Reginald VelJohnson, remembered for his role in action classic Die Hard, and comedian Eric Wareheim (Tim & Eric) have also joined the cast.

The actors join previously announced cast members Drew Starkey, Dan Stevens, Blink Twice star Adria Arjona, and UFC Champion Alex “Poatan” Pereira, who is still in talks.

Filmmaker Joe Swanberg was a major figure in the mumblecore film movement, and as the years have gone by he has also earned several credits in the horror genre, whether by taking acting roles in films like A Horrible Way to Die, You’re Next, The Sacrament, and Blackout, or by directing the werewolf movie Silver Bullets and contributing a segment to the anthology film V/H/S. Now Swanberg has increased his number of horror credits by five, as Deadline reports that he has teamed with Jordan Yale Levine and Jordan Beckerman of Yale Entertainment to produce a slate of five horror films – all of which have already wrapped filming! Four of the titles are Helldorado, Kenneled, Yellow Eyes, and Monkey’s Magic Merry Go Round. The fifth movie is currently simply known as the Untitled Jae Matthews Project.

Fans of the MonsterVerse will have to wait until they see the follow-up to the successful Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Director Adam Wingard will instead be prioritizing a movie with A24, becoming the latest filmmaker to grace the "indie" movie studio.

Titled Onslaught, the movie will be the next project by Wingard and will be released before he tackles any other films. Information on the film is currently scarce, but it is said to be more in line with the director's initial films. Likewise, it's just one example of A24's expansion, with the studio pursuing more major directors and going beyond its smaller-scale boundaries.

Fresh off the success of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and with Face/Off 2 in development, director Adam Wingard and screenwriter Simon Barrett have just set up another project together – but this isn’t another entry in an established, blockbuster-level property. Instead, Wingard and Barrett are going back to their roots with this one. Deadline reports that their new project, which is called Onslaught, is “in the vein of Wingard and Barrett’s cult classics like The Guest and You’re Next.“

As they note, Wingard and Barrett made the horror thrillers You’re Next (2011) and The Guest (2014) together before they ventured into franchise territory with the 2016 Blair Witch movie. They also made the 2010 horror film A Horrible Way to Die together, and while that movie does have its own cult following, the cult isn’t as large as the ones that follow You’re Next and The Guest.

Three years ago, back when director Adam Wingard’s Godzilla vs. Kong was released, it was announced that the filmmaker would be making a movie based on the classic animated series ThunderCats (which originally ran from 1985 to 1989), with his approach being to make it a live action / CGI animation hybrid, as he couldn’t imagine hiring actors to just play the ThunderCats in makeup. Then Wingard got caught up in the production of Godzilla x Kong: A New Empire, which is set to reach theatres on March 29th – but during an interview with io9, he confirmed that he hasn’t left the ThunderCats behind. Author Django Wexler’s novel How to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying – which has been described as “Groundhog Day meets Guardians of the Galaxy” – won’t be reaching store shelves until May 21st (you can pre-order a copy at This Link), but Deadline reports that Legendary has already come out the winner in a bidding war over the adaptation rights. In 2013, a home invasion horror movie was released that made a ridiculous amount of money relative to its tiny production budget which helped launch the career of a now-prominent filmmaker. That may sound like "The Purge" but I'm actually talking about "You're Next," the beloved slasher flick that helped to put Adam Wingard on the map. Wingard has since made giant blockbusters like "Godzilla vs. Kong," which helped bring movie theaters back to life in 2021 in the aftermath of the quarantine era of the pandemic. Wingard is now an A-list director, and that journey pretty much starts with this movie.

What's interesting about "You're Next" is that it's almost become a cult classic of sorts, as it wasn't a big enough hit...

For years now, writer Simon Barrett has been involved with several of my favorite modern horrors, including You’re Next, the criminally underappreciated Blair Witch (2016), and A Horrible Way to Die, as well as The Guest. But now, Barrett is branching out creatively, directing his first feature Seance, which follows a group of young women at an elite prep school who are being murdered by a mysterious entity after a prank amongst several of the students goes horribly wrong.

