Certain movie directors — Hitchcock and Tarantino come to mind — constitute a genre unto themselves. Steven Soderbergh was never like that, at least not until he started making his “little” films: the cleverly plotted low-budget indie palate cleansers that he got into the habit of directing in between his more deluxe features. He did it as a way to recharge his batteries, and to remind himself that moviemaking is supposed to be fun.
You could say that Soderbergh’s first official “little” film was “Full Frontal” (2002), an all-star Hollywood satire made for $2 million, or you could say that it was “Bubble” (2005), a Middle American existential crime drama that also happened to be the first day-and-date release. In a way, though, the original Soderbergh “little” film was “Schizopolis,” the aggro experimental doodle he made all by himself and released in 1996, as a way to clear his pipes after what he characterized as...

The Action Scene explores the form, history, and visceral power of action cinema through its set pieces.Haywire.Violence erupts in a sleepy Upstate New York diner at the start of Steven Soderbergh’s Haywire (2011). Seated in the back, Mallory Kane (Gina Carano) is joined by her hungover, bleary-eyed associate Aaron (Channing Tatum), who has been sent to pick her up. She refuses to budge. As Aaron is served his coffee, the camera peers at them from a few yards away, peeking around the counter at knee height, like an eavesdropping waitress wiping up spilled food. He feigns a sip, then abruptly pitches the cup’s scalding contents at Mallory. She clutches her face in pain, but no reaction shot follows: the camera retains its distant vantage on the pair, off-center in the frame, as if it, too, hasn’t fully processed this jolting disruption of a banal scene.Aaron...

In Bubble & Squeak, Evan Twohy introduces audiences to Declan (Himesh Patel) and Delores (Sarah Goldberg), a married couple experiencing a chaotic honeymoon in an unnamed Eastern European country. Their unconventional travel choices lead to a comedic crisis when they get detained for smuggling cabbages—a crime with severe repercussions in this strange setting.
The situation becomes more outlandish upon discovering Delores has hidden a massive number of vegetables in her pants, which serves as a turning point for their story. As the couple encounters increasingly weird scenarios—including a rough customs officer and a cabbage smuggler dressed as a bear—their experiences expose underlying tensions in their relationship.
The film sits within absurdist comedy, blending social commentary with unexpected humor. Its debut at the Sundance Film Festival highlights a current cinematic trend exploring unconventional narratives that challenge perceptions of normalcy and marriage. Some words are just funnier than others. That’s why, for a deft bit of physical zaniness involving a spork in the mostly droll comedy Bubble & Squeak to work, one of the characters needs to say the word “spork.” It earned my laughter, but that moment is also potentially an acknowledgment that much of what precedes it in writer-director Evan Twohy’s film hinges on the nearly incessant repetition of a much less innately funny word: cabbage. Twohy gets a lot of mileage out of that word, and the contrast of its blandness with the furious emotions attached to it, but not quite enough to power the entire film.
Bubble & Squeak opens in a grim government office. Honeymooning American newlyweds Declan (Himesh Patel) and Delores (Sarah Goldberg) are being interrogated by Bkofl (Stephen Yeun), a border guard who seems at first to be going through the motions. But...

Water is one of the most important substances in the universe. Without water, plants couldn't grow, and animals couldn't survive, meaning that an Earth without water would be massively different from the one we call home. Outside its importance, water can also be beautiful, from the terrifying majesty of the oceans to the calm serenity of raindrops running down a window pane after a night of heavy rain.
Due to these elements, creatives frequently use water in their works. Sometimes, water is used as a metaphor for life or the passage of time, while other creatives use water to give locations a specific atmosphere or to hint at a grander theme that runs through the work. Naturally, anime is no exception to this, as many series and movies feature memorably wet locations. But which is the best?

