‘The Smashing Machine’ Review: Dwayne Johnson Delivers the Blows as a Tormented Fighter in Benny Safdie’s Gritty and Downbeat Mma Flick
Image
Sticks, stones, body blows and multiple knees to the head may break his bones, but names are what do real damage to pioneering UFC fighter Mark Kerr, a beast of a man who could crush opponents in the ring and fall apart as soon as he stepped outside it.

In Benny Safdie’s compellingly gritty and offbeat biopic, The Smashing Machine, Kerr wavers between hot and cold, passive and aggressive, chilled-out on the couch and pulverizing a door in his living room, showcasing a fragility that’s way bigger than his ballooning biceps. Played by Dwayne Johnson in the wrestler-turned-actor’s most absorbing turn yet, the mixed martial arts champ anchors a rise-and-fall fight flick that takes many cues from the genre but never delivers a Rocky-style knockout — nor does it even try to.

Marking the director’s first feature made apart from his brother, Josh, the film retains much...

Susan Backlinie and Bruce in Les Dents de la mer (1975)
The Jaws theme is apparently a hit at funerals in Britain
Susan Backlinie and Bruce in Les Dents de la mer (1975)
Imagine seeing your beloved aunt lowered into the ground, only to hear dunn dunn…The odds of a shark attack during a funeral are low (but never zero) but apparently a lot of people across the pond are having plenty of fun with it, as the theme from Jaws has seen an uptick in usage at such mournful events.

John Williams’ theme to Jaws was named as one of the most commonly used unique and unusual songs used at funerals, according to Co-op Funeralcare, which has been studying the usage of music at the ceremonies for two decades and drew from more than 90,000 services. As per Daily Record, Jaws ranked #3, with another movie favorite,...

Lauren Christy Wrote Hits for Avril Lavigne and Dua Lipa. Now She Warns of a “National Funeral for Songwriters If Things Don’t Change”
Image
“This is a labor of love for me,” says Lauren Christy. The hit songwriter — whose credits include Avril Lavigne’s “Complicated,” Bebe Rexha’s “Me, Myself and I” and Enrique Iglesias’ “Tonight (I’m Lovin’ You)” — is talking about the just-released collection Their Hits, My Way featuring her own interpretations of her greatest hits, but she could just as easily be referring to the profession of songwriting itself.

When Christy was coming up, first as an artist and later as part of production trio The Matrix, the economics of the craft were starkly different from those of today. In the ’90s and early 2000s, you could make a comfortable living from writing songs on a commercial release. Even if said song wasn’t a single, the proportional pay from an album cut — with LPs or CDs costing upward of $10 each — was not insignificant. “You could literally buy a house,” says Christy.

Tyler, the Creator ‘Just Wanted to Be Silly Again’ on ‘Don’t Tap the Glass’
Image
A voice at the beginning of Don’t Tap That Glass declares “None of that deep shit!” in reference to the music to come on the record — and that’s the vibe Tyler, the Creator wanted on the album. In a new interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music on Thursday, the rapper shared why it was important to keep things “fun” on the record.

“It was being silly, just fun again. Because Chromakopia was so like, for me… I’m not saying it’s the most mature, deep shit.

Carlos Alcaraz just gave Netflix viewers one more reason to watch
Image
You might not be a fan of sports documentaries. That is fair. Perhaps you don't like tennis, either, or Carlos Alcaraz, but the key to any good doc is that it brings you in even if you don't care or know much about the subject.

In the case of Netflix's documentary Carlos Alcaraz: My Way, the general reviews are good, though tennis legend Rafael Nadal is not a huge fan. Nadal told L'Equipe after the doc was released in April that he thought what he watched made Alcaraz appear to be more into tennis than working hard to become a great player.

The odd part is that most likely don't see the documentary that way. Plus, the project was made by following around Alcaraz in 2024 and during the year he was turning 21 years old. If one is going to party a lot, the early 20s are the time.

Carlos Alcaraz: My Way...

2025 Tony Awards highlights: The best, the worst, and the ‘Hamilton’ mixtape
Image
With a Wicked host at the helm — that would be Elphaba actress and Tony winner Cynthia Erivo — it’s no surprise the 78th annual Tony Awards had its fair share of magical moments.

The evening, celebrating the best and brightest of the 2024-25 Broadway season, aired live from Radio City Music Hall in New York and had no shortage of star power, thrilling performances, and a few surprises hiding in the wings. Read on for the highlights (and a few lowlights) from the 2025 Tonys telecast.

