Warner Bros is set to be the latest studio to gamble on fewer blockbuster movies. But there's a big silver lining, Simon argues...
Last week, the news landed that Warner Bros was considering reducing its output of films, focusing its slate primarily on DC, Lego and Harry Potter movies.
The argument runs that it’s had a bumpy few years, with expensive films such as Pan, Jupiter Ascending and In The Heart Of The Sea leaving the office copy of Excel looking decidedly red and distressed. The box office tail off of Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice is said not to have helped, either. It actually looks like we're officially in the era where a movie will end up making just under $1bn and end up being called a commercial disappointment.
If and when Warner Bros follows such an approach – and it’s not confirmed that it will,...

A new pilot from Empire creator Lee Daniels will go into production this December. Star, which will revolve around four female leads in a girl group, will be set in Atlanta, where it will also film. The pilot was written, directed, and executive-produced by Daniels. Writer Tom Donaghy (The Mentalist, The Whole Truth) will write and executive-produce with Daniels. While the show is not an Empire spinoff, it's also not not a spinoff, because Fox knows what's up. As Fox CEO Dana Walden stated, "It is modern-day music music in Atlanta and Empire is modern-day music business in New York. It’s not inconceivable that the two shows can cross." Included in the casting breakdown for the female leads — Star, Alexandra, Simone, and Cotton — is the call for Cotton to be played by a half-African-American, half-Latina transgender woman "with an eye for fashion." Here's hoping Cookie flies down to Atlanta...

Fox hopes that it’s found the new “Empire” — and the network and studio didn’t have to go very far to get it. Lee Daniels‘ follow-up to his massive hip-hop soap opera hit has its casting underway, and the project will enter production this December in Atlanta. “Star,” from 20th Century Fox Television, is written, directed and executive-produced by Daniels. Tom Donaghy (“The Whole Truth”) will serve as a writer and executive producer on the pilot. The project is the first to emerge from Daniels’ multi-year overall deal with 20th Century Fox Television. Before she signed onto Showtime's "The Affair," Maura Tierney had done practically everything it's possible for an actor to do in television. Her first regular series role (on "The Van Dyke Show") was opposite no less than Dick Van Dyke; her second ("704 Hauser") was working for Norman Lear, on the same set where "All in the Family" took place. She's been the leading woman on a classic (if underappreciated in its time) sitcom in "NewsRadio," helped carry an enormous hit drama ("ER") as it transitioned away from its original cast, been the lead on a legal procedural ("The Whole Truth"), and was one of the original stars of "Parenthood" before a bout with breast cancer forced her to drop out of the role of Sarah Braverman. She had done all of those things on one broadcast network or another, which is why she agreed to play Helen Solloway, the wife...

With the success of "Empire," Fox is continuing their relationship with both producer Lee Daniels and shows about the behind the scenes of the music business.
The network has ordered the drama pilot "Star," an Atlanta-set tale about three girls rising to the top as they form a band.
Speaking at the network's TCA presentation, Fox TV chief Dana Walden says: "The project features a lot of Lee's own DNA and represents a new perspective, that of the artist. The setup lends to a great soap operatic storytelling machine."
Daniels will co-write and executive produce the project with "The Whole Truth" creator Tom Donaghy. There is reportedly crossover potential between "Star" and "Empire," though there are no plans at this time.

Jamie acts like a right arse in this week’s Outlander — and that’s a good thing. Here’s why.
Aside from sending some rather mixed messages to Laoghaire, Claire’s husband has made all the right moves in the short time we’ve known him. He’s deftly navigated complex clan politics. He’s landed a smart, hot, capable wife. He’s even believed the most unbelievable of stories — that Claire is a time-traveling nurse from the 1940s — with a wry grin and a love-endures-all attitude. We’ve rarely seen him make a misstep; the guy is on point.

Wild Bunch unleashed Abel Ferrara’s Welcome to New York on big and small screens at Cannes on Saturday night [May 17].
Although not in Official Selection, the film starring Gerard Depardieu in a role inspired by former Imf chief and French presidential candidate Dominique Strauss Kahn’s humiliating arrest in New York in 2011 on sex charges, later dropped, was one of the most anticipated on the Croisette.
Industry, press and public watched the picture at the Star cinema as well as in a makeshift theatre on the Carlton’s Nikki Beach, before heading to party where guests were frisked by fake NYPD cops on entering and goodie bags stuffed with white bath robes, whips, masks and handcuffs were handed out.
Simultaneously, the film also went up live on a dozen VOD sites in France, including Wild Bunch’s platform FilmoTV, as well as in Germany, Spain and Italy.

Take a meeting, take a number. Several dozen actors in Hollywood are taking meetings with J.J. Abrams, Kathleen Kennedy and the producers of “Star Wars: Episode VII.” You can add to that mix Lupita Nyong'o, who recently won an Oscar for her role in Steve McQueen’s “12 Years A Slave.” With “Girls” star Adam Driver being the only name that looks locked in right now (he’ll play the new Darth Vader-like baddie apparently), contenders include John Boyega ("Attack The Block"), Ed Speleers (aka Jimmy Kent from "Downton Abbey"), theatre actors Matthew James Thomas and Ray Fisher, and the already-rumored "Breaking Bad" and "Friday Night Lights" star Jesse Plemons. There hasn’t been too much word of females in the mix for 'Star Wars' thus far. Jeremy Kay on the 2014 European Film Market in Berlin.
It was the warmest of Berlins, it was the coolest of Berlins. As the Efm began to wind down this week, only the mild weather offered succour to the lack of heat in the market.
The proximity of the holidays, Sundance and the Iffr in Rotterdam routinely makes preparing for Berlin a perplexing time, yet this year there were fewer marquee titles on offer than usual.
Nonetheless the low number of must-haves, which included FilmNation’s The Whole Truth, Im Global’s Labor Of Love, K5’s Vice and Qed International’s Rock The Kasbah, did not preclude a sustainable if unflashy volume of trade.
Naturally there were talking points. The plight of Exclusive Media came into sharp focus and will dominate conversations in the weeks to come, while The Weinstein Company swooped in a $7m preemptive deal for potential Oscar contender The Imitation Game.

