Four years after Schitt’s Creek’s series finale, the show’s Rosebuds — father Eugene and son Dan Levy — will reunite on screen as hosts for ABC’s airing of the primetime Emmys at 8 p.m. on Sept. 15. The ceremony will take place at the Peacock Theater at L.A. Live.

The Television Academy and ABC have selected Eugene and Dan Levy to serve as hosts for the 76th Emmy Awards ceremony in September 2024. Eugene and Dan Levy, known for creating and starring in the hit sitcom “Schitt’s Creek,” will become the first father-son duo to jointly host the prestigious award show. The ceremony will take place on September 15, 2024 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles and air live on ABC.

Eugene and Dan expressed excitement about hosting the Emmys together in a joint statement. “As Canadians who accepted our Emmy awards during the pandemic, being asked to host the ceremony in an actual theater is very motivating,” they said. They look forward to toasting the outstanding television of the past year with the audience.

The selection comes after the Levys’ historic wins at the 2020 Emmy Awards, where they made history as the first father-son hosts to receive awards in the same year.

With less than a month to go before the 76th Emmy Awards, the telecast’s hosts are finally set. As expected, the father-son duo of Eugene Levy and Dan Levy will emcee this year’s Emmys, which take place on Sunday, Sept. 15, live on ABC.

The two made history in 2020 as the first father and son to win major awards in the same year, thanks to “Schitt’s Creek.” That year — in which winners appeared remotely, due to the Covid-19 pandemic — saw Eugene Levy win for outstanding comedy actor and Dan Levy win for supporting comedy actor. Dan Levy also picked up wins for writing and directing, while both won the outstanding comedy series Emmy as exec producers.

“For two Canadians who won our Emmys in a literal quarantine tent, the idea of being asked to host this year in an actual theater was incentive enough,” the Levys said in a joint statement.

Emmy-winning director Peter Atencio is set to direct the R-rated road trip adventure from writing duo Kevin Burrows and Matt Mider. The logline is currently being kept under wraps.

Since 2003, the Best Competition Program Emmy has been awarded annually in recognition of reality entertainment structured around talent or endurance contests. This year, there are 59 such options for TV academy members to choose from on their first-round nominations ballots, which means there will be five nominees announced on July 12. This is down from 81 entrants in 2022 and 67 in 2021.

All 20,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 26 to cast their 2023 Emmy Awards nominations ballots for their favorite competition programs. Exclusive: Andrew Renzi, director of Netflix docuseries Pepsi, Where’s My Jet?, is reuniting with Boardwalk Pictures.

Renzi and his North of Now production company have signed a multi-year overall deal with the company, which is behind series such as Chef’s Table, Cheer and Welcome to Wrexham and worked with Renzi on the Netflix series that told the story of two mountaineers who took on Pepsi in the ‘90s in a David and Goliath advertising battle.

It is Boardwalk’s latest overall deal, having recently struck an overall pact with with W. Kamau Bell’s recently launched Wkb Productions. It comes after Deadline revealed that Boardwalk has sold a minority interest to investment firm Shamrock Capital.

Renzi will work with Boardwalk to create non-fiction films and TV shows. It is a further expansion of Boardwalk Studios, which is led by Jordan Wynn, and is also behind premium docs such as Val.

The Critics Choice Association unveiled the winners of the fifth annual Critics Choice Real TV Awards.

The awards recognize excellence in nonfiction, unscripted, and reality programming across broadcast, cable, and streaming platforms.

This year’s Critics Choice Real TV Awards honored shows “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars,” “Top Chef,” and “Taste the Nation with Padma Lakshmi,” with each series taking home two awards.

All three shows won in the Best Show Host category, as RuPaul tied with Padma Lakshmi for both “Taste the Nation” and “Top Chef.” “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars” took home the award for best ensemble cast in an unscripted series, while “Taste the Nation with Padma Lakshmi” was awarded best structured series and “Top Chef” won best culinary show.

The annual event continues to recognize excellence in nonfiction, unscripted and reality programming across broadcast, cable and streaming platforms.

