The characters of this week’s releases are at the end of their ropes. That might even be literal for Robert Redford’s character in All Is Lost unless sailors have a different word for “rope.” And they probably do. Some of the film figures of the week are covered in blood, some have been kidnapped into slavery, some have been falsely imprisoned, some are fighting the system, and some are losing the battle against it. Desperation seems like a common theme. Of course, it’s October, so “ghosts” are another big one. And who’s more desperate than they are? There’s also a lot more going on in a week with a massive amount of movies. Here’s your trailer-ized guide to what’s coming out: The Major Names 12 Years A Slave Read Our Review And our interview with Sarah Paulson Carrie Escape Plan The Fifth Estate Read our review All Is Lost Read our...

Like a teenaged C.C. Baxter, Brian (Michael Seater) loans his van out to his buddies for sex (to have in, not with), but he’s dying to lose his virginity and get in on the greasy fun. Luckily a popular guy named Tony (Bo Burnham) takes him under his wing, and things go completely off track in Adventures in the Sin Bin. I thought it might have been a hockey movie, too. From the looks of the trailer, it’s as charming and off-kilter as any coming-of-age sex comedy with the added benefit of Jeff Garlin, Tim Blake Nelson and Gillian Jacobs rounding out some roles. Plus, Burnham looks on fire here as a smarmy operator. Check it out for yourself: Adventures in the Sin Bin is the first feature from director Billy Federighi, and it hits theaters October 18th.

Young filmmakers often reference their heroes outright. This isn't a phenomenon exclusive to creatively wayward directors; look at the early films of genuine auteur Paul Thomas Anderson to see wholesale theft from Martin Scorsese and Robert Altman (to name a few). But when the references are a distraction to the point of actively taking away from the enjoyment of the movie, that's when things become a problem. And it's a problem that plagues the otherwise wonderful "Sin Bin," a charming little comedy about a high school kid (Michael Seater) who rents his beat-up van out to his fellow students for sexual liaisons, which owes such a stylistic debt to the films of Wes Anderson that it makes you think somewhat less of the movie. From the beginning, the movie seems to be tipping its hat to Anderson. Examples abound – the super-thick Futura bold font utilized for the title cards; the...

With cinematic releases at the moment mostly involving the not-particularly inspiring likes of "That's My Boy" and "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter," it's hard not to look to television for a little nourishment. The trouble is that the TV season has wrapped up for the year. While a few shows (namely "Girls") are still wrapping up, and others get underway shortly ("The Newsroom," "Breaking Bad," "Louie"), it's pretty quiet on the box, with cast and creatives focusing on making a hiatus movie, campaigning for Emmy, or just getting some sleep for once.
Still, with the 2011/2012 TV season done, we thought we'd shine a light on the small screen this week. Tomorrow, we're going to run down our ten favorite TV series of the last 12 months, but today, we wanted to pick a few stars of these shows that we think are set to break out as movie stars before too long,...

HollywoodNews.com: The 38th Seattle International Film Festival, the largest and most highly-attended event of its kind in the United States concluded today with the announcement of the Siff 2012 Competition Awards and Golden Space Needle Audience Awards. The 25-day Festival, which began May 17, featured over 460 films from more than 70 countries, including 65 feature premieres (24 World, 25 North American, 16 U.S.) and over 700 screenings. Additionally, Siff brought in more than 300 directors, actors and industry professionals.
“A festival’s success is dependent on two basic principles: providing a platform for filmmakers to be celebrated and connecting them to audience members that would not otherwise be aware of their remarkable stories,” said Siff Artistic Director Carl Spence. “This year a record number of filmmakers participated in person and online with virtual Q&A’s successfully expanding the conversation around the best in cinema with passionate audiences, illuminating guests and distinguished industry in attendance.”

I can't remember a time I went to the Seattle International Film Festival (Siff) press launch and looked over the list of films and saw so many I was interested in seeing. The claim to fame for over the years is to call it the largest and most-highly attended festival in the United States. This is a fact I've often taken issue with as I don't equate quantity with quality. Granted, there has been a large number of quality features to play the fest over the years, including Golden Space Needle (Best Film) winners such as Kiss of the Spider Woman (1985), My Life as a Dog (1987), Trainspotting (1996), Run Lola Run (1999), Whale Rider (2003) and even recent Best Director winner, Michel Hazanavicius's Oss 117: Nest of Spies in 2006. That said, looking over this year's crop of films I see a lot of films I will be doing my absolute best to see.

Making a terrific first casting announcement, Olivia Wilde, Jason Sudeikis, Brie Larson, and Fred Armisen have been announced as the leading cast of the comedy, Relanxious.
Christopher Storer (the upcoming comedy Sin Bin) will make his directorial debut, and Daniel Dubiecki (Up in the Air) and Lorene Scafaria (Seeking a Friend for the End of the World) are attached as producers.
“Wilde plays Barrett, an anxiety-ridden woman who meets and is smitten with George. Played by Sudeikis, George is agoraphobic and so their courtship is limited to phone conversations in which they discuss the dates they would go on if their phobias didn’t stand in the way. As the fantasies develop, the two must decide if they can put aside their fears in order to find real-life romance. Larsen plays Barrett’s sister, and Armisen plays George’s friend and only contact with the outside world.”

Usually when you're a new couple in Hollywood trying to stay under the radar, you do your best to avoid being seen together, or opening yourself up to invasive questions about the relationship. And yet widely rumored couple Olivia Wilde and Jason Sudeikis are doing pretty much the opposite of that, agreeing to star together in Relanxious, a comedy about an anxious woman and an agoraphobic man who strike up a relationship over the phone. According to Deadline they'll also be joined by 21 Jump Street's Brie Larson, playing the sister of Wilde's character, and Fred Armisen, stepping in as a friend to Sudeikis. The movie will be the directorial debut of Christopher Storer, a writer whose only feature-length credit on IMDb is a still-unreleased comedy called Sin Bin, which makes it mighty hard to judge how he'll tackle this material. But with a cast this strong, it's hard not to...

What happens when a woman crippled by anxiety meets a charismatic agoraphobe? Olivia Wilde (Cowboys and Aliens) and Jason Sudeikis (Horrible Bosses) are hoping that particular romantic comedy premise makes box office gold in their new film, Relanxious. The film will mark the directorial debut of writer Christopher Storer (Sin Bin) in a relationship comedy that explores the power of love when it's complicated by social phobias. Wilde will star as Barrett, a woman plagued by her anxiety who falls for George (Sudeikis), a man whose fear forces him to converse with her only over the telephone. As their conversations lead to increasingly serious fantasy dates, they are tasked with putting aside their fears to find a real-life romance. Relanxious also stars Brie Larson (Scott Pilgrim vs the World) and Fred Armisen (Portlandia) and will begin shooting this summer in Chicago. Hit the jump for more on Relanxious.
