Filming on the sixth and final season of “The Handmaid’s Tale” has, at long last, begun, Hulu announced on Friday. The network shared a photo of star Elisabeth Moss, who’s also directing and holding a clapboard, with the note that the Emmy-winning series will return in spring of 2025.

It’s been nearly two years since the Season 5 finale and a year-and-a-half since executive producers Erich Tuchman and Yahlin Chang were named co-showrunners for Season 6.

Longtime showrunner and series creator Bruce Miller stepped away from the drama after five seasons to focus on the development of its upcoming sequel series “The Testaments,” which like “Handmaid’s Tale” is based on the book of the same name by Margaret Atwood. Espionage stories like The Veil, the latest FX on Hulu production, are very hard to pull off. The reality of spycraft is at odds with the heightened world of television; a large portion of it is a game of patience and conversation. This leaves TV writers trying to split the difference between what is realistic and adding some dramatic license to keep the audience engaged. The Veil somewhat loses that battle, but not for lack of effort.

The six-episode project hails from writer Steven Knight, who also penned the Tom Hardy-led Taboo for FX but is better known for the smash hit Peaky Blinders and its upcoming movie. It's a good fit for Hulu, as that same audience will recognize star and producer Elisabeth Moss from her award-winning role in the streamer's The Handmaid's Tale.

As the investigation unravels, so does the truth about how even the closest relationships can change over time.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, hit drama series has been renewed for a sixth -- and final -- season.

“It’s been a very, very, very luxurious time that I’ve had to think about what happens at the end of this story and exactly how we’d like to get there as a company,” creator, showrunner and executive producer Bruce Miller told the outlet of the decision to end the show.

“I’m very glad we’re being able to do it on our own terms because I know how lucky that makes us — all the actors and creative people who put their hearts and souls into it — to close up the play the way you want."

Hell, even “The West Wing” put President Bartlet’s daughter, Zoey, through a traumatic kidnapping plot. And then there’s “The Handmaid’s Tale,” a show that could’ve been titled, “How To Endure Oppression.” For five seasons (so far), June Osborne has been the audience’s envoy into a world of overt misogyny, casual torture, and emotional anguish, which makes Moss’ visage our primary translator of oft-unimaginable depravity. Reed Morano, the Emmy-winning Season 1 director and series’ visual tone-setter, recognized that framing June’s plight via extreme close-ups and long, lingering shots could utilize the intimacy afforded by television to build a deeper connection to a dystopian story.

Deep into its run, “The Handmaid’s Tale” has found itself — or a version of itself, at once leaner and stranger — again.

In the past, I’ve written that this show, which boasts a strong ensemble cast supporting probably the most agile performer on television, has been frustratingly unable to emerge from the potency of its set-up. Season after season was spent re-litigating the harms done to Elisabeth Moss’ June, all while reducing her from a recognizable human into a character history. The show made the point that June had been altered by trauma too well. Now, though, June feels liberated; in the wake of Season 4’s conclusion, in which our heroine led a mob killing of her tormentor (Joseph Fiennes), Moss’ performance feels opened up, and so does the series’ creative universe.

This new season, cannily, largely takes place outside of the show’s post-America theocracy of Gilead, and beyond...

The Emmy-winning Handmaid’s Tale star will topline an FX-produced thriller called The Veil. Moss will also be an executive producer of the limited series, which comes from Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight.

“We’re excited to continue our partnership with Steven Knight on The Veil and thrilled to have Elisabeth Moss sign on for the lead role,” said Nick Grad, president original programming at FX. “Steven’s scripts are riveting and no doubt will showcase Elisabeth’s exceptional talent.”

The Veil will focus on the fraught relationship between two women who, according to the show’s logline, “play a deadly game of truth and lies on the road from Istanbul to Paris and London. One woman has a secret, the other a mission to reveal it before thousands of lives are lost.

Last decade, only two performers took home the Best Drama Actress Emmy more than once for the same show: Claire Danes for “Homeland” back to back in 2012 and ’13 and Julianna Margulies for “The Good Wife” in 2011 and ’14 — both under the tape system and on a ranked ballot. The full list of nominees for this year’s MTV Movie & TV Awards was unveiled Monday, including a new set of “Unscripted” categories that recognize reality television. “RuPaul’s Drag Race” leads that pack with four nominations.

Adrien Brody and Vera Farmiga will star in Ant Timpson’s mystery thriller The Salamander Lives Twice, which XYZ Films has boarded for worldwide sales at AFM 2020 Online and jointly represents the US with CAA Media Finance.

Production is scheduled for spring 2021 with Emma Slade of Firefly Films producing alongside Katie Holly for Blinder Films. Timpson and XYZ Films serve as executive producers.

Toby Harvard wrote the screenplay from a story by Timpson and Harvard about an injured man (Brody) with an impenetrable briefcase and no memory who washes up on a remote island.

McKenna Grace will join “The Handmaid’s Tale” for its fourth season, an individual with knowledge told TheWrap.

Grace, who most recently co-starred with Viola Davis in “Troop Zero,” will portray Mrs. Keyes, described as “a sharply intelligent, teenaged wife of a much older Commander who rules her farm and household with confidence.”

Production on Season 4 of the Elisabeth Moss-led drama was just getting underway in Canada back in March when it was shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic. The show’s fourth season was originally expected to launch this fall, but Hulu has now shifted its release to next year. Production resumed two weeks ago in Toronto.

Along with Moss, the series stars Joseph Fiennes, Yvonne Strahovski, Samira Wiley, Alexis Bledel, Ann Dowd, Max Minghella, Madeline Brewer, O-t Fagbenle, Amanda Brugel and Bradley Whitford.

Issa Rae and Jordan Peele have come on board Universal Pictures’ family drama “Sinkhole,” based on Leyna Krow’s short story about a mysterious sinkhole.

The announcement was made Wednesday, a day after Rae received Emmy nominations for comedy series and best actress in a comedy series for the fourth season of HBO’s “Insecure.” “Sinkhole” is being developed as a potential starring vehicle for Rae, who will also produce.

The story centers on a young family knowingly moving into a house with a sinkhole in the backyard and discovering that the sinkhole that manages to take all things that are broken and destroyed and make them perfect again.

Peele and Win Rosenfeld will produce for their Monkeypaw Productions. Rae, Montrel McKay and Sara Rastogi who will produce for Issa Rae Productions. Krow is executive producing alongside Alex Davis-Lawrence.

Universal, Monkeypaw Productions and Issa Rae Productions are developing the film based on a short story by Leyna Krow after Universal and Monkeypaw won the rights to the short story in a competitive situation. The project falls under Monkeypaw’s exclusive five-year deal with Universal.
