Star Trek: The Next Generation - Season One [Blu-ray] As far as "Star Trek" is concerned, I'm a big fan of the original series and the films spawned from those characters. I was never a fan of "The Next Generation". However, Paramount did send me a Blu-ray copy of this first season of "The Next Generation" and I am hoping to give a few episodes a watch this weekend and perhaps have a change of heart. Just as they did with the original series, this series has been remastered and contains updated effects. I loved what they did with the original series and I hope I can get just as excited about this one.

Having spent the last year sat in screening rooms and cinemas watching over 200 of 2011′s cinematic offerings, it stands to reason that I’m going to have to sit through a fair share of duds. As I had seen the vast majority of the key Oscar plays before November, I spent the latter part of the year dedicating myself to seeking out the worst, most lowest common denominator fare ripe for a skewering, and with these twenty dreadful pictures, we have what are, in my opinion, the 20 biggest train wrecks of 2011. Note that Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star is still awaiting worldwide DVD release and didn’t get distribution in the U.K., so that’s one that I was forced to avoid, but I’m assured that it’s irredeemably horrible nevertheless. Saturday night marks the U.S. premiere on the Syfy channel of a film previously released in the U.K. starring Danny Glover. Age of the Dragons is a reimaging of the story of Captain Ahab and Moby Dick. Danny plays a version of the great tragic sea captain set in a mythical time, but rather than pursuing a whale he is chasing a dragon. In a recent conference call interview the Lethal Weapon actor revealed that although the era and the physical beast are different, the emotional beast is the same.

Danny explained how he became involved with the project, "They came to me. I read the script and an actor likes to work and an actor likes to feel that he's capable of needing the test of many challenges."

He recalled that the character of Ahab intrigued him, "[He's] kind of deformed, mad. [He] was not only deformed physically,...

I recently got the chance to have a quick chat with Hollywood veteran actor Danny Glover (2012, Lethal Weapon) about his recent role in the SyFy original movie Age of Dragons, a bold retelling of the Herman Melville novel “Moby Dick”.

Aaron M.K.: In the movie [Age of Dragons] the writer’s saw fit to give an explanation as to why your character Captain Ahab was chasing his ‘white whale’, the dragon, in the form of flashbacks. This is somewhat in contrast to the original telling of the tale in which Herman Melville never gave the reader a reason for Ahab’s incessant lust for revenge. Do you feel that these flashbacks helped the movie-goer connect with Captain Ahab on an emotional level, perhaps shedding a whole new light on the old classic?

Danny Glover: Well, I would think so. Often human behavior is demystified through knowing something about what a person has been through.

It’s that time of the year when TV stations preview their upcoming season slates; I’ll be attending Bet’s showcase this Wednesday, here in New York, so, you’ll get my first-hand reactions to whatever is thrown at me.

For now, however, I just learned that the Syfy Channel has apparently acquired stateside rights to a film called Age Of The Dragons, a film I’ve highlighted on this site previously. It’s essentially a re-imagining of Herman Melville’s classic novel Moby Dick, starring, in an unexpected, if inspired casting, Danny Glover as the tyrannical Ahab. Vinnie Jones and Sean Astin also co-star.

My last post on the flick announced the UK DVD release, and, at the time, there was no sign that it would make its way to the states. Well, now it is, and most of you will get to see it… assuming you’re interested.

Syfy sent out a press release announcing its summer programming slate, and in addition to popular returning series "Eureka" (July 11th), "Warehouse 13" (July 11th), "Ghost Hunters International" (July 13th), and "Haven" (July 15th), some new blood is on tap.

The line-up includes a pair of new reality shows, a new superhero program, a live-action movie based on the popular Red Faction video game, and you just knew there had to be at least one new killer shark movie included in there somewhere.

I'm feeling lazy so I'll let the press release tell you the story.

TNT’s compassionate criminals are getting some auspicious company in their upcoming 4th season. Veteran actor Danny Glover will appear in the fifth episode of Leverage season 4, currently scheduled for a July airing.

For those unfamiliar with Leverage, think of it as Ocean’s 11 meets Robin Hood. A gang of former super-thieves and merry con men band together to fight corporations and criminals pro bono for their wronged clients. Timothy Hutton (Ordinary People) highlights an ensemble cast.

The fantasy genre is certainly a ripe one to mock, what with its cynical homogeneity as evidenced in appalling duds like the recent Season of the Witch and Age of the Dragons. Furthermore, the great cast and talented director comprising Your Highness suggests a smart, silly take on the staid genre, combining a cheeky stoner sensibility with a giddily self-aware tone. The result, disappointingly, is less subversive than you’d expect, instead more a soulless mixture of foul language, uninvolving action and a more faithful reverence to genre tropes than is ever needed or wanted.

Your Highness is a textbook example of how to squander a promising concept alongside a great cast, for it consists of little more than several one-note gags strung out to feature length. It's no wonder so many of us have grown up geeky, for dragons have been a strong mainstay of children's movies for decades now. With their inextricable link to the fantasy genre, many of us have been brainwashed into a fixation with them before we even knew what was happening. Well, that's a decent enough excuse, anyway, should you ever find yourself needing one in a dragon-based argument, which I'm sure there aren't nearly enough of.

Pity the children growing up from the mid-nineties onwards, as they've barely been able to make it through one whole year without a dragon movie being released, a trend which sees no sign of slowing. This year has already seen the release of Age Of The Dragons, starring Danny Glover and Vinnie Jones...

