20 Most Perverted Characters in Anime History, Ranked
Image
Let’s be honest—anime has this quirky habit of turning even the creepiest of perverts into oddly lovable weirdos. Whether it’s some old man peeking through the hot springs fence or a teenager with a stack of magazines that shouldn’t be on school grounds, anime’s parade of lecherous characters somehow keeps us entertained. They don’t all behave the same either—some are open about their naughty side, others hide behind their fantasies.

Meanwhile, some are just plain eccentric, and a few have twisted minds that border on scary. Still, these characters have left such a mark that it’s hard not to recognize their chaotic, often hilarious, and occasionally unsettling charm. So, here’s a list of anime’s most notorious pervs who’ve managed to stay in the spotlight for all the wrong—and strangely right—reasons.

20. Ataru Moroboshi (Urusei Yatsura) Ataru Moroboshi in...

10 Popular Anime Romances That Haven't Aged Well
Image
Romance anime wouldn't be the same without the main relationship driving the plot. Those relationships define the genre and expectations of the series they're in. Relationships can even dictate the direction an anime with a romance subplot can take. However, anime, like everything else, is prone to change.

What is acceptable one day may later become toxic with age and hindsight. This includes anime relationships. Fans may adore certain couples, but these ships don't always age well. Sometimes fans don't see how toxic and uncomfortable these relationships are until long after a series is over.

Mamoru & Usagi Are Problematic in the Original Sailor Moon Anime Streaming On Hulu

Sailor Moon may be a magical girl anime, but the series would feel like something was missing if it lacked the relationship between the heroine Usagi and her love interest Mamoru. Tuxedo Mask swept fans off their feet just as much as he did Usagi.

Now Is the Perfect Time for a ‘Tokyo Ghoul’ Remake and Here’s Why
Image
Tokyo Ghoul is one of the most tragic anime adaptations in recent times. The manga had set up a grim-dark reality and attracted many fans, but the anime was unable to depict its essence properly. By heading in an anime-original direction, the anime disappointed fans by being highly disappointing and was a massive failure.

Tokyo Ghoul Anime Series | Credit: Studio Pierrot

These are the anime that went down the wrong path and brought an ill reputation to the original work as well. Tokyo Ghoul is one of the biggest examples as due to its anime’s reputation for being just plain bad, the manga has lost out on its popularity as well.

There is a need to do justice to the source material (Tokyo Ghoul manga), which, compared to the anime adaptation, was many miles better. Sui Ishida (the author) himself said it could have been so much better and...

10 Canceled Anime That Can Finally End Their Story With a Revival
Image
The most notable trend in the modern anime industry is revivals and remakes. Many anime studios have reached into the past to put a fresh twist on old classics (like Ranma 1/2 or Urusei Yatsura) or to bring back a series that didn't finish telling its story during its original anime adaptation (like Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War). Naturally, this trend has got fans excitedly speculating which anime series will get a revival next.

Anime history is packed with series that, despite being praised by fans and critics, didn't get to finish their story before being canceled. There are also series that finished after completely adapting the manga they were based on, only for the mangaka to continue the story later, leaving anime viewers with an incomplete experience.

In 1989, voice actor Saeko Shimazu played the role of Kodachi Kuno from Kitty Films' original Ranma 1/2 anime series. Over 35 years after the series' conclusion, she recently learned the combination of factors that compelled staff to pick her for the job.

These details came to light in a recent interview conducted by Mantan Web. Before playing Kodachi, Shimazu was involved with several other anime based on manga created by Rumiko Takahashi. In the original Urusei Yatsura (1981), she portrayed Ataru Moroboshi's human fiance, Miyake Shinobu. Several years later, she also took on the role of Kuroki Sayoko from Maison Ikkoku (1986). Despite having a great deal of experience as a voice actor, Shimazu quickly realized that Kodachi was on a "whole different level" than her previous roles.

The Best Anime to Watch This Winter: ‘Solo Leveling,’ ‘Metallic Rouge,’ and More
Image
New Year’s is a time to make resolutions. Maybe you want to work out more, or sort out your love life, or make a big career change. And maybe your resolution is to watch more indie movies, or possibly some anime.

2023 was a banner year for anime as a medium, between great series like “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off” and a major film release with Hayao Miyazaki’s last masterpiece “The Boy and the Heron.” As such, 2024’s anime offerings have a lot to live up to — and based on the lineup of shows that are premiering this January, we’re off to a promising start.

As with every season, winter 2024 has both returning favorites as well as new shows to enjoy. One particularly anticipated returnee is the beloved but rarely airing “Blue Exorcist,” which is premiering its third season after its second bowed back in 2017. Classic Anime That Should've Never Gotten A Second Season
Image
Anime fans have endless options when it comes to what they consume and there’s still lots of debate on the benefits of classic, nostalgic anime series and the current modern crop. Some of anime’s most beloved series like Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, and Serial Experiments Lain are all older programs that manage to tell full, complete stories in a concise number of episodes.

Anime that run for extended periods are not inherently inferior to shorter series, but there’s something to be said for brevity and not overstaying one’s welcome. There are some exceptional anime series from the past that could have even better reputations if they cut themselves short and didn’t give into the temptation of second seasons and beyond. Sometimes a single season is all that’s needed.

Michael B. Jordan's Favorite Anime List Might Be A Sign Of A Bigger Problem
Image
As part of the press tour for his new film "Creed III" -- whose fight scenes bring the franchise into anime territory -- Michael B. Jordan listed his five favorite anime series on BBC Radio 1: "'One Piece,'" "Dragon Ball," "Naruto," "Bleach," and "Hunter x Hunter." These are all worthy picks, even though it "would take the average person over 957 hours ... to complete Jordan's top five anime recommendations," as Isaiah Colbert said at Kotaku. "One Piece" has lasted for over a thousand episodes. "Dragon Ball" remains one of the most popular anime ever. "Naruto" featured some of the wildest fight scenes in anime history, while "Bleach" at its best was just cool. "Hunter x Hunter" is messier, spanning two adaptations and a source comic that has yet to finish. But its creator Yoshiharu Togashi has over 3 million followers on Twitter, and his dedicated fans haven't given up on him yet.

Why The Fire Hunter Is Your New Anime Obsession
Image
Spend enough time in anime fandom and you hear a common refrain: "They don't make shows like they used to anymore." Do they? There's plenty of great anime still being made: Fall 2022 alone brought an incredible bumper crop of anime series across multiple genres. Some may prefer the masterpieces of the past, but those masterpieces were exceptional even then. Even so, it is indisputable that certain kinds of anime are simply not made anymore. Original anime series are scarce. Modern shows rarely last beyond 12 or 13 episodes. Robots drawn in traditional 2D animation, outside of specialist studios like Trigger or Sunrise, are rare. Even the newest "Gundam" series, usually the industry standard for 2D giant robot shows, struggled weekly to maintain the standard of its mechanical animation. To find series like the long-running psychological thriller "Monster," or the slice-of-life mystery "Haibane Renmei," you have to go back 20 or 30 years in the medium's history.
