Cinéma-vérité style found footage flicks are all the rage lately thanks to their low production costs and usually profitable returns. Combine this with the resurgence of alien flicks and you've got box office gold, right? At least that's what the people pumping things out are hoping for.
Our brothers in harm over at Bloody Disgusting are reporting that Matty Beckerman, executive producer of The Experiment and Isolation, is getting behind the camera for his directorial debut.
Currently untitled, the horror flick will be a found footage experience about aliens. Penned by Robert Alvin Lewis, the big news is that it is being produced by none other than Mike Fleiss, the man behind Shark Night 3D, Hostel, Hostel: Part II, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)! Cathy Beckerman (Isolation, The Experiment) also produces.
The movie will follow the Johnsons on a road trip to Florida where they land in the middle of a hurricane.

They decide to take cover in North Carolina with relatives -- only on the way their navigation goes wonky. They end up in the deep backwoods of the Appalachian Mountains where they come face to face with malevolent alien creatures. The film will be the shocking final footage of the Johnson family vacation.

Gale Anne Hurd, CEO of Valhalla Motion Pictures, is looking to develop The Nameless, a spec script from writer Chris Billett.
Anne Hurd, Arsenal fun, said about the spec for her first move since the success of AMC’s zombie series The Walking Dead (2010):
I love that it’s character driven. That is very important to me. And secondly, I’m attracted to material about ordinary people who are facing extraordinary circumstances who find the strength within them to fight against impossible odds.”
The Nameless, defined as a modern day Western, is set in a high-threat environment operated by the U.S. Marshal’s Federal Witness Protection Program (Witsec), arranging new identities for approved applicants. After the area’s location has been compromised, more idealistic marshal confronted with town’s inhabitants against assassin squad determined to execute the government’s key witness to the crime in the approaching trial.

Prolific producer Gale Anne Hurd ( The Terminator , The Incredible Hulk ) is looking to develop a spec script from writer Chris Billett, says The Hollywood Reporter . The storyline, described as a modern day Western, is said to involve a secret Witness Protection Program facility that comes under attack by assassins and which must be defended by the citizens of the local town. The aim for the project is, at the moment, to go after independent funding through Hurd's Valhalla Pictures, though the producer doesn't entirely rule out studio involvement. Billett is responsible for the screenplays to the indie films Unrest , Callous and, most recently, Isolation . He is also, per his official site, developing a crime drama for television.

Al-Saadi Qaddafi, the 37-year-old son of Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi, has invested $100 million into a Los Angeles film production fund called Natural Selection, which will produce 20 films over the next five years. One of the first projects is "The Ice Man," which has Mickey Rourke in the lead. Another film being funded is "Isolation," a thriller starring Susan Sarandon's daughter, Eva Amurri. It is expected that Qaddafi won't have too much trouble in Hollywood despite having a connection to Muammar Qaddafi and Libya, which is in the middle of a revolt that has already left hundreds dead. Meanwhile, Qaddafi's other son, Saif Al-Islam, recently threatened that "rivers of blood" would flow unless the uprising ends.

Ever wonder where some films find their funding? An interesting bit of trivia was pointed out to me today that seemed relevant given the escalating madness occurring in Libya. At the start of this week, we showed you a trailer for Stephen Kay's upcoming thriller Isolation . The film was produced by the L.A.-based Natural Selection, the outfit behind the Adrien Brody-starring The Experiment . Natural Selection is financed by Al-Saadi Qadhafi, son of Libyan President Moammar Gadhafi. A former football player, kicked out of the sport for steroid use, Al-Saadi dropped $100 million into Natural Selection, which was founded by Matty Beckerman. Another project on Natural Selection's plate: The Mickey Rourke-starring Ice Man: Confessions of a Mafia Contract Killer . An...

Eva Amurri ( Californication ) and David Harbour ( Revolutionary Road ) star; the former plays a medical student who awakens in a hospital isolation room having been exposed to an unknown disease, desperately ill and with no recollection of how she got there. No word yet on distribution, but stay tuned.

Susan Sarandon and Eva Amurri in 198? and in 2010
The picture on the left I just found in a old box from my parent's house. Was it from a Rolling Stone or a Premiere? I do not know. I'm guessing it's from 1988ish... Eva's just a wee toddler. The picture on the right is from the Emmys one week ago. (Eva turned 25 earlier this year). Hug your little loved ones right this instance. Before you know it they'll be taller than you.
I thought Eva was quite good in The Life Before Here Eyes (2007) but I haven't seen much of her work. Did anyone catch her on Californication... verdict? At any rate, she's got plenty of time to make her mark.
Susan had only done 3 films and a few TV roles at Eva's age. Sarandon's mega career was a gradual uphill walk rather than a meteoric rise. The Rocky Horror Picture Show...

Are you ready for a new spin on the "zombie" genre? After 28 Days Later everyone has tried, most have failed, but can the director of "The Shield" and Boogeyman find a way to make it work?
