2008-2012 was a great yet frustrating era to be a fan of Marvel cartoons. That brief period of time saw the premiere of some of the very best television that's ever adapted Marvel Comics: "The Spectacular Spider-Man," "Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes," and "Wolverine and the X-Men." I both blame and cherish these shows for making me a true Marvel Comics fan.
Yet, all these truly marvelous shows concluded prematurely for infuriating bureaucratic reasons. "Spectacular Spider-Man" ended when Sony ceded some Spider-Man television rights back to Marvel. Meanwhile, "Earth's Mightiest Heroes" was canned to make way for the far inferior (and Marvel Cinematic Universe-synergistic) "Avengers Assemble." Lastly, "Wolverine and the X-Men" never made it to season 2 because the show's financing fell apart.
Series writer-producer Joshua Fine confirmed as much in a 2011 interview. Even worse, season 2 was already in production; it had a season outline,...

While writing "Invincible," Robert Kirkman wears his love for other superhero comics on his sleeves. As you read or watch "Invincible," you can tell Kirkman is getting his desire to write Spider-Man out of his system; Mark Grayson is one of the best portrayals of Peter Parker, with similar strengths and flaws.
Most of the other major heroes and villains in "Invincible" have Marvel/DC counterparts, too. Mark's girlfriend Atom Eve is Mary Jane Watson but with superpowers. Cecil Stedman is Nick Fury, just with a scarred cheek instead of an eyepatch. The original Guardians of the Globe are the Justice League, to a member: Darkwing is Batman, War Woman is Wonder Woman, and Red Rush is Flash. That's why it's so harrowing when Omni-Man brutally kills the Guardians. There's only one survivor, the Immortal, who lives up to his name and regenerates. But which hero is the Immortal based on?...

Captain America: Brave New World star Carl Lumbly isn't sure what his Marvel Cinematic Universe future holds after the Phase Five blockbuster. However, if the opportunity presents itself, the acclaimed actor admits he's open to featuring in the rival DC Universe.
Speaking with Collider, Lumbly, who portrays supersoldier and Korean War veteran Isaiah Bradley in Brave New World, expressed his interest in doing a potential Dcu project after finding out his long-time collaborator, Mike Flanagan, was given the go-ahead to write his upcoming horror-tragedy film, Clayface. Not only would the prospect of working with Flanagan attract Lumbly to the Dcu, but his experience portraying comic book characters over the years makes him an ideal fit for James Gunn and Peter Safran's cinematic universe.

It's no secret that Hollywood has placed a lot of value on nostalgia in the past few years. For the past five years especially, it seems like every day, a film or TV franchise has announced a reboot, revival, spin-off, or sequel. While reboots are an easy way to draw in an established audience, often, they fail to live up to studio expectations.
Despite the large number of reboots and revivals released in the last few years, very few of them managed to maintain their built-in audience. Most of these reboots have ended up being canceled within two years of their premiere. While these reboots probably did not gain the large viewership the studio had expected, it is a shame that they are not given a chance to build an audience, like their original series were.

In Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, Hudson Thames' Peter Parker is immediately thrust into a cosmic battle that destroys Midtown High School. This opening scene reminds Peter and his friends that New York will always be in danger.
This occurs before Peter attains his powers. It shapes a human arc, showcasing Peter's bravery. Upon further analysis, there is a deep, subtle cut that could pave the way for Spider-Man's darkest storyline. It could even pop up earlier than expected, but if this subversion is done well, it will create a lot more resonance with its target audience: teenagers.

The DC brand has seemingly struggled with its live-action department, especially in terms of the now-defunct Dceu. But on the animation front, it has been a very different story. Bruce Timm, who spearheaded the Dcau, starting with the ’90s Batman: The Animated Series, also contributed to the creation of Justice League Unlimited.

"Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man" has now debuted on Disney+ and put an animated Spider-Man back on screens everywhere. I hope that the show is entertaining young Spidey fans the same way that the 1994 "Spider-Man" animated series and "Spectacular Spider-Man" did for my younger self. Developed by "Gargoyles" creator Greg Weisman, "Spectacular Spider-Man" ran for two seasons (26 episodes) from 2008 to 2009. Unfortunately, the truly spectacular cartoon ended prematurely due to Sony forfeiting animation rights to Spider-Man back to Marvel.
"Spectacular Spider-Man" remains a fan-favorite, for it's the perfect distillation of the character. It essentially updated the original Lee/Ditko comics for the present day, with the added foresight of being able to weave together the canonical Spider-Man stories and supporting characters from the very beginning, rather than through decades of trial and error, and countless different writers and artists. For example, Gwen Stacy and Harry Osborn debuted in "Amazing Spider-Man" #31, but they...