After a streak of Marvel movies and a critical flop, Gwyneth Paltrow is finally returning to the big screen with an upcoming A24 movie. Gwyneth Paltrow has enjoyed a successful movie career since her start in 1991. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, she stayed relatively busy, starring in popular movies such as Shakespeare in Love, The Talented Mr. Ripley, and The Royal Tenenbaums. In 2008, she pivoted to her first big franchise: Iron Man. From there, most of Paltrow's career has been dedicated to portraying Pepper Potts that is, until now.
Notably, Paltrow has been largely absent from Hollywood since the 2010s. From 2014 to 2019, she starred in only one film per year, except a few documentaries. Likely, this is because Paltrow was focused on growing her wellness and lifestyle company, Goop. Regardless, audiences have seen much less of Paltrow, and more importantly, less of the actress in new and unique roles. Though...

Steven Soderbergh is taking a page from Taylor Swift’s playbook.
“People laugh that there is a college class being taught about her and I go, ‘There should be,'” the director tells Variety during a roundtable interview at Karlovy Vary Film Festival. “What she is doing, the way she is doing it… Nobody has ever done this before. The amount of control she has taken over. She is relentless.”
He continues, “These stories about doing the whole show on a treadmill, just to make sure she can do it?! It’s a success story and I am fascinated by that. [Screenwriter] David Koepp took his daughter to see the show and said, ‘You cannot believe what it’s like to be there.’ I would go if I could. There aren’t any tickets! But I watched the film.”
The Eras Tour is also on his mind when developing new work.

Anime is an incredible storytelling medium where it often feels as if anything is possible. Ongoing anime series can reach incredible heights through episodic and serialized narratives. However, theres a whole other pedigree of talent thats featured in the anime cinematic spectacles that grace movie theaters and streaming services. Anime movies often benefit from a greater budget and a lengthier production schedule that allows these stories to excel in ways that would otherwise be impossible in anime TV series.
Some of animes greatest triumphs are feature films from the past that helped put the medium on the map, whether its Akira, Ghost in the Shell, or even Pokmon: The First Movie. These older anime movies are certainly magical, but recent cinematic accomplishments have left just as great of an impression on audiences. Its truly remarkable to see what modern anime feature films have been able to accomplish and there are...

Warning: Contains some spoilers for ‘Dot And Bubble’
For anyone who might’ve found last week’s folk horror-inflected episode of Doctor Who, ‘73 Yards’, a little too ambiguous, you’ll have no such quibbles with the series’ follow-up offering, ‘Dot And Bubble’. A candy-coloured cautionary tale about the perils of tech dependency and online echo chambers set in a world where everybody lives in literal social media bubbles, the fifth episode of Russell T. Davies’ Who reboot is about as subtle as a flatulent Slitheen. But unsubtle doesn’t necessarily mean ineffective, and despite the heavy-handedness of its opening throes, Davies’ Black Mirror-riffing latest eventually builds to a flooring sucker punch of a finale that would stop even Charlie Brooker in his tracks.
After the darkness of ‘Boom’ and the wintry chill of ‘73 Yards’, ‘Dot And Bubble’ sees Davies whisk viewers away to Finetime, a pastel-paletted, domed-in alien idyll populated by rich-kid human colonists.

Twist's character in "Dot and Bubble" hints at the possibility of her being a member of Doctor Who's Pantheon of Gods, with abilities to manipulate space and time.
Susan Twist's "Dot and Bubble" cameo finally sheds some light on her place in the Doctor Who universe, making it incredibly unlikely that two theories about the actress' true character are true. As a consistent member of the Doctor Who season 14 cast, Twist has been popping up throughout the Disney era, with very little to connect her various characters beyond them being portrayed by the same person. However, "Dot and...

