urban Matrimony and the Sandwich Arts," which features a Boyz II Men-soundtracked proposal, a possible wedding, a potential new business partnership and the return of Malcolm-Jamal Warner, a.k.a. Shirley's (Yvette Nicole Brown) baby daddy and former ex Andre.
Brown, Warner, Joel McHale, Alison Brie, Danny Pudi, Donald Glover and Gillian Jacobs teased drunken breakdowns, wedding planning, surprising new sides of certain characters and what Troy and Abed's idea of "normal" actually looks like.
So Andre proposes again? We haven't seen him in quite a while.
Yvette Nicole Brown: "Mmhmmm. Yeah, it's been a while -- Shirley's referenced baby Ben a few times, and life is going on, but...

Now that "Community" is finally back on NBC's schedule (Thurs., Mar. 15, 8 p.m. Est on NBC), it's time for Malcolm-Jamal Warner's triumphant return to the show as Shirley's (Yvette Nicole Brown) baby daddy, Andre.
I caught up with Warner on the "Community" set while shooting "Urban Matrimony and the Sandwich Arts" -- the episode finds Andre proposing that he and Shirley get remarried, and we'll have more scoop on that next week from all the cast. But I couldn't hang out with my first TV crush ever -- who now stars on Bet's "Reed Between the Lines" -- and not talk about "The Cosby Show." (Yes, I told him he was my first crush; yes, I'm a dork; and yes, he noted that I'm about the same age as Keshia Knight Pulliam, who played Rudy, and that it's weird that I crushed on him when I was that young.

The mood was a somber one at the 43rd Annual NAACP Image Awards in Los Angeles last night. Much of the ceremony was colored by Whitney Houston’s memory, which was honored in the form of numerous tributes.
Yolanda Adams delivered a stirring rendition of “I Love the Lord, He Made Me Cry,” which she ended with “We love you, Nip.” (“Nip” is Houston’s nickname.)
Also highlighted during the evening was footage from the 1994 Image Awards, which depicted the late singer accepting an Image Award for outstanding female artist. In the clip, Denzel Washington is tasked with presenting the prize,...

The Fall TV season is right around the corner folks, so some tough viewing choices are coming. Let’s get thinking about them, shall we?
Each day this week — during “the calm before the storm” — we’re showing you the grid for that night’s fall line-up, including the broadcast nets’ wares and select cable listings. You then vote for what you plan to watch Live during each time slot (since live/live-ish viewership is still the creme de la creme when it comes to ratings, whether we like it or not).
