Baz Ashmawy’s Darkly Comic Series ‘Faithless’ Is Picking Up The Irish Comedy Baton And Running With It
Image
Welcome to Global Breakouts, Deadline’s fortnightly strand in which we shine a spotlight on the TV shows and films killing it in their local territories. The industry is as globalized as it’s ever been, but breakout hits are appearing in pockets of the world all the time and it can be hard to keep track. So we’re going to do the hard work for you.

This week we’re heading the westernmost end of Europe to discover why Irish dramedy Faithless became a hit from a nation with a storied history of comic creations. Written by and starring Baz Ashmawy, known primarily for his TV travelogs and Sky’s 50 Ways to Kill Your Mammy, the darkly comic series charts how a widowed Irish-Egyptian father in County Wicklow attempts to raise three young girls, while exploring issues such as grief, gender roles, identity and acceptance.

Name: Faithless

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Promotes Richard Flood & Anthony Hill To Series Regulars, ‘Station 19’ Ups Stefania Spampinato
Image
ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy and spinoff Station 19 have been building an unified, seamless universe under executive producer/showrunner Krista Vernoff. Now the two Thursday dramas are making their cast promotions in unison, with one recurring player who started on the mothership series becoming a full-time cast member on the offshoot.

Richard Flood and Anthony Hill have been promoted to series regulars on Grey’s Anatomy for the medical drama’s upcoming 17th season. Meanwhile, Stefania Spampinato, who has been recurring on both Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19 having originally joined Grey’s three years ago, has become a series regular on the firefighter drama, headed into its fourth season.

“I am so excited to add Anthony Hill, Stefania Spampinato and Richard Flood to the Station 19 and Grey’s Anatomy families,” Vernoff said. “They are huge talents who made a big impact with our fans, with our casts, and with our...

‘Grey’s Anatomy’: Richard Flood Joins ABC Medical Drama As New Surgeon
Richard Flood
Exclusive: Richard Flood (Shameless) has been cast in ABC’s flagship drama series Grey’s Anatomy. As is customary for Grey’s, Flood will be introduced as a recurring later this season. He will play a key new character, Dr. Cormac Hayes, the new head of Pediatric Surgery at Grey Sloan.

Hayes will fill the position left vacant after Karev, played by original Grey’s Anatomy cast member Justin Chambers, was fired after last season’s finale and now works at Pacific Northwest General Hospital.

Irish actor Richard Flood is probably best known in the U.S. for his role of Ford opposite Emmy Rossum in the eighth and ninth seasons of Showtime’s most popular series, Shameless, in which Grey’s Anatomy Ep/showrunner Krista Vernoff served as executive producer.

Flood’s previous work also includes starring roles in the international drama Crossing Lines, which aired as a summer series on NBC,...

The New Pope First Look: Jude Law and John Malkovich Make Quite a Papal Pair
His Holiness… es?

HBO has graced us with our first look at The New Pope, a sequel series to the 2017 miniseries The Young Pope, which starred Jude Law as brash fictional pontiff Lenny, aka Pope Pius Xiii. Based on the new photo above, Law will reprise his role as Lenny in the eight-episode series, joined by new cast addition John Malkovich. HBO is mum on Malkovich’s New Pope role, but judging by his pristine vestments and skullcap — not to mention the series title — we’re betting he’s Lenny replacement in the Vatican. (The Young Pope‘s finale ended with Lenny collapsing,...

Lionsgate, Nevision Pact for Drama About Middle East Oil (Exclusive)
Lionsgate U.K. and Nevision are drilling into the simultaneously murky and glamorous world of the oil business in the Middle East in the 1970s. The British arm of the U.S. studio and the London-based indie are co-developing “Oil,” from Alan Whiting (“Kingdom”), Matthew Faulk (“Titanic: Blood and Steel”) and Mark Skeet (“Vanity Fair”).

The eight-part drama will be set in the Persian Gulf. It will blend the geopolitics of the oil business, the stories of the individuals concerned, and what happened in the compounds in which foreign executives and their families lived. Based on real historical events, the action will revolve around a British-American oil firm.

Lionsgate U.K.’s creative director, Steve November, said the setup offers the producers elements of period hit “Mad Men” and high-finance movie “The Wolf of Wall Street.” “This is the birth of the Emirates as we know it now, and at...

Horror's Final Girls: What happened to the stars of Halloween, Scream?
Kevin Bacon, Adrienne King, Ari Lehman, Robbi Morgan, Betsy Palmer, and Jeannine Taylor in Vendredi 13 (1980)
After a bombardment of terrible sequels and remakes, the horror movie genre is undergoing something of a renaissance of late with the excellent Babadook and this week's It Follows leading the charge.

Both films are driven by strong performances from up-and-coming female stars (Essie Davis and Maika Monroe), which brings to mind a classic horror movie trope: the Final Girl. Most prevalent in slasher films, the Final Girl is the last character standing who confronts a killer/ghost/demon and lives to tell the tale.