Best: Cynthia Erivo’s opening number

Some Tony Awards openers go full tilt — loads of dancers and props and shiny bells and whistles, but when you have Cynthia Erivo, what compares to that voice? After a set-up where she kindly declines advice for what she should do to open the show, and some affirmation from Oprah Winfrey herself that “the only thing you need to do is just be yourself,...

Cynthia Erivo Gets Support From Oprah, Belts Out “Sometimes All You Need Is a Song” in Tony Awards Opening
Image
Cynthia Erivo was ready for her close-up on the 2025 Tony Awards.

The host, a Tony winner herself, who also has an Emmy and a Grammy, was joined by Oprah Winfrey backstage at the top of the CBS ceremony for a moment that paid homage to both this year’s Tony-nominated musical revival Sunset Blvd. and a memorable moment on the press tour for the first Wicked film, where co-star Ariana Grande grabbed Erivo’s finger.

Backstage, Erivo walked over to Winfrey and asked what she was doing there and the mogul said she had to be there.

Erivo asked, “What do you do when everybody is telling you what you need to do?”

Winfrey replied, “Forget about them, babe. The only thing you need to do is just be yourself.”

With Winfrey pointing at her, Erivo grabbed her finger, just as Grande did to her on the Wicked press tour,...

Remembering the day Star Trek legend William Shatner crooned "My Way" to Star Wars creator George Lucas
Image
Attendees at the 33rd annual American Film Institute Life Achievement Award ceremony honoring Star Wars creator George Lucas got a surprise from the final frontier when, of all people, William Shatner, Star Trek’s original Captain Kirk, arrived on stage to open the festivities. It happened on June 9, 2005, and it remains an indelible moment of entertainment galaxies colliding.

Shatner basked in the moment, giving a remarkably Shatner-ian performance. He hammed it up, smiled broadly, joked about his hair (comparing it to the honoree’s iconic follicles), and, yes, sang. Upon Shatner's introduction, the faces of Lucas, Harrison Ford, Steven Spielberg, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, and Chewbacca all expressed shock. Shatner then elicited chuckles with his opening line: “Star Trek changed everything.” He then cracked, “Aren’t these conventions wonderful?” And from there, after two stormtroopers nearly carried him off the stage, Shatner engaged in his signature talk-sing warbling, delivering a...

‘The Cleaning Lady’ Season 4 Episode 10 Photos, Promo and Air Date
Image
Fox’s The Cleaning Lady season four episode 10 will, hopefully, be a little less stressful for Thony. Episode nine found her performing surgery on a woman with a bomb implanted in her chest, thanks to Ramona. It also confirmed a love triangle has developed between Jorge, Thony, and Dr. Sean Dupont. The teaser for episode 10 indicates all of that may be put on the back burner when Jorge’s arrested.

Season four episode 10, “Queen for a Day,” will air on Tuesday, May 27, 2025 at 8pm Et/Pt.

You’re a Lifelong U2 Fan and Only Have Eight Minutes to Interview Bono — What Do You Ask?
Image
There’s “How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb,” and then there’s “How to Sufficiently Interview Someone Whose Work You’ve Spent Countless Meaningful Hours with While Over Zoom to Promote a Film About Themselves, All Inside of Eight Minutes.” Who knows what number among the hundreds of thousands (millions?) that have attended U2 concerts in the last 45 years would sell an arm and leg for limited time of any kind with Bono, whose odd mixture of talent, sincerity, and absurdity have left an imprint on fans that goes well past the standard rockstar glitz and glamour.

My own opportunity arose via “Bono: Stories of Surrender,” Andrew Dominik’s cinematic rendition of a one-man stage show that itself condensed Bono’s compelling, self-effacing memoir “Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story.” Those who read that book will recognize many stories captured herein, though they’ve been jumbled around, reanimated by Bono’s buoyant presence,...

Spain, Brazil, Uruguay Dominate Quirino Awards as ‘Black Butterflies’ Wins Top Prize
Image
Animated works from Spain, Brazil and Uruguay topped the eighth Quirino Awards, the premier celebration of Ibero-American animation.

Spain’s David Baute scored best feature with his debut “Black Butterflies,” a migration-themed climate drama that has already won praise at Annecy, the Goyas and the Platino Awards. Brazil’s irreverent “Jorel’s Brother” clinched best series for its fifth season, while Uruguay’s Alfredo Soderguit took best short for “Capybaras,” an allegory of prejudice and friendship.

