Saw V (2008) – What Happened to This Horror Movie?
Image
Like the movies in this series, we will continue to release fairly regularly and find out what happened to the Saw franchise. Saw V was already planned well before Saw IV even came out as the new creators had a whole storyline that needed multiple movies to pull off. When would the revenue stop coming in for this series? How would they bring back Tobin Bell’s Jigsaw yet again after he had now been dead for a full movie and the timeline had caught up to the present? It’s time to play another game as we find out what happened to Saw V.

After the massive 140-million-dollar success of Saw IV, Saw V would be a similar experience. Why change things around too much if the formula was working so well. It had a similar budget to its predecessor, going from 10 million to 10.8 million and brought back many...

Michael Stipe Sings R.E.M.’s “Wendell Gee” for First Time in 39 Years: Watch
Image
R.E.M. singer Michael Stipe has mostly avoided the spotlight in recent years, but Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign has temporarily changed that. On Thursday night (October 10th), he performed at his second rally in as many weeks, this time at R.E.M.’s former home base of Athens, Georgia.

During his four-song set, Stipe was backed by Now It’s Overhead’s Andy LeMaster and Mercyland’s David Barbe. After kicking it off by performing R.E.M.’s 1985 song “Wendell Gee” for the first time in 39 years, Stipe played his solo track “Your Capricious Soul,” his Big Red Machine collaboration “No Time for Love Like Now,” and revisited “Driver 8.”

Watch Stipe’s performances of “Wendell Gee” and “Driver 8” below.

Last Friday, Stipe teamed up with Jason Isbell at a rally in Pittsburgh, during which he broke out “Driver 8” for the first time since 2008. During the brief set,...

Charlie Hustle & the Matter of Pete Rose: Limited Series Review—A Definitive Deep Dive into a Delicately Divisive Sports Icon
Image
Pete Rose was a baseball legend unlike any other. He still holds the record for most career hits of any player in Major League Baseball history, an astonishing 4,256 over 24 seasons. But Rose’s story involved both dazzling success on the field and a dramatic fall from grace. After years of speculation, Rose was ultimately banned for life in 1989 for betting on baseball while both a player and manager, making him the only star ever exiled permanently from the sport for gambling.

The four-part documentary series Charlie Hustle & the Matter of Pete Rose aims to capture the entire scope of Rose’s epic tale. Using interviews with the man himself as well as former teammates, analysts delve into Rose’s playing career highlights and what drove him to become the consummate winner with a relentless work ethic. But the series also traces Rose’s well-known addictions to gambling and his denials...

‘The Painter’ Review
Image
Stars: Charlie Weber, Rryla McIntosh, Jon Voight, Madison Bailey, Marie Avgeropoulos, Luisa d’Oliveira, Max Montesi | Written by Brian Buccellato | Directed by Kimani Ray Smith

The Painter is another tale of a former covert operative forced to pick up his weapons and get back in the game. Can director Kimani Ray Smith and writer Brian Buccellato find a way to give the year a fresh start with the usual assortment of high-stakes espionage mixed with personal and professional betrayals?

Peter was one of the CIA’s top agents until he was sent to kill the same person his wife Elena’s team was sent to bring back alive. She lost the child she was carrying, and their marriage fell apart soon after.

It also destroyed his trust in the agency and in his adoptive father Henry Byrne. He adopted Peter after his parents, who were also agents, were killed in a...

Hear How Ilsey, Bon Iver Polish Neil Young’s ‘Heart of Gold’
Image
Ilsey, the singer-songwriter who cowrote “Nothing Breaks Like a Heart,” is now following her own heart on a Neil Young cover with Bon Iver. The musicians covered “Heart of Gold,” taking Young’s folky pining and turning it into a poppy meditation on the original’s lyrics that sometimes veers into the avant-garde with Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon singing the high harmonies in his head voice.

“This song has always spoken to me in a deep, personal way,” Ilsey said in a statement. “There’s something about the plaintive melody and the simple,...

New Washington, D.C. Documentary Film Festival To Launch
Image
Plans are in the works to launch a new documentary film festival in Washington, D.C. in June 2023, with a launch event to take place later this month.

Jamie Shor, president of PR Collaborative, and Sky Sitney, director of the film and media studies program at Georgetown University, are founders of the new event, called DC/Dox.

The announcement comes after the AFI announced earlier this year that it would merge AFI Docs this year into the AFI Fest in Los Angeles in November.

“Washington, D.C. has always been an essential home for leading-edge documentary films,” Sitney said in a statement. “With the explosion of non-fiction storytelling in recent years, we wanted to create a new space to showcase this vital work.”

Shor, whose firm had done PR for AFI Docs, said that the festival will be “serving as a critical marketplace for the launch of prestige documentary films in the nation’s capital.

5 Fun Rip-Offs of The Exorcist
Image
Peacock has a revival of The Exorcist trilogy on the way, with the first film set for an October 2023 release. Fans have expressed mixed reviews over the classic being touched, and understandably so. William Friedkin created a lasting horror masterpiece with the 1973 film The Exorcist, which many still regard as the scariest film ever made.