Lacey Chabert has an estimated net worth that’s a little lower than what some might expect.
Even though the acting veteran is a pillar of Hallmark projects, there was a time when higher ups tried to push out “old talent” — and branded her as such.
Perhaps that lack of appreciation by those in charge is why she hasn’t reaped the full rewards of her years of work.
Fortunately, this seems to be changing with a slew of new projects. It’s no more than she deserves.

It's no secret that Robert Downey Jr. has made huge bags of cash at the box office. The actor is considered to be the foundation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having starred in the monopolistic franchise's first official film, Iron Man, back in 2008. Since then, Downey Jr. has appeared in multiple MCU movies, including two Iron Man sequels, Captain America: Civil War, and every Avengers movie - including Avengers: Endgame, the second highest-grossing movie of all-time. That's some serious cash, and those films, plus two Sherlock Holmes movies with Guy Ritchie, Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, and the timeless comedy, Tropic Thunder, made the MCU vet the fifth highest-grossing actor of all-time. But Robert Downey Jr. has just been dethroned by an unsuspecting star... Alan Tudyk.

One of Stan Lee's many innovations as Marvel Comics editor-in-chief was setting the publisher's superhero stories in the real-world location of New York City. That greater sense of reality and interconnectivity within the comics helped create a sense of community among the fans (which Lee purposefully cultivated). You can track the trend of creators and fans trying to fit superheroes into the "real world" back to Lee's marvelous NYC. Compare this to the older heroes of DC Comics, who had their adventures in places like Gotham City, Star City, etc. These characters had made up homes because they were so obviously figures who could never exist in our world; writing a superhero comic is like telling a fairy tale.
Note how Superman's home, Metropolis, is literally named for the word meaning "large city." But again, a lot of comic fans really like to know where the fabulistic cities of DC are,...

Disney has been receiving huge backlash for their alleged race-swapping of multiple legacy characters in their latest offerings. The studio has made multiple controversial decisions about the casting of some of its classic characters, trying to make them more, for lack of a better term, “woke-friendly”. However, this has not gone down well with a section of its fans.
The latest controversy is the look of Harry Osborn in the upcoming Disney+ series Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. The animated series sees Peter Parker in his high school days trying to manage his academics and vigilantism. Fans have taken issue with Harry’s look, who seems to be race-swapped and is voiced by Zeno Robinson.

Get ready to go from calling him "my man" to The Main Man as Jason Momoa returns to the DC Universe, but not as Aquaman. Jason Momoa is set to take on the role of Lobo, an intergalactic bounty hunter in DC Comics for James Gunn's Dcu. This news probably isn't surprising to many fans, as Momoa had been rumored for the role of Lobo in the Dcu since James Gunn and Peter Safran were announced as the new heads of the Dcu – they even hinted at it during the press tour for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
Deadline reports that Jason Momoa is set to play the DC anti-hero Lobo in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Momoa previously played Arthur Curry/Aquaman in the Dceu, appearing in Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Justice League, Aquaman, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, with cameo roles in The Flash and Peacemaker.

The first trailer for James Gunn's "Superman" is here, but more heroes than David Corenswet's Man of Steel appear. After all, this movie is launching the new silver screen DC Universe. We'd known from previous casting news which heroes would be appearing in "Superman," and the trailer showed some of them in costume. Among them is Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, one of the many heroes named Green Lantern.
Fillion is a friend of director James Gunn who often appears in his movies. No surprise the actor has a supporting part in "Superman," but Fillion as a Green Lantern is a casting choice that has a lot of history.
In the early 2000s, Nathan Fillion was a popular choice to play Hal Jordan in a "Green Lantern" film; with people even making fanmade trailers with Fillion in the role.

