Everyone loves Sean Bean. Passionately beloved for his portrayal of Ned Stark in the first season of Game of Thrones, Boromir in J.R.R. British actress Shivaani Ghai (Dominion) is set for a major recurring role on the second season of the CW’s Batwoman. She will join new lead Javicia Leslie in the superhero series when it returns in January.

Ghai will play Safiyah, the fiercely protective ruler of a small community on the island of Coryana. A woman with as many enemies as aliases, she is compassionate and charismatic with both physical and psychological prowess. She is beloved by her people and will stop at nothing to protect what’s hers. No one goes unnoticed by Safiyah, specifically when it comes to those who have encountered the Desert Rose.

As previously announced, Leslie will play new character Ryan Wilder who is about to become Batwoman, succeeding Ruby Rose’s Kate Kane. Batwoman premiered last fall as the first superhero series in television history to feature an avowed LGBTQ character as the central character.

Everyone remembers the best among the scrappy 1980s films that started American “indie film” in earnest — particularly those over-stylized, wink-wink comedies by Jim Jarmusch, Susan Seidelman, Alexandre Rockwell, and so on that were among the movement’s most influential early successes. Similarly, few could forget how much fun “Reservoir Dogs” and “Pulp Fiction” were, revitalizing the crime-caper genre with wit and outsized directorial personality.

What we’d prefer to forget is just how many labored comedy quirkfests and effortfully wiseass capers the above films “inspired” for years afterward — wannabe movies straining for the same qualities without any original inspiration, failing to find their own voice while deliberately or unconsciously mimicking somebody else’s. The majority of these pale imitations wound up a blip on the Sundance Festival radar — if they were lucky — then were forgotten ever after.

Peter Ferdinando has joined Sam Rockwell and Phoebe Fox in Blue Iguana, a black comedy from writer-director Hadi Hajaig.

The British actor is known for Gerard Johnson’s Tony (2009) and Hyena (2014), and also appeared in Ben Wheatley’s A Field In England (2013) and High-Rise (2015) as well as David Mackenzie’s Starred Up (2013).

Phoebe Fox has joined Sam Rockwell in Blue Iguana, a comedy from writer-director Hadi Hajaig, who last directed Charlotte Rampling-Sean Bean thriller Cleanskin in 2012.

The project, which will be financed by UK Film Studio Productions, will start principal photography in London this month.

Hajaig also produces with 3 Arts Entertainment’s Tom Lassally, who is also working on the Edge of Tomorrow sequel at Warner Bros.

Ben Schwartz is prolific. Best known for his work as an actor, in projects such as House Of Lies, BoJack Horseman, Parks And Recreation, and Turbo, he is also a writer (Robot Chicken, The Oscars), a producer (Funny Or Die Presents…, Bronx World Travellers), and director (CollegeHumor Originals). He is also the proud owner of a Primetime Emmy Award for writing music and lyrics for the 81st Annual Academy Awards. But now, he has really hit the big time, because he’s about to star in Blue Iguana with Sam Rockwell.

Soon to be written, directed and produced by Hadi Hajaig (Cleanskin), Blue Iguana is characterized as a dark comedy thriller that’s also a love story. Plot details remain scarce, but the synopsis, as outlined on IMDb, gives some indication of what to expect.

“He’s a low level criminal with no future and just out of prison. She’s a low level lawyer never noticed by others – a lost soul without a life. Their anger and hostility makes them serious criminals. Love happens in the strangest of places.”

Blue Iguana happens in London shortly, and has Sam Rockwell locked in for the lead role – the “low level criminal with no future.” The nature of the role now associated with Ben Schwartz is not currently known, but it is probably a safe bet that he will be playing something akin to “Best Friend No 1.”

If his friendship is with Sam Rockwell, this promises some excellent comedy, as the respective style of the two actors certainly would seem to complement each other – Rockwell with his laid back, mildly irritated delivery, and Ben Schwartz with his trademark self-assured swagger.

The big question is, who will play the “low level lawyer never noticed by others?” This is the key role at this point, as the actress concerned will need to go toe-to-toe with the comedic skill of both Rockwell and Schwartz. My first choice would be Kathryn Hahn – simply because she would be able to play anger and hostility opposite Sam Rockwell with hilarious conviction. Alternatively, I think it’s about time Charlyne Yi got a shot at a lead role. Her measured delivery and deadpan comedy style would serve this role, and this cast, well. Whichever actress lands the part, we should hear the announcement soon, as cameras are set to roll on Blue Iguana in July.

