Title is derived from the second volume of the memoirs of David Niven. He told a story that Casablanca (1942) director Michael Curtiz, whose English was less than perfect, was directing a scene in a Western in which a group of riderless horses were needed on camera. Curtiz shouted, "Bring on the empty horses!" Niven remembered the phrase and used it for his book.
