Netflix isn’t messing around in 2020. Not a studio willing to wait around for everyone to slowly awake from the post-holiday coma, the streaming service is hitting the ground running in the new year. Series like “Dracula” are premiering this week, along with a number of other shows, and on the film side, January marks the debut of Tyler Perry’s first Netflix outing — “A Fall From Grace.”

Netflix has confirmed that 56 new original series, movies and specials will be debuting on the streaming service in January. Leading off the lineup are the final seasons of some of the biggest shows on Netflix, including the Emmy-winning animated series “BoJack Horseman,” the family favorite “Anne With an E” and the Ashton Kutcher comedy series “The Ranch.”

Among those shows launching their first seasons in the first month of the year are the Tyler Perry family drama “A Fall From Grace,” the sly satire “Medical Police” and the crime thriller “The Stranger.”

Also look for the sophomore edition of the British import “Sex Education,” season 3 of “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” and season 6 of “Grace & Frankie” with real-life pals Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin.

Tyler Perry is on a roll. He’s currently in post-production on the Bet Plus series “Bruh,” recently became the owner of one of the country’s largest studio lots (which hosted the last Democratic presidential debate), and this year released “A Madea Family Funeral” on top of an enviable list of television projects. Now, Perry will make his Netflix feature film debut with “A Fall From Grace.” Perry announced the news via Twitter (see below.)

The film will drop on Netflix beginning January 17, and it stars Crystal Fox, Phylicia Rashad, Bresha Webb, Cicely Tyson, and Perry himself. According to Netflix’s Strong Black Lead Twitter account, “A Fall From Grace” will be “centered around a divorced woman who feels restored by a new romance, secrets soon start to erode her short-lived joy.”

Tyler Perry is teaming up with Netflix for a new thriller about a woman whose world is shattered by secrets.

The writer-director-producer announced Friday on Twitter, his upcoming film A Fall from Grace will begin streaming on the platform on Jan. 17.

“My next movie guys!!! This is an amazing thriller!!!” Perry captioned a poster for the film. The cast includes Crystal Fox, Phylicia Rashad, Bresha Webb, Cicely Tyson and Perry.

Netflix’s Strong Black Lead account also shared the news in a tweet saying the drama will be “centered around a divorced woman who feels restored by a new romance, secrets soon start to erode her short-lived joy.” The streamer teased more cast members will be announced and tagged Supergirl, Nobody’s Fool and The Game actor Mehcad Brooks in its tweet.

Willow Shields has been cast in a series regular role in “Spinning Out,” the upcoming ice skating drama series at Netflix.

She joins a cast that also includes Kaya Scodelario, who was announced as the series lead on Thursday, taking over the role originally held by Emma Roberts. Shields will star as Serena, Kat Baker’s (Scodelario) younger sister. While Serena lacks her sister’s natural grace on the ice, she makes up for it with discipline and fierce determination. Her complicated relationship with her sister is made up of equal parts loyalty and competition.

Shields is best known for playing Primrose Everdeen in the “Hunger Games” film franchise. She also had a guest-starring role in the USA series “In Plain Sight,” and recently completed filming the series “The Unsettling.” She will also star in the film “A Fall From Grace” alongside Forest Whitaker, Vincent D’Onofrio, and David Lynch.

It's become a Den Of Geek tradition to compile lists about the films we're most looking forward to in the following year, but it's sometimes the case that the bigger, more obvious movies occupy our minds more than the smaller, independent ones.

So to redress the balance a little, we've cast our nets a little wider, and sought out a selection of 20 films which don't necessarily have big budgets or the backing of a major studio, but nevertheless deserve our attention thanks to the quality of their cast, filmmakers or their concepts alone.

X-Men: Days of Future Past

French actor Omar Sy ("The Intouchables") has joined the cast of Bryan Singer's "X-Men: Days of Future Past". Sy's role has not yet been specified.