Lisa Vanderpump was honored with the Impact Award this year and Eugene Levy won Star of the Year. Additionally, Bravo and Netflix were the biggest winners of awards, topping four categories each.

The Critics Choice Association revealed the winners of the fifth annual Critics Choice Real TV Awards, which recognize excellence in nonfiction, unscripted and reality programming.

RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars, Taste the Nation With Padma Lakshmi and Top Chef tied with two awards each. Drag Race won the award for best ensemble cast in an unscripted series, Taste the Nation won best structured series, and Top Chef won best culinary show. RuPaul and Lakshmi tied in the best show host category, which went to the three aforementioned shows. On the heels of winning a Peabody Award for the Showtime docuseries “We Need to Talk About Cosby,” W. Kamau Bell has launched a new production company, Who Knows Best, and inked an overall deal with Boardwalk Pictures.

Bell, an Emmy-winning producer, director, host and comedian, founded Who Knows Best Productions (Wkb), an Oakland-based company, with the mission of “fostering a diverse creative community and telling revolutionary non-fiction stories by any medium necessary.”

Wkb launches with a multi-year overall deal with Boardwalk Pictures after the parties partnered on the critically acclaimed four-part documentary “We Need to Talk About Cosby.”

“I’m super excited for the opportunity to highlight stories and talent from the Bay Area — and specifically Oakland — alongside a powerhouse production company like Boardwalk Pictures,” stated Bell, a Bay Area resident for more than 20 years, announcing the deal.

"Schitt's Creek" ended its six-season run in April 2020, and ever since then, fans have been wondering if there might be a spinoff movie in the future. After all, other shows (such as "Downton Abbey") have returned with movie follow-ups after their official finales - and it seems like some of the stars of "Schitt's Creek" are definitely open to continuing the story. In a Feb. 24 feature in RadioTimes, star Eugene Levy said that he'd still love to make something happen.

"We'd love to get together with these people again and take the show and the characters to yet another level," the 76-year-old actor said. "There's nothing in the works right now to be honest, but you know, we've never stopped thinking about what might happen down the line. We're certainly open to anything. I think when the idea that is the right idea presents itself, we'll probably act on [it]."

Boardwalk Pictures, the docuseries label behind Chef’s Table on Netflix and Welcome to Wrexham on FX/Hulu, has sold a minority stake to private equity firm Shamrock Capital, the producer said Feb. 15. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.

The Santa Monica-based unscripted producer, led by CEO-founder Andrew Fried, said it secured a growth investment from Shamrock with an eye toward broadening its output as a seller of content to networks and streaming platforms as well as build out its staff working on projects.

Exclusive: The non-fiction space is heating up in terms of M&a as Boardwalk Pictures, the company behind long-running Netflix series such as Chef’s Table and Last Chance U, has struck a deal to sell a minority stake.

The company, founded by Andrew Fried, has sold a stake to investment firm Shamrock Capital. No one is commenting, but we understand that the deal is in the nine-figure range.

The move is the latest big-ticket deal in the booming non-fiction space and follows deals such as Sony Pictures Television’s 350M acquisition of Industrial Media, Peter Chernin’s North Road Company’s 200M purchase of Red Arrow Studios, Fremantle’s acquisitive streak including companies such as 72 Films, and ITV Studio’s 126M deal for Plimsoll Productions.

Nominees have been announced for the 34th Annual Glaad Media Awards, recognizing fair, accurate and inclusive representations of LGBTQ people and issues. Netflix topped the list of all outlets by picking up 21 nominations, followed by ABC with 11, HBO Max with 10, and Hulu with nine.

Winners will be announced during the GLAAD Media Awards ceremonies taking place in Los Angeles at the Beverly Hilton on Thursday, March 30, 2023, and in New York City at the Hilton Midtown on Saturday, May 13, 2023.

GLAAD is gearing up to give out some trophies.

The organization has revealed nominations for the 34th annual GLAAD Media Awards, a roster that features high-profile awards season contenders like Tár, A Man Called Otto, Everything Everywhere All at Once and The Inspection; acclaimed series like The White Lotus, Abbott Elementary, Hacks, Harley Quinn, Only Murders in the Building and What We Do in the Shadows; and buzzy music stars Kim Petras, Omar Apollo, Orville Peck, Steve Lacy, Dove Cameron and Anitta.