Yes they’re still calling it a pilot, but at least Syfy is issuing press releases about the Dominion project in development. Hopefully now that they have the major casting out of the way, they can get going on this and we’ll be hearing that it’s great and that it’s green-lit for a series run.

Tuppence Middleton has said that Danny Boyle has "perfected the art of directing". The Tormented and Cleanskin actress stars in Boyle's upcoming movie Trance, which started production before last year's London Olympics Opening Ceremony. As Halloween fast approaches it’s that time of year again when filmmakers see the annual occasion as an excuse to release their latest horror flick, as more often than not, we are subject to lacklustre, unoriginal movies that are about as scary as a packet of mints. Neither as authentic as it needs to be, nor as clumsy and hackneyed as it could have been, this low-budget British thriller instead calls forth indifference and apathy from the viewer, who struggles to connect with the regrettably thinly drawn characters. Sean Bean’s Ewan remains taciturn and solemn throughout, which given the little back story we are told is understandable, but his natural charisma winds up buried beneath all of the dourness and prevents us from being affected by his story.

★☆☆☆☆ The problem with making a counter-terrorism film in a world that has already experienced Jack Bauer is that, in its eight seasons, 24 covered almost every single angle and plot twist that one could imagine for the sub-genre. So when Sean Bean's grizzled and damaged ex-soldier is employed by a murky government agency to go off grid and dispose of some would-be suicide bombers in British thriller Cleanskin (2012), you can't help but bring to mind CTU's main man.

After the release of one of the highest-grossing British films in recent years last week with The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, we’ve got an entirely different selection lining the shelves this week with John Carter, one of the year’s biggest blockbusters, now available for your home entertainment.

And beside it, a critically acclaimed new Us series, Falling Skies, produced by none other than Steven Spielberg, which aired in the States last summer.

By definition “cleanskin” is the name given to a terrorist that is unknown, does not have a history that shows them to be a threat. If anything this makes them the perfect person to enact an attack. The film Cleanskin is a look at this type of person who is planning an attack, while we also see the viewpoint of the people trying to stop them.

After failing on an undercover mission to stop explosives getting into the wrong hands Ewan a secret service agent finds it his task to discover who stole it and to stop them using it for suicide bombings. In the different perspective we see the manipulation of Ash, a man disillusioned by the life in the United Kingdom where he is branded just for his beliefs and his perceived nationality.

The British action thriller Cleanskin explodes onto Blu-ray. Triple Play, DVD and UltraViolet digital download on July 2 with an exciting cast led by Sean Bean, who plays Ewan, a Secret Service agent working undercover in the criminal underbelly of London. It enjoys a measly 7% Fresh rating at Rotten Tomatoes, and scored 18/100 at Metacritic. When it opened in the Us, it suffered the rare ignominy of being rated F by film fans measured by market research firm CinemaScore. In the UK, it avoided the slings and arrows of newspaper critics by the simple expedient of not screening to them until the day of release. But none of this mattered too much at the box office, with exorcism horror The Devil Inside (rumoured production budget: £630,000) dethroning John Carter (rumoured production budget: £158m) from the chart summit. With a decent £1.99m opening, this was enough to land it more than £400,000 ahead of action comedy 21 Jump Street.

Despite suffering bad buzz over budget overruns, an epic production process and a name change, Disney was able to trumpet a UK No 1 opening for its sci-fi blockbuster John Carter, with a gross of just under £2m. That's probably not the number Disney envisioned 26 months ago when shooting started on this pricey Edgar Rice Burroughs adaptation with Pixar's Andrew Stanton at the helm, but it could have been worse. John Carter lost the box-office war to The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel on Friday, and was still behind after Saturday, but was a convincing winner on Sunday. John Carter's opening number compares with £2.47m for Green Lantern last June – viewed as a flop that stopped a potential franchise in its tracks.

Rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars

It’s all in the edit they say, and having taken on the roles of writer, director, and producer, perhaps Hadi Hajaig, the man behind terrorism thriller Cleanskin, should have handed the reins of editor to someone else. Because buried within the somewhat messy cut we’re presented with is a more cohesive, and ultimately clearer film waiting to escape.

There are numerous illogical leaps and sequential mis-steps that create a mood of unreality at the very points that the story is trying to impress us with it’s hard-edged grit, and the inconsistent pacing from gratifyingly effective action to flashbacks that would try the patience of Basil Exposition leave you ultimately either questioning the story-tellers nous, or even more damning, wondering when the story’s going to end.

