Brian Trenchard-Smith has, by his own estimation, directed "42 crimes against cinema"... which brings us to his latest filmmaking infraction, Drive Hard starring John Cusack and Thomas Jane.

From Rlj/Image Entertainment, Drive Hard will be available via VOD this week on September 4 and in theaters and on iTunes on October 3.

The action/adventure film was written by Brian along with Chad Law, Evan Law and Brigitte Jean Allen. Here's a synopsis:

With a heist in mind, a mysterious American called Keller (Cusack) arrives in Brisbane needing a getaway driver. Rather than recruit one from the local underworld, he tricks a driving school instructor, Roberts (Jane) into taking the wheel.

Keller chose well, Roberts just happens to be a washed out Formula-One driver. Chased by the cops and the mob, Roberts is forced to use his racing skills to evade pursuit on a Hard Drive that takes the two along the Gold Coast of Australia.

Former THINKFilm executives David Hudakoc and Michael Baker have launched the Toronto-based distributor, one of several new players that are expected to arrive in the wake of the eOne-Alliance merger.

The goal is for levelFilm to release 10-12 “quality independent films” a years starting with Chen Kaige’s Caught In The Web.

The plan will balance platform theatrical releases with day-and-date digital.

Baker [pictured at right] and Hudakoc [pictured at left] will handle acquisitions together while Baker will oversee content development and Hudakoc will supervise distribution and marketing.

Caught In The Web will open in New York, Los Angeles and Toronto in October and expand into 15-20 major markets.

The contemporary ensemble drama centres on the story of a young woman with a terminal illness who becomes the victim of a viral internet campaign after she is caught on video mistreating an elderly bus passenger.

Christian Slater has been trying to find a foothold in the business again, as the last few years have seen the once-popular leading man trying (but ultimately failing) to launch comeback vehicles on both the big and small screens. From canceled TV shows like My Own Worst Enemy and Breaking In, to B-movie fare like Playback or Sacrifice, Slater has hung in there, if only for brief moments.

Well, Assassin’s Bullet isn’t likely to be the film that resurrects Christian Slater as a headlining actor, but it should be a bit of fun for ardent fans of the espionage/thriller sub-genre. Scroll down for a new poster and details about the film.

Dimension Films, the genre movie division of The Weinstein Company, has picked up the U.S. distribution rights to director Jonathan Sobol's (Everything is Connected) latest movie, The Black Marks. The comedy, which will star Kurt Russell, Matt Dillon and Jay Baruchel, will go into production in Canada later this month. Nicholas Tabarrok, who produced Sobol's last movie, A Beginner's Guide to Endings, is producing for Darius Films, with Jeff Sackman (Sacrifice) executive producing.

Eva Longoria is looking for the truth beyond Wisteria Lane. The “Desperate Housewives” star will join the cast of the action thriller “The Truth.” The cast already includes Andy Garcia, Forest Whitaker, Kim Coates and Deborah Kara Unger, Kevin Durand, Devon Bostick, Lara Daans and Steven Bauer. Actors Andy Garcia, Forest Whitaker, Eva Longoria, Kim Coates, and Deborah Kara Unger have joined The Truth.

The story centers on Andy Garcia's character, an ex-cia agent who became a political talk show host after retiring as a spy. He is hired by a whistleblower to help expose her company's hand in a South American village massacre. Kevin Durand, Devon Bostick, Lara Daans, and Steven Bauer also star in unspecified roles.

Damian Lee (Sacrifice) will direct The Truth from his own original screenplay. Gary Howsam and Bill Marks will produce, with Andy Garcia, Kim Coates, and Jeff Sackman executive producing.

Production is scheduled to start later this month, with shooting to take place in Ontario and the Dominican Republic.

The Truth comes to theaters in 2012 and stars Andy Garcia, Forest Whitaker, Eva Longoria, Kim Coates, Deborah Kara Unger, Kevin Durand, Devon Bostick, Lara Daans. The film is directed by Damian Lee.

After all this comedy's drama, "Breaking In" has snuck back onto the television schedule once again.

The Christian Slater-starring comedy about a group of young employees working at a digital security firm is getting a mid-season order of 13 episodes from Fox, Deadline reports. It was a late season addition to the schedule last season, and despite testing well, performed poorly in the ratings. It was assumed that the show was dead after airing seven episodes, which almost din't run themselves after being passed over the season before.

