Such a fun and charming show.

I see a lot of mediocre reviews for this show because it is not what was implied it would be in the promotion. A straight honest adaptation of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. I can understand the disappointment, but are you rating the show or the advertising campaign?

However it's quite apparent that they intended to subvert expectations, even with starting out the first episode or two exactly how you would expect a direct adapation to be. It makes sense to me that they wanted the audience to go in expecting a one to one adaption, to purposefully lead you on a chaotic path.

To say this is not for fans is a misunderstanding of the goal of this show. It nods its head to the story that came before, but gives space and a situation for supporting characters whom I had always found interesting and fun to elaborate on their role in the original story, as well as grow as characters themselves.

All the while staying true to the fun, rock and roll, nerdy video game, cartoonish off beat humor that made the original characters and overall work so charming.

This isn't Scott Pilgrim vs. The World **again**. This is **new Scott Pilgrim content.**, and to have that while staying true to the heart of the source material? How is that not for fans?

Feels too good to be true

I was super excited for this show. Not only was a competent animation studio adapting one of my favorite comics and one of my favorite movies, but the cast of the movie was coming back to voice. I went in expecting an adaptation of the same story as the movie and the comic series, likely following closer to the comic than the movie did, but this show is something completely different and I loved it. I see other reviews on here that mostly criticize the fact that this isn't just the same story with a new paint job, and I think that's pretty stupid. Not only did Edgar Wright himself and other members of the crew say that this was something new in interviews, but this is really good. I think the only reason these people are mad is because they had a specific expectation and that expectation was not met. Anyway, the show is great. I'll avoid spoiling too much, but it's kind of like Final Fantasy 7 Remake, where it follows the original story to a certain point and then starts to do its own thing. The animation is great, the action scenes are cool, the voice acting is great, and an iconic duo from another Edgar Wright film have a few cameos. It's clear the amount of love and attention went in to this product. I highly recommend it if you're a fan of the series, and I would recommend that newcomers watch the live action movie and read the comic series before checking this out.

As a non fan I was pleasantly surprised

I really enjoyed it as I went going in not expecting much, loved the sketchy pencil animation and art style, the fights were very creative and fun. I feel the only let down for me was that it wasnt really my thing, and that's a me thing, and it suffered from the same things some of the move did as well as things I never really gelled with in the source material, because I will admit I never really liked Scott Pilgrim franchise, but this is the best I got out of it and that's maybe due to how awesome the animation and songs and just the overall aesthetic was.

It was a well crafted show all round, great acting from a returning cast and it made me smile in places. I only watched it out of curiosity and while I wasnt fully entertained I am glad I did watch it. If you are a fan and want to see a new perspective you could do far worse, I say check it out.

I Want More!

A great spin-off of a beloved franchise. Takes Off brings something new to the series by switching the narrative to Ramona's point of view. The animation is like reading the comics with hand-drawn effect, colorful scenery and effects. It has everything that people loved from the franchise with a lot of retro-gaming Easter eggs, absurd humor, hilarious characters, good pop-rock songs, and even the cast of the movie reprises their role as voice actor. I really like to give Ramona Flowers the first role, as not only she's fun to follow but also because it gives her a more to show than "this perfect alternative girl that makes people turns madly in love with", presenting her flaws even helps to give some humanity to her evil exes. Because of the absurd humor, there is a lot of "this happens, don't ask questions", people looking for a minimum of logic would see plot holes everywhere but if you are just there for the ride, it's a wild one.

A very pleasing surprise a decade later

I remember when I was a teenager, I watched this movie and was blown away by great margins. Some could even say Scott Pilgrim was ahead of its time. The series takes the radically awesome story a step further and explores new aspects.

I must admit it is damn straight impressive they got the original cast back even after all of these years. That fact alone is enough to earn my respect towards the Scott Pilgrim franchise and its creators.

The animation is vastly different from anything I have ever seen. It's tricky to describe it, but its a bizarrely epic style with brightness and motions like none other.

The story is unique from all expectations, but was explained properly in the Scott Pilgrim way. Like most people, we only have memory of the legendary movie, so this series takes it a step further.

Exploring sides of characters we have never seen before, and even for people like me who did not read the books. I didn't feel left out for a single moment throughout all of the episodes.

I have verified the story of this series is a spinoff compared to the source material. While this series is a great attempt, I do respect the fact this show was meant more to be a one time thing. As getting the original actors to come back to the series continously wasn't part of the agreement.

If this is the last of Scott Pilgrim we will see, I respect it. The series surpassed all expectations even if it was radically different. There was great potential to make this a continous series, and I guess that wasn't in the vision of the creators.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Another Approach

WOW, just WOW. I had high expectations for this adaptation and every one of them were exceeded.

