Blending drama, fantasy and action can make for an entertaining story if done correctly. It can also highlight the personal journey of a character, which his precisely what “The Tai Chi Master” (not to be confused with the Jet Li-movie) is about. Set in a period of great turmoil the movie is perhaps the ideal entertainment vehicle, following the well-known structure of these stories. Directors Siyu Cheng and Zhenzhao Lin certainly have experience in the genre, with the latter having helmed some of the most popular genre features such as “Detective Dee’s Hell Road” and “Restart the Earth”.

Ever since Chinese production companies have discovered the principles of the blockbusters, it seems like every year we are bombarded with a new feature about heroes facing a catastrophe or other odds. While the genre itself varies, many of these features feel as if they are throwbacks to US-American productions such as “Earthquake” or “The Towering Inferno”, as their focus lies on a group of people, their dynamics and the heroics with which they eventually overcome whatever is in their way. “Restart the Earth” by filmmaker Zhenzhao Lin, who also directed the trashy “Snakes”-franchise, goes in a similar direction, with a few nods to production such as “The Last of Us” thrown in for good measure, and there is also the ideological aspect in the mix.

"This is an unprecedented operation." Whoa!! There's a Hong Kong sci-fi action movie called Warriors of Future that has finally opened in theaters in China and Hong Kong this summer. It was being prepped for release in 2019, with an early trailer dropping years ago. But after all the pandemic delays and lockdowns, it's only being released now. Set in the year 2055, a meteorite brings an extraterrestrial to the Earth in the form of an alien vine that "purifies the planet but kills everything in its path." Sing Lee's elite forces are almost wiped out, and the surviving soldier Tai Loi discovers an even bigger conspiracy. Starring Louis Koo, Sean Lau, Carina Lau, Philip Keung, Tse Kwan-ho, and Nick Cheung. This looks Extra epic, from a VFX supervisor making his directorial debut. It's even being marketed as the...

Angry sentient plants turn against humanity! Whoa! What a cool concept. ITN Distribution has debuted a new international trailer a for Chinese epic sci-fi survival movie called Restart the Earth. Following the immense success of China's Wandering Earth, it seems their epic disaster movie industry is getting bigger and churning out more projects year after year. When a drug to replicate plant cells creates a sentient form of a flower, the planet is over taken by flora and humankind is wiped out. A Chinese task force, a widowed father and his young daughter fight to survive in a mission to inject an antidote to the core of the plants to reverse their growth. They must "restart the Earth." This is totally a movie Hollywood would've made in the 90s, but now China is making all of these movies nowadays. As long as they're a hit in China, that's all that matters!