This marks, finally, a semi-success for Slater's recent television career; his past two shows, "The Forgotten" and "My Own Worst Enemy," were cancelled after one season. It also comes amidst a personal renaissance for the actor, who has been sober for half a decade now; he's involved in sixteen movies over this year and next, according to IMDb.com. Drugs are bad. That much has been known to us since we were in the 6th Grade thanks to the D.A.R.E. program, but did it work? Drugs are one of the top imports here in America, lovingly retold to us in these heavy-handed title cards that open Sacrifice. We’re all high. We’re all dumb. If all of these types of stories are to believed, then there’s no end to this trade, no matter what your After School Special told you, the only thing more corrupt than drugs is oil. Luckily, we have Cuba Gooding, Jr. ready to single-handedly stop it all.

So the cover to Sacrifice is typical of Cuba Gooding Dtv movies: concerned expression with gun in hand. La-dee-da. But if you give it another second, Sacrifice ain’t all that bad, given the circumstances. No, it’s no Traffic, but...

If you’re one of the few individuals who suffered through director Tibor Takács’ excruciatingly painful 2009 effort “Lies and Illusions”, then I’m sure you’re wondering, “Why in the hell would I even be remotely interested in watching yet another direct-to-video thriller starring Cuba Gooding Jr. and Christian Slater?” To be perfectly honest, I can’t blame you. “Lies and Illusions” was a particularly awful Stv suspense yarn, even by Cuba’s lowly standards. And while I can’t say that writer/director Damian Lee’s 2011 action/drama “Sacrifice” is any worse than the pair’s previous endeavor, it’s certainly not any stronger. Although Slater has been involved in much better productions as of late, this is pretty much par for the course for Mr. Gooding, whose cinematic stock just seems to keep plummeting deeper and deeper into the mire. It's an absolute wasteland out there on store shelves this week, as studios are offering virtually no major releases to speak of and instead we are left to sort through a pile of pathetic-looking direct-to-dvd titles. Believe it or not, South Park: Season 14 is probably the only high profile release out today, but if that's not your bag, you can always check out Sniper: Reloaded starring Billy Zane, Blood Out starring Val Kilmer and 50 Cent, or Sacrifice starring Cuba Gooding Jr. and Christian Slater! A couple of potential hidden gems include British comedy Bunny and the Bull from the makers of The Mighty Boosh and the lottery winner doc Lucky from director Jeffrey Blitz (Spellbound). Fortunately, Criterion also has Brian De Palma's Blow Out and Terry Gilliam's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas on Blu, while Anchor Bay is releasing high-def versions of Alejandro Jodorowsky's The Holy Mountain and El Topo.

Not many titles to announce on Blu-Ray/DVD this week. Sacrifice is the only film hitting the home market today.

Sacrifice starring Cuba Gooding Jr. and Christian Slater will be hitting store shelves on DVD, Blu-ray and also digital download on April 26th. I've seen this movie already and it's actually pretty good, just picture Cuba Gooding Jr. as a bad-ass, revenge set guy with excellent marksmanship and then you have Slater (Rip) who actually is in the role of a do gooder priest! On April 26th, Millennium Entertainment is releasing the action thriller Sacrifice, directed by Damian Lee and starring Christian Slater (now in the TV series Breaking In) and Cuba Gooding Jr. (now starring in...well, not much since 2009, but his schedule for 2011 is quite full). Kim Coates and Devon Bostick are also starring, but the interesting part is Slater and Cuba: it's been a long time since the two commanded lead performance charisma and it'll be especially interesting to see how Cuba fares after his year-long hiatus.

They just released a few images from the flick to whet your appetite and you can catch those, a plot synopsis, the cover art, and a trailer after the jump.

On an almost daily basis, I take time to wonder about Cuba Gooding Jr. Where he went after winning his Oscar, why we don’t see more of him, whether he’ll have another catch phrase. Those sorts of things. Fortunately, we got our hands on some exclusive images from his forthcoming, direct-to-dvd movie, Sacrifice. The story focuses on a beat down cop, a giant religious icon made of drugs, and the very bad people that want it back. Direct-to-dvd has a bad reputation, but we here at Fsr have been its champion from time to time because there are some truly great movies that never see screens. Cuba Gooding Jr. does a lot of direct-to-dvd action/crime movies lately, which is surprising given that it’s only been four years since his last major Hollywood role in Ridley Scott’s “American Gangster”. I couldn’t tell you if this is because he’s just not getting A-list offers anymore, or if he’s just decided he needs the cash and is accepting any and all gigs that come his way.