A note: this is not a straight adaptation. It is a new story, that explores the characters of this universe in new and unexpected ways, focusing on those who got the least development in the comics and film.

The animation is amazing, it reminds me of Mob Psycho 100 in the best possible ways.

The only small negative is the cast. While it is amazing they got the original actors back, it is obvious some of them are not voice actors. Most of them do a great job, but some of them are just OK. (It is not bad enough to take off a whole point though, as most of the main characters do a great job.)

As a fan of both the comics and the film, this is an amazing addition to the universe. However, those expecting a one-to-one adaptation might be disappointed. That is what I expected as well, but was very pleasantly surprised by getting an expansion of the universe instead.

Kind of like "Masters of the Universe" but a bit better

While I am happy that instead of just telling the same Scott Pilgrim story a third time in a new media form, I do have to say that like in Masters of the Universe where He-man was heavily featured in the promos but is missing for 80% of the actual show, this show does the same with Scott Pilgrim.

Despite being the titular character, Scott Pilgrim is gone for the majority of the episodes as the series instead focuses on Ramona Flowers and several secondary characters of the series. While this was not a terrible decision, it was more than a bit misleading.

Other than that, the series has all of the zany weirdness common in Scott Pilgrim media. While the jokes and situations aren't as good as the comic or the movie, I am definitely awaiting a second season, hopefully with more actual Scott Pilgrim this time.

Also, props on pretty much all of the film's actor's reprising their roles for the animated series.

THE ARTSTYLE THE CHARACTERS

I LOVED THIS SERIE SINCE FOREVER and to see it finally get animated brings joy to my heart.

The art style is amazing, and the studio bringing the old movie cast back was such a small yet amazing idea, the colors are amazing, and the animation is fun for the eyes.

It's not completely flawless tho, So many scenes are missing and the slice-of-life moments older fans loved and enjoyed aren't really there which is not going to ruin the show for you unless you read the comics Other than that the series is going to be something fun and new and I really recommend watching it and investing some time in the franchise.

It was alright

This is my introduction to the franchise, I've heard about both the movie and the comics being really good so I gave this a chance.

It was...alright? Only 8 episodes, it doesn't really drag for long but it wasn't anything special; the animation was great but the story was pretty meh, I really liked the first and last 2 episodes, which means that pretty much everything that had Ramona as the protagonist was average at best. I liked cool, non-stereotypical female characters and Ramona is that but she's just not that interesting as an MC. Finding out that this isn't a direct adaptation makes everything make sense, this was definitely something that was created for the old fans. She has a past, a IDGAF attitude and a cool design which on paper sounds good but just isn't as entertaining as Scott which is your average lovable idiot and watching him try his best is what makes the show shine.

I can now see why fans would be upset at the misguided promotion that led them to believe the show would be an adaptation of the original. Although I'm not so sure I'd enjoy it more if they had adapted the original story, the evil exes were just not entertaining to watch either, most of them were kind of cringe, and not fun cringe, just sad corny cringe. I think it'd been better if it had been Ramona who had disappeared or something, I don't know, I wasn't expecting anything and was sure not amazed.

Different, amazing, and stunning

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is uniquely in the sense of everything. Watching the movie and then coming to this you may think some parts are being rush or wrong, but SPTO retells the story in a new and original way taht is just perfect. This show adds lots of new and original content with the same old humor we love. The art style is perfect for Scott's story and does justice to all the iconic moments we know and love from the original movie and then some. SPTO cast and crew truly love this series and it shows from it humor, animation, acting and peak story. This is everything and more than what the fans expect. Netflix thanks you.

Perfect just like the Movie

The show was quirky, fast an so Spontaneous just like the Comics, Cera Winstead an Evans were the Highlights even Showing off Bhabha's Patel as more then the first Ex an leading man Material. The rest of the cast were great an bringing back the voices from the movie was Perfect. Larson and Culkins characters still iconic an Knives is still innocent as ever an you can't stop the language that Plazas character brings to the table. The animation was very defying an fit the vibe in every episode from the Ex's behind the scenes stories that we never knew we needed. Hopefully this show lasts a few more seasons because we need this. 10/10.

An interesting adaptation

Scott Pilgrim takes off has been heavily prommoted as an adaptation of the comics, down to the casting of most of the film's actors. And indeed, the first episode does more or less follow the events of the first issue.

Then it takes a radical swerve, and the events from then on make this it's own unique work.

This isn't a bad thing, as it acts as a sort of alternate timeline to the events of the comic, and allows a deeper exploration of Ramona Flowers, which has been criticised as a bit shallow. Here, she gets quite an interesting character development in dealing with her mistakes

The animation is artistically close to the comics, which is a mixture of western and anime styles. Its purposely janky at times, but capable of remarkable fluidity.