Unless you've been living under a lead-lined rock for the past couple of years, you probably have heard that James Gunn (of Guardians of the Galaxy fame) has taken the reins of DC's new slate of films, resulting in the birth of the Dcu. And honestly, it couldn't have come at a better time for the struggling franchise. Between the lackluster final few entries of Dceu and even the shelving of nearly completed films, it was time for a fresh start.
Now, James Gunn plans on creating a shared universe that will seamlessly blend DC's cinematic, television, animated, and gaming divisions under one well-orchestrated umbrella. The first phase of this plan is the much spoken of "Gods and Monsters," which will boast five feature films alongside six television series. It's an ambitious first step and one that Gunn feels confident he can pull off after being inspired by the Dcau...

Netflix’s “Hot Frosty” has become a bit of a sensation since it debuted on the streamer in early November, topping the Netflix charts, going viral and even getting a Ryan Reynolds parody, thanks to its bonkers Christmas charm — and the charms of its leading actress, Lacey Chabert.
Best known for playing the iconic and “so fetch” Gretchen Wieners in “Mean Girls,” Chabert’s previous credits also include “Party of Five,” “Lost in Space,” voice roles in “The Wild Thornberrys” and “Young Justice,” and earning the title “Queen of Hallmark” for the 30+ Hallmark movies she’s made over the years.
What’s more, Chabert has become a holiday staple, so if you’re looking for more Lacey Chabert Christmas movies to watch after “Hot Frosty,” there are plenty to choose from. Some might say a daunting amount if you’re a Hallmark newbie — not to worry, we’ve gone through...

Had The CW not decided to move away from scripted programming, who knows how long Superman & Lois might have run for? Of course, with DC Studios launching a shared Dcu across film and television and Superman on the way next summer, the show's days were always numbered.
Ultimately, we're just lucky that Superman & Lois is getting a fourth and final season but a glimpse at what might have been has now been revealed courtesy of the upcoming Superman: The Definitive History book from Insight Editions.

As ComicBookMovie.com commenter @NinnesMBC pointed out, "Jordan's costume is inspired and borrowed from Kon-El/Conner's The New 52 version and Jon's is based from the combination of the leather jacket and the suit beneath it that Kon-El/Conner wore many years back in the clone's...

Getting interviewed by Tom Cavanagh was a delight for Superman & Lois' Lex Luthor.
"He's not only a cast favorite but also a crew favorite, and he was wonderful to have on set," actor Michael Cudlitz told TVLine after The Flash star cameoed as talk show host Gordon Godfrey, setting up Lex's on-camera showdown with Lois Lane as part of his revenge scheme. Cudlitz also described Cavanagh as "a lot of fun, he has a lot of energy, he's incredibly creative, and he's not afraid to throw out everything he's done and come up with something new. He's also incredibly supportive, so I was grateful to have him on set. Hes a hoot."

The following contains spoilers for The Penguin, Episode 8, "A Great or Little Thing," now streaming on Max.
By the end of The Penguin, Colin Farrell's Oswald "Oz" Cobb ends up getting the criminal empire he always clamored for. He takes down the Maroni and Falcone crime families along the way. In addition, he unites the Triads and other gangs after getting them to kill their leaders.
It places him in a position of power that supersedes the Bliss drugs he ran from below the tunnels of Gotham. He did most of this in Crown Point, where Rhenzy Feliz's Victor Aguilar lived. By the season finale, this particular angle opens the door for the introduction of the best DC Robin: Tim Drake.

Quick Links Who Is DC's Gordon Godfrey? What Does Tom Cavanagh's Godfrey Do in Superman & Lois?
The following contains spoilers from Superman & Lois, Season 4, Episode 8, "Sharp Dressed Man."
When it comes to Superman & Lois' fourth and final season, there are some interesting players added to the mix. It's a truncated season that has seen regulars reduced to guest roles, or in the case of Dylan Walsh's General Sam Lane, killed off. But there are fresh faces involved to add depth to the story.
One new face is Douglas Smith's Jimmy Olsen, Superman's "Best Pal" in a key arc that plays into Clark Kent's history at the Daily Planet. Another big appearance now occurs thanks to an Arrowverse alumni. This is none other than Tom Cavanagh, who shocks fans as he suits up as a new version of Gordon Godfrey.