Warning: spoilers ahead for Doctor Who season 14, episode 5, "Dot & Bubble"
The Fifteenth Doctor's reaction after Lindy and the other survivors refuse to be saved is his best Doctor Who scene so far. Gatwa's emotional scene in "Dot & Bubble" proves Doctor Who season 14 needs more of the Doctor. At least Gatwa's Doctor will still have room to grow in Doctor Who season 15.
Ncuti Gatwa's standout scene in "Dot & Bubble" shows Doctor Who season 14 what it's missing. Widely compared to an installment of Black Mirror, Russell T Davies' "Dot & Bubble" does not feel like a Doctor Who episode. Callie Cooke leads Doctor Who's cast as Lindy Pepper-Bean, and the premise is simple enough: the Doctor must remotely help the social media-obsessed citizens of Finetime escape an onslaught of flesh-eating bugs. He succeeds, more or less, but there's always a twist at the end.

The following contains major spoilers from Doctor Who Series 14, Episode 6, "Dot and Bubble," now streaming on Disney+.
Doctor Who Series 14, Episode 6, "Dot and Bubble" is emblematic of the genius of Russell T Davies. The reason why fans were so excited to have Davies back as showrunner is that he always knows what he's doing. Not just in the sense that he created the new Doctor Who that they all know and love, but that every story choice he makes is deliberate -- and usually designed to shock the audience. Even though viewers are aware that something's coming, Davies is always able to get one over on them.
"Dot and Bubble" is classic Davies in that sense. Audiences know that what starts out as a vapid, upbeat adventure for the guest character of Lindy Pepper-Bean (played by Wedding Season's Callie Cooke) won't stay that way. There's something menacing right around the corner.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Doctor Who season 14, episode 5, "Dot and Bubble."
Lindy's Homeworld likely met its end due to a sentient Dot AI going rogue, creating monsters to attack the moon's inhabitants. Finetime's residents learn discriminatory behavior from the Homeworld, leading to prejudiced views within the society. The Dot AI may have turned violent due to the assumption that a discriminatory society wouldn't accept a sentient machine.
When the fate of Lindy's homeworld is revealed in Doctor Who, season 14, episode 5, "Dot and Bubble," it's not clear how the population of the planet met its end, but the episode does provide certain clues throughout. The planet, only ever referred to as "The Homeworld," seems to be home to a variety of incredibly wealthy individuals. The community of Finetime is based on the planet's moon, but the Doctor and Ruby barely manage to guide a number of the Finetime residents to safety.

Warning: spoilers ahead for Doctor Who season 14, episode 5, "Dot & Bubble"
Lindy's racism towards the Fifteenth Doctor reveals a deeper prejudice within Finetime's society. The AI system turning on its users may have been triggered by the racial dynamics of Finetime. "Dot & Bubble" highlights themes of racism, social media, elitism, and AI dangers, but fails to fully connect them.
Lindy's escape comes to a shocking and upsetting conclusion in Doctor Who season 14, episode 5, "Dot & Bubble," leaving plenty to analyze and pick over as the end credits roll. Season 14's second Doctor-lite episode in a row, "Dot & Bubble" stars Callie Cooke as Lindy Pepper-Bean, a veritable brat who would make Veruca Salt cringe. Lindy lives on the colony of Finetime, populated exclusively by other brats connected by a sophisticated social media system. Said social media system gains sentience, realizes its users are brats, and begins picking them off in alphabetical order.

Spoilers below for both "Doctor Who" and "Black Mirror."
In a recent interview about the latest "Doctor Who" episode, showrunner Russell T. Davies teased that the show would "step into 'Black Mirror' territory." It turns out that Davies is a big fan of the dystopian anthology series and its creator, Charlie Brooker. But even as his latest episode took inspiration from the show, he promised it'd still have that "Doctor Who" spin:
"[Brooker's] immensely brilliant. But there's a little bit more freedom and 'Doctor Who' madness in 'Dot and Bubble'. There's a sense of fun. And monsters in the middle of it... So although it's 'Black Mirror'-like, it's more 'Doctor Who.' ['Dot and Bubble']'s got the bones and the blood of our favourite show."
Sure enough, the latest episode of season 14 is clearly based off of "Nosedive." That's a famous season 3 "Black Mirror" episode, centered...