Known for his documentary background, Tenerife-born director Baute crafts a sweeping tale of three women from different corners of the world, each forced into migration by the climate crisis. The feature builds on Baute’s 2020 doc Climate Exodus and has already claimed prizes at the Goya and Platino Awards. Co-written with Yaiza Berrocal, “Black Butterflies” is produced by Spain’s Ikiru Films and Tinglado Film, in collaboration with Panama’s Anangu Grup.

Dwayne Johnson Takes a Prestige Swing in First ‘The Smashing Machine’ Trailer
Image
The long-awaited trailer has arrived for A24’s The Smashing Machine, a prestige swing for Dwayne Johnson, one of the biggest movie stars in the world known for blockbusters and spectacle rather than (relatively) stripped down indies.

Johnson stars as Mark Kerr, the real-life two-time UFC Heavyweight Tournament Champion who was the subject of the 2002 HBO documentary of the same name that detailed Kerr’s journey and struggles with addiction to pain killers.

Set to Frank Sinatra’s “My Way,” the trailer shows Johnson sporting prosthetics on his face to help him better resemble Kerr, as well as speaking with an Ohio-area accent rather than his trademark booming voice.

Benny Safdie wrote and directed the project, which stars frequent Johnson collaborator Emily Blunt as Kerr’s wife. Blunt played matchmaker between Johnson and Safdie, after appearing with him in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.

The Smashing Machine is a career pendulum swing for Johnson,...

Carlos Alcaraz’s My Way docuseries is must-watch for tennis fans and newcomers alike
Image
World No. 2 tennis player Carlos Alcaraz shares his soul, talent, and vulnerability in the three-part Netflix docuseries "My Way," which premiered on April 23, 2025.

It is the latest Netflix installment devoted to tennis, following the two-season run of "Break Point" and with planned future projects featuring Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams forthcoming.

However, the My Way viewer doesn't need to be an ardent tennis fan. Acaraz's story is as much about who he is off the court as it is about his spectacular tennis talent. The docuseries is divided into three episodes: Episode 1, "Finding Joy in the Pain" (44 minutes), Episode 2, "I'm Not Rafa" (38 minutes), and Episode 3, "My Way" (33 minutes).

Key takeaways from Carlos Alcaraz's My Way1. Alcaraz is a typical 21 year old

He calls himself a "20-something kid," and that assessment rings true as Alcaraz craves time away from the tennis court to party with his friends, enjoy time with his family,...

Led Zeppelin Sued Little-Known Band Over ‘Gilligan’s Island’/‘Stairway to Heaven’ Mashup
Image
1970s pop group Little Roger and the Goosebumps created their most famous song out of a combination of exhaustion, desperation and an affection for situation comedies. In 1977, the band needed “material to pad the last set of the grueling 5 nights a week/4 sets a night routine.” Their solution: A goofy, Weird Al-esque mashup of hard rock standard “Stairway to Heaven” and the theme song to Gilligan’s Island.

The song went over well enough with live audiences that Little Roger and the Goosebumps recorded a single, which became a signature tune for the obscure band. The group’s members were good enough musicians that they could recreate Led Zeppelin’s signature sound themselves, while appropriating every inane lyric from “The Ballad of Gilligan’s Island,” the theme to the Bob Denver sitcom. It was a nice little success story — that is, until Led Zeppelin’s lawyers got wind of it,...

Image
Miguel Gomes’s Grand Tour premieres in theaters on March 28 before coming to Mubi on April 18.Grand Tour. Some years ago, I traveled nearly the length of Russia on the Trans-Siberian Railroad. That winter was warm, as nearly all are now, but a Siberian winter is still winter by any definition, and for two weeks I shivered my way from Ulaanbaatar to Moscow. I slipped on the vast frozen expanse of Lake Baikal, visited a museum dedicated to the painter Nicholas Roerich where all the paintings were fakes, saw a cathedral built atop the merchant house where in one night the entire Romanov line had been eliminated. On the leg from Irkutsk to Novosibirsk I shared a cabin with three men. I do not speak Russian, and for twenty-eight hours we managed to communicate via gestures and photos and sentence fragments ventured in halting English. They wanted to know where I was coming from,...

Limp Bizkit’s Lawsuit Against Universal Music Rollin’ Ahead As Band Seeks $200M In Royalties
Image
Fred Durst and Limp Bizkit weren’t doing it all for the nookie — they wanted their money also.

