Miles Teller’s popularity exploded a few years ago thanks to the release of Top Gun: Maverick, and now a more recent sci-fi thriller from the star has stumbled into profound streaming success. Teller stars alongside Anya Taylor-Joy in The Gorge, a sci-fi monster film following two operatives who are stationed at towers on opposite sides of a dangerous gorge. The Gorge hit Apple TV+ earlier this year on February 14, and despite not receiving any form of theatrical release with a $70 million budget, the film has found sustained dominance on streaming charts, currently in the top 10 in more than 50 countries around the world, including occupying the #3 spot in the United States. The Gorge earned 63% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and the audience-driven Popcornmeter came to rest at 75%.

Johnny Depp and Penlope Cruz are to star in their fourth movie together, Day Drinker, from the producers of the John Wick franchise. The two actors have shared the big screen three times so far, in Blow, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and Kenneth Branaghs Murder on the Orient Express. While their movies didnt resonate strongly with critics - their highest-rated movie on Rotten Tomatoes is Murder on the Orient Express with a 60% score - they have made $1.1 billion at the global box office. The bulk of that gross comes from Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

Now, Lionsgate confirms Depp and Cruz are working together again on Day Drinker. From the producers of John Wick, Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, its marketed as an action thriller by director Marc Webb, who is known for his work on 500 Days of Summer, The Amazing Spider-Man, and its sequel.

In what might be his biggest starring role in years since he was let go from the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise, Johnny Depp will star alongside Penélope Cruz in an action thriller for Lionsgate and director Marc Webb, the studio announced on Monday.

Depp and Cruz are teaming up on screen for what will be the fourth time in a thriller called “Day Drinker.” They previously starred together in “Blow,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” and “Murder on the Orient Express.”

“Day Drinker” follows a cruise ship bartender who meets a mysterious day drinker — only for both of them to find themselves entangled in a criminal underbelly, and connected in unexpected ways.

Lionsgate has closed a deal for Johnny Depp and Penélope Cruz to reteam for a fourth time in “Day Drinker,” the studio announced on Monday.

The film will be directed by Marc Webb (“Snow White”). Depp and Cruz previously co-starred in the features “Blow,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” and “Murder on the Orient Express.”

In “Day Drinker,” a cruise ship bartender meets a mysterious day drinker—only for both of them to find themselves entangled in a criminal underbelly, and connected in unexpected ways.

Lionsgate is launching international sales at AFM. Chelsea Kujawa is overseeing the project for Lionsgate. Dan Freedman negotiated the deals for the studio.

Phoenix Pictures acquired the rights to the film, originally titled Demeter, over two decades before the movie made its way to the screen.

August 2023 sees the release of two major football documentaries on HBO and Max. The first is the premiere of Hard Knocks on Aug. 10. The new season of long-running NFL training camp docuseries will center on the New York Jets, new employers of legendary quarterback Aaron Rodgers. On Aug. 23, Max will air the aptly named Bs High. The doc tells the stranger-than-fiction story of high school football team Bishop Sycamore, which pulled off one of the more notable sports scams you’re likely to ever hear about.

Not of the football variety but in keeping with the North American sports theme will be season 2 of Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty on Aug.

Health have tapped metal heavy-hitters Lamb of God for “Cold Blood,” the latest single from the Los Angeles noise rock outfit’s upcoming LP, Disco4 :: Part II, out April 8.

Nicolas Cage has appeared in dozens of movies of varying critical reception over the years, but his latest movie Pig has risen above the rest as his highest-rated live-action movie on Rotten Tomatoes. With a 97% Certified Fresh score, Pig has topped Red Rock West at 95%, Moonstruck at 94%, and Face/Off at 92%. The 97% score is tied with the animated movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which featured Cage as the voice of Spider-Man Noir.

This is certainly great news for Nicolas Cage, who has developed a bit of a reputation for accepting all roles thrown his way, for better or for worse. He has previously starred in universally panned movies with 0% rotten scores on Rotten Tomatoes, like Deadfall and Grand Isle. Titles like The Wicker Man, Bangkok Dangerous, and Arsenal didn't fare much better. Perhaps this just goes to show that Cage is indeed a fantastic actor, he just needs the right material to work with.

In the wake of having the pandemic’s top grossing Hollywood movie, F9 ($593.7 million WW), screenwriter Daniel Casey is penning Agbo’s feature adaptation of the 1978 Japanese anime series Battle of the Planets.

Casey is working with Joe and Anthony Russo and their Agbo to help construct the foundation for a Battle of the Planets universe. Casey’s feature screenplay will kick off the expansion of this franchise across multiple media. Agbo and Casey will work with Tatsunoko, the creators of the iconic, original anime series, on concepts to explore and expand the IP in-depth.

An official trailer for Paranormal Attraction has arrived online. This is the latest from filmmaker Alex T. Hwang, who previously helmed Lilith and Prey, in Cold Blood. In this case, Hwang is taking on the well-trodden supernatural subgenre of horror. Though it doesn't seem to be a riff on the Paranormal Activity franchise or anything along those lines. Instead, we are getting a thriller with a supernatural twist, complete with a side of romance. There is, at the very least, a lot going on here.

Starring Susan Sarandon, Kate Winslet, Mia Wasikowska, Sam Neill, Rainn Wilson and Bex Taylor-Klaus, Blackbird premiered at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival. Screen Media plans to release the film, acquired from Millennium Media, in September.

In Blackbird, Lily (Sarandon) has learned she is terminally ill with Als, so she and her husband Paul (Neill), gather the family and loved ones together to discuss her options. Screen Media has picked up all North American rights and select territories from Millennium Media to Roger Michell’s ensemble drama Blackbird starring Susan Sarandon, Kate Winslet, Mia Wasikowska, and Sam Neill.

Additionally, the distributor has acquired the film for German pay and free TV, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia.

The Live Playoffs for Season 18 of “The Voice” concluded last Tuesday, leaving nine artists in contention for the title. One member from each team was voted through by America and each coach then had a chance to save another artist they wanted to move forward. That left Blake Shelton, John Legend, Nick Jonas and Kelly Clarkson each with two artists on their teams before the live instant save.

In that instant save leading into the semifinals, the remaining member from each team with the most audience votes earned a chance to compete. Joanna Serenko from Team Blake ended up defeating Mandi Castillo from Team Legend, Michael Williams from Team Nick and Cedrice from Team Kelly. That bumps Team Blake up to three contenders, but does that increase his odds of winning his seventh title?

Since Ava DuVernay’s latest dive into the social justice system, “When They See Us,” dropped on Netflix on May 31, the criticism and backlash toward former New York prosecutor Linda Fairstein has been swift and strong.

Fairstein was painted as the villain in DuVernay’s four-episode limited series, and she has since been the subject of a #CancelLindaFairstein hashtag online.

When producers of “When They See Us” reached out to the prosecutor-turned-author, Fairstein made it clear she would talk to them if they were not also going to talk to the five accused (and exonerated) men in the case: Korey Wise, Antron McCray, Yosef Salaam, Kevin Richardson and Raymond Santana. Felicity Huffman plays Fairstein in the series.