During the recent press day for Seance, I had the opportunity to speak with Barrett about his directorial debut, and we also dug into some of our own geeky tendencies as horror fans throughout our conversation. Barrett also discussed the inspirations behind the story of Seance, the importance of being good to your characters when you’re writing and/or directing, working with his incredible cast, and more.

Watching the evolution of Adam Wingard’s career over the years has been a lot of fun for this writer, as he’s navigated the waters of low-budget/high-ambition genre projects like Pop Skull and Home Sick to his work on notable indie horror fare like A Horrible Way to Die as well as the first two V/H/S films to other fan favorites like You’re Next and The Guest, and he even had the chutzpah to take on Blair Witch back in 2016 as well (a film that I rewatch every Halloween season and still adore). Adam Wingard, director of the upcoming monster showdown “Godzilla vs. Kong,” will helm the remake of the 1997 thriller “Face/Off” for Paramount.

Wingard will write the script with longtime collaborator Simon Barrett. The two have previously worked on the 2016 found footage horror film “Blair Witch,” the 2014 thriller “The Guest” and the 2010 horror “A Horrible Way to Die.”

The original “Face/Off,” an action thriller, was directed by John Woo and starred John Travolta and Nicolas Cage as an FBI special agent and a terrorist, respectively. The two arch enemies assume each other’s identity by, as the title suggests, switching faces. Travolta’s FBI agent Sean Archer tracks down Castor Troy (Cage), but Troy is severely injured in a plane crash. Archer then undergoes surgery to replace his face with Troy’s in order to go undercover as a criminal.

Filmmaker Joe Swanberg is best known for his work in the mumblecore subgenre, writing and directing micro-budget films with an emphasis on naturalistic acting and improvised dialogue. His movies, like 2013's Drinking Buddies and 2014's Happy Christmas, are indie comedy-dramas concerned with the interpersonal relationships and the romantic entanglements of people in their twenties and early thirties. Occasionally, however, Swanberg works in the horror genre, as an actor and director. Now, he's collaborating with Dave Franco on the actor's directorial debut, a film titled The Rental, which combines Swanberg's mumblecore and horror sensibilities with mixed results. Ever since the setup was popularized by The Blair Witch Project over twenty years ago, the horror subgenre of found footage has never really gone out of fashion. The quality of such films is highly variable, but some of the better examples are found in the anthology series V/H/S, of which a fourth installment has been announced.

Following V/H/S, V/H/S/2 and V/H/S: Viral, V/H/S 94 will follow much the same format, but instead of a collection of disjointed shorts connected by a wraparound story, the plot of each part will form part of a single narrative pulled together by a linking tale that each segment will presumably augment with its events.

Dave Franco is hoping his first stab at directing will be a good one. The star of Now You See Me, Scrubs and The Disaster Artist will debut his first feature film next month – a horror, called The Rental.

With a cast led by Franco’s real-life wife Alison Brie (Glow), Dan Stevens (Apostle), Sheila Vand (Snowpiercer), and Jeremy Allen White (Shameless), the film presents itself as a pretty taut vacation thriller in its first trailer, which arrived online this week. Known for 1980’s cult horrors including Re-Animator and From Beyond, Gordon also worked in indie theater and founded the successful Organic Theater Company with his wife, Carolyn Purdy-Gordon.

Screen Media has acquired worldwide rights to the sci-fi/horror anthology movie “Portals.” The film features segments directed by genre veterans Eduardo Sanchez (“The Blair Witch Project”), Gregg Hale (“V/H/S 2”), Timo Tjahjanto (“The Night Comes For Us”) and Liam O’Donnell (“Skyline”).

Created by Chris White, the genre-bending story is set around a series of worldwide blackouts — after which millions of mysterious cosmic anomalies appear everywhere across the planet. While many flee from the sentient objects, some people are drawn toward — and into — them with horrifying consequences.

Screenwriter Simon Barrett has shown viewers the scary side of seclusion in films like Blair Witch and A Horrible Way to Die, and soon he'll take us into the Temple, a new horror film coming to theaters this September from Screen Media Films.

