Condé Nast Responds To Media Upheaval By Looking To The Screen: Film & TV Roster Now At 37 Titles And Counting
Image
Exclusive: Condé Nast, like all media players, has been forced to reimagine itself.

Over the past year, the company has laid off 5% of its staff, citing the impact of TikTok and other digital competition; reached a settlement with union members; and dealt with a decidedly choppy ad market.

Despite running that gauntlet, however, the media industry mainstay has notably not curtailed its ambitions to make a mark in film and television. In fact, the company is starting to see encouraging returns on its commitment to a print-to-screen pipeline. Condé Nast now has 14 projects in production or post-production set up with distributors like Amazon, Netflix, HBO and Warner Brothers, plus another 23 projects in development with independent financial backers.

Two titles just out this month are based on Vanity Fair pieces. Breath of Fire, a multi-part docuseries on HBO and Max, explores the multi-million-dollar Kundalini yoga industry and its scandalous leader Guru Jagat.

Breath of Fire Review: An Immersive Exploration of Charisma and Corruption
Image
Breath of Fire tells a complex story stretching back decades. At the center are two leaders of the Kundalini yoga movement: Yogi Bhajan and Guru Jagat. Both captivated many seeking spiritual answers, yet their motives drew much criticism.

We learn Bhajan introduced Kundalini yoga to America in the 1960s. A Sikh from Pakistan, he blended its teachings with his faith in ways displeasing to some. Through his 3Ho organization and associated businesses, Bhajan amassed wealth while facing accusations—from imposing strict rules on students to mistreating children at his school in India.

The documentary shed light on Bhajan’s enduring impact. It revealed how a young woman named Katie Griggs came to follow in his largest footsteps. After starting her own LA yoga studio in 2012, Griggs took the name Guru Jagat. She presented herself as Bhajan’s rightful successor, though holes emerged in her story of time spent with him.

35 Most Underrated Snes Games
Image
Even though the Big N has released five more consoles since the Super Nintendo, many Nintendo fans would say the Snes is still the best console that the House of Mario has ever released.

Much of the console’s success has to do with its roster of games, of course. From third-party titles to Nintendo’s own franchises, this was an era—from 1990 to 1996—that showcased the platform’s total dominance over the industry, even as the Sega Genesis proved to be a strong competitor—and we all know who won that console arms race in the end. It’s not difficult to see why: Super Mario World, Super Metroid, and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past are the very best games in their respective series. And that’s not even counting games made by outside studios, such as Capcom and Konami.

There’s a lot more...

Vanity Fair Surf Paradise Story By David Kushner Being Adapted As Documentary By Anchor Entertainment
Image
Exclusive: A story about a Fiji surf paradise gone wrong by David Kushner, the journalist behind A24’s Zola, is to be turned into a documentary.

Kushner has penned Paradise Lost for Vanity Fair and the story is now being adapted by Anchor Entertainment, the production company behind HBO’s Undercurrent: The Disappearance of Kim Wall, and Vanity Fair Studios.

The story follows Navrin, Woody, and Jona – two Aussie surfer bros and their local partner – who thought they’d found their own little slice of paradise in Fiji. That was until the deep-pocketed Chinese developer set up shop next door and started digging up the reef offshore. Then a Silicon Valley-backed scientist who swears he can build the perfect surf break got involved and the whole place became a stopover for the pandemic-era megayacht set.

The doc will be exec produced by Kushner, Ethan Goldman and Dan Baglio for Anchor Entertainment,...

Regé-Jean Page Dives Deep on his Paladin in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves
Image
This article is presented by Paramount Pictures.

Regé-Jean Page’s paladin Xenk is an earnest member of the core heroes who make up Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. Best known for his role as the romantic lead in the first season of Bridgerton, Page is no stranger to working in fantasy, having voiced Orpheus in the podcast series of The Sandman. He took a moment to speak with Den of Geek about the virtues of wearing a cape—but wouldn’t spill any secrets about Xenk’s sword.

Den of Geek: You play Xenk, a paladin who is a bit of a stick in the mud. What can you tell us about your character?

Regé-Jean Page: I don’t think he’d describe himself as a stick in the mud. I think his extended action sequences would also beg to differ. He’s not necessarily no fun. He...