The $200 million lawsuit filed by the band over unpaid royalties is rollin’ forward after a judge ruled against Universal Music Group’s motion to dismiss. Filed in October in L.A.’s Central District, the suit says that as of April 2024, the plaintiffs “had not seen a dime in royalties on any Limp Bizkit assets.”

The complaint also accuses Umg of having a “fraudulent” system in place “to conceal artists’ royalties and keep those profits for itself.”

In his 17-page ruling this week (read it here), Judge Percy Anderson wrote: “The Court denies the Motion to Dismiss challenging the sufficiency of the copyright claims. Defendant shall file its Answer to the copyright claims asserted in the 1st AC by no later than April 7, 2025.”

The lawsuit by Durst and the nü metal band...

James Marsden Wants to Play Frank Sinatra in a Biopic

James Marsden wants to play Frank Sinatra in a biopic.

“I’ve always loved emulating some of the old crooners, like Bobby Darin and Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin,” Marsden told the New York Post this week. “I always thought there were so many interesting stories of Frank Sinatra’s life that could be played. And for whatever reason, you’ve never really seen a movie about him.”

To be fair, Ray Liotta played Sinatra in 1998’s made-for-television movie The Rat Pack, James Russo played him in Stealing Sinatra, also made for TV (released in 2003, the movie covers the 1963 kidnapping of the singer’s famous son), Dennis Hopper played him in 2003’s The Night We Call It a Day, about Sinatra’s 1963 Australia tour, and Robert Knepper played him in 2012’s My Way, about the life of French singer Claude François.

But Marsden is still kind of right — there has...

Who was eliminated in The Masked Singer season 13, episode 3?
Image
It was Rat Pack Night on The Masked Singer season 13, episode 3. It was also the Group A finals, which would mean one more celebrity would be unmasked.

Caution: This post contains Spoilers for The Masked Singer season 13, episode 3.

The group finals are always a big moment. We get potential double eliminations, unless the panelists decide to save one of them, and a Battle Royale for one of the singers to stay on. This final was a little different, though. Instead of a double elimination as in more recent seasons, the show went back to its original routes and two would go through to the Final Six.

Ant, Coral, and Papparazzo sang their hearts out in an attempt to get through to the next stage to go up against the finalists of other groups. They sang a variety of Rat Pack songs, putting their own styles on the songs.

Who was...

‘The Masked Singer’: Who Is Coral? Robin Thicke Guesses a Former Nickelodeon Star | Exclusive Video
Image
Should we be freaking the freak out over who might be under the Coral mask on “The Masked Singer?” This week, Robin Thicke thinks maybe so.

In TheWrap’s exclusive sneak peek at Wednesday night’s episode, Thicke guesses that it may just be former Nickelodeon and current “Suits LA” star Victoria Justice performing as Coral, recalling how he first met her at The Preakness Stakes.

“I met this lovely actress, and she can sing,” he recalled. “I think the high school ring might mean because she plays a high schooler on the show ‘Victorious,’ could this be Victoria Justice?”

You can watch “The Masked Singer” clip below:

Thicke’s fellow panelists seem to be on board with the guess, with Rita Ora even saying point blank “I love that!” Whether or not he is actually correct, well, we will just have to wait and see.

Rob Lowe reveals whether he'd return to 9-1-1 after Lone Star finale
Image
9-1-1: Lone Star has come to an end. The beloved first responder franchise went out with a bang, and now begins the long process of moving on. The fact that Lone Star is part of a larger franchise does provide a sliver of hope that its characters could live on in future spinoffs, though.

Naturally, the first character fans think of, with regard to spinoff plans, is protagonist Owen Strand. The character spearheaded Lone Star, and seems primed to move on to another setting and a new group of characters. If NCIS can do it, so can 9-1-1. Rob Lowe, the actor who plays Strand, talked about the possibility of returning during a recent TV Insider interview.

The huge question going into Fox’s 9-1-1: Lone Star season five episode 12 is will all the characters fans have grown to know and love survive. Could someone be killed off in episode 12, the series finale? Rob Lowe spoke to Entertainment Weekly about that possibility but didn’t give away any spoilers.

“Is there a world where Owen dies heroically? Does he live, does he not? And same for everybody else,” said Lowe. “This is a show where it’s totally organic on any given day that any one of these characters could have something really bad happen to them. I mean, that’s not pushed reality — it’s the reality of what first responders go through. So we were debating, ‘Do we want to push that button…...