Digital Spy looks back at 7 of our favourite horror movie Final Girls, why they're iconic and what they're up to now...

1. Neve Campbell - Sidney Prescott in Scream

Many horror fans thought Drew Barrymore would end up being Scream's Final Girl when they first watched Wes Craven's 1996 horror, but the director offed her in the opening moments leaving Neve Campbell's Sidney Prescott to face down Ghostface.

Elementary season 3 casting news
Ophelia Lovibond will play Kitty Winter, Sherlock's new protege in Elementary season three...

News

With Watson out of the Brownstone, and Holmes having agreed to become an MI6 company man, the Elementary season two finale left the crime-solving twosome in disarray (or at least, in enough seeming disarray to make for a dramatic season three reunion).

Part of that upset is likely to come from one Kitty Winter, described as "Sherlock's latest protege" and played by English actress Ophelia Lovibond (Mr Sloane, Titanic: Blood And Steel, Nathan Barley).

A character named Kitty Winter, as Conan Doyle readers will know, featured in later Holmes story The Adventure Of The Illustrious Client as a young woman seeking revenge on a former lover and womanising scoundrel and murderer with a noble daughter in his current grasp. Will that be the case that throws Jonny Lee Miller's Sherlock and Ms Winter together?...

Ophelia Lovibond A Part Of “Guardians Of The Galaxy”
Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, and Dave Bautista in Les Gardiens de la Galaxie (2014)
Guardians Of The Galaxy has added another member to its cast, though it’s not filling the two open characters on the actual roster. Meet Ophelia Lovibond, a surefire winner of the Name Of The Week, a British actress with a resume that includes Mr. Popper’S Penguins, No Strings Attached, Nowhere Boy and Titanic: Blood And Steel. She has landed a supporting role in the cosmic epic from Marvel Studios.

Details of her character are mostly shrouded in secrecy, but we know that her character will be dealing with The Collector, one of the Elders of the Universe in the Marvel Universe. The Collector is an immortal being that collects (hey!) living beings and artifacts for safekeeping against something determined to destroy the Universe (enter Thanos). It’s obscure, heady, over the top cosmic stuff, and it signals that Marvel isn’t boiling down Guardians Of The Galaxy for the masses.

‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Adds Ophelia Lovibond To Cast
British actress Ophelia Lovibond has been cast in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. There’s no official word on who she’ll be playing, but some think that her character is closely tied to “The Collector,” one of the “Elders of the Universe” in the Marvel canon.

Galaxy is part of Marvel’s phase two of its superhero film slate and is directed by James Gunn. The project is described as a “space-set adventure movie” where sees Star Lord, who leads a group that includes Gamora and Drax.

Lovibond credits include Nowhere Boy and the TV series Titanic: Blood and Steel. She appeared in Mr. Popper’s Penguins with Jim Carrey, and No Strings Attached with Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher.

Other members of the cast members that have already been confirmed are Chris Pratt (Parks And Rec) as Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer,...

What The Collector’s Appearance in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Could Lead To
With the three live-action core characters of Guardians of the Galaxy reportedly locked down, and hints that the voice actors may have already been chosen to fill out the rest of the roster, Marvel Studios and director James Gunn are beginning to build the supporting cast.

Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana and Dave Bautista will be joined by Michael Rooker as the first four names attached to Marvel’s “Cosmic Avengers” feature and now they’re joined by another important female character.

THR has the scoop that British actress Ophelia Lovibond (Mr. Popper’s Penguins, Titanic: Blood and Steel) has joined the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy. She will reportedly play a character who “aides” The Collector, therefore confirming two additional characters we can expect to see in Marvel’s most cosmic movie to date.

Neve Campbell As Derek’s Sis On Grey’s Anatomy Tease
Party of Five and Scream star Neve Campbell has been paged to Seattle Grace Hospital. Get ready to see the actress in a whole new light when you preview her first ever appearance on Grey’s Anatomy. And it’s okay to page her, because she’s wearing scrubs.

In the video preview we see just how lovely Neve looks, even when her face is obscured by a surgeon’s mask. Neve will play Liz, one of Derek’s sisters for two drama packed episodes. You can see her for yourself on today’s video, and then on the Thursday episode of Grey’s on ABC. In this episode things start looking up for McDreamy and his damaged hand…I think.

To say “Lizzy’s” arrival is tense is an understatement. There are relationship issues at play and yet we hear she could be the one and only solution to Derek’s injury.

Neve Campbell: Survivor
Neve Campbell has had a wonderfully successful career, playing parts such as Julia (Party Of Five), Bonnie (The Craft), Suzie (Wild Things), and of course Sidney from the Scream film series. One thing that the character of Sidney and her newest character of Joanna Yaeger (Titanic: Blood And Steel) have in common is that they are both survivors. In honor of Titanic: Blood And Steel being released on Blu-Ray (available now) we thought it would be fun to take a look back at some of Neve’s most memorable moments. But first, check out the trailer for Titanic: Blood And Steel.