The following contains spoilers from Superman & Lois, Season 4, Episode 8, "Sharp Dressed Man."
The Flash alum Tom Cavanagh made his DC return in Monday night's episode of Superman & Lois, although it wasn't as the Reverse-Flash. Instead, the fan-favorite actor portrayed a Jack Kirby-created DC Comics character who first appeared in the 1970s.
In "Sharp Dressed Man," the eighth episode of Superman & Lois' fourth and final season, Cavanagh appears as talk show host Gordon Godfrey. The character is based on the New God Glorious Godfrey, who first appeared in The Forever People #3 in 1971 and is intended to embody the type of powerful, charismatic speaker who can talk people into justifying violence and evil. Gordon Godfrey is a pretty obscure pull for Superman & Lois, as the character hasn't been adapted much, appearing only in the series Justice League, Smallville, and Young Justice, as well as the 2019 DC Animated Movie Universe movie,...

The Penguin wrapped up its eight-episode run on HBO on November 10, 2024, to critical acclaim and positive fan reactions. It stands in sharp contrast to the other Batman villain spin-off of 2024, Joker: Folie Deux, which opened in theaters between the second and third episodes of The Penguin. Joker: Folie Deux is nothing short of a disappointment, earning an abysmal 32% on Rotten Tomatoes from audiences and critics alike. Meanwhile, it has grossed only $58 million domestically, which the 2019 Joker surpassed in its opening weekend. At the beginning of 2024, nobody would have guessed that a series based on The Penguin would surpass The Joker, Batman's most famous enemy, but here we are.
Joker and Penguin are two of Batman's oldest and most formidable foes. The Joker debuted in Batman #1 in April 1940, with The Penguin debuting the following year in Detective Comics #58 in December 1941. While the Penguin has remained one of the core Batman foes,...

It's not an overstatement to say Young Justice is among the best and most revered animated series of the new millennium and possibly the best DC animated project since Batman: The Animated Series. The show follows a group of young heroes and sidekicks who form a covert group, simply named The Team, to handle delicate missions the more formal and by-the-book Justice League can't handle.

The time skip between seasons 1 and 2 of Young Justice can be quite impenetrable to new viewers, as retroactively figuring out what happened during this time is no easy task. After a strong season 1, Young Justice made the controversial decision to skip ahead in time by five years, going from New Year's Eve on 2011 to 2016 at the start of season 2. While reasons behind Young Justice's season 2 time skip may have been sound, the series would go on to never make such a dramatic leap forward in chronology ever again, and for good reason.
There is a lot about the five years between seasons 1 and 2 of Young Justice that is only slowly addressed in time over the course of the second season, retroactively explained via flashback or exposition. Some events in this time period are also unique to tie-in material, such as comics or the video game Young Justice: Legacy. Between political developments,...

We've all been there. We're so heavily invested in a TV show that we look forward to new episodes each and every week (or on one specific day each year in this new modern era of streaming shows), falling in love with the characters and the stories that are told. And then, without warning, it is cancelled by the network, bringing about a premature ending to its run.
It's not a good feeling as it robs a good show of fulfilling its true potential. Most of the times, it's little-shows-that-could that get axed before they ever get the chance to evolve into something bigger, but occasionally there are some high-profile cancellations that come out of absolutely nowhere and are often down to reasons beyond ratings. Some even spawn revival campaigns and some are even successful.
Nevertheless, as constant and annoying as the cancellation of your favorite TV show is, it continues to happen each year.

Chris Mundy will be showrunner and he’s set to co-write the series with fellow executive producers Damon Lindelof and Tom King.
“We’re thrilled to bring this seminal DC title to HBO with Chris, Damon and Tom at the helm,” DC Studios co-chairmen and co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran said in a joint statement. “John Stewart and Hal Jordan are two of DC’s most compelling characters,...

Remember when we thought we were going to get a Deathstroke film set in the DC Extended Universe? Good times.
Well, even though that didn't happen, Slade Wilson could be coming to James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Universe, according to The Hollywood Reporter, as the character is set to co-headline his own DC movie, along with none other than fellow Batman villain Bane. And fans of the anti-hero couldn’t be happier.
We've waited years to see Slade Wilson, a.k.a. Deathstroke, properly represented in a solo film. Back when the live-action universe was still the Dceu, fans thought they’d finally get a taste when Joe Manganiello suited up as Deathstroke in the post-credit scene of Justice League. You know, the one where the movie was "average at best," and we all left feeling like we deserved more. Manganiello looked like he was plucked right from the pages of DC comics,...