John Carter (12A)

(Andrew Stanton, 2012, Us) Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Mark Strong, Dominic West, Samantha Morton, Ciarán Hinds. 132 mins

Despite the technological might of Pixar, this Martian epic still feels closer to retro fare such as Flash Gordon or Dune. It's a cumbersome hero's journey fully of silly names, skimpy costumes and princesses in peril – stuff we've seen recycled so many times since Edgar Rice Burroughs first wrote this, it now feels laughably quaint. Still, it's always fun to see an expensively rendered alien world, even if cheesy myth-making comes with the territory.

Hardy's Tess looks a comfortable fit with modern-day India in this naturalistic drama, which takes liberties with the text but finds new resonances, as Pinto's subdued villager struggles to find happiness with a wealthy young British-Indian.

It was a fairly comedy-centric offering last week at the multiplexes but this coming week is a wholly more eclectic affair. This weeks’ releases are set in such diverse locals as gritty English council estates, Parisian high society, the sweltering heat of India and, well, Mars. Are any of them worth your hard-earned cash at the cinema’s though? There looks to be something for just about everybody so make your selection wisely. Little update from last week’s offerings too, Wanderlust was pretty enjoyable and worth a watch if you like Apatow comedies. Project X however was truly terrible. I recommend you all avoid it like the plague.

Following his 2006 feature debut, Puritan, director Hadi Hajaig has turned to the murky and duplicitous world of 21st century terrorism with his London set thriller Cleanskin, released in UK cinemas from tomorrow (Friday).

An independently financed film, it has been picked up for distribution by Warner Brothers, which meant a suitably packed junket at the Mayfair Hotel (also featured in the film), and the usual slight delays when faced with wrangling a bunch of journos.

Initially set to chat only with Sean Bean, starring as darkly motivated government agent Ewan, and Abhin Galeya as his nemesis Ash, we also managed to get a sit down with Hadi himself to discuss the ins and outs of story, character, motivation, and Miami Blues.

This actually ended up being the second time I would interview Sean Bean about the movie as I visited the set of the film during production last year and...

When film historians look back at the last decade in British cinema, the genre (and it seems to be one) of ‘low-budget action-thriller’ is unlikely to be well regarded. Generally a synonym for ‘badly written gangster flick’, the usual formula for such movies is to combine former Eastenders cast members, with lots of swearing, a few guns and less tension than a children’s birthday party.

Of course, there are always exceptions to this, and Cleanskin is certainly one. Tense, intelligent and with well developed characters, it shows just what can be done with a shoestring budget and a talented writer.

Earlier this week we headed down to Mayfair for the film’s premiere, where we spoke to the cast and director about the controversial subject matter, the potential audience reaction and the attraction of smaller budget British features.

I don’t like what McG stands for and consequently I hate This Means War. Throughout this article that may become tediously clear. The film is rubbish and in a box-office that this week has been buoyed to a long overdue comparative high I regret that a large chuck of that success is constituted by the aforementioned pile of arse that is This Means War.

In other less self-indulgently negative news The Woman in Black has nipped out of the top spot down to second. Bested by the power of the grey pound it has been beaten by last week’s runner-up The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.

The new releases on the other hand fared badly. Apart form This Means War. That fared all too well.

The daily routine of an Austrian paedophile who keeps a young boy locked in his cellar was hardly something anyone was queuing up to see, but this challenges us, and itself, to take a look. At the same time, it thankfully averts its gaze from scenes of actual abuse. There are keen observations on parenting, privacy, power relations and more, but the flat, factual approach verges on dull, and the absence of empathy ultimately just leaves you feeling grubby. So get in line for the grimmest movie of the year!

CleanSkin is the name given to a type of terrorist who works alone, without connections to overseas organisations. By a vaguely similar token, CleanSkin the movie is an action thriller drama made by UK independent filmmakers without the big money financing of overseas producers. Hot on the heels of the clip that we put up last week, Digital Spy have just released the first five minutes if Sean Bean’s new movie, Cleanskin which hits cinemas next Friday 9th March. It seems to be becoming the norm for studios to release large chunks of a movie to reel you into you local multiplex to see more of the movie that you’re hopefully enjoying in small segments. It will of course be a shame if the first five minutes are the best bit. Take Meet Joe Black for example!

Arriving in cinemas on March 9th is the new Sean Bean movie, Cleanskin. In it, Bean plays a secret service agent on the tail of a suicide bomber. It's a British action thriller, and you can get a taster of it here, in this exclusive clip.

There's no Bean in the scene below, sadly, but there is a fight, and there is a barn, which is 19th century if we're not mistaken.
