Lil Wayne Fleetingly Reminds Us Why He’s One of the Best
Image
Two years ago, Lil Wayne released a career-spanning compilation, I Am Music. It seems like an impossible task to summarize three decades of music that dates to his febrile debut as one-half of B.G.z in 1995, spans a record-breaking number of entries on the Billboard Hot 100 as well as dozens of official mixtapes and countless unauthorized leaks, and solidifies him as one of the most prolific and influential acts of his generation. But I Am Music largely skips over his heralded early material – there’s nothing from his first...

What Happened to Jeff Goldblum?
Image
Jeff Goldblum, 25, has forgotten his mantra. At least, his nameless party guest character – dubbed “Man on the Phone” in the screenplay – has. And it’s the way he delivered that line in 1977’s Annie Hall that made him stand out despite only having a few seconds of screen time. Somehow – just by being himself – Jeff Goldblum turned a throwaway bit into one of the funniest lines in one of the funniest films.

As for Jeff Goldblum himself, he says his mantras are “I am grateful” and “Accept, enjoy, enthuse.” And that, across 50 years on the big screen, is as truthful as it gets when it comes to Jeff Goldblum.

Let’s find out: What Happened to…Jeff Goldblum?

Jeff Goldblum was born on October 22nd, 1952 just outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the son of a doctor and a radio broadcaster, the sort of brains and art pairing that perfectly describes the...

by Eleo Billet

After “Believer,” Lee Hae-young returns with a patriotic historical film about Korea's liberation movement in the 1930s. A spin-off of some sort to “The Age of Shadows”, the director mixes his inspirations between film noir, action flick, and “The Handmaiden” through its combative lesbian heroines.

Korea, 1933. The country has been under Japanese rule for more than twenty years. However, organized groups of Koreans are resisting colonization and risking their lives for the independence of their homeland. Kris Jenner Stars As ‘Mother’ In Meghan Trainor’s New Music Video
Image
Kris Jenner is literally “Mother” in the new music video for Meghan Trainor’s new single, released on Friday.

The ultimate momager and “Kardashians” star teams up with Trainor for one of her most iconic videos yet, serving Hollywood glam as the two real-life mothers dance and sing along to the upbeat track.

In the clip, directed by Trainor’s longtime collaborator Charm Ladonna, Jenner rocks her classic pixie cut hairstyle but adds a striking twist — her dark locks are platinum blonde — and stuns in a long white gown with massive sleeves and matching gloves. Trainor, 29, and Jenner, 67, then unite side-by-side in matching black gowns accessorized with dazzling diamonds. Fantasia 2022 Review: Special Delivery, Park So-dam Slays The Streets Of Seoul In This Action Thriller
Image
There’s nothing like a good, old-fashioned car chase, and director Park Dae-min’s Special Delivery is chock full of them. Borrowing liberally from Hollywood bangers like The Transporter series, Baby Driver, and Drive; Special Delivery is the familiar story of a beast behind the wheel whose usual cold demeanor gets tested when she gets emotionally entangled with her cargo. Derivative, sure, but an exciting watch that focuses heavily on solid performances from its leads and thrilling but grounded stunt driving, Special Delivery is definitely worth checking out. Jang Eun-ha is a special kind of driver. She’s the one who gets the call when a package absolutely must get from one place to another, even though there might be forces trying to keep it...

Fantasia 2022: ‘Special Delivery’ Review
Image
Stars: So-dam Park, Kim Eui-Sung, Yeon Woo-Jin, Jung Hyun-jun, Song Sae-Byeok, Han Hyun-min | Written and Directed by Park Dae-min

Special Delivery (aka Special Cargo), which recently made its North American debut at Fantasia, could best be described as a female-fronted cross between The Transporter and Leon the Professional. Eun-ha is a courier working for Baek whose scrap yard is a front for a service delivering “anything the post office will not”.

That includes Kim Du-Sik a former baseball player caught in a gambling scandal and trying to dodge the mob and the police. But when the mob gets to him before she can Eun-ha finds herself with his young son Seo-won and a key fob that unlocks a 30,000,000 bank account in her car. She also has an army of goons led by corrupt cop Jo Kyung-Pil who will do anything to get it back on her trail.

Interview with Dae-min Park: South-Korean Cinema Needs More Female Protagonists
Image
Dae-min Park is a South-Korean director known for his features “Private Eye” (2009) and “Seondal: The Man Who Sells the River” (2016). Park started studying architecture, but never finished his studies, as he began taking his passion for movies more seriously and started turning it into a career. After several short features, he directed “Private Eye”, which was nominated for awards at Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival and Santa Barbara International Film Festival 2009.

His latest work is the crime action feature “Special Delivery” (also known as “Special Cargo”) which stars actress So-dam Park, who international audiences know for her role in Joon-ho Park’s “Parasite”. Ir premiered at South-Korean cinemas in January 2022, and became one of the first genre features released after the Covid-19 pandemic and the following lockdown.