The awards, created to “honor media for fair, accurate and inclusive representations of LGBTQ people and issues,” will be doled out during a pair of ceremonies, first in Los Angeles at the Beverly Hilton on March 30 and later in New York City at Hilton Midtown on May 13. The awards are presented by Gilead Sciences, Inc. and Ketel One Family Made Vodka.

By the time Daniel, J., and Danielle made it to The Big Brunch finale, the three chefs had determined how they would use the 300,000 to expand their respective businesses.

The Directors Guild of America announced the nominees for television, commercials and documentary for its 75th annual DGA Awards today, a list headed by previous winners Ben Stiller and Vince Gilligan, three-time nominee Jason Bateman and Tim Burton, who shockingly hadn’t previously been nominated by the DGA.

According to the logline, the series is a “satirical look into the lives of a group of eternally bound, disgruntled guardian angels and the lessons they’ll eventually learn from not only the dysfunctional humans they’re in charge of protecting, but also each other.” Levy, David Tennant, Natalie Palamides, Glenn Close, Poppy Liu, Samira Wiley will star.

When Warner Bros. merged with Discovery in 2022, the restructuring led to a massive purge of original content from HBO Max that is no longer available for viewing. This has led to widespread confusion about which shows can be viewed on HBO Max, including a slew of original reality TV content that fell by the wayside.

At the same time, several reality TV shows have been added to HBO Max to make way for Discovery's library, further adding to the lack of clarity. But not all hope is lost. In fact, there are still many extremely amusing reality TV shows on HBO Max, be they cooking competitions, dating shows, sporting events or something a bit harder to categorize.

Created and co-hosted by Schitt's Creek star Dan Levy, The Big Brunch is a fun cooking competition series that leans into the heartfelt human side of the contestants over the cut-throat culinary battles.

The reality series, which was created by Issa Rae, is the third unscripted series to get the axe at the streamer this week. First, as exclusively reported by Variety, was Elan Gale’s fan-favorite “FBoy Island” on Monday, followed by voguing competition series “Legendary” on Tuesday. Those shows ran for two and three seasons, respectively.

Named after the 2012 Frank Ocean song “Sweet Life,” the series followed a friend group of Black 20-somethings through their career and personal pursuits while living in South L.A. Season 1 debuted in 2021, while Season 2 came in 2022. Cast members included Amanda Scott, Briana Jones, Cheryl Des Vignes, Jerrold Smith II, Jordan Bentley, P’Jae Compton, Tylynn Burns, Rebecca Magett, Rob Lee and Jaylenn Hart.

Hosted by Nikki Glaser, the series followed three women as they chose a potential boyfriend from a pool of 24 men by trying to identify which contestants were “f-boys,” who were there only to have a good time, and which were “nice guys” genuinely searching for love.

The cancellation doesn’t come as a shock. The status of much of HBO Max’s programming has appeared to be up in the air since the closing of the Warner Bros. Discovery merger in April. A cooking competition that tasks chefs with making brunch — the No. 1 most dreaded meal in most professional kitchens — at first sounds like a recipe for Sisyphean pain. In the hands of “Schitt’s Creek” co-creator Dan Levy, however, “The Big Brunch” immediately establishes itself as the total opposite of that bleak picture, with its emphasis on congeniality and warmth above all else. Leaning on the latter-day “Schitt’s” ideals of staying true to oneself, this gentle twist on a “Top Chef” formula doesn’t exactly bring the drama — but for those craving something with less bite, “The Big Brunch” should prove harder to resist than that one last mimosa.

After starring in shows for Showtime and Apple TV+, Claire Danes is now making her way to HBO Max: The Homeland vet has joined the streamer’s limited series Full Circle, executive-produced and directed by Steven Soderbergh (The Girlfriend Experience), our sister site Variety reports.

The six-episode project, which also stars Zazie Beetz (Atlanta), “follows an investigation into a botched kidnapping that uncovers long-held secrets connecting multiple characters and cultures in present day New York City.” Details about Danes’ character are not currently available.