Overall, an interesting experience, so long as you're open to a "what if" scenario.

Scottpocalypse Now: Redux

I read the comics before the film came out and even played the game making me the bullseye for the target demographic. The audiovisual aspects are top notch so let´s just move on. Would I have liked a more direct adaptation? I prefer the comic, so maybe, but actually not. The score would have remained the same and the anime would have also left my memory for the same reason most 1-to-1 anime adaptations do. I can´t stop thinking about this adaptation on the other hand and not only due to its "canonical" implications. Treating comics as raw storyboards is the easy path. Well, easier. Making a 00s nerd culture show would have dated the anime before it even aired and made it a side product to the movie, especially due to the returning cast. A deconstruction of that generation of entertainment and adaptations is hard to forget on the other hand. A few characters, Knives most of all, end up underserved (but not Scott) and I wouldn´t have minded a present-day, well 00s, version of Nega Scott either. Ramona develops less than one would think as the audience's viewpoint now switches to her for about 4 eps but this isn´t really "her" show either. The exes take the stage and boy howdy do they. Gideon being able to carry his own plots divorced from what came before isn´t surprising but Lucas and Matthew of all people really surprised me. Newcomers need to have experienced at least one older version of the tale to "get" what is happening here and why as this is sometimes a prequel and later even a sequel to the comic. That is the real "issue" with the show but I would argue that the anime is strong enough to get you interested in the rest of the story. Even the film version becomes a plot point and I liked those 2 eps the most. I wonder if Bryan Lee O'Malley will call it quits here. I don´t think so but a second season or a page-by-page adaptation makes little sense after unleashing this labyrinth of deconstruction.

Scott is still the protagonist. He still drives the plot even after he "Takes Off" and not Ramona but the people complaining clearly don´t know what defines a protagonist. Or that fans would be the first to want to read a comic about her and her social circle. Her new plot doesn´t even lead anywhere but how could it? The story is many things but it´s mostly a slice of life and no one is the protagonist of that. No real villains either. Putting "the plot" on pause for 5 eps was a ballsy decision and I wish that more people had the balls to lie about what their latest IP entry is about. Druckmann, Kojima and O'Malley certainly know how to keep an IP fresh. When the sun comes up, I'm down!

PS: The author divorced 4 years after the comic concluded after 14 years of marriage.

Not what you'd expect, but good once you accept that

Rather than being simply a direct animated adaptation of the comic book like what we were all hoping to see, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is... well, telling you what it is would spoil it. So let's just say, it takes some interesting liberties with the plot.

And yeah, my first reaction was pretty negative, like a lot of reviewers here. This was not what I was hoping to see, and I swear I only stuck with it out of the slim hope the show will backpedal and get back on track at some point.

But the show did win me over in the end. I still wish it was just a faithful retelling of the story, but for what it is - it's genuinely good. The new direction complements the original, adding more depth to the characters and the world, and keeping things refreshing for long-time fans.

The one, huge downside is... this absolutely can not be your first introduction into the world of Scott Pilgrim. That'd be a terrible idea. You have to at least watch the movie first. I can't explain why without spoiling, but trust me on this.

This is a very strange choice, for such a niche franchize. Limiting your audience even further is not what you'd expect from professional filmmakers, but maybe they assumed the only people who'd want to watch this are people who love it already. I don't know. Anyway, it's pretty brave, and once you get past the surprise. It's actually really good.

I am a big fan of the books... I loved this show.

First, let's start off with the basics, way before this show was out everyone was told this was going to be a separate universe that goes a different direction and NOT a direct adaptation to the book, and is still written by Bryan Lee O'Malley (the writer of the books). And he does it near perfectly. It shows what would happen if everything went the same, except Matthew Patel beats Scott, from there it shows what everyone's life is like. Many characters who didn't get that much time in the book *ahem* like Lucas Lee *ahem* get their time in this show. It references the book constantly, but it seems quite a few people didn't notice it. It really feels like it's a sequel to the book as well as a separate story.

Let's discuss the main villain without spoilers, he was great, and you absolutely don't need to read the books to understand him, but it's much better if you do.

Scott is not in most of the show, but it really is great to see what happens if he wasn't there fighting the exes. The show isn't perfect, but as a Scott pilgrim fan this is about all I could want from this franchise. Every character (even Scott) have there time to shine.

The last thing I am going to discuss is the character development, they handled character development really well, certain characters had some really good character development that felt earned, some didn't, but most did.

If your a fan of Scott pilgrim, whether it's the books or the movie OR if you simply don't know Scott pilgrim at all...though, I would advise you to read the books first.... This is a very enjoyable series.