Synopsis: "Three American tourists follow a mysterious map deep into the jungles of Japan searching for an ancient temple. When spirits entrap them, their adventure quickly becomes a horrific nightmare."

Directed by Michael Barrett from a screenplay by Simon Barrett, Temple stars Logan Huffman, Natalia Warner, and Brandon Sklenar. Screen Media Films will release Temple in theaters on September 1st.

Hobo With a Shotgun director Jason Eisener is set to direct an untitled techno thriller that is being produced by Bad Hombre, which is the new production company formed by Evil Dead and Don't Breathe Fede Alvarez director.

The movie is being written by Simon Barrett, also worked on Blair Witch, The Guest, You’re Next, and A Horrible Way to Die. There's no information on what the story for the film will entail but with the talent on board that's developing it, we will probably get an awesome movie!

Eisner is a fun director that has a very crazy and wild directing story. The guy works on a very dark and twisted level so there's no doubt that this Techno Thriller is going to end up being a crazy ass movie. If you've seen Hobo With a Shotgun, then you know what I'm talking about.

Bad Hombre, the company formed by Good Universe and Fede Alvarez last February, has announced its first project, Untitled Techno Thriller.

Bad Hombre, producer of films in the horror, thriller and sci-fi genres, is not revealing plot details on the thriller to be written by Simon Barrett and directed by Jason Eisener.

Alvarez (pictured above) and Rodo Sayagues of Bad Hombre will produce. Nathan Kahane, Joe Drake and Erin Westerman of Good Universe will serve as executive producers alongside Jay Basu.

"Shall we begin?" Netflix has unveiled the full-length trailer (+ a filmmaker featurette) for Adam Wingard's adaptation of Death Note, based on the very popular Japanese manga/anime series. Wingard is the director of the new Blair Witch as well as You're Next, The Guest, and A Horrible Way to Die. Death Note stars Nat Wolff (seen in Paper Towns) as the teen who comes across a book that allows him to kill anyone without any risk of danger himself. But of course there's a catch. Also starring Keith Stanfield, Shea Whigham, Margaret Qualley, Willem Dafoe and Masi Oka. This actually looks better than expected, I will be watching this. Plus, I'll see anything with Keith Stanfield in it, he's awesome and looks killer in this. Boy, I hope this is good. Directed by Adam Wingard, Death Note is heading to Netflix on August 25. The English-language version has the following official description: "Intoxicated by the power of a supernatural notebook, a young man begins killing those he deems unworthy of life." That is what is promised, and that is what's delivered in the first full trailer, which you can watch below. I've enjoyed Adam Wingard's directing work in the past, especially The Guest, You're Next and A Horrible Way to Die, and though I didn't care for Blair Witch, I remain optimistic about his vision for the movie version of the Japanese manga. On the surface, Adam Wingard and “Godzilla vs. Kong” are a match made in heaven. The indie horror veteran has been working toward directing a summer blockbuster for the past decade, gradually taking on bigger and bigger budgets, and on Tuesday, Wingard tweeted that he’s “disgustingly invested in these monsters.”

Indie horror wunderkind Adam Wingard has signed on to direct the next blockbuster in Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment’s growing monster franchise, “Godzilla Vs. Kong.”

Quite prolific at 34-years-old, Wingard cut his teeth on micro-budget horrors “Pop Skull” and “A Horrible Way to Die,” often working with indie mainstay Joe Swanberg. His more recent film, “The Guest,” starred Dan Stevens and premiered at Sundance in 2014. He has been moving into bigger budget indies with his last two projects, a 2016 follow-up to “Blair Witch,” and “Death Note,” a manga adaptation set for an August release.

After years of making a name for himself as a respected director of low-budget thrillers, filmmaker Adam Wingard will be tackling two iconic monsters next. The filmmaker has come aboard to helm Warner Bros. and Legendary's highly-anticipated monster battle Godzilla vs. Kong, which will bring together the studios' Godzilla and King Kong franchises. This move comes just a few months after the studios finalized a writers room to generate ideas for this film, Godzilla: King of Monsters and other potential movies.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news today that the filmmaker has finalized his deal with Warner Bros. and Legendary.