On a positive note, Ellen Burstyn will return as Reagan's mother for the first revamp. On another arguably positive one, The Exorcist II: The Heretic, widely regarded as one of the worst sequels ever made, is probably due for a new and improved revision. No matter where you sit on the concept of the classic series being redone, discussions regarding The Exorcist urge audiences to revisit the legendary haunt and its sequels. Every great, groundbreaking horror spurred brazen knock-off films which attempted to cash in on those pioneering flicks' popularity. The Thing, Halloween, Alien, and...

‘Endangered Species’: Where An Arrogant Family Get Caught in The Most Dangerous Game
Image
Photo: ‘Endangered Species’/Blue Sky Films ‘Endangered Species’ is the newest film by writer-director M.J. Bassett. Advertised as an action and a thriller, ‘Endangered Species’ really focuses on inter-familial struggles and relationships. We’re given first-hand looks at how the Halsey family operates and what each of their strengths and weaknesses are. As the film progresses, it ventures off of the path of a family drama and tries too hard to be something it isn’t. The story of the film seems to be too preachy and too obvious about its true message of conservation. Every dialogue exchange seems to relate to the core politics of the film, which takes away from the viewing experience. Senseless gore distracts from holes in the story, but ultimately, ‘Endangered Species’ has a talented cast and a broken story. Sharon Van Etten Releases Sprawling Cover of Daniel Johnston’s ‘Some Things Last a Long Time’
Image
Sharon Van Etten has officially released her cover of Daniel Johnston’s “Some Things Last a Long Time.”

As Stereogum notes, Van Etten recorded the cover, plus an original song, for the 2020 documentary, Feels Good Man, about the creator of Pepe the Frog. (It’s unclear if this had any bearing on Van Etten’s song choice, but Johnston designed a cartoon frog of his own, “Jeremiah the Innocent,” who appears on the famous Hi, How Are You? mural in Austin; Jeremiah, however, has not been adopted as a favored meme of the alt-right.

Heidi Ewing on Documentary Filmmaking After Trump and How Biden Could Impact Immigration
Image
Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady know how to find compelling subjects. From the religious extremists of “Jesus Camp” to the abortion clinics of “12th & Delaware” and the ex-Hasidic Jews expelled from their community in “One of Us,” the documentary filmmaking duo have been capturing urgent scenarios for years. On Wednesday, while much of America experienced the presidential inauguration at home, Ewing and Grady were running around D.C. with their cameras, working on a new project. For Ewing, that was business as usual. “Two of our subjects are U.S. journalists, and we go where they go,” she said by phone the next day.

Co-executive-produced with Ronan Farrow as part of his HBO deal, with Loki Films producing, the movie has the working title “Endangered” and follows several journalists around the world. Amid working on the project, Ewing also premiered her narrative debut, “I Carry You With Me,” at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival.

‘Grizzly II: Revenge’ Review: An Infamous Abandoned Film Gets Finished … Off
Image
After the phenomenal success of “Jaws” in 1975, there was a cash-in surge for further “nature strikes back” creature features, as mankind was successively imperiled by dogs, cats, whales, buffalo, piranha and so on. One of the most blatant of these knockoffs was William Girdler’s 1976 “Grizzly,” an undistinguished tale of hairy menace running amok in a national park. It was, nonetheless, a hit — in fact the biggest indie success story of its year, purportedly grossing about fifty times its modest $750,000 budget. As quickly as it had been rushed out to ride “Jaws’” coattails, however, a sequel was slow in coming.

Well, there’s ordinary “slow,” and then there’s the Rip Van Winkle-grade variety. After decades spent as a famously abandoned project, “Grizzly II” finally hits theaters and VOD in 2021. For reasons that remain murky, the Hungary-shot horror thriller originally titled “Grizzly II: The Concert” went unfinished after principal photography...

‘Grizzly II: Revenge’: Film Review

Don’t be fooled by the marketing materials. Yes, Charlie Sheen, George Clooney and Laura Dern do appear in the long unseen Grizzly II: Revenge. But despite their top billing, the three future stars, looking impossibly young, are only onscreen for the first five minutes or so before their characters are killed by the titular beast. That, and the fact that the film went unseen for the next 37 years or so, turned out to be their lucky breaks.

Drive-In Dust Offs: Night Of The Demon (1983)
Image
I’d have to rifle through the annals to know for sure, but I’m pretty certain I’ve never covered a Bigfoot film; the reasoning is simple of course – I haven’t seen an older Bigfoot film worth covering (and Harry and the Hendersons doesn’t count). Until now that is. Night of the Demon (1980) doesn’t adopt a quasi-documentary style and hint at the monster through testimony; oh no, it gives you one (1) large hairy dude who messes up a lot of folks in a lot of messy ways. Night of the Demon isn’t very good, but it’s pretty damn great.