Titanic: Blood And Steel is the untold story of the building of a legend, and the many lives it affected during its three-year construction. To its wealthy investors, it was a dream. To the middle class who oversaw the project, it was a challenge. But to the working class who built it,...

What pop culture we're thankful for this Thanksgiving
Dan Stevens
This Thanksgiving, I’m thankful for Downton Abbey’s imminent return to television in the States. Yes, Jan. 6 is still a few weeks away, but I can’t wait to see whether Matthew (Dan Stevens) and Mary (Michelle Dockery) actually walk down the aisle — they really need to, I couldn’t take another breakup — and what brand of American sass Shirley MacLaine brings with her across the pond. Plus, on a more sappy note, the series spawned a regular Sunday night Masterpiece viewing/wine-drinking party with a group of friends that is priceless to me.

I’ve also polled my...

Julianna Margulies in The Good Wife (2009)
With his "Sex And The City" days long behind him, Chris Noth is keeping busy playing Peter Florrick on "The Good Wife" and with his debut as J.P. Morgan in Encore's "Titanic: Blood And Steel" miniseries.

In honor of his involvement with Beaulieu Vineyards' Give & Give Back campaign, Noth spoke with HuffPost via phone to talk about 'The Good Wife," working with Matthew Perry and why he's tired of being "Mr. Big."

Let's talk about "The Good Wife." So Peter's running against Matthew Perry's character, and he's also in "Go On." How are you coordinating that?

I'm kind of the wrong guy to ask. You'd have to ask the producers. I know they're planning on him coming back though. That's all I can tell you.

What do you think Peter's biggest obstacle will be in winning the election?

His past, and the cut-throat nature of politics in general.

Review: Merlin S5E1: Arthur's Bane
Arthur's Bane

Merlin kicked off its fifth season on Saturday, and whilst only a year has passed since it last graced our screens, in Camelot it's been three years. King Arthur and Queen Gwen are settling into their roles; and loyalty, respect and honour are the order of the day for Arthur’s knights, now orderly arranged around the infamous round table.

But wait! There are some empty chairs! Who's missing?

Sir Gwaine, Sir Percival and other uncredited extras in capes have stumbled into trouble on a worthy quest. Trouble's name? - Morgana of course. Katie McGrath's clenched jaw and piercing eyes are back, this time assisted by Liam Cunningham, as sorcerer Ruadan. I have always been a fan of Liam Cunningham, and he's certainly racking up the appearances this year, with Game Of Thrones and Titanic: Blood and Steel (yet to grace UK screens) under his belt. His...

Despite all the gay characters on television, is the legacy of Will & Grace that gay men are limited to the role of Wills or Jack, in both TV portrayals and how we expect each other to behave? The "Will" and "Jack" stereotype is an issue, but I think the picture is rosier. We have a good number of shows where two gay men are full parts of the cast and in a relationship with another regular (as opposed to the short story arcs that counted as most of Will Truman's love life). That might not be as much progress as we'd like, but I definitely think we've moved forward.

Chris Noth Is Boarding The Titanic As J.P. Morgan
New York -- The man widely known as "Big" gets even bigger: He's playing J.P. Morgan, one of history's towering business magnates.

It was one of Morgan's businesses that funded the Titanic, and Chris Noth appears in a supporting role in "Titanic: Blood and Steel," an epic 12-part miniseries about the building of the great ship. It premieres on six consecutive nights, with two episodes airing back to back, on the Encore cable network beginning Monday at 8 p.m. Edt.

"It was fun to come into this film and remind people whose wallet it was that was building the Titanic,...

In reaction to Mitt Romney's threats to cut funding for PBS, fans are organizing a Million Muppet March scheduled for November 3.

After repeatedly threatening to quit 30 Rock, Alec Baldwin fought to keep the Emmy-winning comedy from ending, offering to take a salary cut to ensure a full seventh season along with an eighth.

I'd be excited about the news that a Truth or Consequences and Treasure Hunt revival is in the works...

Neve Campbell in Talks to Join Titanic: Blood And Steel Miniseries
With series like Boardwalk Empire and Mad Men finding plenty of success and praise, period dramas seem to be all the rage on TV right now (especially with Pan-Am and The Playboy Club on the way this fall). Now another period drama is ready to set sail as Variety reports a new miniseries called Titanic: Blood and Steel is set to begin production in Serbia this week. The series, said to be a cross between Downtown Abbey and Boardwalk Empire, focuses on on designing and building the ship against the class-bound backdrop of Edwardian Belfast, Northern Ireland, where financial pressures led to fatal compromises. The series will be directed by Ciaran Donnelly (The Tudors) and is in the midst of snagging Neve Campbell to play a reporter covering the liner's first voyage who may have deeper reasons for being on board while Chris Noth is in talks to play financier J.P. Morgan.