A great opportunity to compare and contrast two films by the same director, Roy Andersson, that have little in common other than their exceedingly high quality. Andersson garnered international attention with his first film, 1970's A Swedish Love Story, a gorgeous tale of teenage romance that manges to be both realistic and lyrical. He looked set to become a major player but instead, following the lack of control he was afforded on his follow-up, descended into depression and stepped back from feature film-making. Fast-forward to the year 2000 and Andersson made a bold return with Songs, a film that just couldn't be more different, in style, outlook, humour, everything … Songs is told entirely in vignettes that unfold before an unmoving camera, whose static framing allows for humorous images like a corridor of office workers peering through cracked doorways at a colleague's sacking.

With her debut, Unrelated, Hogg proved herself to be just about the only film-maker out there seeking to depict Britain's middle classes in a way they wouldn't necessarily enjoy. This brave follow-up is even more uncomfortable and less narrative-driven, as a well-to-do family's get-together in the Scilly Isles turns into a slow, sparse drip of resentments, silences, joyless activities and blithe snobbery. It's uncomfortable in a good way.

A couple of weeks ago we gave you an early look [1] at Danny Glover as Captain Ahab in Age of the Dragons (previously titled Dragon Fire), the low-budget reimagining of Herman Melville's Moby Dick which sees the titular white whale replaced with a white dragon. Now there's an international trailer for the film, which also stars Vinnie Jones. Watch it after the break. I'm not gonna lie, the movie looks pretty bad. It may share the same basic narrative with the revered literary classic, but it doesn't carry with it any of the same sophistication, nor does it intend to. To quote the film's own executive producer, "It’s Moby Dick with way more excitement, way more action." That quote is probably best read with several exclamation marks tagged on the end of it. Age Of The Dragons had the potential to be gloriously trashy. A reimagining of Moby Dick but with dragons instead of the titular white whale, and starring Danny Glover, this has got “Cult Classic” written all over it. Unfortunately, it’s just as bad as it sounds but not bad enough to be ironically enjoyable.

The story will be familiar to anyone that’s read or seen the source material. Whaler (or in this case Dragon Hunter) Ishmael (Corey Sevier) and his companion Queequeg (Kepa Kruse) board the ship Peaquod (this time a mobile fort on wheels) run by the enigmatic Captain Ahab (Danny Glover), a figure shrouded in legend after a white dragon killed his sister and left him disfigured. I first stumbled upon this trailer for Age of the Dragons on YouTube over a week ago but failed to write anything up about it because I noticed it was uploaded over two months ago and assumed we had already reported on it. That should give you an idea of just how under the radar this Moby Dick with dragons flick starring Danny Glover has been.

When we last reported on Age of the Dragons back in March, the title was Dragon Fire and next to nothing was known about it other than it being a $5 million take on Moby Dick shooting in Utah under the direction of Ryan Little (Forever Strong, House of Fears). Substituting a great white dragon for the infamous whale of Herman Melville's classic tale, a scarfaced Danny Glover stars as the obsessed Ahab, Vinnie Jones co-stars as Stubbs and call Corey Sevier (Decoys 2, House of Fears) Ishmael.

Remember that story last week about a project titled 2010: Moby Dick about the re-telling of the story with Captain Ahab and a high tech submarine? This is the complete opposite.

Instead of going high-tech, director Ryan Little and crew have reworked the classic story to hunt dragons rather than a whale. Age of the Dragons (originally known as Dragon Fire) is described as follows:

In a medieval realm where Captain Ahab and crew hunt dragons for the vitriol that powers their world, Ishmael, a charismatic harpooner, joins their quest. Ahab’s adopted daughter Rachel, beautiful and tough, runs the hunting vessel. Ahab’s obsession to seek revenge on a great “White Dragon” that slaughtered his family when he was young and left his body scarred and mauled drives the crew deeper into the heart of darkness. In the White Dragon’s lair, Ahab’s secrets are revealed and Rachel...

He's killed a Predator, been murdered by Jigsaw, and spent considerable time being too old for this shit with Mel Gibson; now Danny Glover is taking on the Captain Ahab role and hunting a great white dragon in Dragon Fire, a fantasy reworking of the classic tale of Moby Dick.

The $5 million Herman Melville-inspired dragon flick shooting on location in Utah is being directed by Ryan Little (Forever Strong, House of Fears). As if dragons weren't ferocious enough, Vinnie Jones co-stars as Stubbs. Call Corey Sevier (Decoys 2, House of Fears) Ishmael. A possible limited theatrical release could be in the works for the fall.

There are films that present an interesting and off-kilter take on a classic tale (i.e. O Brother, Where Art Thou? and The Odyssey). And then there are films like this…

Dragon Fire, a futuristic reimagining of Herman Melville’s great American novel, stars Vinnie Jones as Stubb and Danny Glover as Captain Ahab hunting not a large white whale, but a large white dragon! Now, you could make the claim that we hold personal bias towards anything whale-related, but this seems just plain silly.

Earlier this month I mentioned in a brief casting note that Danny Glover had been cast in Dragon Fire, a low-budget reworking of Moby Dick that would shoot in Utah, with a white dragon standing in for the more traditional white whale. Glover is Captain Ahab, and Vinnie Jones is in the film not as Queequeg (come on, that would be funny) but as Stubb. Now we've got a video report from the set of the film, complete with a bit of footage of Glover in action. This TV report from the film's set is fairly entertaining, in part because regional TV reports about filmmaking are often funny.