Every Batman animated series explores a different side of the character, and some of the best Batman stories have been told in animation form. Over the years, Batman has been front and center in ten solo animated series from 1968 to 2014. This does not include other DC animated shows Batman was part of, such as Justice League or Young Justice. With the release of a new Batman series in 2024, animated productions still represent a huge part of the Dark Knights legacy.
Batman has been DC Comics flagship character for a while now, which is why the Caped Crusader has starred in more animated series than any other DC hero. That is not to mention the several DC Animated Universe movies that have featured Batman in some capacity. Here is every Batman animated show, ranked from worst to best.

Opinions on DC Comics' live-action films and television shows might vary, but the heroes of the DC Universe thrive best in animation. Plenty of shows, including Young Justice and Batman: Caped Crusader, have cultivated loyal fanbases. At the same time, Warner Bros. has steadily put out a series of direct-to-dvd animated movies adapting DC storylines. The latest series of films is often referred to as the "Tomorrowverse" due to the fact that they exist in a shared universe and that the first film that kicked off this project was Superman: Man of Tomorrow. The Tomorrowverse was rather short-lived, though, lasting only for a few years and ten films in total. What led to this brief run, especially compared to other DC movies?...

If you're a fan of DC Comics, the past few years have probably been pretty tough for you. A merger at Warner Bros. led to the cancellation of a slew of movies and TV shows set within their cinematic universe, and new owners at The CW also resulted in the cancellations of multiple DC TV shows that had been dominating the network for the past decade.
Yeah, it's been rough out here for DC fans. The good news is that a new DC Universe is coming from Peter Safran and James Gunn, but it's going to take some time before it comes to fruition (animated series Creature Commandos is debuting in December and Gunn's own Superman movie doesn't come out until next year). That means there will still be a prolonged period of time without much DC TV content on our screens - unthinkable this time just three years ago.

Well, no one can accuse DC films of making boring choices anymore. James Gunn, co-president of DC Studios with Peter Safran and director of the upcoming David Corenswet-led "Superman" film, shared news of the latest DC project on X (it's still Twitter to us). What is this project? "Dynamic Duo," but it's not a Batman picture. No, this will star the first two Robins. Per James Gunn, "Over the moon excited to announce the newest DC Studios/Warner Bros Pictures Animation greenlit film for theaters, 'Dynamic Duo,' the story of Robin ... or should I say, Robins, as in Dick Grayson and Jason Todd." DC is partnering with New Orleans-based puppetry/animation studio Swaybox as part of the company's first feature. Check out Swaybox's medium-blending reel below:

"Batman: The Animated Series" wound up being as definitive an account of the Dark Knight as its title suggested. So when a new Batman cartoon finally came afterwards, it was destined to never escape the shadow of "Btas." But "The Batman" (which aired from 2004 to 2008) made a noble effort and remains one of the more unique spins on the Caped Crusader.
"The Batman," developed by Michael Goguen and Duane Capizzi, was the first animated Batman in 12 years that was unconnected to the DC Animated Universe (The shared setting that began with "Batman: The Animated Series" and concluded with "Justice League Unlimited").
Bruce Wayne in "The Batman" was voiced by Rino Romano, and Joker by Kevin Michael Richardson, rather than the beloved Kevin Conroy as Batman and Mark Hamill as the Joker duo. Bruce Timm modeled "Batman: The Animated Series" on the Fleischer Studios Superman cartoons, while Jeff Matsuda gave Gotham City an anime makeover.

If you're even a little bit familiar with "The Big Bang Theory," you know that it's always been sold as a "show about nerds" — so it makes sense that it featured a whole bunch of actors who also appeared in the "Star Trek" franchise.
Chuck Lorre's hit sitcom, which ran for 12 seasons and stars Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, Simon Helberg, Kunal Nayyar, Kaley Cuoco, Melissa Rauch, and Mayim Bialik — who play Sheldon Cooper, Leonard Hofstadter, Howard Wolowitz, Raj Koothrappali, Penny Hofstadter, Bernadette Rostenkowski-Wolowitz, and Amy Farrah Fowler, respectively — featured many, many cameos from pop culture icons, including the late James Earl Jones, Stephen Hawking, and even Marvel Comics legend Stan Lee. Throughout those 12 seasons, a lot of "Star Trek" veterans also showed up in cameo roles. So, who were they, and what did these "Star Trek" actors do during their appearances on "The Big Bang Theory?"