On the occasion of “Special Delivery” being screened at Fantasia International Film Festival, the filmmaker talks about the genesis of the project, working...

Film Review: Special Delivery (2022) by Park Dae-min
Image
Although he was on his best way to become an architect and had even completed his studies, eventually his passion for cinema and making movies was too strong to resist so that Pak Dae-min became a director. When asked about his main sources for inspiration, he talks at length about his love for the works of such directors as Takeshi Kitano or Bong Joon-ho, but also his aim to make a Hollywood-like blockbuster in the veins of Steven Spielberg. After “Private Eye” and “Seondal: The Man Who Sells the River”, “Special Delivery” (also known as “Special Cargo”) is his third feature and already screened at film festivals such as Rotterdam International Film Festival and Fantasy Filmfest Nights. Considering his aforementioned goal, “Special Delivery” is certainly a step in the right direction, combining fast-paced action with drama and a great central performance by Park So-dam, an actress popular since her role...

First Look at DC Comics 2022 Pride Issue Includes Stories From Nicole Maines, Kevin Conroy and More
Image
This year, DC Comics is celebrating Pride Month with a bang.

On May 31, the company will launch “DC Pride 2022,” a 104-page anthology comic featuring stories from LGBTQ creators and focusing on queer characters from the DC universe. The comic will open with an introduction from Nicole Maines, the transgender rights activist and actor who portrayed Nia Nal on “Supergirl” in 2018, becoming the first trans actor to play a superhero on television. The issue is also slated to feature a teaser for a future project from DC involving Maines.

Among the many exciting projects comes the story “Finding Batman,” which is written by Kevin Conroy with art by J. Bone and lettering by Aditya Bidikar. Although the information about the story remains limited, “Finding Batman” is described as a “personal story” from Conroy, who is well-known for voicing Batman in various animated properties, starting with the critically acclaimed “Batman: The Animated Series,...

China-Italy Co-Production ‘Italian Recipe’ to Open Udine Asian Film Festival
Image
The Far East Film Festival in Italy’s Udine has set Chinese-Italian co-production “The Italian Recipe” as the opening title of a revived, largely in-person event.

The film, directed by Hou Zuxin, sees an unexpected series of events bring together a Chinese reality TV show contestant and a woman already resident in Italy. The collision of personalities, connections and chemistry between stars Liu Xun and Yao Huang resemble those of “Roman Holiday,” festival organizers suggest. The film has its world premier on Friday next week, launching a nine-day event that runs until April 22-30.

The 2022 selection runs to 72 titles, selected from over 400 submissions, numbers that organizers say, is proof that Asian filmmaking was not halted by the Covid-19 pandemic. “The fear, not unreasonable, given all the halted productions, dismantled sets and release dates announced and then postponed for months, that there wouldn’t be many films to choose from was...

‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Hits $60 Million in Korea, Heading Box Office for Sixth Consecutive Weekend
Image
“Spider-Man: No Way Home” was gifted a sixth successive victory at the South Korean box office in a weekend with no releases of commercially significant films.

“Spider-Man” played out to a lowball $1.23 million haul between Friday and Sunday. That was only 18% down on its previous weekend score and lifted its running total since release on Dec. 15, 2021, to $60.3 million.

It also kept a substantial lead over its rivals, with a 28% market share, ahead of “Sing 2” in second place with a score of $863,000 and a market share of 20%.

The aggregate nationwide box office for the weekend, however, fell deeper into the doldrums. It slipped from $5.99 million to $4.34 million.

Korean title “Special Delivery” earned $744,000 in third place, down from its $1.33 million opening a week earlier. After two weekends, it has accumulated $3.20 million.

Another Korean-made hopeful, “The Policeman’s Lineage” held on to fourth place with $492,000 in its third weekend. Since releasing on Jan.

Korea Box Office: ‘Spider-Man’ Holds Off ‘Special Delivery’
Image
“Spider-Man: No Way Home” remained on top of the South Korean box office for the fifth consecutive weekend. New releases of local titles failed to make a breakthrough.

“Spider-Man,” which finished 2021 as the top film of the year, continued its dominant run with$1.48 million over the latest weekend, according to data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic). That gave it a 25% market share and expanded its cumulative total since Dec. 15, 2021 to $58.2 million.

Korean crime-action film “Special Delivery” came in second with a $1.33 million weekend and $1.88 million over its five opening days. It was given 992 screens, still shy of the 1,100 that “Spider-Man” is playing on.

“Sing 2” held steady in third place with $1.07 million in its second weekend, giving it a 12-day cumulative of $3.85 million.

“A Policeman’s Lineage,” another Korean crime title that launched on Jan. 5, slipped from second place to fourth. Its second...