Having meted out justice for his country in the last three James Bond outings, Daniel Craig is now set to do the same in an entirely different setting in the courtroom drama, The Whole Truth.
Word surfaced earlier this month via the Daily Mail that Craig was in negotiations to lead the project, with Variety announcing that he’s now attached to star in the upcoming film.
Interestingly, the original report specifically describes the film as a courtroom drama, whilst the more recent describes it as a thriller. Of course, a film like Runaway Jury shows that the thriller element can be introduced very successfully into the courtroom drama, and given Craig’s undeniable talents in the thriller genre, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if we get a little of both.

Though Daniel Craig is all set to return for Bond 25, we might be seeing the English actor on screen beforehand in a different kind of role. Variety is reporting today that Craig has signed on for Courtney Hunt’s upcoming film The Whole Truth. The script, penned by Nicholas Kazan, is set to be a courtroom thriller/drama and will have the actor playing a lawyer. That, and the fact that it will be shot in Boston, are all we really know about the project at this time.
Bond 25 currently has a release date set for November 6th, 2015. With that in mind, I would imagine that The Whole Truth will go first as being an indie film, it’s clearly not as big of a production and no doubt has a shorter shooting schedule. Unfortunately, no release date has been set yet but with Craig now on board,...

With the future for “The Girl Who Played With Fire” still uncertain—“Seven” screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker was reported to have taken a crack at the script last summer—and only “Bond 24” to look forward to, Daniel Craig doesn’t have a lot on his plate, but Variety reports that’s about to change. According to the trade magazine, Craig has attached himself to the Nicholas Kazan-scripted thriller “The Whole Truth.” As it stands now, not much is known about the film nor when production is planned, especially since Craig is set to jump back into a tuxedo later this year for the “Skyfall” follow-up which is set for release in 2015. But Baz Bamigboye notes it will be directed by "Frozen River" helmer Courtney Hunt. Imagine if you will a steely television executive, whom we’ll call Hank, sitting in his plush office across from an equally intimidating man in a fitting black suit chain smoking his life away. The year is 1960 and the cigarette smoking man has just come off the successful first season run of his show “The Twilight Zone”. “Mr. Serling”, the TV exec says with a steady voice, “while your show is a major hit for the CBS Corporation it is greatly taxing our money reserves. At $65,000 per episode you have greatly exceeded your, if I may say so, generous budget.” Mr. Serling just stares at Hank with his piercing brown eyes. “So what do you propose?” he asks as he takes another drag from his cancer stick. The exec replies that he is willing to slash the cost per episode by filming on videotape rather than the usual film. Serling...

Spoiler Alert: If you haven’t watched the season finale of Sons of Anarchy, do not read below.
The death toll on FX’s Sons of Anarchy has swelled once again, and while that’s to be expected from a season finale of one of the most deadly shows on TV, the shocking murder of Maggie Siff’s Tara Knowles at the hands of Gemma (Katey Sagal) is one that will change Jax Teller forever.

Exclusive: The Mark Gordon Company has set up two more drama projects at ABC through the company’s overall deal at ABC Studios — a character-driven procedural written by Tom Donaghy, creator of the ABC drama The Whole Truth, and a project penned by feature scribe Dean Georgaris (Paycheck). Both are executive produced by Gordon and Nick Pepper. The untitled Tom Donaghy drama, which the Mark Gordon Co is producing with ABC Studios-based Michael McDonald, centers on a big city criminologist who is brought in to help local police crack a case involving a shocking string of disappearances. But the chief detective she’s been hired to help is her father — and they haven’t talked in 10 years. The Georgaris-penned Clementine, produced by the Mark Gordon Co and Ilene Staple, centers on a profoundly troubled 28-year-old psychic who sees her life to begin to change in unexpected ways when she...

Who doesn’t love The Twilight Zone? Well, I don’t know, but I know I don’t want to meet them. It’s safe to assume that most horror fans of any form of advance age(I’m 35) grew up, at the very least, watching re-runs of The Twilight Zone on syndicated television. Some of the creepiest moments in television history are thanks to this series. Hell, I remember as a kid, when I was falling asleep to the sound of the TV playing in the background, just the sound of the opening theme chilled me to my core. I have so many fond memories of watching this show as a child, and as an adult.
Collectors of media are aware, The Twilight Zone has been available on various formats, in various packages for us to consume. But, they’ve always been a bit on the pricey side. I...

Television's quest to make a modern-day adaptation of everything in the public domain continues apace with a new update of "Wuthering Heights" being developed at NBC. According to the Hollywood Reporter, "Everwood" creator Greg Berlanti (whose recent USA miniseries "Political Animals" ended last month) is working on a contemporization of Emily Brontë's 1847 novel about the ill-fated love between Catherine Earnshaw and the brooding Heathcliff. The hourlong drama, which will be written by Tom Donaghy ("The Whole Truth"), is called "Napa" and is set in California wine country, a slightly more welcoming environment than the moorland of the original. Berlanti and Donaghy will executive produce the potential series. "Wuthering Heights" has been adapted to the big screen many times -- "Fish Tank" filmmaker Andrea Arnold's 2011 version, which for the first time casts a black actor,...
