American Reunion is the fourth movie in the American Pie series. It was preceded by American Pie (1999) (1999), American Pie 2 (2001) (2001), and American Pie : Marions-les ! (2003) (2003) and four direct-to-DVD spin-offs—American Pie Présente : No Limit! (2005) (2005), American Pie présente: String Academy (2006) (2006), American pie présente Campus en folie (2007) (2007), and American Pie présente: Les sex commandements (2009) (2009). Characters were created by American screenwriter Adam Herz, who based them on his own high school experiences in East Grand Rapids, Michigan. The screenplay for American Reunion was written by American screenwriters John Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, both of whom also co-directed the movie.

Jim married Michelle (Alyson Hannigan) (in American Wedding), and they now have a two year old son Evan (George Christopher Bianchi), who is putting a crimp in their love life. Jim's mother died three years ago, and his father Noah (Eugene Levy) is still trying to cope with being single again. Kevin is married to Ellie (Charlene Amoia) and works as a home-based architect. Oz is a celebrity dancer and sportscaster living in Los Angeles with his supermodel girlfriend Mia (Katrina Bowden). Finch presents himself as a world traveler, having been adopted by an African tribe and biking through South America, still looking for his 'true love'.. Stifler is a temp for JBH Global, an investment firm where his boss, Mr Prateek Duraiswany (Vik Sahay), takes exquisite delight in belittling him.

For some reason, they missed having the normal 10-year reunion until MILF John (John Cho) takes it upon himself to organize a reunion at the 13th year.

Yes it is. Jason Biggs stated in an interview that it was 'about time' he showed his actual penis since it had been the focus of so many moments over the previous three movies, but never shown.

In the interview he said, "That was me. That was all me. It's funny, I guess I understand because there's all kinds of movie magic, but we made sure that there's a close up shot - and then we go to a wide shot. So that my face is in it with the penis," Biggs explained in an interview with The Huffington Post.

"You see a full shot so that it's clear, or more obvious, that it's my penis. I remember in early cuts I kept telling the directors, 'I have one note. You have to hold on to that shot longer so that people will know that's my penis. Otherwise, what's the point of me doing this?' The plain truth is, that's my penis."

Biggs also discussed the fact that audiences may soon become desensitised to male nudity and will stop finding it funny.

"You know, between There's Something About Mary and then Jason Segel - and, apparently, he's doing it again; he just loves flumping his penis, apparently - and now me and Michael Fassbender last year, yeah, I don't know. Pretty soon people will become desensitised to it. But I'm glad I'm catching it on the early side, so people still have a little bit of shock," he joked.

"The other thing is, even if people were like, 'Eh, penis, whatever', I think they'd still be shocked because it's Jim's penis. There's something about doing it with a character that people have sort of come to know and love over the years. And they've come so close - his penis has gotten lots of play over the years - but they've never actually seen it."

The day after the reunion, the guys meet at Dog Years for hotdogs. Jim asks Stifler who he ended up with after the dance, but Stifler refuses to say. They comment on how it's a shame that they'll all be returning home, and Oz says that he's going to take some time off and stick around to spend time with Heather (Mena Suvari). Finch announces that he and Selena (Dania Ramirez) are planning a 'jaunt' to Europe. Stifler warns Finch to be sure and call his mom (Rebecca De Mornay) because Rachel misses him. 'How would you know?' Finch asks, but Stifler just smiles, remembering the tryst he had with Rachel on the lacrosse field. As they make plans to get together again next year, Jim's dad and Stifler's mom (Jennifer Coolidge) walk arm-in-arm into Dog Years.

Not after, but just as the credits begin to roll, there is a short scene showing Noah and Stifler's mom eating popcorn together at the movies. Encouraged by a young couple in front of them, Noah puts his arm around Stifler's mom. She gets a pleased look on her face and snuggles closer to him then suddenly hands him the bucket of popcorn and goes down on the floor. Noah starts to say, "No...no...," but his noes quickly turn into moans of pleasure as the popcorn starts bobbling up and down. After a sigh of relief, he looks around to see everyone looking at him. "Great movie!", he says.

In the eight years since American Reunion was released, there has been plenty of talk and discussion about a fifth installment to the original series. Despite a script being completed in 2012, eagerness from the cast members to return and even the passing of the 20th anniversary of the original movie, there has been zero action. Instead, Universal Pictures announced the fifth installment to the direct-to-video spin-off series, American Pie Presents: Girls' Rules. The movie does not feature any returning cast members from the original series or the spin-off series and is expected to be released in 2020.

It was announced early on that there would be an Unrated version for home cinemas. Unlike other movies, the Unrated version was released on both DVD and Blu-ray disc. The Unrated version is quite typical for the genre. You get a few more dialogue and an extension of Ali Cobrin's naked scenes. The Unrated version includes 4 scenes with alternative material and 4 scenes with additional material. Overall, the Unrated version is approximately 63 seconds longer than the theatrical version.