It was released on video by Vcii Home Entertainment in ’83, where I’m sure some unsuspecting viewers were caught off guard by how grisly it is (as opposed to Grizzly). It even made the UK’s Video Nasty list back in the day; understandable as all the others I guess,...

Unhinged (2020) – Review
Image
In the realm of classic animated shorts, many plots hinged on the main character (often the “series star”) losing their patience, as their frustrations cause them to go into “action” or even “revenge” mode (often with the sight gag of steam spewing from their ears or through the tops of their noggins). Popeye’s “I’s had all I kin’ stan’ an’ I can’t stands no more!”, Bugs Bunny’s “Of course you realize this means war!”. and even Droopy Dog’s “Know what? I’m mad.”. This would spill into live-action flicks, with the gentle cowboy or farmer taking a stand. In the 1970s, epitomized by Network’s Howard Beale ranting, “I’m as mad as Hell and I’m not gonna’ take it anymore!”, the normal guy, the everyman was pushed into the breaking point in comedies like The Prisoner Of Second Avenue and thrillers like Death Wish...

Film Composer Rachel Portman Uses First Solo Album, ‘Ask the River,’ to Speak Up for the Environment, Instrumentally
Image
English composer Rachel Portman today releases her first solo album. Titled “Ask the River,” it’s a collection of original pieces for piano, violin and cello that reflect her feelings about our fragile environment.

That the release happens to come in the middle of a global pandemic is coincidental, but it also couldn’t be more timely. Portman’s music conjures up images of a pastoral English countryside: warm and breezy, cool and contemplative, green fields and babbling brooks.

“I had spent a lot of time immersed in nature, and I wanted to try and express that,” she says from her country home 50 miles outside of London, “and express the beauty of what I see as many, many different aspects of nature around us. We’re increasingly unconnected to the natural world. We don’t seem to be part of the land; we seem to use it as a resource instead.

Trailer for Long-Awaited, Long-Lost Horror Sequel 'Grizzly II Revenge'
George Clooney, Charlie Sheen, and Laura Dern in Grizzly II: The Predator (2020)
"I don't want a cloud of fear on this concert! Now you get that grizzly, and get it now!" Gbgb Intl. has unveiled an official trailer for a long lost horror film titled Grizzly II Revenge, which is somehow getting a release nearly 37 years after the project originally fell apart. So... the story goes that in 1983, a production team hired a Hungarian filmmaker to direct a sequel to Grizzly, a 1976 cult classic horror film about an 18-foot-tall grizzly bear that terrorizes a state park. This sequel picks up where that one left off, with a momma bear seeking revenge for her cub's murder. The film takes place at a concert at Yellowstone National Park, where thousnds gather to see a show. But then the production all fell apart. Somehow, it's finally finished and ready to be released. The original cast (from '83!) features George Clooney, Laura Dern, Charlie Sheen, Louise Fletcher,...

Romulus, My Father (2007)
ITV Studios European TV Drama Push Boosted by ‘Romulus’ Pre-Sales (Exclusive)
Romulus, My Father (2007)
Berlin — ITV Studios push into European drama has been boosted by pre-sales on “Romulus” and a slew of deals across a burgeoning slate of non-English language productions as ITV Studios aims to position as a world-class player in global content production.

Announced at this week’s Berlinale Series Market, the sales play off ITV Studios acquisition of stakes in European companies – such as France’s Beaubourg Stories, a label at ITV majority-owned “Profilages” producer Tetra Media Studio, and its minority stake in Italy’s high-flying Cattleya (“ZeroZeroZero”) – as well as early partnerships on single titles from fast-escalating production forces in Europe, such as Telefonica’s Movistar Plus.

Produced by Cattleya, Groenlandia and Sky, shot in archaic Latin, and reworking Rome’s creation story into ambitious high-end drama, “Romulus” has been acquired by HBO Europe and Sbs in Australia.

The Sbs deal takes in two further crime procedurals from Cattleya, one...

George Clooney, Charlie Sheen, and Laura Dern in Grizzly II: The Predator (2020)
Grizzly II: Revenge Trailer: Long-Lost Horror Sequel Is Finally Getting Released
George Clooney, Charlie Sheen, and Laura Dern in Grizzly II: The Predator (2020)
Grizzly II: Revenge is coming. The long-unfinished sequel has been in a vault for decades, with only inferior bootlegs floating around. The sequel, also known as Grizzly II: The Predator and as Grizzly II: The Concert, was originally shot in 1983 in Hungary by director Andr&#233 Sz&#246ts, but was never released to theaters. The story behind the movie is just as epic as the first trailer for the newly completed project, which you can check out below.

The Grizzly II: Revenge story revolves around a menacing 15-ft grizzly bear who reacts to the slaughter of her cub by killing anyone that gets in her way. In the 3 days before the major concert taking place in Yellowstone National Park, the gigantic grizzly has brutally attacked campers Ron (George Clooney), Tina (Laura Dern) and Lance (Charlie Sheen), poachers and a park ranger. The terror doesn't end there as the giant grizzly bear...