Behind the camera, David Lynch is a certified phenomenon. In front of it, he remains a little more enigmatic. His cameo credits (“Louie," “The Cleveland Show” and that time they appeared to run out of cast members in “Twin Peaks”) are pretty incongruous with his usual brand of provocative art, and lend a further wacky dimension to his already surreal public persona. Chained arrives on Blu-ray and DVD next week and I was lucky enough to pose some questions to the film’s director and co-writer, Jennifer Lynch.

The film is a dark and utterly fascinating look at a serial killer and explores a number of interesting questions regarding the psychology of this kind of person. I asked Jennifer Lynch about this, ‘torture porn’, shooting on digital, what’s next and more.

The film is fascinating in the questions it raises about nature vs. nurture. Do you find yourself coming down more on one side of that debate and did making Chained change your views at all or lead you in new directions?

Such a great question. I think the dangerous part of nurture vs. nature is the assumption that it is one or the other. It is so deeply case specific. If we look solely at Bob and Rabbit… Bob’s nurture was so damaging,...

Because, looking forward, 2013 promises to be such a fruitful cornucopia of cinema, we were excited to be able to easily list an additional 100 titles we are eagerly looking forward to catching in the new year. Zero Dark Thirty

Indie film darling Mark Duplass is set to play a key supporting role in Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal's film based on the hunt for Osama bin Laden at Annapurna Pictures.

The actor joins a cast that includes Joel Edgerton, Jessica Chastain, Jason Clarke, Edgar Ramirez, Mark Strong, Chris Pratt, Kyle Chandler, Jennifer Ehle, Nash Edgerton, Harold Perrineau Jr. and Frank Grillo.

Jennifer Lynch’s laugh sounds just like you’d expect it to: full of mischievous fun, raspy and more than a little dirty. It’s refreshing to hear that even after her savaged 1993 film debut “Boxing Helena” and a string of spinal surgeries that kept her from making another movie for 15 years, she’s still eager to unleash that laugh, even at her own expense. Her next two films, “Surveillance” (2008) and “Hisss” (2010), failed to find audiences, and “Chained” has run afoul of an Nc-17 rating from the MPAA before it can be released. Nothing has quite gone her way, despite being the only daughter of “Blue Velvet” writer-director David Lynch. Even so, the 44-year-old writer-director is moving forward with her next project, a thriller called “A Fall From Grace” that stars Un Certain Regard jury president Tim Roth as a St. Louis detective tortured by his inability to stop a killer of young.

Tim Roth is currently busy cramming in as much movie-viewing as he can in between meeting with his fellow judges on the Un Certain Regard jury in Cannes. But he’s also locked in a new starring role, signing on to lead Jennifer Lynch’s new film, A Fall From Grace.The movie, written by Eric Wilkinson, finds Roth as a homicide detective tracking down a serial killer. But there’s more to it than that, according to the director. “It’s about a lot of dark, taboo issues, but it’s really a drama about wounds,” Lynch tells The Hollywood Reporter.She’ll be hoping for better luck than with her last effort, Bollywood horror action thriller Hisss, which faced major issues during production (chronicled in documentary Despite The Gods) and arrived to poisonous reviews. Jennifer Lynch ("Surveillance, "Boxing Helena") is next set to direct the thriller "A Fall From Grace" for Apothecary Films says Risky Biz Blog.

The story follows a homicide detective tracking a serial killer along the Mississippi River who burns his victims. Lynch and Eric Wilkinson co-wrote the script.

Though she’s got a few films under her belt, Jennifer Lynch hasn’t exactly enjoyed the easiest time of it in her career. Boxing Helena didn't exactly set the world alight, and her last film, snake-woman horror Hisss, vanished off the radar with little success and barely got released over here. While she has the thriller Rabbit awaiting release, she’s ploughing on to the next, setting up A Fall From Grace. The script, which Lynch wrote with Eric Wilkinson, follows a detective tracking a serial killer who burns his victims along the Mississippi River. It’s partly based on Wilkinson’s trip to the abandoned Old Chain of Rocks Bridge, which stretches over the river near St Louis, and which was the site for a grisly double murder.“It has been an incredible process, writing this piece,” says Lynch in a statement, which got sucked into the Hollywood Reporter’s news hoover.
